O n March 20 we had the good fortune to be able present our Tell America program to four AF Jr. ROTC classes at Leesburg High School from 7:30AM to 2:30PM.

Joel Briggs, co-chair of the Chap-ter’s Tell America Program, did an excellent job introducing the pro-gram and telling about the war and its aftermath; this was his first such presentations as Gloria Corbet, and

before her, Tom Thiel, made this presentation.

    I t is becom-ing increas-ingly apparent that age is up-on us. I so wish that Chapter 169

Members would come forward to volunteer for event & officer posi-tions.

This week alone, we have experi-enced Jack Reynolds’ announcing he has lung cancer. During the past months, Dick Zettlemoyer ended up in the hospital with a very com-plicated bypass surgery which cul-minated in a severe infection. This in turn pulled Doreen away to care for him. She now has also had a serious incident.

The positions of Secretary, Chap-lain, and Sergeant At Arms must be filled. Frank Keaser offered to help with the Secretarial position, but he doesn’t type. He very kindly taped our March meeting & not knowing where else to go, I typed the minutes by listening to the re-

cording. So, that position needs to filled by someone is adept at taking minutes and typing them. (The re-cording does help).

Ted Jansen served as Chaplain for our meeting and has agreed to act as Chaplain at the upcoming pic-nic. He has been a Chapter Officer for many years and it is unfair to ask to assume a permanent posi-tion.

Joel Briggs has been given way too much to do and as such asked me to be relieved from leading the 61st Armistice Celebration. He has ac-complished a lot of the steps re-quired so, I will ask Don Van Beck to help me and finish the project.

Gordon Talbot has been a great Chapter supporter & is now going thru the process of a knee replace-ment.

We agreed last year that events re-quiring physical effort such as pa-rades, etc., will have to be cur-tailed. It goes on and on.

Serious effort toward enlisting younger Korean Service Veterans is paramount.

When this year started, I had two goals. First, I was hoping we could greatly improve our income. Art Iversen and his crew are making this happen. The successful Walka-thon and the many fund drives is accomplishing that goal.

The other was to find the younger Korean Defense Veterans and in-terest them in joining our ranks. Bob Peters brought us Tom DeRo-sa. That is a great start and I have asked Tom to help. He has agreed and already started to make inquir-ies with his friends. Tom Thiel is working on a web page containing phases, words, etc. that might in-terest younger veterans.

I just know if we put the ’Pedal to the metal’ we can reach our goal. For sure, KWVA Association must become heavily involved with this

    quest. Wally Jones

    KWVA — The Association

A s we reported last month, the Chapter has two items under consideration by the Association. Our request for an Association bylaws revi-sion to allow certain Chapter officers and members of the Chapter BoD to be filled by an Associate mem-ber was discussed at the Association BoD meeting the week of March 9 in Irving TX. Following is a copy of relevant portions of Lewis Ewing’s Mar. 25 letter in-forming us of the Association’s actions.

“I am pleased to inform you that the Board approved a change to our Bylaws to allow active Associate Members to hold the Appointed Positions of Director(s), Secretary and Treasurer while the elected posi-

tions of President/Commander, 1st and/or 2nd Vice Presidents/Vice Commanders must continue to be chosen from Regular Members. The Bylaws revision reads as follows:

ARTICLE V, DEPARTMENTS AND CHAPTERS, II CHAPTER, Section 4. Officers

Each Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Associa-tion, Inc. shall elect a Chapter President, Vice Presi-dent(s), who shall be Regular Members of the KWVA, and elect or appoint a Secretary, Treasurer and if so required, Directors, to form at least a Council/Board of ten (10), according to approved Chapter Bylaws. presentation of their own experi-ences to the students. Tell America Team members that day included Gloria and Jimmy Corbet, Joel Briggs, Don Lynch, with Vi Pfahler as Tell America photographer.

We had planned to do a similar program at Mount Dora High School on March 24-25 , but when we went we were surprised to find that the school was on Spring Break. We will try to reschedule it as soon as possible.

And we are trying to schedule a program at Eustis High School on May 9.

You may recall we reported on pro-grams on Oct. 13 of last year at St. Paul's School, Leesburg. Each stu-dent created a digital poster show-

ing what they learned about the Korean War as shown by their digital poster. We are planning to go back and make an award to 6th, 7th and 8th grade winning posters.

St. Paul’s school has been one of our strongest schools in ensuring students learn about the Korean War.

And then in Jan of this year we went back to Holy Trinity School in Fruitland Park.

Trinity is where we did our very first Tell America pro-gram in 2009. We

have learned that Holy Trinity had their students write es-says, and we are planning to go there to make awards to Elizabeth Stone, English Class and Matthew Owens, Language Arts.

We thank all of our mem-bers who serve on the Tell America Team!

