Dear Friends, Many of you have asked my opinion about President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and his plans to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. My an-swer is simple. It should have happened years ago. Allow me to explain why. The Jewish tie to Jerusalem goes all the way back to ancient Biblical times, when King David

declared Jerusalem the capital of Judea. Two Temples stood in Jerusalem. When Jews were exiled to Babylonia, the Psalmist wrote, “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember you, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy” (Psalms 137:5 – 6). Even during our long exile, we said our prayers facing Jerusalem. At the end of the Passover Seder and Yom Kippur services, we declare “next year in Jerusalem.” This brings us to 1947 and the United Nations Resolution to establish a Jewish and an Arab state in the British Mandate of Palestine. At that point in history, there was not a people who identified as Palestinians, there were simply Jews and Arabs. Part of the UN resolution was that Jerusalem would remain an international city, not part of either the Jewish nor the Arab state. Reluctantly, Ben Gurion agreed to this internationalization of Jerusalem. The Arabs rejected the entire mandate, and five Arab nations attacked the fledgling state of Israel. The attack failed, Israel survived, but Jordan captured the eastern part of Jerusalem including the Jewish Quarter in the Old City and the Western Wall. For two decades Jews were forbidden to pray at our holiest site. Israel cap-tured West Jerusalem and declared it the capital of Israel. The government buildings including the Knesset were built in West Jerusalem. At this point the United States and other nations should have recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But the United States decided to wait for a permanent peace, a peace that would never come.In 1967 as Egypt and Syria threatened Israel, Israel warned Jordan to stay out of the war. Jordan refused. In six days Israel defeated the Arab armies and captured the rest of Jerusalem, including the Old City. Who can forget those famous words of Mordechai Gur, Hakotel Beyadenu – “The Wall is in our hand.” Israel declared that Je-rusalem would be one unified city. Again, the United States should have recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But they decided to wait for a final peace treaty. Meanwhile, the Palestinians have tried different tactics to destroy the state of Israel. They tried war. They tried terrorism. Now they are trying to delegitimize the state of Israel in the world community. Part of that dele-gitimation was to question the Jewish historical tie to Jerusalem. For example, in 1967 UNESCO declared east Jerusalem a holy site to the Moslem world, deplores Israel’s occupation, and makes no mention of the Western Wall or other sites holy to the Jews. Although I support the recognition of Jerusalem by the United States as the capital of Israel, I am well aware that Jerusalem is holy to Jews, Christians, and Moslems. Holy places must be safe and guarded. But fifty years have passed since the Six Day War. It is time to recognize facts on the ground. My hope is that this change in American policy will encourage the Palestinians finally to negotiate a peace settlement with Israel that will result in a two-state solution. I am sure that part of that final solution will include a capital of Palestine in eastern Jeru-salem. At that point, the United States can build a second embassy there. Perhaps I can dream that one united city can become the capital of two separate states. It was David Ben-Gurion who said that anyone who does not believe in miracles is not a realist.Shalom,Rabbi Michael Gold

I am writing this a few days before my concert taking place in Long Island. As I prepare I am reminded of the term hazzan/cantor. What does it mean to be a hazzan/cantor? The term haz-zan occurs frequently in Talmudic literature, where it refers to various types of officials, or "overseers." The hazzan ha-knesset (overseer of the synagogue) was the forerunner of the cantor. At the time he primarily functioned as synagogue caretaker rather than service leader. Among his duties were rituals like removing the Torah scrolls from the ark and blowing a trumpet to announce the beginning of Shabbat and festivals. He was also available to chant the service by request, but any capable congregant was permitted to do so.

The Geonic Period witnessed the coinciding growth of the liturgy and decline in general He-brew knowledge. Therefore, it became necessary to create a permanent position of service leader. The hazzan ha-knesset was a logical choice to occupy this role, as he was already involved in developing and guarding syna-gogue practice. During this period Jews also began demanding a beautified service, filled with inspiring musical content and liturgical poems.

