The Salters’ Company

One of the Twelve Great City Livery Companies, the Salters’ Company received its first licence from Richard II in 1394 but, like other livery companies, was probably in existence prior to 1066. As well as dealing in salt, Salters were experts in the dry salting of fish and meat and also dealt with flax, hemp, logwood, cochineal, potash and chemical preparations.

The Company’s activities today are centred on charitable and education activities. As well as supporting the Salters’ Institute, its flagship charity, the Company provides Almshouse accommodation and support to residents in Maidenhead and Watford, and grants to charities and individuals through the Salters’ Charitable Foundation. The Foundation supports a wide range of causes that provide positive outcomes for beneficiaries. Its current areas of focus are relief of need, education and community development.

The Salters’ Institute, a charitable organisation within the Company, was founded as a response to the education of soldiers returning from WW1. Since 1918 the Institute has established a reputation for excellence, working with a range of partners including the Royal Society of Chemistry and the University of York.

The Institute’s influence stretches across the world. Its aims are clear: to promote the appreciation of, and interest in, chemistry and the related sciences amongst young people and to encourage chemistry-based careers. The Salters’ Institute delivers numerous initiatives including its Festivals of Chemistry, Awards Programme, and Curriculum Development.

Alviar’s passion for science is what allowed him to start his dream course in Biomedical Science at Oxford University in October, but currently, Alviar is in Singapore undergoing ground-breaking CAR-T treatment for T cell leukaemia. Alviar hopes you enjoy reading his essay as much as he enjoyed writing it!

Arev Melikyan | King Edward VI School Southampton

Having graduated from King Edward VI School, Southampton with A levels in Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry, Arev is now studying Medicine at University College London. A keen interest in immunology and current affairs led to Arev writing his essay on Covid-19 vaccine development, which correctly anticipated the licensing of an mRNA vaccine. Outside of his studies, Arev enjoys performing music with his sister and cooking.

The Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology course was developed by the University of York Science Education Group and the Nuffield Curriculum Centre. Awards are presented annually to the candidates who have achieved the highest marks in the Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology examinations. In the absence of examinations in 2020, however, students were invited to submit essays on a topic of their choice.

Scott started at Holly Lodge in his first technician role almost six years ago after working in the oil and gas industry. For the past three years he has been the sole technician in the department, servicing practical work for KS3-KS5 with over 800 students. It is a very rewarding job where no two days are the same and he is very proud to have been awarded a Salters’ Technician Award this year!

Tina has been a science Technician for ten years. She has a science background though considers herself a generalist and currently is a lone technician covering all three sciences. Tina has been in her most recent post for 18 months where there have been challenges of bringing the Science prep rooms up to standard whilst providing practicals that are trialed, work and set out in an accessible manner to enable students to get the most out of their practical activities and, hopefully, encouraging their interest in science.

Adam InnisHarriet Scott Adam and Harriet have been the technician team at Nottingham Emmanuel School since 2016, and have overseen immense improvements to technical provision within the school. Now they wish to aid others to see similar improvements and take over organising the technician network in Nottingham with the aim of organising free local CPD for technicians in the area. They are both working with the Science Learning Partnership to share the network further.
