FROM THE PASTOR ’S COLLECTION

Encyclical of Archbishop Demetrios for Holy Pascha 2015

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Χριστός Ἀνέστη! Christ is Risen!

In the light and joy of this blessed and holy Day of Resurrection, we gather to celebrate our Holy and Sacred Pascha. This Pascha, this Feast of Feasts, is a celebration of life, abundant and eternal. It is a celebration of the power of grace. It is a day above all others when we proclaim throughout the world that the chains of sin and death have been broken, we have victory through Christ, and through the power of the Cross and the Resurrection we are being transformed from death to life.

On this blessed day, Lent ends by being transformed into a feast of joy. The time for contrition of heart and contemplation has past as we engage all our soul, body, and mind with the jubilance before us. Repentance has received forgiveness and grace. We have returned home and are welcomed with the loving embrace of the Father. We have completed the journey of faith, and in the glory of this Holy Pascha we glimpse eternal life and rest. Our hope in the blessed promises of God has been fulfilled in the Holy Resurrection.

This transformation has come to us through our Risen Lord. On this holy day we celebrate because of Him Who said I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25), and we celebrate with Him. He is in our midst. We have seen His Passion. In the journey through the wilderness we have seen our Lord lifted up on the Cross to bear our shame and sin through His suffering. Today, Jesus Christ is risen in holiness and glory, revealing the power of eternal and abundant life. We greet Him in joy. We receive His body and blood in thanksgiving. We proclaim to the world His Resurrection. We are transformed in the light and life that comes from Him.

Our transformation changes everything! In the radiance and glory of this Holy Pascha we find the meaning of life as it was created to be. We see our goal, our purpose, our completion and our eternity. Our hope for the journey of life is strengthened. Our understanding of life, of others, of the world, and of all creation is changed in the truth and certainty of the Resurrection. Fear is vanquished, the threat of death is annihilated, and the weakness of sin is exposed in the enduring light of our Lord’s holiness and glory. We are now free from the guilt, our communion with God has been restored, and He offers to us an abundant life of peace and joy.

As we gather on this day, let us be completely filled with the joy of Holy Pascha! Let us purify our senses, and we shall see Christ! Let us celebrate the saving Pascha of God! Let us worship our Holy Lord Jesus! Let us forgive everything in the light of the Resurrection and proclaim: Christ is risen from the dead, by death He has trampled down death, and on those in the tombs He has bestowed life!

With paternal love in the Risen Lord,

†DEMETRIOS

Archbishop of America

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED OUR PARISH CELEBRATE LENT AND PASCHA

Christ is Risen!

On behalf of the entire Parish Council, we wish to offer a heartfelt thank you to everyone in our parish family who contributed in so many ways to make this Lenten season, Holy Week and Pascha so extra special and glorious!

So many people generously made donations and offerings of their time and talents and it would be impossible to list them all by name. Here is an attempt to remember everyone!

Thank you

• to all of our parishioners and readers who participated in the Salutations to the Virgin Mary Services and the Akathistos Hymnos. Also, many thanks to those who donated flowers to adorn the Icons during these services.

• to all the parishioners who donated flowers or who made donations which offset the cost of the flowers, candles, palms, and bay leaves used at this Holy Time, especially during the various Sundays during Lent and especially throughout Holy Week and Pascha.

• to all the members of our parish family who donated of their time to chant, and read during the numerous services held, especially during Holy Week.

• to our Chanter, Choir, Choir Director and organist who assisted in making this Pascha especially meaningful.

• to all the members of our parish family who coordinated the Good Friday Retreat for the youngsters of our parish. They are our future and we must nurture them!!

• to the talented people of our parish who helped decorate our Kouvouklion so that it would be worthy and beautiful enough to contain the Body of Christ.

• to all who assisted in preparing and training the myrrbearing girls for their Good Friday contribution. They did a beautiful job and how wonderful to see so many girls filling up the pews!

• to all who donated the eggs and those who helped to dye the eggs and then wrap them in netting and ribbons in preparation for Pascha!

• to all who brought food to our pot-luck Paschal Meal, which was enjoyed by all. • to all who volunteered their time to assist with distribution of the candles during Holy Week. • to our acolytes who worked so hard during Holy Week.

And finally, a warm and heartfelt thank you to Father George who lead us all through our Lenten Journey this year, and also to his lovely Presvytera Elaine, who made sure Father kept up his strength, especially during the busy Holy Week schedule!!

