President’s CornerJuly’s beginning, summer’s here, kickoffs for the Rock n Roll Half have started, and the weather’s hot. Our summer series at the gardens will be starting soon after you receive this and if you haven’t before you really should take advantage of these events.

I know that this may be a delicate topic for a number of reasons, but it’s a perfect time to recognize the importance of beer in running.

When the Elizabeth River Run was fi rst discussed with elders from Portsmouth’s children’s museum community we met to cover logistics for the race. The fi rst half hour was taken up over the location and dispersal of the beer after the race. I’m not sure exactly how they took this, but it seemed perfectly logical to me.

Then, with the appointment of the new president’s fi rst supreme court nominee, there arose a story of the fi rst supreme court chief justice. It seems that they had agreed to allow alcohol to be served whenever it was raining during their deliberations. One time it wasn’t raining, but the chief justice remarked that over that vast land it must be raining somewhere, so they should still refresh themselves. In case you missed this, it can be construed as the fi rst time the idea of “it’s fi ve o’clock somewhere” was used.

Finally, we should have plenty of beer for the memorial 5K on July 28 in the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. We’ll also have a ton of free gifts from a variety of venues, restaurants, and shops. We’ll have pizza and the weather will be hot. Please consider coming out to run the race, though, because it’s one of our biggest fundraisers of the year for our scholarship funds. The Striders awarded $11,500. to 7 recent graduates to further their studies in college. This is a tremendously rewarding activity.

See you at the races,Rich Hildreth

Notes from the EditorWow...thanks for all the input this month.

There are many interesting articles in this issue. Before you dig in, this is a good time to reiterate the newsletter policy...”Opinions expressed in the RUNDOWN are not necessarily those of the Editor or the Tidewater Striders Board of Directors.”

It is July in Hampton Roads when sane people would stay inside but runners and triathletes are another breed. Stay hydrated during your training runs and races. If you think you’ve drinking enough, drink some more!!

Check out the race forecasts for some new and interesting events during the summer and fall.

See ya at the races,Ada [email protected]

In 1979, I was the sole sophomore on the sprint relay teams at a pubic high school in Greenville, DE. At that time, a 10K was 10,000 meters and it was something that I could not imagine doing. I was a sprinter. I ran short distances fast. If the coach had asked me to run any distance longer than 400 meters, I would have felt as though I was being punished. Not everyone felt that way about a 10,000 meter run since during that same year, Jerry Bocrie started the fi rst ever Elizabeth River Run. Local runners will recognize his name since he is also the founder of the Shamrock Marathon.

I eventually moved to Hampton Roads and began running long distances as a way to keep fi t. I had heard about the Elizabeth River Run and decided to give it a try. That was in 1986. I will never forget catching a ride on one of the many transit buses that transported participants from downtown Norfolk, VA to the Armed Forces College at the Norfolk Naval Base. I recall wondering to myself what I had gotten myself into. The bus ride took so long that it seemed as though the event could not possibly be only 10,000 meters. The original course for the ERR began outside the gates of the Naval College and ended at Town Point Park in downtown Norfolk. At its peak, the ERR attracted as many as 3500 runners.

I ran this event almost annually and then in 2003, it was canceled because the City of Norfolk would no longer allow the race to fi nish in the down town area. Their claim was that it interfered with the launching of ships at the new cruise line terminal. I, along with quite a few others, was disappointed to hear that one of our favorite races may be gone forever. Our disappointment was replaced with relief in 2004 when Brian Sagedy began negotiations with the City of Portsmouth and the Naval Medical Center of Portsmouth in an effort to bring the Elizabeth River Run to Portsmouth.

According to Mr. Sagedy, the level of cooperation with the City of Portsmouth, VA and the Naval Medical Center has been incredible. The Portsmouth Police Department has offered its support along with the Traffi c Engineering Department in order to set up the course and keep the runners safe during the event.

River Run. Olde Town features monuments and brick buildings that are reminiscent of simpler times. The highlight of the course is Hospital Point located on the grounds of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. This part of the course provides a spectacular view of the Elizabeth River. The security staff at the medical center provide signifi cant support for the race as well. Many of the participants make an effort to thank them as they pass them along the course.

