Conductor’s NotesConductor’s NotesConductor’s NotesConductor’s Notes Here’s what we’ll be playing with Greta!

Pairing contemporaries for this chapter meeting, we’ll start with a lovely internet find by Thomas Crequillon filled with word painting. Some feel this device was a mere contrivance and perhaps too obvious a way to construct a motet, but this one is very effective – and even fun. The text is about Jacob’s vision of a lad-der reaching into heaven and on it, angels were descending and ascending

Da Rore’s Da Pacem Domine be-gins quite simply and develops some lovely polyphony. We have several op-tions for the parts: the 1st voice can be played on either Alto “up” or Soprano, the 2nd on either Alto or Tenor, the 4th on ei-ther Tenor or Bass (reading like an Alto up), and the 5th voice works on either Bass or Great Bass. The tricky thing about this edition is that it’s written with sug-gested bar lines, but all note values are whole. This means some long notes carry over into the next “bar” so careful count-ing is required. After the break we’ll play two pieces composed in the same year (2009) by different composers. The first by our “own” James Kopf: a movement from a suite he was inspired to composed for re-corders when observing his Wonder Cat, Rupert. James produced a lot of really fun music for recorders when around this time he and Cameron were tangentially con-nected with AROW. They both composed a couple of remarkable medleys for AROW’s Viva Italia! program. We’ll conclude with some theme music from a very popular Japanese TV series called “Jin”, which started as a se-ries of Manga books, but then was devel-oped into a live-action TV show about a surgeon who gets transported back in time to the Edo period. The melody is quite romantic and you may even find it haunt-ing. There are guitar chords in the score

and also on the Soprano part, should anyone wish to play (David?). Here’s the list of pieces for our October 3 meet-ing:

• Thomas Crequillon (1520-1557) -Vidit Jacob Scalam S/A8TTBB (2-page parts)

• Cipriano de Rore (1515-1565) – Da Pacem Domine à 5: A8, A/T, T, T/B8, B/GrB (2-pg partial score labeled AA; 3-pg partial score labeled TTB)

• James Kopf – Roo’s Lament (2009) SATBGrBCtB (2-page parts)

• Yu Takami – Jin (2009) SATB (3-page score or 1-page parts).

Greta is a frequent conductor at ARS chapter meetings around the greater Bay Area, co-directs the Barbary Coast Recorder Orchestra, and is assistant di-rector with the Mid-Peninsula Recorder Orchestra. A San Francisco native with musical roots in the Bay Area Classical and Early Music scene that span three generations, she is delighted to have such an active part in our recorder com-munity. Her grandfather and father were professional symphony orchestra musi-cians who often hosted small ensemble chamber music rehearsals at home, cre-ating a lasting and happy association with music and friends for Greta from a very early age. In 2004, she founded the recorder quartet SDQ, carrying that tra-dition forward. Greta also teaches pri-vate recorder lessons to students of all ages and presently serves on the Board of the American Recorder Society.

Here are three interesting playing opportu-nities:

SRS member Alex Ives coordinates music for the Crocker Holiday Craft Faire which takes place over Thanksgiving weekend. This is a pleasant, low-stress chance to play a variety of music for Faire-goers as they wander by. Contact Alex if you are interested: [email protected]

Lee Lovallo leads a group of singers that specialize in early music. He’s looking for recorder players to join his group in a cou-ple Christmas performances on Dec. 19 (Sacramento) and Dec. 21 (Stockton). You can contact him at [email protected]

Save the dates! The Nevada City Recorder Society will play at Victorian Christmas again this year, and we invite all SRS members to come up on any day to enjoy the festivities. Dates are Sundays Dec. 3, 10, and 17 from 1:30-2:30 p.m., and Wednesdays Dec. 13 and 20, 5-6 pm. We meet at the corner of Commercial and Pine in downtown Nevada City. About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder About the Sacramento Recorder SocietySocietySocietySociety

The Sacramento Recorder Society, founded in 1982, is a non-profit, tax-

exempt organization. It is a chapter of the American Recorder Society and an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society. We welcome recorder players of all ages and abilities as well as players of other ear-ly music instruments such as lutes, viols, sackbuts, shawms, curtals, krummhorns, and percussion. Beginners are urged to study privately and learn fingerings and be-come comfortable reading music before joining the recorder orchestra. We meet monthly from September through June, from 6:45pm to 9:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month, at the Friends Meeting House, 890 57th Street, between J St. and H St. Most of our meet-ings are conducted by a professional early music specialist who teaches recorder tech-nique and relevant music history and theory while exploring music of many eras. Many of our members also play in smaller groups in members’ homes during the rest of the month.
