Rather than refer to myself as an expert at any social media platform, I have a way of doing things I have found to be effective and I’m obsessed with sharing what I learn. The Scoop on Periscope & My Favorite Video Tools for Social Media But before we dig into the good stuff, there are a few things you need to know…

#1 – DISCLAIMER: I do not claim to be “the” Periscope expert (It’s only been around for a few months at the time of this release). Rather than refer to myself as an expert at any social media platform, I have a way of doing things I have found to be effective and I’m obsessed with sharing what I learn. Connections are key! #3 - “Do I REALLY need another social media platform?”…You DON’T! You absolutely do not need to jump off of Instagram or now abandon Facebook. The Social media platform that works best for you is not always the “latest, greatest, trendiest app” that everyone is using. If you have more clients and customers than you need and your networking opportunities are on point, maybe now is not the time to invest in yet another platform. Ok let’s do this! In this TUTORIAL, I will cover:

ü How you can use Periscope to spread a message, improve brand awareness and build your business.

ü How to set up a Periscope account ü My favorite video tools for filming high quality videos from your phone (for Periscope

broadcasts or ANY social media site) ü How to run a broadcast, current best practices and how to use this platform to build

your online business ü How to repurpose your Periscope broadcasts on your other social media platforms to

grow your list So What’s the Scoop on This Periscope Thing? Periscope is an app owned by Twitter. It runs on both Androids and iPhones and allows you to broadcast live using the camera on your smartphone. It’s crazy simple, is a super easy tool for running live broadcasts and the social aspect makes it even more fun. While tuning into the broadcast, your viewers can tap the screen to send a stream of hearts to show their like or appreciation for what you’re sharing. In my opinion, the brightly colored stream of hearts, the ability to share on social media, and the ability to interact with viewers via comments makes this app stand out from any other live broadcasting medium. How do you get it? Well, it’s free! All you have to do is download it from your app store. When searching for “Periscope” in the app store, you will find several search results. Download the app that is associated with Twitter. Download the Periscope App for iPhones: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/periscope/id972909677?mt=8 Download the Periscope App for Androids: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tv.periscope.android&hl=en

How to Start A Periscope Account After downloading the app, you will set up your profile. In your bio, write a few sentences about yourself that explain who you are and what people can expect when they come to your channel. Be sure to link to your Twitter account. When setting up your account, use your twitter profile. This way you can share your broadcasts and alert followers that you’re live via Twitter. You will also want to include your website URL, preferably a link to one of your freemiums where people can give you their email address to receive more helpful content from you in order to build your email list – because ultimately that’s the goal in social media.

Include a great photo for your bio pic that is clear and shows people what to expect when they follow you. My Favorite Video Tools for Filming High Quality Videos from Your Phone These are the tools I use, love and recommend to all my friends when it comes to filming great videos for your online business. You don’t need a studio and a ton of costly equipment. You can start with just your smart phone and some of the tools listed below, and create high quality footage for extremely cheap. Because I use and recommend these tools, I am an affiliate for some of the things I have listed below (meaning I get a commission when someone uses my link to make a purchase). If you use my link (just copy/paste in your browser), I greatly appreciate it – however, please don’t feel like you need to. These are just great tools that I would recommend regardless of

Cover Picture

The camera view from first few seconds of clicking “Start Broadcast” will be used as a cover picture in the replay.

Environment

It’s important that you are broadcasting in an environment that doesn’t have too many distractions for the viewers such as background noise, poor lighting, etc.

How to Begin Your broadcast

Click Start Broadcast ***Your followers will take a few seconds to jump on the live broadcast so what you say within the first few seconds of going live will mostly be viewed by the replay viewers if you choose to keep your broadcast up for viewers to replay for 24 hours.

Flipping the Camera

The broadcast starts on the forward facing camera. To flip the camera, double tap the screen or swipe down during the broadcast and click the flip camera icon like shown below!

Comments and Interacting

You will see comments show up on the screen as pictured below. This enables the viewers to interact with each other and you as the broadcaster.

Replay viewers will be able to see the comments from the live broadcast but new comments can’t be made after you have ended the live broadcast.

Hearts

Hearts are given when a viewer taps the screen during the live broadcast or the replay. Hearts give credibility and increase your rating/popularity on periscope.