The race ends at Ntelos Pavilion. The pavilion provides a great venue for the pre-race activities as well as the post race party. The race organizers do a great job of providing just about everything that you need before the race begins as well as plenty of refreshments after you’ve completed your run. The pavilion also comes fully equipped with a beer license, so there are adult beverages available for those who are old enough to indulge.

This year marked the 5th anniversary of the Elizabeth River Run in Portsmouth and its 30th year overall. My best assessment of this event is that the change of venue has only enhanced its reputation as one of the signature running events in Hampton Roads. As Mr. Sagedy put it, we have found a home here in Portsmouth. I agree. The community support along the course was incredible. I’ve participated in all fi ve of the Portsmouth events and each year

THANK YOU!Dear Tidewater Striders,I want to thank you again for continuing to support my studies and activities at George Mason University by honoring me with another scholarship. I have been a Strider for many years, and learn new things from the running community each year, whether it is on the volunteer side of things, or preparing for my fi rst half marathon. I think it is awesome what you guys have accomplished for the whole running community, from the New Energy kids to adults. Hopefully, everyone’s experience can be as great as mine has been. Thanks again, and see you out on the courses. Sincerely, Charlie Celesia

To the astonishment of many, a recent fatal accident involving a skilled cyclist legally using a public roadway did not result in any charges against the driver who hit him. According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Virginia Beach there are no laws protecting bicyclists, pedestrians or other non-motorized users of a public road from being struck by a vehicle whose driver plainly “didn’t see” the victim. Unless there is proof of gross negligence or circumstances such as alcohol, drugs, speed or an illegal maneuver on the part of the driver there are simply no provisions in state law to support bringing charges.

For the drivers that are cited, often times it is a mail in fi ne. It seems that killing a cyclist or runner doesn’t even merit a court appearance. Society is in effect saying to the driver “it’s ok that you killed someone, we understand.”

Whether the accident occurred through inattentiveness or incompetency, the driver doesn’t even merit a look by offi cials to see if they should continue to have a license. They are free to go back out and kill or injure someone else. In practice, Virginia law places seemingly little burden on drivers to be alert for and safely maneuver around other roadway users. The balance certainly seems tilted in the drivers favor.

This needs to be changed. Non-motorists using a road or street have every right to expect that drivers will be alert and avoid them. For those drivers who aren’t willing or are unable to comply, there needs to be a provision in state law where their driving skills are called into question and penalties

applied.

One way this could be accomplished is by introducing what is termed a “vulnerable roadway user” into Virginia law. This defi nes a class of roadway users who are vulnerable to being killed or seriously injured by a car or truck. The defi nition can include pedestrians, runners, bicyclists, equestrians, highway workers, and even motorcycles and farm equipment.

In July 2007 Oregon enacted such a law (HB3314; ORS 801.608, ORS 811.135); there is also a similar bill working its way through the Texas legislature (SB488/HB827). Oregon’s provisions include a mandatory court appearance, a one year suspension of driving privileges, and a $12,500 fi ne. It falls short of what many would like to see, but is a start.

Adoption of similar measures by Virginia would provide law enforcement with a useful tool for charging drivers who cause serious injury or death to other users of the public way. “I didn’t see him or her” will no longer be automatically excusable.

An internet search on this topic turns up plenty of background material, some of which I’ve repeated above (Ray Thomas; http://www.stc-law.com/vulnerable.html ). Do the reading, and if you agree and want to help change Virginia, please contact your state and local elected offi cials to seek their support.Bruce DreesAdvocacy Chair, Tidewater Bicycle [email protected]

Where does your race dollar go? It may not be a question the average runner asks, but if someone called you on the phone and asked for a $25 donation, would you question where it was going? And if they replied that ‘a portion of the donation’ goes to XYZ charity, wouldn’t you want to know exactly what portion? And maybe where the rest of the money would go?

Most people run races because they enjoy the competition and the social aspect of the event. Others run particular races because they want to assist the charity that is hosting the event. But very few understand what a huge business recreational races have become.