Why do we have a Tell America program?

Very simply, to tell Americans about the Ko-rean War — what led to the North invading South Korea, the first contact

with the enemy at Osan, delaying battles at Taejon, the Kum River to the Pusan Perimeter, the Inchon invasion, the trip north to near the Yalu River, the entry of the Chi-

nese and their overwhelming num-bers surrounded the U.N. killing countless numbers at places like Chosan, Unson, and along the west coast highway, to back below Seoul, and then to the two year time called “the Stalemate.”

We speak to the huge contrast be-tween a communist North Korea and a free Republic of South Korea today. Each team member then

  • Iversen says of the event: “As Fund Raising Chairman for Chapter 169, I was looking for a new fund raiser that would be different and not too physical for our Chapter members who are getting older. I suggested to the Board a Walk-a-thon around a track (minimum of one trip around the track) at a High School where we do the ‘Tell America Pro-gram.’ We would ask the three ROTC's in the local area that we service to help getting people to walk. The walkers were asked to get people to sponsor them and con-tact businesses to be Corporate Sponsors.”

The Walk-a-thon was held at Leesburg High School on Sat. Mar. 15. We made them the sponsor/host to eliminate the cost of using the school property.

Chapter members were asked to contact the clubs in the retirement communities in our area and the military organizations asking them to walk and/or donate to the pro-ject.

The Walk-a-thon’s proceeds were split equally, after its expenses were extracted, between three or-ganizations:

The Villages Honor Flights, Save our Soldiers, and Chapter 169.

Save Our Soldiers, Inc. supplies motorized wheel chairs (42 last year) to disabled veterans, delivers food, water, blankets and medical supplies to homeless veterans, etc.

Despite two other competing events on the same day, the event went well.

Walk-a-thon totals at this time (A final report will be given next month. when all monies come in).

    INCOME $11,227.92, minus EX-PENSES $484.14 gives us a TOTAL $10,743.78.

Amount to each Veteran's group $3,581.26.

Leesburg High School did a fantas-tic job and the whole school was behind the project. The ROTC held weekly car washes and the cadets went to churches, businesses, Fire Stations and asked for donations. They took in $5,801.92.

The other schools turned in much lesser amounts: Eustis ROTC $750, and Mount Dora ROTC $639.

We set up a competition between the ROTC's and offered a cash prize

    to the winner.

No amount was set up, I think it should be $500.00 or 10% of the money they raised which would be $580.03. This comes out of our share of the funds. This will be a Board decision.

A few of our members donated money, but sadly, less than 10 members showed up.

The Villages Daily Sun donated a quarter-page page AD at no charge, and the Daily Commercial gave us a one-eight page at a discount of 80 percent. There were no press re-leases sent to media, hence none of the papers sent reporters—a lost opportunity.

When asked if he was going to pro-duce a 2015 Walk-a-thon, Iversen said: “… not next year at least, maybe in three years.”

Art, the chapter takes off its collec-tive hats in appreciation to your y0eman effort!

And thank you to everyone who contributed and/or helped.

    TThiel & Art Iversen.

er or Director(s) may be filled with either Active Regular or Active As-sociate Members although ap-pointed Associate Members may not vote on Chapter matters that come before the Council/Board. The result of said election shall be transmitted forthwith to the KWVA Secretary. The President shall appoint all other Officers and Committees with approval of the Council/Board. Chapter Bylaws will determine if those Regular Members who are appointed to the Council/Board will have the right to vote in Chapter matters. After their election to the office in the Chapter, the President and Vice President(s) titles can be changed to Commander and Vice Com-mander(s), with the approval of the Chapter membership, during their time in office. No person may hold two (2) elective offices, except for Secretary and Treasurer, which may be held by one (1) per-son if elected or appointed.

Two important points to keep in mind are:

ARTICLE 1. MEMBERSHIP, Sec-tion 1. Qualifications of Members, reads, Only Regular Members as

defined in A. below have a vote in Association, Department or Chap-ter matters.

Accordingly, while Associate mem-bers may hold the position of Di-rector, Secretary or Treasurer, they do not have a vote in Chapter mat-ters.

Although approved by the Board of Directors on March 11th, the above Bylaw change must receive final approval by the KWVA Mem-bership at our next meeting to be held in October of this year in Rochester, Minnesota be-fore the change becomes ef-fective.”

/S/ Lewis M. Ewing, Chairman, KWVA Bylaws Committee. [End Ewing Quote]

    Commentary by TJThiel

We were successful in: 1. getting DoF to accept and sponsor our re-quest, and 2. getting positive action from the Association BoD. I don’t know if we should be lobbying members to vote for it at the Annu-al Meeting.

