SENTENCE

A sentence is a group of words that

expresses a complete thought.

SENTENCE FRAGMENT

A group of words that expresses an

incomplete thought is called a sentence

fragment.

COMPLETE SUBJECT

A complete subject includes all words

used to identify the person, place,

thing, or idea that the sentence is

about.

SIMPLE SUBJECT

A simple subject is the main word in

the complete subject.

COMPLETE PREDICATE

A complete predicate includes all the

words that tell what the subject is

doing or tell something about the

subject.

A simple predicate, also called a verb,

is the main word or phrase in the

complete predicate.

ACTION VERBS

Verbs that tell what a subject is doing

are action verbs.

A verb phrase is often interrupted by

one or more words.

Ex.

We should never have crossed

that desert.

The word not and its contraction n’t are

never part of a verb phrase.

Ex.

That camel did not stop at the oasis.

That camel didn’t stop at the oasis.
