Welcome!

"How great is the Love the Father has lavished on us!" (1 John 3:1).

We are thankful that you are joining in the worship of the people of God this day. Ushers at the

door are glad to assist you at any time.

▪ Please check that cell phones are silenced.

▪ Restrooms are located down either hallway to the right.

▪ Prayer requests may be written on the white cards in the pew rack and given to an usher

before worship begins, or as you leave.

▪ A nursery is available to parents as needed, down the first hallway to the right.

▪ Activity bags to help keep young children occupied during the message are provided in the

back right corner of the sanctuary.

▪ Please tell us a bit about yourself on the Record of Friendship during the collection of the

offering.

About the Offering

An offering is gathered today during the worship service. Here the people of God bring their

tithes and sacrificial offerings as an expression of their discipleship, and for the continuation of

Jesus’ mission work, both in this community and to the ends of the earth. Guests are not expected

to bring financial gifts, but are welcome to join the congregation in offering their prayers and

praises.

About Holy Communion

Today we celebrate Holy Communion. In this, we remember that the divine is united with the

created as one in the person of Jesus.

This altar is the Lord’s table. Here all are welcome who acknowledge their need for a Savior, and

look to Jesus. We believe what he simply says about the bread – “This is my body, given for you.” –

and about the wine – “This is my blood, shed for you.” Thus, the Lord Jesus is truly present for his

redeemed people in this holy meal. In this we retain the divine mystery in the midst of his ordinary

creation. From the many seeds of wheat come one loaf. From the many grapes are pressed one cup.

His many diverse people constitute one body and community of faith.

Young children are welcome to this altar to receive a blessing, as are those who have not been

instructed in the Christian faith. Please indicate your desire for a blessing by crossing your arms

over your chest or by simply asking for a blessing.

The individual communion cups in the center of the tray have white grape juice for those

who desire it. Gluten-free wafers are available at distribution upon request.

We are imperfect people and we live in an imperfect world. We are all in this together. So when we believe or act wrongly towards someone, or when we feel that another has wronged us, we

commit ourselves to the humble teaching and forgiving pattern of Jesus in Matthew 18.

The Second Sunday after the Epiphany

+ GATHERING + Prayer As We Begin — Please stand.

C Heavenly Father, as we come before you this morning in Jesus’ name, we pray all that

we say and do in our worship will give you glory. Help us, Lord, to focus our

thoughts on you, so your Word will find fertile ground in our minds and hearts. May

the worship service today accomplish in us the purpose you desire. Amen.

The Invocation, Confession, and Absolution P In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

P Beloved in the Lord! If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in

us.

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and

cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s word and for self-examination. Then the confession.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have

sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what

we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not

loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal

punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,

renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to

the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

The minister pronounces the Absolution.

P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God

forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become

the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who has begun this

good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

C Amen.

Peace and Collect Prayer

L The LORD be with you.

C And also with you.

L We pray together...

C Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth,

mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our

days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Please be seated.

+ WORD +

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 62:1-5 L The Old Testament Reading for the Second Sunday after the Epiphany is from Isaiah, chapter 62. God rejoices

over all his people. He who delights in you will join himself to you. 1For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her

righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2The nations

shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new

name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of

the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4You shall no more be termed

Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My

Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be

married. 5For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as

the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

L This is the Word of the LORD.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

L The Epistle is from First Corinthians, chapter 12. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that

when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says

“Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of service, but the

same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers

them all in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common

good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the

utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit,

to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to

another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various

kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are empowered by

one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

L This is the Word of the LORD.

C Thanks be to God.

Alleluia Verse — Please stand. LSB 173

Holy Gospel John 2:1-11

L The Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the 2nd chapter.

1On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3When the wine ran out, the

mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what

does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the

servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding

twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled

them up to the brim. 8And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master

of the feast.” So they took it. 9When the master of the feast tasted the water now become

wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water

knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “Everyone serves

the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have

kept the good wine until now.” 11This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and

manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

L This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Nicene Creed P The holy Church throughout the world confesses this faith:

C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds,

God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,

begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated.

Jesus manifests His glory at the wedding feast at

Cana, changing ordinary water into exquisite

wine. The Church treasures this divine action of

Christ, remembering, believing, and receiving

forgiveness in Jesus’ divine blood, in, under, and

with ordinary wine. God in Christ binds Himself

to His people, from desolate forsaken Israel to

the Holy Church of today. She is the Bride, and

He the Bridegroom, whose resolute faithfulness

seals the marriage covenant with us forever.

Gohlke's legacy of Gospel hospitality.

The Avenues Bible Study meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month at 10:30am

in the Fellowship Hall. For more information, please contact Pat Davenport at

769.223.2889. They are currently studying of “The Screwtape Letters”. The next meeting

will be held on Thursday, January 24th.

The Screwtape Letters, a Christian novel written by C. S. Lewis was first published in 1942. The

plot and characters are used to address issues of temptation and resistance to it. Using a

satirical style, Lewis used the form of a series of letters written by a senior demon, Screwtape,

who holds an administrative post in the Lowerarchy of Hell and acts as a mentor to his nephew,

Wormwood, a Junior Tempter. The uncle’s mentorship pertains to the nephew’s responsibility

for securing the damnation of a British man known as “the Patient.” When Wormwood is

anxious to tempt his patient into extravagant and deplorable sins, Screwtape reminds him that

“…the safest road to hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden

turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” Lewis uses wit and humor to expose the

subtle pitfalls of everyday sin and temptation. This book is an entertaining, enlightening, and

helpful portrayal of human life from the perspective of the enemy.

Faith and Finances at

Saint John Hattiesburg

ABOUT the Faith and Finances Emphasis at Saint John Hattiesburg – We want to find meaningful

ways to help people with their value-based financial decisions. We’re partnering with Thrivent Financial

professionals Terry King and Patti Young in 2019 to host a series of workshops and other similar

opportunities for you, your family and friends, and your neighbors. The presentations are “product-

free” (They’re not selling anything.) and provide strong opportunities for improving your life now and

in the future. We’d love your help increasing the positive impact of these events by your own

participation and by your courageous inviting of others. Please RSVP via the church Events webpage

for each workshop you plan to attend.

This next step workshop will plan out how we can respond to the

spiritual gifts and passions God has given us and do good things in

our community. We're planning out activities for 2019 and putting

together Thrivent Action Teams to make them work, building on

what we learned at the first workshop, January 13th. We'd like help from those who see a need and

those who have gifts in organizing.

We ask these two things so that we can best prepare: (1) If you are a Thrivent Financial member,

please identify yourself to the church office. (2) If you're planning on coming Sunday, January 27th,

please RSVP by 5pm Friday (1/25) through the SignUpGenius link on the 'Events' tab of the church web

page. If you don't have internet access, please call the church office. This helps us prepare the proper

amount of food. Lunch is provided for those who RSVP: Topher's chicken sandwiches. Thanks!

Making a Difference: Sharing Time, Talent, & Treasure helps

participants identify their values so that they can then discover

meaningful ways to share their time, talents, and treasures. Explore

how to make the most of your resources and create your own

generosity plan. Refreshments provided. Facilitated by Terry King and Patti Young. RSVP deadline

February 14th.
