It would be diff icult to find better words

to describe the mission and method of

Cristo Rey Columbus High School than

those off ered by its President, Jim Foley.

The signature component of Cristo Rey

Columbus High School is the Professional

Work-Study Program, a national educa-

tional model in which local businesses

invest in student workers to make col-

lege-preparatory education possible for

students with economic need.

Cristo Rey Columbus is the only central

Ohio high school off ering the nationally

recognized Professional Work-Study Pro-

gram (PWSP) which, coupled with a rigor-

ous college-prep curriculum, provides a

proven path to college for its graduates.

This unique educational approach, in

partnership with the business commu-

nity, has historically resulted in 100% of

Cristo Rey graduates being accepted by at

least one college or university.

In 2013, Cristo Rey Columbus became the

26th school in the nationwide Cristo Rey

network of Catholic, college-preparatory

high schools open to students of all faiths.

Enrolling only economically-disadvan-

taged youth, the Cristo Rey Network of-

fers a distinctive approach to high school

education that equips students with the

knowledge, character and skills to trans-

form their lives. Cristo Rey schools off er

a culture of high expectations that blends

rigorous academics, four years of profes-

sional work experience, moral values and

support for students to and through col-

lege.

“The impact of Cristo Rey’s innovative

Professional Work-Study Program on

student achievement has been extraordi-

nary,” Foley said, “as proven at the other

Cristo Rey schools across the country. Our

students have typically grown up with few

educational choices.”

In the newly renovated former Ohio

School for the Deaf located in downtown

Columbus, Cristo Rey Columbus has

a current combined enrollment of 176

freshmen and sophomores. Additional

freshman classes will be enrolled over the

next two years when the school enroll-

ment expands to include a full comple-

ment of 9th through 12th grade students.

Under the PWSP, students work five days

per month in a professional setting with

the school’s business sponsors, enabling

them to earn a significant portion of the

cost of their own high school education

while also developing interpersonal and

workplace skills and personal responsi-

bility.

Sophomore Josh Moraine spends his PWSP days organizing and

updating property management and leasing files for Pizzuti, a

local real estate developer. “Having Josh work in the property

management department at Pizzuti has been a great experience

for us,” said Amie Washburn, senior property manager at Pizzuti

and Moraine’s direct supervisor. “He has been most helpful in the

organization of special projects assigned to him. His eagerness

to learn and his work ethic is refreshing.”

Moraine says his work experience has not only taught him about

the real estate industry, but he’s also gained “valuable time man-

agement and organizational skills that assist him in his job and

at school.”

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is a founding business partner

and student Vanesa Mora is in her second PWSP year working in

Administration. Her supervisor, Sharon Wright, executive assis-

tant to the CFO, says the experience has been unforgettable.

“Vanesa comes to work every day ready to take on any task she is

given,” Wright said. “Her attitude toward learning and doing each

job perfectly has allowed her to complete her tasks errorless and

usually ahead of time. As her supervisor, I plan Vanesa’s daily

tasks, gathering them from anyone on the floor that needs her

help on her assigned work day. The quality of her work has been

so outstanding that people are saving jobs specifically for her to

do. My hope is that Vanesa will be able to return next year to

continue growing in a corporate environment and to learn more

about working in a pediatric hospital.”

“Without our PWSP business sponsors, our important mission

would not be possible,” Foley said. “The real bottom line is that

the PWSP transforms lives.”

More and more central Ohio busi-

nesses and organizations are

discovering the Cristo Rey Co-

lumbus High School Professional

Work-Study Program, a proven business

model designed to meet their entry-level

employee needs while bolstering their bot-

tom line.

Cristo Rey Columbus employs an inno-

vative Professional Work-Study Program

(PWSP) in which students work five full

days a month in the professional off ices of

business sponsors. The students’ earnings

fund a significant portion of the cost of their

private, college-prep education. The PWSP

benefits businesses and organizations by

providing a less expensive alternative to

hiring entry-level clerical employees with-

out the burden of administrative overhead.