Eventually hazzanim began notating their melodies and employing the rules of Western harmony in constructing pieces for hazzan and choir. This new level of cantorial artistry set the stage for the “Golden Age of Hazzanut,” a period between the two World Wars that witnessed the rise of cantors as recording artists, concertizers, and itinerant service leaders. These virtuoso singers were compared to the great opera of their day. They employed similar techniques with their vocal gymnastics, emotive flourishes, and drawn-out phrases which attracted audi-ences. The greats included Zavel Kwartin, Moritz Henle , Joseph “Yossele” Rosenblatt, Gershon Sirota, and Leib Glantz. Much of their music was recorded and dictated and is studied today at both JTS and HUC.

During the Golden Age, going to shul was like going to a show or opera. The solid technique and beautiful voices of the cantors set the stage for concertizing. They were very talented and fully capable of performing pieces from various operas, but surely could not do that during a Shabbat service. Because of those cantors, my colleagues and I traditionally put on a concert at their respective synagogues once a year. As I prepare for my concert in Long Island, I am beginning to think about my concert that will be here at Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek in the afternoon of Sunday, March 18, 2018. This concert will give my guest performer, Alix Paige and me an op-portunity to present to you not only new Jewish music but a variety of classical, Broadway show tunes, and some jazz. We hope to see you there!

Each time we enter another relationship, join an organization, take a new job, begin a new challenge – each time we reach for something else, we analyze the risk and anticipate the reward –hoping it will turn out as planned. We leave the homes and congregations in which we grew up, go off to college and graduate school, marry and start our own families- and join our own congregations. And so it was for Javier and me 12 years ago – when we deselected certain synagogues in favor of TBTST. Walking into the Early Childhood Center and meeting the ECC staff, we knew this was where we wanted our son to be. We were looking for a compromise between what we were each

used to – what we each wanted in a spiritual home for ourselves and our child – what felt right. We were embraced immediately and were engaged from the very beginning. Seeing the staff so passionate about being part of TBTST, how could I not be involved? I have watched how our synagogue has gone through changes during the past 12 years. New building, new directors, A Merger. All of these exciting moments that as a Board member I was a part of. I was a part of the continuing hope of a synagogue thriving when Conservative Judaism seems to be taking a downward trend. I am thrilled to be part of a synagogue that has a wonderful Rabbi, a musically gifted Cantor, a solid Youth Group, a new Early Childhood Director and a Hebrew Schoo which, is growing by leaps and bounds. Like all of you, I am a creature of habit in many ways. But sometimes, I make a deliberate and conscious effort to do things differently. For example, I get dressed and ready in no particular order each day, varying the routine to get my brain working. I take different routes to work, temple and various places I regularly go, to see different scenery, to have a slightly altered experience, to observe more things. And unlike many who have a preferred location in the sanctuary – when I am sitting on the Bima I look out into the congregation and my perspective and observations about the congregation change slightly. Each time, there is a little something new that I have not previously noticed. Each time, I see different people whose prayer, facial expressions, voices and energy impact my experience. There is a true diversity in the worship here- in the services, the music, and in the way in which we pray- individually and as a community – so that prayer is meaningful for us all. What strikes me most, however, is the composition of the congregation itself, viewed from many angles, ob-served from various vantage points. We are such a diverse gathering of clergy, staff, people of all ages, walks of life, backgrounds, religions, races, sexual orientations, zip codes, upbringings. It is the true richness of this com-munity, because despite the diversity among us, or for many of us, because of it, we have all chosen this holy congregation. When I was first approached about becoming President of this unique congregation- I was surprised, and flat-tered, and if truth be told, I was wondering about the judgment of the folks who were making this decision. After all, I am hardly the most reverent among us, clearly not the most religious, and perhaps not among the most easy going of the leaders this congregation has known. I have been known to be a little too opinionated at the board room table (and elsewhere), and perhaps a bit less astute in Temple politics than one might hope. So the question was, why say yes? My answer is quite simply, here I am, heneni. To me, being Jewish requires that one step up to the plate and to take responsibility. GIVING is at the very heart of our tradition, of our obligation and responsibility. We will continue to strive to build a culture of giving, something that has been lost along the way. Think back to a time when your grandfather was given an aliyah. To him and his father before him, this was the highest of honors. Chances are that your grandfather recognized the honor bestowed upon him by sending his shul a check, prob-ably not large by today’s standards, but he understood that the honor came with an obligation and responsibility to support his shul.

