He also moderates the Environmental Club, which oversees an aggressive recycling campaign, as well as an organic garden for the Covington Food Bank. In addition, he moderates the Wolves on Wheels car building club which designs and builds fuel efficient cars for competition in the Shell-Eco Marathon.

Robert Simpson ’88 – Robert earned a Bachelor of Arts from Southeastern Louisiana University and Religious Education certification from the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He has been teaching for a total of 15 years concentrating on Religion II for sophomores and Religion IV for seniors. Robert stays involved by moderating the S.A.D.D. group which stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions. Robert is quite the historian, and we hope to share some of his knowledge about Saint Paul’s campus facilities and monuments in future Wolftracks.

Lee Pierre – Lee earned a Bachelor of Science from Loyola University New Orleans and has a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from St. Mary’s of Kansas. He is in his 14th year at Saint Paul’s and is currently the Science Department Chair teaching Chemistry, Biology II and Physical Science. Saint Paul’s AFJROTC

Dear Alumni, Parents, Students, and Faculty, My name is Paul Hood; I’m a senior at Saint Paul’s, as well as the Cadet Corps Commander for the Louisiana 41st. Our AFJROTC unit was established in 1969 and is the second oldest in the state. We are currently on probation by the Air Force, and we are fighting hard to stay at Saint Paul’s. The rule is that we need seventy-five cadets (currently we have 49) by registration in February to stay open, and every day we are working toward that goal. We hold tailgates before every home game, recruit at any opportunity, and fundraise for our corps trip at the end of the year. I am here to tell you; about what the AFJROTC Program has done much for me, and why it must stay open at all costs. The ROTC program is heavily based on cadet ownership. The upperclassmen staff makes all of the decisions, while being supervised by our instructors. The program lifts leadership to another level, and really helps cadets learn to work with people in a disciplined environment. The program also makes service a priority. We participate in countless service opportunities, as well as hold service projects on our own. It is a great program which teaches leadership and enhances the service experience that Saint Paul’s loves so deeply. Next, the AFJROTC program curriculum is extremely beneficial. It is mental and physical -- aerospace history, space exploration, cultural and geographical studies and leadership skills training including public speaking. Twenty percent of the class time is outdoor activity. During the outdoor training, we either practice drill or enhance the camaraderie of our cadets by playing sports such as soccer, and football. The SPS cadets share a special bond. Each cadet has the courage to try something new. Personally, many of my best friends come from the unit because we know we are all together as a corps. There are plenty of extracurricular activities that keep cadets involved: such as color guard, flag detail, and our newly founded academic bowl. The program strongly encourages us to join an activity because it enhances our school experience. In short, the AFJROTC program has a rich curriculum, and great camaraderie among students. Thirdly, I want to talk about the uniform. As an AFJROTC member, we are required by our headquarters to wear the Air Force service uniform once a week. It is an honor to wear the uniform representing the people who serve our nation. Now, let me make this clear, we are NOT a military recruiting tool. We are a program with a military base whose mission is to elevate our cadets to a higher standard. Most cadets have an issue with the uniform, but they often learn to love it. It is only once a week and it’s an easy grade. The ROTC grade counts for physical education credits. In conclusion, the SPS AFJROTC program is a fantastic program. I truly owe a lot to the unit. It made me who I am today. As the corps commander, and as a four year cadet, I have truly witnessed the transformation of students from boys to men in the program. It teaches leadership, discipline, and respect of all others. I strongly encourage your sons, grandsons, and all the students to think seriously about the program. Please talk to them about it, or just mention it to them, it truly makes a difference. The ROTC room in LaSalle hall is always open, and I am always available for questions, or just to talk to anyone interested. We have a lot of fun events coming up in the next few months. For example, we have a big tailgate party for the Homecoming game on October 12th with food, music, and a rockwall. We encourage all cadet alumni, and any present or former military alumni to come out and join us for that spectacular event. So, please join us, ask questions, and think seriously about this fantastic program. It would be a shame for the JROTC program to not continue. Thank you for taking your time to read this letter, and God Bless.

Happy Birthday Saint Paul’s September 14th

Saint John Baptist de La Salle …Pray For Us

On Friday, September 14, Saint Paul’s celebrated its 101st birthday: a day of remembrance for the dedication and faithfulness of the Benedictine fathers who constructed Saint Paul’s into a great place to learn, pray, and grow. On that very day 101 years ago, four teachers along with five priests taught forty-eight students. Today, with over 875 men of God, Saint Paul’s strives to be the number one choice for parents on the Northshore. View this website for a brief pictorial of the past 100 years.