The Rock and Roll Marathon and Half Marathon Series is a prime example of the modern day, for profi t race. Elite Racing professionally organizes, promotes and presents a series of half and full marathon events all over the country. They are a marketing machine and have been responsible for propelling the sport of recreational running to a new level.

Most national level races charge a fairly hefty fee to register; fees increase on a scale as the race date approaches. They also contract sponsors who pay ten’s of thousands of dollars to have their logo associated with the race. Vendors pay top dollar to secure space at packet pickup expositions. It all adds up to millions of dollars in race income.

As you can guess, there are huge expenses associated with these races; planning, marketing, logos, t-shirts, bibs, medals, food, hydration, traffi c control, police, medical, hundreds of porto-potties just to name a few items. Those expenses certainly cut into the proceeds; or do they?

Some sponsors don’t contribute money – they contribute in-kind items. For instance, cities will provide public works personnel, city engineers, police and paramedics to ensure the race route and the runners are safe. Why? The race brings millions in tourism dollars into the city. Apparel vendors such as Brooks or Sugoi may provide the race shirts. Why? Because they have their name associated with the race and any race apparel produced for the event would have to utilize their products. Local

WHERE DOES YOUR RACE DOLLAR GO By Laura Cvitanovich

media outlets provide free promotional spots. Sports drinks vie to have their product passed out at water stops. Sponsorship-in-kind can defray a huge portion of the race expense.

But the charity gets the proceeds, right? Well, yes and no. Most large races do benefi t various charities, but not through race proceeds. They reserve several thousand race slots, at a reduced rate, for charities like Team in Training, who then sell them to runners who must meet a certain pledge levels to participate. If the charities cannot fi ll the slots, they are handed back to race management, who then sells them to the public. Usually at this point, the race has been sold out, so newly opened slots are sold at a premium price.

As a runner, you pay your fees, which can top $100, pick up your packet at an expo where you can see the latest in running technology, participate in a top-notch running event, collect a medal, t-shirt, a cup of beer and some goodies. You purchase the opportunity to participate in the event. In turn, the promoter provides you with a highly memorable running experience and some bragging rights. But, at no time did you, or the promoter, contribute to a charity.

Local area races are organized on the same concepts. Runner’s pay race entry fees, sponsors pay to place their logos thereby offsetting race expenses, vendors sometimes help out with sponsorship-in-kind such as food, publicity, and printing. In most cases, a charity is involved as the organizing entity and that charity benefi ts directly from the race proceeds.

So where does your local race dollar go? From a $20 entry fee, $6 goes to a t-shirt, and another $5 - $7 goes towards other expenses such as scoring, printing, refreshments, bibs, sound systems, porto-potties, venue rental, permits, etc. It can cost upwards of $12 a runner to host a race. A knowledgeable race director may be able to bring those costs down somewhat.

Ideally, sponsorship should offset the race expenses; ten sponsors at $250 each provide an additional $2500. Sponsorship in kind might defray another $500 in costs.

Let’s look at the numbers. Race income would include:

Entry Fees 250 X $20 $5000.

Sponsorship 10 X $250 $2500.

Total Income $7500.

Race expense would include:

$12 /runner X 250 $3000.

Less Sponsors-in-kind $ 500.

Total Expenses $2500.

The net proceeds from this race equal $5000. Looking at these fi gures, the race director was able to offset the expenses with sponsorship. That is a great goal for any race.

On a local level, most runners assume that their race fees benefi t a charity. Here we come, full circle, back to the phone solicitor for XYZ charity. Always check, always ask. Is the charity named in the title of the race? Does the registration fl yer state that proceeds benefi t the charity?

Some races are not associated with any charity; they use statements like ‘a portion of the proceeds, ‘running for,’ or ‘raising awareness for’ a charity. One recent race touted a connection to a vague national charitable campaign. When questioned via email, the race director was kind enough to provide a link to the charity’s website, but no answers as to the percentage of proceeds. Closer inspection of the race, the charity and associated websites revealed that only the proceeds from a post-race raffl e were being donated.