Every Cristo Rey Columbus student takes

a full course load of college prepara-

tory classes in addition to working for the

school’s business sponsors that represent

such diverse industries and organizations

as insurance, law, banks, hospitals, con-

struction, manufacturing, logistics, the

public sector, and social service agencies.

Here’s how PWSP works. A team of four stu-

dents fills the entry-level clerical functions

of one full-time work-study position. Each

member of the student team works one full

day each week plus an extra day every four

weeks, excluding school holidays. Students

perform tasks such as filing, copying, scan-

ning, delivering inter-off ice mail, records

management, assembling information

packets, basic data-entry, indexing, greet-

ing visitors, answering calls, assisting with

special projects and much more.

Students are employees of the PWSP, not

the sponsoring organization, which means

Cristo Rey handles all aspects of the stu-

dents’ employment including I-9s, Workers’

Compensation insurance, etc. The PWSP

is a simple, fee-for-service contract with

none of the usual administrative overhead

expenses, and the fee can be deducted as

a business expense, rather than as a chari-

table contribution. Cristo Rey Columbus

transports students to and from their work-

places, trains students in general profes-

sional off ice skills and provides ongoing

supervisory support.

Cristo Rey Columbus business sponsors re-

port that, perhaps more than helping them

meet their workforce and financial needs,

the PWSP gives them the special chance to

work with a diverse group of highly motivat-

ed, enthusiastic young people, along with

the enormous satisfaction that comes from

positively impacting a young person’s life.

Grange Insurance was among the first busi-

nesses sponsors when the school opened

its doors in the fall of 2013. Grange Assistant

Vice President for Community Relations Pa-

tricia Eshman recalled that “we were proud

to be among the founding sponsors of the

Cristo Rey PWSP program. Grange is very

dedicated to ‘lift ing up’ throughout the

central Ohio community, and helping to lift

up high school students was a perfect fit.”

Ken Kozek, vice president of Claims at Grange,

added that “the young men and women from the

high school have really embraced this opportunity.

They really do want to learn about the corporate

world and the value they might be able to add to it.

We’re just very grateful to help give our students the

chance to experience things they might not other-

wise be able to experience.”

Marle’na Mitchell, a sophomore at Cristo Rey Co-

lumbus, has big dreams of becoming a neurosur-

geon someday. Although her PWSP role at Grange

Insurance might not prepare her for the operat-

ing room, it has already elevated her professional

skills and will certainly help her achieve her college

and career goals. “It’s amazing to be able to work

in a professional environment and still be in high

school,” said Mitchell. “I think this will look great on

my college application.”

Mitchell’s hard work at Grange has not gone un-

noticed. “She has high aspirations for herself and

for one so young, she has ethics that you don’t

find a lot in young people these days,” shared An-

gie White, claims processing manager at Grange

and Mitchell’s supervisor. “I can see her reaching

her goals in life and making a name for herself. My

team and I have enjoyed teaching and interacting

with her. We think very highly of her.”

Open-minded. Progressive.

Inclusive.

Everybody knows that the Marines are

always “looking for a few good men.”

For the third straight year, as winter

turns into spring, Carolyn Flahive is

looking for a few – actually more than a few

– good central Ohio businesses and organi-

zations to sign on as job sponsors for stu-

dents at Cristo Rey Columbus High School.

Flahive is Director of the school’s Profes-

sional Work-Study Program (PWSP). It is

her job to recruit a new crop of businesses

and other organizations willing to welcome

Cristo Rey Columbus students into their

workplaces as part of the PWSP.

Located downtown in the Discovery District,

Cristo Rey Columbus enrollment stands at

176 freshman and sophomore students,

each of whom participates in the PWSP.

This year they fill work-study positions at

44 businesses and organizations in Colum-

bus and the surrounding suburbs. Flahive

must find between 35 and 40 more full-time

work positions when Cristo Rey Columbus

adds its third freshman class for the 2015-

16 school year. Work-study teams consist of

students from all grade levels, which this fall

will include juniors, sophomores, and fresh-

men.