As the sun set on Monday, September 10, the Student Hosts, moderated by Public Relations Director Karen Hebert, distributed schedules, led parents to correct classrooms, and served as ambassadors to Saint Paul’s. Similar to a normal school day, parents spent ten to fifteen minutes in each of the seven periods listening to a brief overview of the class. Hopefully those two hours made parents remember how arduous their high schools were so they can go easy on their hard working sons. by Michael Burke

On Wednesday, September 5, our Mission Collection for Saint Paul’s School in Marsabit, Kenya, our Lasallian Twin School, began for the first time this school year. Every Wednesday, students offer what money they have to help our fellow Kenyan Lasallians some 9000 miles away. Located in the middle of a desert, Saint Paul’s in Kenya performs as one of the top schools in the country despite the school’s lack of electricity, water, food, and transportation for students. Without the support of the Saint Paul’s community, our fellow school would not last long on its own. by Michael Burke

While the rest of St. Tammany recovered from Hurricane Isaac, our forty acre campus needed some landscaping work. Through the intercessions of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, the storm spared school buildings of damage but littered the grounds with two trees and many branches. From eight to noon, Vice President Trevor Watkins, with the help of one hundred students, swept sidewalks, collected sticks, and raked leaves. Senior and Student Body Executive Board member Thomas Duet said, “It was an incredible thing to see so many of my brothers show up to help. It says a lot about this place, and the brotherhood and camaraderie that have come to define St. Paul's. When you call upon your brothers, they turn out in droves.“ Click on link to view entire list of students who participated. by Michael Burke

Biomedical Sciences

Saint Paul's Touro Infirmary Biomedical Sciences Program introductory course, Principles of Biomedical Sciences, started the 2012-13 school year with the examination of a "death scene”. Instructor Tony Taffaro staged the area with a mannequin and props for the students to view and then make scientific observations about the cause of death for "Anna Garcia." The rest of the curriculum will center on the study of the human body and how is works. Pictured observing the scene are: Jeffrey Bodin, Nick Oubre, Chase Cochran, Hunter Bourgeouis, Luke Avenel, Landon Waite, Will Healy, and Andrew Brouillette.

Quality Education

Every other Tuesday morning, all students assemble in their “Pack Time” classrooms for a short period of bonding with their fellow students of all class grades. On Tuesday, September 11th, Pack Time was used to solemnly remember the events of 9-11 and the loss of so many innocent lives. They were mindful that our 8th graders were only two or three years old when the events of this day occurred and they may or may not know or remember our nation’s tragic attack on September 11, 2001. At the beginning, the class recalls the presence of God. This recalling God’s presence is very indicative of the kind of activity that our own Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, would have done had he had the kind of information that we have. The recalling of God’s presence before something like this helps us to remember that we are all part of one country and when one of us is hurt all of us feel it… Two moving videos were viewed and a moment of silence was held for those whose lives were lost eleven years ago. Students were then asked for prayer requests. Finally, the students were asked to listen while the teacher read the following prayer that was specially written for this day. View short 9-11 memorial video Pack Time Moderators Gina Hall and Kevin Moore

The White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance Compiled by a Navy Chaplain

Almighty God, the past year will be indelibly inscribed in our memories. We looked with horror on the terrorist attacks of last September 11th.

But we looked with honor on acts of courage by ordinary people who sacrificed themselves to prevent further death and destruction.

We shed our tears in a common bond of grief for those we loved and lost. We journeyed through a dark valley, but your light has led us to a place of hope.

You have turned our grief into determination. We are resolved to do what is good, and right, and just. Help us to remember what it means to be Americans—

a people endowed with abundant blessings. Help us to cherish the freedoms we enjoy and inspire us to stand with courage, united as one Nation in the midst of any adversity.

Lord, hear this prayer for our Nation. Amen

8th Grade Etiquette Training

Saint Paul’s eighth grade class has had the opportunity to refine their dining skills with a program sponsored by the Saint Paul’s Renaissance Board. During lunch and Physical Education classes the students are transported in groups to N’Tini’s Restaurant in Mandeville. The owners, Donna and Mark Benfatti, with the help of their staff presented a program on dining etiquette which included tips on: setting the table, using the correct utensils, taking and passing food, appropriate dinner conversation, and ordering, treating and tipping wait staff. The students enjoyed the lessons and improved their manners, but the best part of the class was the delicious lunch of potato soup, green salad, chicken and pasta, and Bananas Foster. The students returned to school for the rest of the afternoon, well-mannered and well-fed. by Michael Burke