President's Messagecontinued

TBTST was proud to receive a Solomon Schechter award at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism biennial convention in Atlanta. The award was in honor of the twinning program between our religious school and our sister city in Nesher, Israel. Accepting the award were Rabbi Michael Gold, our incoming president Valerie Mercado, and our education director Ronit Goldstein who designed the program.

Our goals for this year: The demographics of American Jewry are declining; the economy is still in turmoil. Against that backdrop, we will remain fiscally prudent; continue to implement novel and innovative ways to attract and retain members; find more and different ways to meet the needs of our current membership, and maintain a warm and welcom-ing congregation despite our size. We will increase our reliance upon technology, becoming greener and more efficient, without sacrificing conversation or debate, remaining ever mindful that technology is only useful if it is inclusive, and if our approach and transition are sensitive, phased in and well communicated. I understand the enormous responsibility that being President will involve, and I’ll attempt to live up to all your expectations. With that said, I know that I won’t be doing this alone. I look to all of you - the executive officers, our newly installed board of directors, and of course the congregation, to accompany me on this journey. Please feel free to contact me, ask me, let me know about anything that’s on your mind regarding the temple or its operation. Thank you in advance for your input. As I conclude I would like to say a special thank you to my husband Javier, for always being patient with my com-ings and goings and my son Joshua for not complaining about me going to a zillion meetings already. To the board and members of the executive committee: I thank you for your service so far. I’ve grown close to many of you and hope you can provide me advice when requested and maybe even some unsolicited advice. For those of you leaving the board, I hope to see you return in future years, if you would so desire. Amir, our outgoing President, you leave me very large shoes to fill, figuratively speaking. You have given so much of your time, your energy, and your life to this temple for many, many years. I’ve seen firsthand what you have accomplished and how you have done it, and it is truly inspiring. Thank you for your guidance. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to address you this evening. On behalf of the Board of Directors and its Executive officers I wish you and yours a Shabbat Shalom.

This past week I attended the USCJ Conference in Atlanta, Georgia along with Rabbi Gold, Valarie Preston-Mercado, and Ronit Goldstein. There we joined 800 Jewish professionals and lay leaders from all over North America for this unique experience. Each day was filled with opportunities to learn, share, and listen to others who are committed to Jewish life and the conservative movement.

In three short days I attended ten sessions from Building Maintenance: Roofing, Mechanical Systems and Parking Lots, to Generation Y, Z, and Israel: Even More Complicated, Complex and Conflicted. All of which were informative and helpful but most of all it was interesting to

see and hear how my colleagues deal with similar Synagogue issues. I met people from Canada, Fort Worth, San Diego and people much closer to home, Miami.

Sunday night we were treated to a concert at the Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. served as pastor from 1960 to his death in 1968. The concert was performed by Nashama Carlebach, daughter of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, composer, singer and teacher. For me this was definitely one of the highlights of the trip hav-ing enjoyed Rabbi Carlebach's music for many years. To hear his daughter perform with a gospel backup in this historical church was amazing.

On Monday, Ronit, Valerie and Rabbi accepted the Solomon Schechter Artisan Award for Excellence in Innovation as exemplified in Twinning with an Israeli School. Ronit has created a program with the Nesher schools in Israel just outside of Haifa to create a people to people, student to student experience.