Races are fun, they promote active lifestyles, and they are great way to spend a morning. If you purchase a race entry solely for the fun of it, there is no need to look any further than when and where the next event is happening. For profi t races can provide a great running experience. But, if you like to know where your race dollar is going, read the fi ne print and ask the right questions. Don’t assume. Make sure that your dollar really ends up at your favorite charity and not in someone’s pocket. Laura Cvitanovich is owner of Happy Pace Races, LLC. In 2008, Happy Pace Races secured more than $14,000 in proceeds for the local Toys for Tots Campaign through the promotion of their Thanksgiving Day Race.

Now, that summer is here, quick, easy meals are in demand so you can spend some time outdoors. If you have also planted a garden hopefully you have included some herbs.

Herbs are easier to grow than vegetables and can also be grown in your kitchen if you have a place near a window to put them. Recent studies suggest that spices and herbs may

play a protective role in food safety by reducing the growth of dangerous bacteria. For example, cloves, cinnamon, thyme, oregano and rosemary function as antibacterial agents when added to foods. When used in a marinade, spices and herbs can also reduce the effect of carcinogens that form when meat is grilled. Some ideas: chicken with rosemary, beef with thyme or marjoram, green beans with dill, oregano, tarragon or thyme, sweet potatoes with cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon or ginger. Try some thyme, tarragon, parsley, or chives in your next omelet. Fresh herbs can be added to poaching liquid when making chicken salad and shrimp. Here is a recipe I have made for many years, and just recently tried it with some fresh rosemary. It was very good but be careful how much you add due to rosemary’s strong fl avor.

Un-Fried Chicken with Rosemary Serves 8Ingredients6 carrots8 fl oz Kellogg’s Special K20 Protein Water Strawberry Kiwi½ cup Strawberries fresh or frozen1 scoop 100% Whey Protein Powder1 Cup Orange Scream Kroger Ice Cream

InstructionsRemove skin from chicken and marinate overnight in Ital-ian dressing. Pour Kellogg Corn Flake Crumbs in a small bag with the rosemary. Add chicken pieces one at a time to coat. Place on baking sheet lined with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Looking for Another Reason to be a Racewalker?By Steve DurrantWe all know that runners and walkers cover the same distance using their feet to propel their bodies forward. Runners (and joggers) basically leap from foot to foot as they propel themselves forward causing a loss of contact with the ground (a “fl ight phase”) between foot strikes. Walkers maintain constant contact with the ground by keeping one foot in contact with the ground at all times. Racewalkers also maintain one foot in contact with the ground, but they differ signifi cantly from walkers. The advancing leg of a racewalker must be straightened on contact with the ground (no bent knee as runners – and walkers - do) and remain straightened until passed over by the body’s torso in the vertical position. Racewalkers also keep their arms bent 90 degrees at the elbow to maintain a short and rapid arm swing.

Many Strider walkers and racewalkers are former runners who were “forced” into walking and racewalking because of injuries caused or aggravated by running. “Forced” because walking was the only option they could fi nd that would allow them to continue racing and to maintain

their desired level of physical (and mental) activity and fi tness. Dave McGovern, a past national racewalking team member and coach, has told those of us who attend his racewalking clinics, that racewalking burns more calories than running.

A recent article in the June 9, 2009, Connecticut Sports Performance Examiner, led off with “Walk, don’t run: racewalking burns more calories than jogging”. In the article James Rippe, MD, of the University of Massachusetts stated, “racewalking burns 120 to 130 calories per mile – that’s more than running (which burns between 100 and 110) and certainly more than freestyle walking.” One important reason for this is the upper body is employed in racewalking, as well as the lower body. Arms pump vigorously to propel the body forward: arm, neck and chest muscles are worked.

Another major item, not mentioned in the article, is the racewalker’s advancing foot strikes with much less force than the runner’s foot since the racewalker is not airborne between foot strikes. This results in less impact and trauma to the foot, ankle,

knees, hips, and back of the racewalker – and fewer injuries.

Those of us who racewalk know our legs will only move as fast as our arms can swing. Yes, racewalkers look very different (some say “weird” or “strange”) from runners and walkers. Once you get over that - you’re ready to start burning more calories. That’s another good reason to be a racewalker.