“As we are recruiting 8th graders to be part

of our next freshman class, we tell them

that the PWSP program experience will be a

window into what their lives could look like

aft er they leave us, go on to college and find

their place in society,” Flahive said. “And we

share with our prospective businesses and

other community organizations that be-

coming one of our job sponsors will trans-

form their workplaces with the infusion of

bright, eager enthusiastic young workers.”

She added, “It might just change their own

lives and those of their employees when

they recognize the positive diff erence they

are making in the lives of young people who

come from economically-disadvantaged

backgrounds. Along the way, our work-

study program also just happens to be good

for an organization’s bottom line, as well, be-

cause our job sponsors are not responsible

for providing benefits or dealing with a lot of

paperwork typically necessary in a standard

workplace. We take care of all of that.”

Bob Grote, CEO of the Grote Company, has

been impressed with “the professionalism

and the focus on the core skills needed in

today’s workplace” exhibited by his compa-

ny’s team of Cristo Rey Columbus students.

“And the moral aspect of the school, itself,

really resonates with many people at our

company,” he added.

Cristo Rey Columbus is a college-prep,

Catholic high school that empowers stu-

dents from low-to-moderate income fami-

lies of all faiths to graduate from college

and achieve a life-time of success. A focus

on personal responsibility and academic

rigor, combined with the unique Profes-

sional Work-Study Program, helps students

to reach their full potential and pay for a sig-

nificant portion of their private education.

“The students are very professional, re-

spectful, hard-working and capable of

much more than we ever imagined,” Grote

added. This is a program with true local

impact. These young employees have

contributed much to our company and

produced real and useful results. And the

best part is that we get to watch them as

they grow into young adults.”

“Being a Cristo Rey Columbus job sponsor

has been a very humbling and gratifying

experience,” said Chris DeCapua, owner of

Dawson. “We are literally helping to shape

these kids’ lives. It’s great for me as an em-

ployer to see the incredibly positive eff ect

it’s having on my staff . They are just so en-

gaged with our students.”

“The great thing about the Cristo Rey

students,” DeCapua said, “is they are like

sponges – they can’t get enough, want

to learn more, want to be involved in our

company as much as humanly possible.

This bodes very well for the future. I am

constantly reminded of challenges em-

ployers face with lots of people in the work

force who, honestly, lack adequate skills

or qualifications. Cristo Rey Columbus

High School, in its own perhaps small way,

is transforming that landscape.”

Otterbein University President Kathy A.

Krendl is an enthusiastic supporter of Cris-

to Rey Columbus, saying that “The align-

ment of the core values of the school and

our university is ideal. We share the same

commitment to experiential learning and

to service. Working with students who face

financial and other at-risk challenges of-

fers us the wonderful opportunity to help

them prepare themselves for college with

an enhanced sense of pride and aspira-

tion.”

Dr. Krendl said the university deliberately

chose its admissions and student suc-

cess off ices as the designated workplaces

for its Cristo Rey students. She observed

that “those off ices are the two most criti-

cal points of entry into the university for

our own incoming students. It just makes

perfect sense to enable our Cristo Rey

students to see firsthand what that expe-

rience is all about, even as they attend

to their own daily work responsibilities,

which include program support, event

planning, general operations and much

more.”

Vice President and Commercial Lender

Pete Cassanos, from Park National Bank’s

downtown Columbus off ice, encourages

other businesses to consider becoming a

Cristo Rey Columbus PWSP partner for the

2015-16 school year. “Go for it,” Cassanos

said. “We have a responsibility to share

our time, talents and treasures with wor-

thy community organizations and espe-

cially with our local youth.  I can’t wait to

read about these kids 20 years from now

and reflect upon the small role we may

have played in their success!”

“We believe the Cristo Rey Columbus Pro-

fessional Work-Study Program exemplifies

all that can be achieved when educators

join forces with business leaders,” Fla-

hive said. “The professional work place

experience allows students to envision a

successful future that is attainable if they

work hard and stay in school. We truly en-

courage students to believe they can be

anything they want to be in life.”

Organizations interested in becoming a Cristo Rey Columbus job sponsor are encour-aged to contact Carolyn Flahive at 614-223-9261 or at [email protected].