This was a wonderful three day experience and I look forward to attending other such conferences in the future.

There are so many learning subjects and information that need to be taught to our students. The learning material that needs to be covered, is at times overwhelming. As someone who was born and raised in Israel, instilling the love for Israel in our student’s hearts and souls is a priority. Israel is a living, breathing country, with a fascinating modern society created by multicultural individuals. Israel studies should be meaningful to our students! This will arise from personal interests, collaboration with peers, and positive engagements. This will then connect our students with their Jewish identity. This will not only make our students proud of who they are, but also take pride of their heritage. These big ideas were, and still are accomplished through our Nesher Twinning Program. A program that is now recognized by the

Conservative Movement as an exemplified program. The Solomon Schechter Award was awarded to Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek for excellence in innovation as exemplified in Twinning with an Israeli School. On Dec. 5th, the award was presented to us during the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Conference in Atlanta, GA. Once every other year, Kehilot from all around the United States can submit nominations for related programs conducted in their community. This year, 185 programs were nominated, of which 12 won in four different categories; Torah and T’fila, Inclusion and Kehilla, Israel Advocacy and Top Award. This is the second time (in a row) that our community has received an award. This fact was mentioned several times throughout the convention, as it is very impressive and unique. The success of this program could have not happened without the dedication and hard work of my co-worker, Tania Libman. Tania works at Beit Yehoshua Elementary School in Israel. She is the English teacher and works with the 5th & 6th grade students. Tania is involved with our twinning program since the beginning, about a decade ago. On Dec. 14th Tania arrived at Broward County for a visit. This was Tania’s first visit to the United States. I had the honor and pleasure to host Tania and introduce her to our Synagogue, Religious School and community at large. On Sunday, Dec. 17th Tania conducted a learning session with our 5-7th grade students about Anti-Semitism and cultural differences. Our 2nd-4th grade even got a taste of Israeli snack, and to vote for their favorite one. Israel and Nesher are two words that are often heard and read about in our community. Our students feel even more connected, by being engaged in school assignments and community wide mutual events. The twinning program taught our students that to be a Jew is to be part of a circle of belonging to a synagogue and to the Jewish community at large. Hopefully as our students grow older, they will continue to feel that special connection and hopefully one day they will visit Israel and Nesher. The excitement of educating our youth continues, as I look forward to the second half of the school year. On Sunday, Jan. 7th our 5-7th grade students will be going on their first field trip to the Holocaust Museum in North Miami Beach. A second field trip is planned for our 3rd and 4th grade students on Feb. 11th. They will be heading to visit the Sofer, on site and learn about the way a Sefer Torah is written. Tu B’shvat, Six Million Steps and Yom Hashoah are some of many more activities planned for our second half of the school year, all which will continue to instill love for Israel and profound knowledge of Judaism in our students. On behalf of our students and their families, I would like to thank our Sisterhood and Men’s Club for their endless support of our school. Their commitment and dedication to the next generation makes a notable difference in our students’ Jewish education.

New Year, New MeBy Hunter Gold

There it is, the breath that I finally get to take now that the holidays has finally ended. Now it’s the time for reflection. What did I enjoy most about last year? What do I hope for this year? I look back at this year and I am grateful for how fortunate my family is coming through the hurricane with minimal damage compared to others that were less fortunate. I am grate-ful for my school friends who have helped me make my transition into high school an easy and exciting experience. I am grateful to my Temple for giving me a place to come to ground myself and reinforce my belief system when I begin to doubt. I am grateful for my TBTST Youth Group friends who love and support me no matter what comes my way. I am grateful for my

family who encourage me to become the person I am today. When I see my reflection in the mirror, I can look back at myself and feel proud of the man I am growing into. I am grateful for technology that allows me to stay connected to those family and friends spread across the country. So what do I hope for myself for this coming year? What do I resolve to do different? This last half of the year I feel like I have been chasing time. Making up hurricane days lost, racing to catch up on material that was missed by being without power, keeping up with my loads of laundry my mom says are never-ending. This year I resolve to procrastinate less (as I write this on the last day before it is due). I resolve to make good use of my time and not wait until the very last minute. I resolve to breathe more and stress less if that’s possible. This year I hope for each one of us to take time to really appreciate the small things that collectively make up the big moments. Here’s to 2018!