Ending Your Broadcast

To end your live broadcast, swipe down and click “Stop Broadcast" shown at the top of your screen like pictured below.

After you end the broadcast, your analytics will pop up to show you the amount of views, retention rate, duration of video, and number of hearts received.

You will also have the option to save your broadcast to your camera roll and decide whether you want the video to be available to replay. If you decide to keep the replay up, it will stay up for 24 hours and then disappear.

How to promote your broadcast replay

Promote your broadcast replay by using other social media platforms! Share a little bit about what you covered in the broadcast to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Network like a Boss!

How to get to a full broadcast Suggest that the viewers share the broadcast by swiping right or clicking the person icon in the bottom right corner of the screen during the broadcast and clicking share. The first broadcast you do won’t be your best. Practice, practice, practice. Be consistent and provide value and your broadcasts will start to fill up!

Reply Function

As shown here, you can click on the commenter’s comment and click reply so it auto-fills their username in your comment. When you see an interesting comment, tap on the comment and click reply. Respond to that person to interact with them!

Using your name in the comments

The best commenting practice is to write your name at the end of every comment you send to let the broadcasters and viewers easily identify your name.

Who to Follow and Interact with The people you are looking for are typically similar to you and have similar interests are probably tuning into the same periscope broadcasts as you.

Being helpful and not distracting If you see a viewer asking something that you can politely answer, it could be helpful to the broadcaster. But don’t distract the broadcaster and make off topic comments that will. Don’t just go into a broadcast to interact with all the viewers. You should be listening to the broadcast and interact with just 1 or 2 people. Don’t ask a bajillion off topic questions.

Interacting with fellow commenters

-The best way to use periscope is by tuning in and connecting with other people in the streams of those who are popular scopers. Yes, watching all of these periscopes would be a waste if you jumped on them and just lurked. But you’re not doing that. Get in, and comment. Interact with people after the broadcast by taking their periscope username and searching for that username on twitter. Periscope doesn’t offer direct messaging so it’s best to get connected on twitter.

Don’t Sell

-Whether it’s your broadcast or not, don’t sell. Create relationships. As the viewer/commenter, don’t try to pitch something to another viewer or the broadcaster. That’s spammy. Interact with people and use this networking opportunity as a way to build relationships that will probably turn into your lifer at some point.

Recapping the broadcasters comments

-It can be helpful to the broadcaster to recap important points, tips, steps, etc. in the comments in case someone missed it.

Your bio is essential for networking

-If someone you are interacting with clicks on your comment and clicks “view profile” only to find that your profile lacks a bio, they won’t be as interested to connect with you.

Broadcasting Tips

Length

∗ There is no “exact” length. Some people “periscope” for 5 minutes, and some do 5 hour live broadcasts!

∗ If you’re captivating, knowledgeable and providing great content, you might be able to periscope for hours! Some do! But Periscope viewers love it because it’s live and allows for viewers to interact. So be sure to allow enough time to for viewers to ask questions,

∗ Allow people plenty of time to reply to your questions - Though Periscope is live,

there is about a 5 to 10 second delay between what you’re saying and when the viewer is actually sees the content. As such, when you ask a question, allow approximately 5 seconds for your question to be heard, then give another 10 seconds for people to type a reply.

∗ Use engagement and viewership as a guide but not as the only measure for whether you should continue. People will watch the rebroadcast, so even a broadcast that has 1 or zero viewers may reach 10, 100 or 1,000 on the replay. Finish your points just as you would if you were filming a youtube video.

∗ If there are no questions, yet, you know the most common type of question on this topic, answer the questions, objections or myths that viewers have.

∗ Once you’ve made your point and your audience seems to have no more questions, it’s polite to end your broadcast and allow people to return to their life.

∗ *Most viewers report that if the content is on point, they will stay and watch for

upwards of an hour or more in some instances

Page 14: The Scoop on Periscope & My Favorite Video Tools for Social … › wp-content › uploads › 2015 › ... · The Scoop on Periscope & My Favorite Video Tools for Social Media But

Hearts:

∗ Many considered it in poor taste to constantly ask viewers for hearts. But it’s certainly acceptable to thank people for their hearts and of course to use them as a way for people to demonstrate that they agree! If your audience is finding value, they will give you hearts.