I have received an email objecting to the phrase “… although appoint-ed Associate Members may not vote on Chapter matters…”

I totally agree with this Member. Active Associate Members who serve as an officer or member of the Chapter BoD should be permit-ted to vote on matters that affect that chapter, and especially on matters that affect them. For exam-ple, on a matter dealing with com-puter records over which Regular Members have no knowledge! But that will need to be fought later.

In doing this I learned one must: 1. thoroughly research the rules (bylaws and procedures manuals) in place, 2. properly format your request for the change, 3. provide all the necessary paperwork so that a signature is all that is required, 4. be prepared to adequately defend your case, and 5. DO IT. After all the Association consists of mem-bers just like ourselves.

The other item we have before the Association is our Chapter lapel pin. President Wally approached Association President Kinnard with a proposal that the Association adopt our pin as a Nationwide KWVA lapel pin and share the profits between the Association and our Chapter. We do not know if this was discussed at the Associa-tion BoD Meeting. TJThiel

    tells of their personal ex-periences.

Note that we want Korean Service Veterans as mem-bers of the Tell America team!

This program has been hugely popular with stu-dents at all levels.

Why do we give the schools and some students small donations?

Because they need re-sources for one thing. We are convinced that they

appreciate receiving our donations and make spe-cial efforts to thank us.

And secondly, because we need to make charitable contributions. We are a 501c17 charitable organi-zation which needs to do charitable work per our charter.

    We are NOT the Charity!

We budgeted $2300 for this general area, and an-other $1,500 for general charities this year.

    From Your Historian

Y ou may recall that I wrote a history of Chapter 169, and that President Wally asked me to update it when he took office in 2012. This history was compiled from all documents I could find in-cluding all Chapter items in Gray-beards, all Chapter newsletters I could find, from materials compiled by Carol Becker and Joe Madeline, and from photos that Carol, Joan Klawunn, Vi Pfahler, and others including myself provided.

In that process, Carol and I coordi-nated in organizing all her photos with each group of pictures being assigned the date they were taken and a few words on what event oc-curred on that date. They were then combined with the Chapters.

My purpose in writing this is to let all members know that such a col-lection exists. It exists on my com-puter, and also has been offloaded to DVD’s which have been given to President Wally and to the Secre-tary for filing.

The history exists on our web site in three portions, up to 2010, 2011, and 2012. They are in text format which means they look very well on the web site, I think. I may organize these and bring them together, but there are compelling reasons to not do so.

I’ve thought about bringing these up to date and quickly realize I do not know all of what has happened in recent years. I’m not sure there are minutes and even if so, do they contain all historical items?

For example do we have recorded anywhere who all appeared on Sa-lute? Do I have all photos ever rec-orded for the past couple of years? I don’t think so. Is the Scuttlebutt receiving all items of an historic nature? I don’t think so.

So, my purpose here with this short article was to let you know that:

We have a chapter History, and that it is online at www.cid169.kwva.org . Find the link “History” at bottom half of Home page.

We have an historical Chapter file of photographs consisting of about 11 GB of data, 7,802 files, most of which are photographs, and some 299 sub-folders, most of which are identified by the date they were taken and the general activity on that date. Copies of all these have been given to the Chapter in DVD format for preservation.

The historian needs to have copies of ALL new photos taken that may have historic value; he does not believe that these are now being provided (Carol and Vi excluded).

The historian needs to have, indeed the Chapter must main-tain, a file of all minutes of all Board and Member meetings. The Historian’s file is incom-plete; he questions whether such file is being maintained.

I just wanted to let you know.

March 26, 2014 Member Meeting Minutes (edited)

G uest, Robert Ricksecker said he enjoyed our meeting, filled out an application, but is waiting to determine if he wants to join.

After a long absence due to health, Art Boucher attended our meeting.

Ted Jansen acted as Chaplain be-cause Jack Reynolds is ill with lung cancer. Dick Zettlemoyer is recover-ing from a complicated heart pace-maker surgery and infection. Doreen Zettlemoyer has spent all waking time to help Dick in his rehabilita-tion. Bill Shumaker is on the mend and plans to be involved with the purchase of supplies and cooking for our forthcoming picnic.

Guest speakers, Robert Wood and Ed Lubar Whitlock from “Veterans Helping Veterans” gave a rousing presentation. So much so, a collec-tion plate was passed among mem-bers with about $125.00 donated. Robert Wood stated that 18 percent of donations are taken out for “VHV” operations. They collect old appli-ances, furniture, and any items of value. They repair some broken items, but offer all to the Veterans. They are sold if Veterans don’t want them.

We have had 120 “Korea Reborn” books on hand, most of which have now been passed out. Many are go-ing into libraries. We particularly would like School libraries to have a copy. Anyone who would like a copy for the School of their choice, please contact Joel Briggs. He is the one who drove all the miles to St. Augus-

tine to pick up 100 copies and still has some left.