We started the month with another informal game night, enjoyed laughs and each other’s company.

Be sure to attend our Sisterhood Shabbat on January 26. There may still be time to contact Sherry Klawsky if you would like to be included In the list of participants. And don’t forget our Book & Author luncheon on February 11. Nancy Cohen will be our guest author and she will be talking about her latest light hearted murder mystery “Hair Brained”. Be sure to return your invitations on time to secure your seat for this fun afternoon.

Advance notice about our activity for February 1, Sisterhood will learn a few aspects of self defense from a Broward Sheriff deputy. Come and join us for this primer class. We hope there will be sufficient interest and demand so we can offer and schedule additional classes on this relevant important topic for all of us.

On the topic of protection and safety, I’d like to offer for your consideration this short article written by a fellow Brit, Linda Washington. She writes:

When I think of protection, I don’t automatically think of a bird’s feathers. Though they might appear flimsy, there is more to them than appears at first glance. Bird feathers are an amazing example of God’s design....intel-ligent design truly at work. Feathers have a smooth part and a fluffy part. The smooth part of a feather has stiff barbs with tiny hooks that lock together like a zipper. The fluffy part keeps the bird warm. Together both parts of the feathers keep the bird protected from wind and rain. The image of God “[covering] us with His feathers “ in Psalm 91:4 and in other Bible passages (e.g. Ps. 17:8) is one of comfort and protection. The image that comes to mind is a mother bird covering her little ones with her feathers. Like a parent whose arms are a safe place to retreat from a scary storm or a hurt, God’s comforting presence provides safety and protection from life’s emo-tional storms. Though we go through trouble and heartache, we can face them without fear as long as our faces are turned towards God. He is our “refuge”. (Ps. 91:2, 4, 9).

Wishing you each a wonderful, happy and healthy New (secular) Year.

Regards, June

I wrote last month about the place a Father has in the family as relates to educating his children. In these times of stress and polarization of ideas we also have to consider the place the men of the temple have in acknowledging their mutual strengths and positive positions as it relates to our Temple. What I am alluding to is this. We all have positions, sometimes very strong ones, concerning the political climate in the country. Is the current administration’s positions good or bad for our families? Do we agree or disagree with the path that Israel has taken as it concerns the

path to peace and the Palestinian question? Do we truly believe the there is no way that people with opposing viewpoints can reach our personal degree of intellectual clarity or even sanity? It is incumbent upon us to realize that the people with whom we are disagreeing with are members of our temple family. As with all families our core values especially those the directly affect our lives are more similar than different. There always will always be differences but at the end of the day there is no one else that we can personally count on. Who will be there when we need to sit Shiva or have a minyan? Who will be There to support our school and educate our children? Who will be there to help conduct our services, visit the sick, and do all the other tasks that are really important to our lives? Political beliefs are important and should be calmly discussed but our core values, those that we share with our Temple Family, are most important in our everyday lives and those of our family. Remember to get your tickets for the Panthers/Capital hockey game on January 25. We will have a bus to take us. Also Yom Hashoah candles with be coming soon.

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we receive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

TEVET / SHEVAT 5778 NAME

YahzreitsOne of the most beautiful and meaningful customs of the Jewish people is remembering

those we have lost by memorializing our beloved through acts of Tzedakah and by saying Kaddish. The following Yahrzeits will be acknowledged and Kaddish will be said during

Shabbat Services on the dates below.

TEVET / SHEVAT 5778 NAME

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.

Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ _____________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) _________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew) ___________________________________________
