The 2013 Britannia Gold Bullion coin now contains one troy ounce of 0.9999 fine gold.Issued as UK legal tender, Gold Bullion Britannia coins are struck to The Royal Mint’s exacting standards in 24 carat gold, with a face value of £100 and measuring an impressive 38.61mm in diameter. In keeping with market demands, they also weigh exactly one troy ounce, while the coins are designed to enable transportation and storage without risk of damage.

Coin Specifications

Introduced in 1489 by order of King Henry VII, the Sovereign has long played a key role in national and international financial trading. These first Sovereigns had a value of one pound and were struck to a purity of 23 & 7/8 carat fine. During the sixteenth century a new gold alloy was introduced and this new alloy using 22 carat ‘crown gold’ has become the traditional alloy of the bullion Sovereign.

For a time the Sovereign gave way to other coins. Re-introduced in 1817, so beautiful, prestigious and above all trusted was the revived British Sovereign that it became a recognised currency in more than 20 countries during the nineteenth century and has been described as ‘the chief coin of the world.’

The Sovereign as we know it today is the flagship coin of The Royal Mint and continues to be recognised around the world as a gold coin of unimpeachable accuracy, quality and beauty.

With a specification whose weight is guarded to five decimal places by the Coinage Act of 1971, and a quality assured every year at the annual Trial of the Pyx, the Bullion Sovereign is rightly regarded as one of the world’s greatest coins and a lasting symbol of integrity and reliability.

This legacy continues with the launch of The 2013 UK Gold Bullion Sovereign. Issued as UK legal tender, each coin is meticulously struck by The Royal Mint in 22 carat gold.

When you choose to store your bullion coins in The Royal Mint Vault, your coins will be taken from existing stocks and moved securely to the Vault, an operation that occurs on a single, high security site. Your coins will be 100% owned by you as guaranteed by your Certificate of Allocation.

Absolute securityThe Royal Mint Vault resides behind the gates of our secure facility in South Wales, guarded 24/7, 365 days a year by the Ministry of Defence. Offering you unrivalled security and a service promising absolute confidentiality and discretion, you will be securing best-in-class protection for your bullion coins.

Allocated ownershipGold bullion coins purchased from The Royal Mint and stored in The Royal Mint Vault are done so on a fully ‘allocated’ basis. This means each individual coin is owned entirely by you, offering you the option of removing them from The Royal Mint Vault and taking delivery of your bullion coins at any time.

You will be issued with a Royal Mint Certificate of Allocation guaranteeing you 100% ownership of the coins you have bought to be stored in The Royal Mint Vault.

Segregated storageYour bullion coins are fully segregated, meaning your coins are stored in an individual bullion box, protected with a tamper-evident security seal, inside The Royal Mint Vault. They will not be mixed with coins belonging to anyone else, and they are not a ‘pool’ of coins that you own a share of.

They are your coins, packed in your tamper-evident box, guaranteed by your Certificate of Allocation, stored separately from other coins in the Vault.

Similarly, your LBMA Good Delivery Gold bars will be securely stored in a unique location, ensuring your bars are easily identifiable and retrievable.

Buy-back optionThe Royal Mint offers a buy-back option to all customers who purchase new gold coins from The Royal Mint for storage in The Royal Mint Vault.

At your request, we will confirm a buy-back price; upon your approval, we will fix the buy-back rate and transfer the funds into your account.

Our buy-back option makes buying and storing bullion coins with The Royal Mint one of the most flexible and secure methods of buying gold bullion coins, safe in the knowledge we will liquidate your physical gold at your request, at any time.

How To Order From The Royal Mint

Bullion will be purchased on the am or pm London bullion market fix following confirmation (in writing and by telephone) of your requirements and subsequent acceptance by The Royal Mint. All orders must be sent to both your Account Manager and to bullionsales@royalmint.com. Purchases can be made in US Dollars, Euros or GB Pounds.

For Britannia Silver daily fix purchases must be confirmed in writing and by telephone by 11.30hrs (GMT)

For Britannia Gold and Sovereigns, all am fix purchases must be confirmed in writing and by telephone by 09:00hrs (GMT), all pm fix purchases must be confirmed in writing and by telephone by 14:00hrs (GMT)

How To Buy and Store Gold Bullion Coins from The Royal Mint

Your Account Manager will manage every aspect of your bullion coin and storage purchase. As soon as you have confirmed your requirements over the telephone and in writing, your bullion will be purchased on the am or pm London bullion market fix.

Upon confirmation of your order and receipt of payment, your coins will be allocated and transferred to The Royal Mint Vault. Your Account Manager will then issue you with your Certificate of Allocation, your guarantee of ownership of the coins you have ordered and stored in The Royal Mint Vault.