∗ The heart stream is actually on the opposite side of their screen compared to

yours. In other words, as you are viewing your image on the screen, it appears that the hearts are on your right shoulder. However, if you point to your left side… your viewers see you pointing at the heart stream and/or the Periscope Icon count.

∗ It’s perfectly okay to give people a reason to tap the screen and give you hearts. For instance, if they agree with your point or want to affirm an idea.

Getting More Followers: ∗ The more frequently you run Periscope broadcasts, the more reach you will get.

∗ At the moment, periscope broadcasts disappear after 24 hours. So if you’re not

doing a daily scope, it may appear that you are inactive. It’s best to always have a broadcast up for the user to watch when they check out your profile.

∗ Add followers by adding value as a commenter!

∗ Jump on and be a dope viewer for those folks whose broadcasts you enjoy - (See above for tips on how to Network like a Boss)

∗ Include a call to action in the beginning and end of your broadcast. For instance,

“If you stay to the end, I will give you a way to download my free report or answer questions.”

Page 15: The Scoop on Periscope & My Favorite Video Tools for Social … › wp-content › uploads › 2015 › ... · The Scoop on Periscope & My Favorite Video Tools for Social Media But

Team Johnson

∗ Use good lighting. Test your lighting by using your front facing camera on your

phone before you begin. I highly recommend using a Ring Light or the Lumee Case light suggested above.

∗ Periscope DRAINS YOUR BATTERY! Try to be plugged into a power source if possible.

∗ Turn on your notifications to receive an alert when the people you follow are

broadcasting live, and remind your viewers to follow you and turn on their notifications as well to see future broadcasts

∗ Give people notice that you’re about to end your broadcast - then smile at the

camera for what seems like a long time; even wave if you want, but be sure to allow about 8 seconds from the time you end your broadcast to the time you officially pull down and tap the “end broadcast” button.

∗ Once you’ve decided to end your broadcast and to stop your broadcast, pull

down at the top of your screen and tap the red button. Cool Tips: -Use multiple devices to help read fast moving comments -Music intros (brief to avoid music right violations)

-You are able to choose to broadcast in landscape or portrait. I love using landscape if I’m planning on repurposing that broadcast.

-Creating your signature show (specific elements people come to expect, such as your sign up, a prayer, a dance break, you name it!) -Turning on your do not disturb feature so that receiving a call or any other notifications will not pop up and disrupt/stop your broadcast accidentally

Page 16: The Scoop on Periscope & My Favorite Video Tools for Social … › wp-content › uploads › 2015 › ... · The Scoop on Periscope & My Favorite Video Tools for Social Media But

Page 16 © Copyright 2015

Team Johnson

-Simultaneously using twitter on the laptop to interact with those who might be locked out of your broadcast or to interact with a broadcaster who has a full chat. ****How to Handle Rude comments - Don’t give the viewer your attention by pointing out their comment because ultimately, getting your attention will be exactly what they want. Just casually tap their comment and click block user as here.

How to Repurpose Your Periscope Broadcasts on Your Other Social Media Platforms Since your Periscope broadcast is only live for 24 hours, you will want to choose the option in your settings to “save video to phone” when doing a broadcast. That way, you don’t lose all of your footage. Right now, the easiest way to repurpose this content is by saving it to your phone or by playing the footage on your desktop and using Quicktime to record your screen. To view your Periscope from your desktop, go to www.periscope.tv/(Your Username Here) or set up an an account on www.Katch.me . Keep in mind that www.Katch.me is not sanctioned by Twitter or Periscope, so you shouldn’t rely on it to capture your content. As of now, following the broadcast, I send my team the saved broadcast. My team then edits down these videos (taking off the intros and outros and interaction with viewers) to create short, valuable content videos that can be shared and repurposed on other social media platforms.

To make the most of my time, these are a few of the ways I like to repurpose my broadcasts

-Use the audio portion as a podcast -Transcribe the broadcasts for new blog posts -Turn tips mentioned in broadcasts into tweets -Use portions of the video for future video content on other platforms.

This way, you get more bang for your buck and more reach for the time you are spending creating content to grow your list!
