Subject Integrated Science Project

Work Specification:

1. TASK 1: Physics: Measurement of samples taken.

2. TASK 2: Chemistry: Analysis of suitability of four different soils, using pH scale

3. TASK 3: Biology: Selecting and growing suitable plants in a particular soil

Instructions / Guidelines:

General Instructions: a. Using cardboard/ wood, make a strong tray. b. The approximate size of the tray may be 45 cm x30 cmx 6cm c. Divide the tray into four equal blocks. d. Fill four blocks with four different soils. e. Do not add anything to the soil. f. Complete the following tasks.

1. TASK 1: Before filling the blocks, measure and record the following

a. Length (l), breadth (b) and height (h) of the Tray b. Calculate the volume of each block. (Formula: l x b x h in cm3) c. Quantity of the each type of soil in grams and kilograms

2. TASK 2: a. Take a universal pH paper b. Wet each type of soil and dip the pH paper into the soil c. Observe the colour change in the paper. d. Record the colour observed and the pH value of the soil.

3. TASK 3: a. Soak 4 different kinds of seeds overnight and plant them in your soil tray. b. You may use pea seeds, soya bean seeds, tomato seeds, chilli seeds,

fenugreek (methi) or coriander seeds. c. Sprinkle a little water on the germinating seeds to keep the soil just moist

enough. d. The above activity is to be done 10 days before school reopens in June. e. The students are supposed to bring their project when school reopens. f. All your activity and observation should be supported by photographs and

a brief writeup where required.
