The scientific basis for bryophyte conservation: an introduction

The European Committee for Conservation of Bryophytes (ECCB) is an independent com mittee established in 1990. The committee works to promote bryophyte conservation through out Europe and to stimulate research related to bryophyte conservation. Under this mandate

we arranged a symposium in Trondheim, Norway, 31 August - 4 September 1998 with the

title The Scientific Basis for Bryophyte Conservation. Many delegates gave lectures and pre sented posters, and contributed to discussions on the topic. As a result, 13 papers are pub lished in this volume.

The Department of Botany and the Natural History Museum at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim hosted the symposium. On behalf of the ECCB board I would like to thank all those who contributed to arranging the symposium and all delegates for a fruitful meeting. I would also like to thank Fylkesman in Nord-Tr0ndelag and Fylkesman in S0r-Tr0ndelag for financial contribution.
