THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY: JANUARY 20, 2019

The Clergy’s

Corner

I hate it when I have to tell you a story as if the story of the Bible is not enough to stand by itself and stir your attention, but a good joke is always a good joke and maybe if I make you laugh you won’t take it as personal when I get to the serious business.

There was a time when a priest, who had the bad habit of drinking, put a case of Poland Spring wa-ter in the trunk of his car and was driving from

Connecticut to Poughkeepsie. Smart priest, he put red wine in those water bottles, hoping that he would make this trip with enough “fuel” to get there. When his driving became erratic, a police officer who happened to be observing the car swerving left and right, put his siren on, followed him, and finally stopped him. When he asked the priest to lower his window and hand over his driver’s license and reg-istration, the police officer could smell the alcohol on him but also realized he was a man of God. So, he asked him to step out of the ve-hicle and open the trunk of his car for a routine check. The priest fol-lowed the orders of the officer and popped the trunk. The police of-ficer looked in the trunk, found the case of water, and went to the priest, asking him, “Do you know that it is illegal to be travelling with open wine bottles in the trunk of your car?” The priest looked totally surprised. “What are you talking about?”, he replied. So, the police officer took one bottle, unscrewed the cap which was not locked and proceeded to show the priest that it was wine and not water, hoping that the priest would admit that he was drunk and violating the law. But the priest did not; instead, with the same surprised look, he said to the police office: “My son, he did it again!”

Jesus performed his first miracle at the wedding in Cana by changing water into wine.

What, according to you, is hidden behind this miracle?

You won’t know, if you don’t come to church Sunday or if you are not following the livestream on Facebook. There is always something to celebrate; when we give Jesus a piece of crap, he can turn it into something unexpected. That’s the power of love.

THE COLLECT

The Second Sunday after the Epiphany: pg. 215

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING

Isaiah 62:1-5

God sends his Son for the love of his people, to show by his care and tenderness the precious affection he holds for humanity, as a groom and bride long for and love one another. A reading (lesson) from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah: For Zion's sake I will not keep silent,

and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn,

and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication,

and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name

that the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,

and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken,

and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,

and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you,

and your land shall be married.

THE RESPONSE

Psalm 36:5-10 Dixit injustus BCP Pg. 632

5 Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, *

and your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,

your justice like the great deep; * you save both man and beast, O LORD.

7 How priceless is your love, O God! *

your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast upon the abundance of your house; *

you give them drink from the river of your delights. 9 For with you is the well of life, *

and in your light we see light. 10 Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you, *

and your favor to those who are true of heart.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

In discerning God’s work in the church, we are to become familiar with his voice and his way of being, that as his hands work out various missions, we may recognize his ministry among us. A reading (lesson) from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians:

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people All Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL

John 2:1-11

Jesus cannot keep his silence any longer, his first miracle makes plenty.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John All Glory to you, Lord Christ

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward." So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. The Gospel of the Lord

THE SERMON: “Yes, He Did It Again! /Do You Feel Crappy Enough For Jesus?” by The Rev. Nathanael Saint-Pierre

I hate it when I have to tell you a story as if the story of the Bible is not enough to stand by itself and stir your attention, but a good joke is always a good joke and maybe if I make you laugh you won’t take it as personal when I get to the serious business.

There was a time when a priest, who had the bad habit of drinking, put a case of Poland Spring water in the trunk of his car and was driving from Connecticut to Poughkeepsie. Smart priest, he put red wine in those water bottles, hoping that he would make this trip with enough “fuel” to get there. When his driving became erratic, a police officer who happened to be observing the car swerving left and right, put his siren on, followed him, and finally stopped him. When he asked the priest to lower his window and hand over his driver’s license and registration, the police officer could smell the alcohol on him but also realized he was a man of God. So, he asked him to step out of the vehicle and open the trunk of his car for a routine check. The priest followed the orders of the officer and popped the trunk. The police officer looked in the trunk, found the case of water, and went to the priest, asking him, “Do you know that it is illegal to be travelling with open wine bottles in the trunk of your car?” The priest looked totally surprised.

Situation: Jesus performed his first miracle at the wedding in Cana by changing water into wine.

Complication: What, according to you, is hidden behind this miracle?

THE NICENE CREED BCP p. 358 We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.

For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. who with the Father and the Son

is worshiped and glorified. who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: (Unknown Source) The Leader and People pray responsively

Let us pray for peace in the Church and in the world.

With all our heart and all our mind, we pray to you, O Lord:

Make us instruments of your peace.

For the peace of the world; that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples, we pray to you, O Lord:

Where there is hatred, let us sow love.

For our enemies and those who wish us harm, and for all whom we have injured or offended, we pray to you, O Lord:

Where there is injury, let us sow pardon.

For all who fear God and believe in you, Lord Christ, that our divisions may cease, and all may be one as you and the Father are one, we pray to you, O Lord:

Where there is discord, let us sow union.

For those who do not yet believe, for those who have lost their faith, and those in despair and darkness that they may receive the light of the faith, we pray to you, O Lord:

Where there is doubt, let us sow faith.

For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, especially those who have asked of our prayers, for all who suffer and those who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected, we pray to you, O Lord:

Where there is despair, let us sow hope. For the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church especially in the diocese of New York for this church of St Augustine’s, and all who are gathered to pray, all over the universe, that in faithful witness we may preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, we pray to you, O Lord:

Where there is darkness, let us sow light.

For all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, for all the departed and those who are grieving, may they find comfort and be at peace, we pray to you, O Lord:

Where there is sadness, let us sow joy.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others

(people may offer their prayers, either silently or aloud).

Silence

Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Confession and Absolution

The Deacon or Celebrant says

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept.

Minister and People God of all mercy: We confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world, you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, And the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

The Priest, stands and says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING: EUCHARISTIC PRAYER A

The people remain standing. The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and sings or says

Celebrant God be with you. All And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children.

Then the Celebrant continues

Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of Angels with prophets, apostles, and martyrs and with all the faithful of every time and place who forever sing to the glory of your Name:

Sanctus et Benedictus BCP pg. 362

Celebrant and People

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The people stand or kneel.

Then the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for ALL. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for ALL for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering your gracious acts in Jesus Christ, we take from your creation This bread and this wine and joyfully celebrate his dying and rising, as we wait the day of his coming. With thanksgiving, we offer our very selves to you to be a living and holy sacrifice, dedicated to your service.

Great is the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

And forgive us our debts,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation

The Gifts of God for the People of God; Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people. The Bread and the Cup are given to the communicants with these words:

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.] The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.]

When necessary, the Celebrant consecrates additional bread and wine, using the form on page 408. During the ministration of Communion, hymns, psalms, or anthems may be sung.

COMMUNION HYMN: BRIGHTEST AND BEST (5) #117 (HYMNAL)

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People

God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation. You have united us with Christ and one another, and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth.

Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit; that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.