Pamela Edwards (1981-2005) was a Virginia Beach native and an avid runner for the Tidewater Striders during her regrettably shortened life. She joined the club’s New Energy youth team when she was seven and came to dominate youth running in the area for the next decade. She was a Junior Olympic All-American in Cross Country and went on to become an All-State Cross Country runner and State Champion in Track in high school. As a scholarship runner at Wake Forest Pamela went on to complete a double major in 3 ½ years and was in her third year of a PhD program at the University of Pennsylvania when her life tragically ended in September 2005.

The Pamela Edwards Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to support an endowed scholarship in her memory. The Fund will provide an annual award of $2,000 or more to a college or university athlete based on academic and athletic achievement, community service and club involvement. The 2009 Tidewater Striders Memorial Scholarship 5K race is dedicated to help fund the Pamela Edwards Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Numerous raffl e prizes have been donated to help raise funds for the scholarship. A $10 contribution to the Scholarship Fund provides your race entry and one (1) ticket for great raffl e prizes. Contribution of $20, $25, or $50 gets you three, fi ve or twelve raffl e tickets, respectively. Additional raffl e tickets will be available on the same schedule: 1 for $10, 3 for $20, 5 for $25, and 12 for $50. Time and again, runners repeatedly ask questions about sugar, protein, supplements, caffeine, carbs, recovery, and body fat. To address these issues, an international group of sports nutritionists (Professionals in Nutrition & Exercise Science (PINES); www.sportsoracle.com) gathered in Seattle in May. Experts in their fi elds discussed the latest research and answered commonly asked questions. Perhaps the answers will help you resolve confusing nutrition issues.

Q. Is pre-exercise sugar harmful to performance?A. More than 100 studies indicate consuming sugar within the hour pre-exercise does not hurt performance. The vast majority of runners can enjoy pre-exercise sweets for a quick fi x. But some runners are, indeed, “sugar sensitive” and experience rebound hypoglycemia. They quickly learn—

1) to avoid sugar 15 to 45 minutes pre-exercise and instead consume it right before they exercise (the body will not have time to release the insulin that contributes to the “crash”) or

2) choose pre-run foods that do not produce a “sugar high” such as oatmeal or whole grain toast with a little peanut butter.

Q. How can I gain muscle and lose fat?A. The body has diffi culty building muscle and losing fat at the same time. Building muscle requires calories. If you are restricting calories to lose undesired body fat, your body does not have the fuel it needs to create new muscle tissue. Instead, the body breaks down muscle to use for fuel.

A dieting runner can minimize muscle loss with— 1) a small calorie defi cit that contributes to slow fat loss. 2) an adequate protein intake (i.e., some protein at each meal).3) frequently eaten meals that offer a constant supply of protein and fuel.4) strength training to help protect against muscle loss. Q. What should I eat to recover after a run?A. After a moderate workout, you need not worry about rapidly refueling because your muscles are not depleted. But if you have done an exhaustive track workout or long run, you should plan to replace carbs, water and sodium as soon as tolerable—

The Athlete’s Kitchen - Frequently Asked Sports Nutrition QuestionsCopyright: Nancy Clark MS, RD CSSD, June 2009

particularly if you will be training or competing again within 6 hours. Adding a little protein to the recovery meal or snack helps repair damaged muscle, reduce soreness, and also enhance glycogen replacement in runners who neglect to eat enough carbs:

• For a 150-pound runner, the recommended carb dose for rapid recovery is ~300-calories every 2 hours for 4-6 hours.

• A wise protein target is about 15 to 30 grams protein for a 150-lb runner, taken right after (and/or during) exercise.

(More precisely: 0.5 g carb/lb and 0.1-0.2 g protein/lb)

Simple suggestions include 16-ounces of chocolate milk; a handful of pretzels and a yogurt; a meal such as cereal with milk, Carnation Instant Breakfast, or a shake made with milk, powdered milk and a big banana or other fruit.

Timing may be more important than the actual amount of food consumed. Your best bet is to time your meals to your training, so you eat a meal after a hard workout.

