THE ROYAL WELSH SHOW 2013

The first Royal Welsh Show was held at Aberystwyth in 1904. After moving to 37 different venues throughout Wales it settled at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, in 1963. This year marks the show's 50th anniversary on the permanent site and it’s development into the biggest Agricultural Show in Europe.

Welsh Pony & Cob enthusiast from around the World gathered to watch the best animals judged in the large main arena. As always SWA members were there competing against the cream of ponies and cobs and professional handlers. Congratulations to you all even if you were not in the top ten, it is an amazing experience just to show in that main arena. Meirion Davies of the Rhoson and Heniarth Studs had some lovely ponies in the Section B classes to judge. Here Sandy Anderson continued his successes from the A’s by winnning the yearling colt class with IMPERIAL JERONIMO and then the yearling filly & gelding class with his homebred THISTLEDOWN ARTIC ROSE. Maggie & John Carter’s homebred MILLCROFT CHIQUITA was sixth in the latter. In the two year old filly and gelding class Eunice Jarvis’ LEMONSHILL LACEWING was sixth. The three year old filly and gelding class was another win for Sandy Anderson with his homebred THISTLEDOWN SEA SHANTY. The barren mare and gelding class was won by Margaret Gethin’s homebred MYNACH ORIANA,

Margaret is in a Scottish Care Home suffering from Alzheimer’s and her ponies are looked after and shown by David Blair and Tom Best of the Waxwing Stud. In the junior brrodmare class Sandy Anderson’s homebred THISTLEDOWN HOLLYHOCK was third and Vicky Stephens fifth with her homebred ANNANDALE EXCLUSIVE. Sandy continues his wins with another in the senior brood mare class with IMPERIAL JESSANDRA. Sandy’s foal out of Thistledown Hollyhock by Paddock Sahara was fifth in the colt foal class and THISTLEDOWN JERICHO out of Imperial Jessandra by Imperial Juene was fifth in the filly foal class. John & Maggie Carter’s homebred MILLCROFT ISKA ROC was third in the stallion class. In the two year old filly and gelding class Ceri fell’s homebred BRYNSEION DELECTABLE was second. Sandy Anderson won the three year old filly and gelding class with the aptly named POPSTERS MEGASTAR. Ceri Fell & Miss L Hadley’s LAURTOM RED HOT was third in the senior brood mare class and Sandy Anderson’s RANGEVIEW RINGLET was fourth. The colt foal class was won by Ceri Fell & Miss L Hadley’s LAUTOM ROSSI who is out Laurtom Red Hot by Parvadean Roberto. Gareth William’s senior broodmare winner Synod Lady Lillian went through the card being not only the Section C Champion, Welsh Champion, the Royal Welsh In

Hand Champion but topped it all by winning the Cuddy Qualifier. This mare was amazing as she kept going all day. The Reserve Section C Champion was Kath Panayiotou’s stallion Parvadean Renegade.

Danaway Noodles

The Section D judge, Wendy Burt of the Rotherdale Stud insisted on judging all those forward and would not send any out. She managed to do this and finish on time, what an achievement with 43 forward in the filly class alone! Maxine and Mark Ingham’s DANAWAY

NOODLES was second in the yearling colt class out of 26 forward, a great achievement. Noodles is by the Royal Welsh 2013 Reserve Section D Sire Points Scheme winner Danaway Tango. John Cuddy & Chris Newman were twelfth in the barren mare class with her home bred KAYDENCE EN-VOGUE shown by Chris herself. The barren mare classes were all big classes and the Ds were no exception with 33 forward out of 59 entered, so well done Chris. The Stallion classes had good entries, the Champion coming from the senior class, with the Attrell’s Trevallion Black Harry who went on to win the Prince of Wales Cup. The reserve Section D Champion was the lovely senior broodmare winner Fronarth Super Model.

The Welsh gelding classes were again well supported; hopefully the Royal Welsh will one day incorporate them into the Section classes in the main ring. Tony McGuire’s 4 year old gelding SARUM PHOENIX was eleventh in the Welsh Mountain Pony & Welsh Ponies 4 four years old & over class out of 21 forward.

The only Welsh Part Bred that I can find in the results is Jane Busch’s lovely colt STANLEY

GRANGE REGAL EMPIRE, beautifully shown by Jamie Frost. They won the two and three year old colt Riding Pony Breeding class and were Reserve Champion. They were also third in the colt filly and gelding two and three old Welsh Part Bred class.

PLAYBOY was tenth. In the Ds gelding class there were 48 forward and after the initial go round only 16 were left in , the rest were sent out. One of the final sixteen was Cathie Pearse’s WISHAW SEALORD although his was not placed it was quite an achievement to be one of the final sixteen! The Welsh Ridden Champion was Ann & Peter Jones’ Menai Martino and Reserve Beth & Margo Simon’s Powysvalley Tobago, both Section D stallions.