Joel Briggs has been handling the 61st Armistice Celebration set up for Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park, which will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 26. The Leesburg Ar-mory is available if we have foul weather. We have asked Don Van Beck to help us with newspaper con-tacts to send articles.

Tom Thiel reported that the KWVA Board of Directors approved the change in bylaws to allow Associate Members be appointed to Secretary and Treasurer. They will not be al-lowed to vote in meetings. However, The KWVA Membership must vote approval at their next meeting in October of this year held in Roches-ter, Minnesota.

Further, Tom is working on a web page using words, phrases and the like, to attract younger Korea De-fense Veterans to visit the site.

Karen Whitehurst was unable to at-tend the meeting. She is still working with Tom on the Scuttlebutt as the software involved is complicated.

The DOF Spring Convention (Council and Member Meeting) will be on May 24/25 at the Hilton Or-lando/Altamonte Springs Hotel. Ka-ren Whitehurst has forwarded reser-vation forms via e-mail to all mem-bers. Please send your reservations to Gloria Corbet as she is coordinat-ing the reservations and forwarding our Chapter check. The Chapter is paying for Board Member registra-

tion and lunch on Saturday and Wally’s overnight stay as he must attend Friday night’s Council meet-ing as Chapter President.

Gloria Corbet gave the Treasurer’s report which will be listed in the Scuttlebutt.

Art Iversen reported that $1364 was collected at the March 8 Fund Drive at The Villages Publix store. Further Fund Drives are scheduled for April 5th at Sam’s Club, in May at Palm Beach Plaza, and three more in June.

The March 15 Walkathon was a SUC-CESS! Altogether to date, $11,155 was collected with more to come. We will subtract $484 for our expenses, When we take the Chapter‘s 1/3 (SOS and Honor Flight take the oth-er 2/3), we will have obtained better than $3700. Leesburg ROTC mem-bers brought in over $5800.

We will donate 10 percent of that back to Leesburg. We have invited 10 members of the ROTC to attend our picnic as well a one member each from SOS & Honor Flight.

See upcoming Scuttlebutt for Tell America Activities. April 11 will be held At Leesburg.

Also, see Scuttlebutt for Color Guard Activity.

Forms for the May 25 Bushnell Cem-etery “FLAGS FOR FALLEN VETER-ANS” placement beginning at 9:00 AM have been sent to all members by Karen Whitehurst. This will be a

very memorable event. All flags are supplied by the Flags for Fallen Vets group and picked up by them. Our Chapter members must meet prior to 9:00 as they will act as a group in placing the flags.

Don Lynch’s “sandwich board” sign picture was in “The Leader” news-paper. While he was wearing it, six veterans came up to Don. They were interested in visiting our Chapter meeting, but Wednesday golf gets in the way. Don hopes that we will see one or two of them in the future.

Carol Becker asked people to pick up their pictures in the back of the room. She has been very gracious in covering almost all of our events and her photographs are really good.

Some members have reported they have not gotten a Scuttlebutt by mail. Please let Karen know if you have not and we will make sure you do, All but about 15 of our members receive by email.

Motion was made by Ted Jansen and passed to donate $100 to the

    Salvation Army.

Tom Thiel moved with second by Al Schuetz that Chapter make a one-time donation of $500.00 to “Vets Helping Vets.” Gloria Corbet then offered an amendment to the mo-tion to instead make monthly dona-tions to VHV of $50 until formal action made to stop said payments. Amendment was seconded (by whom ?). Amendment passed. Mo-tion as amended passed.

A question was then raised as to how we decide how much and when contributions are to be given to whom. It seems as if it is without any formal plan. A point well taken and will be discussed in our next Board meeting.

(Note: Our 2014 Budget was passed by the BoD at our February meet-ing; it projected amounts on all in-come, donations and expenses based on what we had reported for each category for the previous three years. It does not, however, address specifically who would be the recipi-ents. This has generally been left to the discretion of members involved with the activity. That is why we stated late last fall that there was

insufficient monies budgeted for a $300 donation. This did not mean, however, that we did not have the monies. ED)

Picnic is all set for Thursday, April 24, beginning 3:00 PM at Hickory Point Park, south of Tavares near Howey-in the Hills. Address is 21341 State Road 19 (this is the of-fice address, Hickory Point is sever-al miles further south). Please bring a covered dish per family. Ham-burgers, hot dogs , buns, condi-ments and soft drinks will be sup-plied.

We had no tickets for 50/50 so we used folded hand written paper slips instead. Pot was $34 and Dick Phfahler won $17.

Bop Peters will make sure Leesburg ROTC members will be given pub-licity on LakeFrontTV.

Thanks to Char and Jack Corscad-den for supplying sandwiches.

    Meeting adjourned approx. 4:00 PM.