Q. What’s best to drink during and after exercise? How much?A. Beverages that include a little sodium (i.e., sports drinks) enhance fl uid retention. Alternatively, pre-run, you can consume sodium-containing foods (salted oatmeal, pretzels, broth). How much you need to drink depends on how much sweat you lose. Weigh yourself pre- and post-run; dropping one pound equates to losing 16 ounces of sweat that needs to be replaced. More simply, you can monitor your urine and drink enough to urinate a pale-colored urine frequently throughout the day. Not urinating for several hours after exercise is bad: dehydration!

Q. What should I take to boost my immune system?A. Moderate running actually boosts your immune system; moderate exercisers have no need to take immune-boosting supplements. Hard, exhaustive running, in comparison, contributes to infl ammation, oxidative stress, and immune dysfunction. But if you are healthy, well fed, and well rested, your immune system can handle the stress. Supplements will not boost your immune function above normal levels.

If you undereat and fail to consume adequate protein or carbs after a hard run (as happens with dieters or runners who are “too busy” to eat), immune response drops. The best supplement to take to counter this response is adequate food—carb-protein combinations, like chocolate milk or a meal.

Quercetin (a bioactive compound found in red apples) is touted to boost the immune system. However, research suggests quercetin works best in “cocktails,” the way it naturally come in foods. That is, a quercetin supplement, by itself, is less effective than when quercetin is combined with other bioactive compounds, such as fi sh oil and green tea extract.

Q. Should I train on a high fat diet to enhance fat-burning?A. By burning more fat, runners are able to burn fewer carbs and thereby spare their limited glycogen stores. Supposedly, this should enhance endurance, given that glycogen depletion is associated with fatigue. Yet, the practice has yet to translate into improved performance. The best way to enhance endurance is to consume carbs during extended exercise.

Q. Should I train with low glycogen stores, and then compete when carbo-loaded?A. While the “train low, compete high” method is an interesting concept, research has yet to prove it will enhance performance. Theoretically, training “low” stimulates physiological adaptations that spare muscle glycogen and allow greater endurance. The problems are—

1) runners are unable to train at a high intensity when their muscles are glycogen depleted and

2) training with glycogen-depleted muscles increases the risk of injury.

Bottom line: Eat carbs daily for well-fueled muscles that allow you to train hard!

Q. What dose of caffeine is best to enhance performance?A. Although responses to caffeine vary greatly from person to person, a suggested dose equates to a 12-oz. mug of coffee one hour pre-exercise. (More precisely, consume 1.5 mg caffeine per pound of body weight (3 mg/kg)—or about 225 mg for a 150-lb athlete. Higher doses of caffeine

Although the knee is much less complex than the foot, it can certainly cause a signifi cant amount of discomfort and challenges while running. The knee joint consists of 3 bones, the femur, the tibia and the fi bula. There are a number of ligaments lining the sides, front and back, and the inside of the joint capsule holding the knee together. Small discs of soft tissue sit inside the knee to support weight distribution. The muscles surrounding the knee also have a signifi cant impact on the functioning of the joint. This article will focus on such muscles and their impact on the knee.

A particular muscle group helps control the gliding of the knee cap (patella) as the knee is fl exed or extended. The quadriceps muscle group (vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, rectis femoris and vastus medialis) come together to form a common tendon known as the patellar tendon. The patellar tendon then houses the knee cap and attaches below the knee joint. The common attachment of the muscles provide signifi cant strength as the muscles work together to extend the knee. However, it is vital that the muscles are equal in strength so one side does not overpower the other side. If imbalance occurs, the knee cap does not track properly over the knee causing pain and infl ammation to develop.

Most often an imbalance results when the muscle that sits more on the outside of the thigh (vastus lateralis) is stronger than the one sitting on the inside (vastus medialis). Size matters in this case. The vastus lateralis is larger in size and is used most often in the beginning stages of knee extension, whereas the vastus medialis is smaller and

used more at the end of knee extension. If both muscles are not trained properly, the vastus lateralis can easily overcome and cause the knee cap to shift toward the outside, also known as “lateral tracking.” Other mechanisms that are related with lateral tracking include excessive food pronation and ilitotibial band tightness.

