SC.8.E.5.9 Explain the impact of objects in space on each other including:

    1. The Sun on the Earth including seasons and gravitational attraction

    2. The Moon on the Earth, including phases, tides, and eclipses, and the relative position of each body.

    Essential Question:

determine our seasons and moon phases?

  • BELLRINGER

The average temperature for the month of June is 20.1 degrees Celsius (°C) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In December, the average temperature in Minneapolis is -7.8 degrees Celsius (°C). Why is it colder in Minneapolis during December?

    a) Earth is farther from the Sun in December.

    b) Earth revolves at a slower rate in December.

    c) The Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun in December.

    d) The Northern Hemisphere has a shorter period of rotation in December.

  • I DO GUIDED NOTES

  • DAYS, NIGHTS, YEARS

    • The Earth’s rotation causes day and night to occur.

    • The Earth rotates once every 24 hours.

    • The Earth’s REVOLUTION around the Sun is one year.

    • Each year is 365 days.

  • THE TILT OF EARTH’S AXIS

    • The Earth’s axis is tilted by 23.5°

    • The Earth’s surface is also curved.

    • These two factors

    contribute to Earth’s

    seasons.

  • THINK-PAIR-SHARE:1.Where is the North pole during our summer?

2.Where is the North pole during our winter?

  • UNEVEN HEATING

    • The Earth’s tilt causes some different latitudes to get different amounts of heat.

    • Hemispheres pointed towards the Sun experience summer.

    • Hemispheres pointed away from the Sun experience winter.
