PRESIDENTS MESSAGE – Flying Low with Gene
It seems like just yesterday, we were all enjoying the Festivus at Rich and Marianne’s house and yet, it’s less than 299 days till the Holiday Season starts all over again. I say that only because, as I look ahead, this first week in March will be a very busy week indeed. On March 5th we have our monthly Birds by the Bay organization meeting, followed closely on March 6th by the SCVT Board meeting at Omega’s, then just 2 days later on March 8th we have our monthly SCVT meeting at West Valley College.
Our March Board meeting will be the first of two this year. The plan is to have both a pre and post Convention Board meeting, both of which I’m sure will be focused primarily on the SCVT Budget for this and upcoming years. If our budget is correct we should have even more money in the coffers when the Convention is over. Then our newly formed budget committee can have some fun deciding what new benefits SCVT can offer to our members. Something that I didn’t realize before becoming President is that our largest expenditures during the year is the Participation awards and banquet. Our Parades, Homecomings and Displays have always provided us a good income to support the nice gifts we’ve given out over the years. But we’ve lost a few Homecomings and the Flea Market display so overall income will be down substantially unless we make or exceed the profit shown in our convention budget.
Birds by the Bay is off to a very good start. As of March 1, we already have 29 families registered for the Convention. Our hotel, the San Jose Airport Garden Hotel, has 60 room reservations for Wednesday night and more than 80 for Thursday through Saturday. With still more than 5 months to “BBTB”, we’ve already filled more than 80% of our guaranteed rooms. I’ve been told that one of the problems with our 1997 convention was the lack of hotel reservations until just before the show. The good news is it doesn’t appear that we have that problem this time around. Those of us who were at the hotel last month for the convention meeting were pleasantly surprised. Yes, it is an older hotel, but the rooms are nice and clean with the rooms closer to the Convention Center facility being a little larger. The Garden area where we’ll be having both the Welcome Party and the Friday Night Luau is a wonderful setting for the outdoor barbecues we have planned. And, to top it off, we have the entire Mediterranean Center (approximately 20,000 sq. ft.) to ourselves throughout the convention.
In contrast to the convention it looks like our driving and car show season is getting off to a slower start than usual. First we have Bill Croxton’s Coastal Drive on March 23rd. In April we have an overnighter hosted by the Monroe’s and Bev and Marty, where we’ll be heading to Sonora to see a play based on the Buddy Holly Story. It looks like we should change our meeting date in May because so many folks will be at the Gold Rush Car Show in Oroville that Doc introduced us to a couple of years ago. For the retired folks, the Dye’s have planned the River Point Art and Wine Display on the first Thursday and Friday of June. And of course in July and August will be busy with our convention, Hot August Nights and Thunder in the Heartland, the Des Moines, Iowa Regional.
If you have an idea for an outing or overnighter you think the club would enjoy, contact Doc. If you’re nervous about planning your first event alone, I’m sure Doc can help you find a mentor to make it a little less stressful.
That’s all I have for now so until our next meeting, keep the dirty side down and drive safe. Gene

Yes, the date is correct…June 6th is a Thursday (Thursday is an unhurried day for Napa vintners). For the past 6 years, RiverPointe Napa Valley Resort has hosted an art and wine event especially for RiverPointe guests at no charge. Local artists show their work while small wineries of Napa Valley pour wine at the resort. And this year, Marilynn, the head concierge, has asked SCVT to display our vintage vehicles (any vintage car) at the event. How cool is that?
THE SCVT EARLY BIRD FAN
8
For some of you…RiverPointe is the resort with the colorful tree‐lined cottages that accommodated us while we attended the Napa Valley car show in August for the past two years. Since SCVT was looking for an event in June, it sounded like a fun thing to participate in to kick off the summer. We would be strolling along looking at artwork, sipping wine, and looking at vintage cars...ours. The event is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will also be food available for purchase from local Napa restaurants. Last year, 17 small wineries participated in this event. And the best part is…you can walk back to your cottage after sipping wine for 3 hours. Editor’s note: Or crawl back! Care to join us? Accommodations are $125 ($142.50 w/ tax). Call Elaine or Geoff at 1.408.262.1078 or email us at [email protected]. We can then assign you a reservation number and provide further details.
CTCI Region 2 Convention, West Des Moines, IA Aug 21‐25, 2013 Doc Dockter The Hawkeye Classic Thunderbird Club is hosting the Region 2 Convention on August 21‐25, 2013. Calling All Members! The Promotions and Ad Committees really need your help in getting donations and ads for “Birds by the Bay”. To help you do that, we have put together a set of documents and instructions that can help you. Go to our web page, www.santaclaravalleytbirds.com, and then click on the “Members Only” tab. Call if you need the password. Go to, “Convention Donation Documents.” Below that are a number of documents that you can use to contact a potential donor. There are samples of donation request letters, ad prices and example, a copy of the brochure, etc. There is also the spreadsheet that shows a list of potential donors. If there is no contact name next to that company, you can select name. It would be great if you had a potential donor that you want to contact that is not on the list. If you have a new potential donor, please send the information to Joe Ryan so he can add it to the list so no one else contacts that person. If you need any help at all, anyone on the committee can give you hand. Thank you! Bev Handelman, jill Schwab, Joe Ryan, Carl Epolite, Cliff Monroe

Sequoia Classic T’Bird Club #109 If your Bird cranks and starts, but immediately shuts off after releasing the key, the ignition voltage dropping resistor is failing. The resistor is not in the cranking circuit. Once the engine is started, and the key is released, the resistor is in the circuit. If it is burned out, voltage to the distributor will be discontinued.