Signs and symptoms of lateral tracking include increased generalized knee pain, pain while walking up and down stairs, pain and stiffness after sitting for long periods of time, swelling and irritation and pain while running.

Luckily, lateral tracking problems can be treated with simple strengthening techniques and soft tissue techniques. The vastus medialis is the muscle primarily strengthened to help pull the knee-cap back to midline and glide over the knee properly. “Terminal knee extensions” are simple exercises you can do at home to strengthen the end of knee extension. Soft tissue techniques can focus on stretching the vastus lateralis so it does not tighten and pull the knee cap toward the outside. Soft tissue work can also remove any trigger points that may be in vastus medialis so it can strengthen and function properly. Lastly, chiropractic manipulative therapy can adjust the knee, as well as the ankles and low back to promote proper movement patterns within the leg.Dr. Amanda J. Meyers is a chiropractor in the Red Mill area of Virginia Beach. offer no performance advantages and can create the disadvantage of sleep problems that end up hurting performance. Enough is enough; more caffeine is not better!

Q. Do I need to worry about contamination in commercial sports supplements like protein powders?A. Yes! A survey of 634 nutrition supplements indicates about 15% included a banned substance, even though the supplement came from a factory that did not even manufacture that substance (i.e., steroids, ephedrine). The contaminants make the products “work” (read that, “sell better”). The products most likely to be contaminated with illegal compounds include bodybuilding supplements and weight loss products. Buyer beware!

Q. Where can I fi nd a sports dietitian to help me eat to win?A. For a board certifi ed specialist in sports dietetics (CSSD) , use the referral network at www.SCANdpg.org. With a personalized eating program that optimizes your fueling practices, you’ll gain a winning edge!

New in 2009, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon will debut a two-person relay option. The fi rst relay member will run the ~6.55 mile leg with the custom Rock ‘n’ Roll Relay drumstick in hand. The exchange will take place on Birdneck Road before the Camp Pendleton entrance. From there, the second relay member will run the drumstick through the historic military base all the way to the beautiful boardwalk fi nish.

The relay fi eld will be limited to six-hundred teams of two. The relay participants will be treated to all of the half marathon perks including: Commemorative fi nisher’s medal Entry into the 3-day Verizon Wireless American Music Festival, featuring the Black Crowes Sugoi technical participant tee Free MGD 64 beer

“We listened to participant feedback throughout the year and are excited to provide a fun alternative to those who want to participate in the Rock ‘n’ Roll event, but prefer a shorter race distance,” said Event Manager, Megan Bitsoff

Relay teams are fi lling up fast! To register for the relay, please visit www.rnrvb.com.

Weight Watchers and the Tidewater StridersOn Sunday, June 14th, the WeightWatchers at Princess Anne Commons held a mini fi tness expo. They invited representatives from Running, Etc., the YMCA and the Tidewater Striders to help their members understand the importance of being physical active. Although WeightWatchers can take care of the food aspect of a healthy lifestyle, they wanted a little help with the fi tness portion. Three Strider Walkers, Lori Sherwood, Paula Graham and Cindy Williams where invited to represent the Tidewater Striders discussing ways to become more active. Not only did they talk about the benefi ts of walking and racewalking, but also talked about the camaraderie that can be found at the races. They then invited everyone to participate in the Summer Series and the Memorial 5K. A lot of good information was exchanged and as WeightWatchers’ Leader Susan Snead said “I know this is the beginning of a great relationship between WeightWatchers and the Tidewater Striders.” WeightWatchers looks forward to holding another mini expo in the fall and hopefully the Tidewater Striders will be there again.

In 1999, this race was held for the first time, and was called the “Brave Heart Run-Swim-Run.” Allen Stone – a local Navy SEAL and friend of the organizers – competed and won the 20-29 male age group. Tragically, this was Allen’s last race.

Shortly after, he died in a SEAL training accident. Accordingly, the race committee decided to rename the race to honor our fallen friend and local hero. We hope you’ll participate! With Allen’s enthusiastic zeal for life and outgoing personality, we

know he would have welcomed you!