Most sincerely and with love and affection: St Spyridon Parish Council

PENTECOST Pentecost occurred on the fiftieth (pentekoste in Greek) after the Jewish Passover and the fiftieth day after the Resurrection of Christ. This was also a day on which the Jews celebrated a great feast commemorating the giving of the Tables of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai. Jerusalem was full of foreigners, Jews living abroad (called the “Diaspora”), who had come from all corners of the world to celebrate the feast. Several days earlier, a group of about one hundred and twenty disciples had gathered together with the apostles and the Theotokos. At Peter’s suggestion they had chosen a twelfth apostle to replace Judas, Matthias. The disciples were waiting in Jerusalem for the coming of the Comforter whom Jesus had promised. They were full of joyful expectation. They would finally know Him of whom Jesus had said, “It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you” (Jn 16:7). Since Jesus had departed and now sat at the right hand of the Father (Mk 16:19), He could now fulfill His promise. And so Jesus bestowed the Spirit upon them on the anniversary of the day that Moses had been given the Law, “for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (Jn 1:17). When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all gathered in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own language?...We hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” This is the story of Pentecost as told by Luke in the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. We also celebrate this event with thanksgiving, singing the troparion of the feast:

Blessed are Thou, O Christ our God, Who hast revealed the fisherman as most wise By sending down upon them the Holy Spirit. Through them Thou didst draw the world into Thy net. O Lover of man, glory to Thee!

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Christ is Risen! Now that glorious Spring is here, we will finally be able to finalize the quotes for the painting of the outside of the church. We have a few more bids out there and then we should be ready to go. The new front doors will be stained when the weather warms up a bit more. Right before Holy Week, the church ceiling (near the balcony) was repainted, as well as the Pangari (which had water damage due to the leak in the ceiling). The Parish Hall clean-up is scheduled for May 2 at 10am. The refinishing of the church pews has also begun. The pews will be physically removed from the church and then carefully stripped, repaired, refinished and then returned and reinstalled in the church. This project will take some time and the pew removal/refinishing will be done in sections. We should be done with the entire effort by July (if not sooner). The entire project, undertaken as part of our 100th Anniversary celebration, is being underwritten through the generosity of our parishioners. And we would be remiss not to thank Mrs. Anna Kyriakides for spearheading the fundraising for this project. The planning by the 100th Anniversary Planning Committee has hit its stride. DON’T FORGET—our 100th Anniversary Divine Liturgy and Community Luncheon will be held on 27 SEPTEMBER and our 100th Anniversary Ball will be held on November 21st at the Hotel Viking. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Planning for this year’s Hellenic Fest has also begun in earnest. Please take the opportunity to volunteer to support this worthy church fundraiser. The next Parish Council Meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 5th at 7:00 pm. Should any parishioner have any item of concern or any matter they wish to have placed on the next meeting’s Agenda, please contact any Parish Council member, or the undersigned. Respectfully, Zoe Adamedes Parish Council President 274-1316/[email protected]

THANK GOD FOR MOM !

The greeting card industry invented Mother's Day as an excuse to sell more cards, candy, and flowers… but the appreciation that the secular world shows for its "Mom" on one Sunday in May can be so much more! Mother's Day can be a special day for your family to thank God for everything Mom, and Grandma, and Great-Grandma do throughout the year, almost an unofficial "feast". Here are some ideas for celebrating it, with a Christian twist:

• Attend Liturgy and sit together as a family, and partake in Communion together. Include your Godmothers as well, if they attend the same parish.

• Enlist Dad's help to prepare a Mother's Day brunch for Mom (and Grandma and Great-Grandma if you are blessed to have them with you) after Liturgy. Pancakes, waffles, or Sunday Oatmeal (hot cinnamon oatmeal topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel or maple syrup) are good, easy choices.

• Sing "Many Years" for Mom at brunch or dinner. • Remember any Grandmothers, Great-Grandmothers, and Godmothers who are

deceased by singing "Memory Eternal." Visit the cemetery if possible, and bring along fresh flowers.

• Read and/or talk about what Christ's Mother, the Theotokos, did that was so special to all of us… include the prayer to the Virgin in your blessings for Mother's Day.

• Skip the store-bought greeting cards, and make one of your own, with a prayer for Mom, and a list of things she does that you're thankful for…

• Enlist Dad's help again to plant a flowering tree, rose bush or a whole garden, or erect a bird feeder for Mom. [The bird feeder can be store-bought, or constructed from sticks, tin-pans, or plastic milk jugs and dowels.]

• Complete the one chore that Mom has to remind you about the most ALL WEEK without being told; when she notices, say "Many Years, Mom!"
