RECENT MISSION TRIPS>>>Lillian Johansen (Tar Wallet) writes:Our trip went really well. We were able to witness to 20 girls at an orphanage by using a women’s health seminar for girls beyond puberty. The class teaches about their bodies and their monthly cycles. There is much superstition and ignorance which feeds into the paganistic religions that are prevalent there. We were able to tell them about the One Creator GOD and His design for our bodies as well as His plan of salvation for fallen man. For the younger girls, we used basic first aid instruction as a platform for the Gospel.

We also were able to go to another orphanage and teach over 80 boys and girls using the same classes. At both places, the staff, who are all Buddhists, listened to the message as well. We also presented each child with his or her own plastic shoe box containing toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, crème rinse, antibiotic ointment, bandaids, manicure kits, candy, and a small stuffed animal monogrammed with Jesus Loves You. The girls who are at puberty or beyond, also received a personal hygiene kit that contains reusable pads, pins, a bar of body soap, and a small pouch of detergent to clean the used pads.

Most of the people are too poor to purchase disposable feminine products, and simply stay at home for a week while using loose rags. They also believe it is bad to bathe during a woman’s period. The kits they received contain a pouch with clean pads, and a waterproof section for a used pad while away from home.

We also were able to provide a pampered weekend for the wives of the 10 pastors who are spreading the Gospel in this area. Each pastor and his wife are responsible for 10 other pastors that are being trained, who will in turn train 10 more. God is moving in a mighty way! The women were presented with Biblical teaching and a gift bag every day. They were blown away by this. Since we have left, one of the wives has used the pad project to witness to some women who didn’t know Jesus and was very well received. God has softened the hearts of the people and the field is white unto harvest. It is so exciting to see what He is doing and to be allowed the privilege of joining Him!

Michael Khol (Mulberry Grove) writes:I went on a medical mission trip to El Salvador March 6 – March 13. There were 32 students and doctors from various parts of the U.S. who went on the trip. The group is primarily from the Christian Medical and Dental Association at VCU in Richmond. We went in partnership with My Fathers House International, which is an orphanage in San Salvador. This group is trying to make systemic change in the lives of the boys and girls at their home and break the cycle that has ensnared these families for generations.

While on the trip we carried supplies to various homes, held medical and dental clinics for the families and neighborhood around the orphanage, and played with the children in the home.

A special thank you to the churches that contributed in prayer, financially, and particularly with hand-made dresses (They were a huge hit!). God has been good to allow me to partner in missions and I am thrilled to see the support for that here in our Association. Thank you all so much and may God bless and repay your support.

Gwynn Tyler (Mulberry Grove) writes:In mid-February I was part of a mission team, along with 4 other men from Southside Virginia, that went to Siguatepeque Honduras. Our team worked with Hector Villatores, pastor of Iglesia Bautista Hermón. Our mission was to help paint classrooms in a local school and to repair a long set of concrete steps to make them safer for the students. Many Honduran schools are named after different countries, Ironically, our school was named Estados Unidos de America or United States of America School.

During the school day we were able to interact with numerous children mostly in the primary and elementary grade levels. Thanks to Vic Moss, the local Gideon group supplied me with 50 Spanish New Testaments that I was able to pass out to children in a first grade classroom. They were very appreciative and proud to be able to have a New Testament of their very own.

It was fascinating to watch the children moving their desks and other furniture to the classrooms once we finished the painting. They were excited to see the work we had done to brighten up the rooms. This was a school that was built in the late 1960’s that needed a little touch up work.

Part of the funds and gifts from other churches and individuals was used to provide materials and labor for installing drop ceilings in three classrooms. Thanks to each of you for your prayers and financial contributions to my trip. It was a very productive and enjoyable opportunity. It was especially nice to see old friends and to offer encouragement to fellow Christians in another par t of the world.

Hope Aglow Prison MinistryJRBA churches were able to provide 215 neckties and one new white shirt for the Hope Aglow Prison Ministry. The ministry sees that each man released from prison is given a new white shirt and necktie and encourages them to wear it when applying for a job. Garry Sims, Executive Director, told about one young man who wore his shirt and tie to apply for a job. The owner of the business gave him the job without even reading the application he presented. When the young man asked why he had done that, the owner said, “You are the only person to have applied here for a job to show up in a shirt and tie so I know you will be a good employee”. Sometimes the smallest thing can make a BIG difference in a person’s life. Thank you to the following churches who contributed to this effort:

First Baptist Dillwyn (36 ties + 1new shirt)Mt. Zion (37 ties)Mulberry Grove (88 ties)Sharon (16 ties)Tar Wallet (38 ties)

Garry said that this really gives them a good supply for now so do not bring in any additional ties. Do remember, however, that he is still taking SS literature and inspirational magazines. They can be dropped off here at the JRBA office. (NO SECULAR MAGAZINES)

4CHURCH OUTREACH>>>Antioch’s Five Loaves & Two Fish Ministry Meal was on Saturday, March 26, and served over 135 meals and handed out approximately 84 food boxes. Daniel and Melissa Wagner headed up a drive to collect funds for bottled water to take to Flint, Michigan. They collected over $1,157.00. They left March 18 and ended up delivering 80,000 bottles of water. They worked with a church in Flint to see that the water was distributed. Antioch is now collecting seeds for the S.E.E.D. Ministry with Malcolm Warfield as overseer. Antioch will participate in Fluvanna Old Farm Day, May 7. They will be giving out free balloons and bottled water with the church logo. Books will also be given away. Pastor Dave and the Deacons will be available to pray with people, too. The Boomer Sunday School Class is still collecting items for military stationed in the Middle East. Their own Raymond Bunch is among the service men stationed there. Anyone can donate to this cause. If you or your church group would like to help, contact the church office at 434-286-6315.

Arvon’s Crocheting Ministry recently supplied 3 Prayer Shawls to the Prayer Ministry at Martha Jefferson Hospital and 3 large afghans to the V.A. Hospital in Richmond.

The Cedar Choir and others from the church family visited the Heritage Hall Nursing Home on \Wednesday, March 23, for a time of singing and fellowship with the residents.

Enon held a Bake Sale at Food Lion on Saturday, March 26. They started at 8 AM and were SOLD OUT by 11AM! Enon thanks all of you who donated baked goods, helped with the bake sale, or purchased items. They raised a total of $665 for Relay for Life.

Jones Chapel had a chili supper and movie night on March 5. Afterwards, everyone pitched in and made the fellowship hall ready for the JRBA concert! The concert was a great success, both spiritually for those who attended, and financially for the JRBA Stop Hunger Now Project. An offering of $854.97 was taken. Thanks to everyone who came and helped, and especially to Chris Lewis for the outstanding music.

Mt. Zion’s WMU sent a monetary donation to the Blue Envelope Project, Bland Ministry Center, to help with materials for construction projects for needy people.

Mulberry Grove had a busy month with several areas of emphasis. Contributions came in for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering (continuing in April) and for Stop Hunger Now. Individuals contributed items for the Bland Mission Trip (also continuing in April). Medications were donated for the medical mission trip taken by Pastor Michael Khol. Individuals continue to volunteer at the bi-monthly food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral, attend the weekly Hispanic bi-lingual Bible study, and participate with the church outreach ministry. In April, the nursing home ministry will also be collecting items for Heritage Hall.

Sharon contributed $300 to the Appomattox Baptist Association for tornado relief. They also contributed to the JRBA Stop Hunger Now Project and the Annie Armstrong Offering. Genie and Tommy Bradshaw continue volunteering with food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral and Rose of Sharon continues delivering food and visiting with those who are sick and shut in.

IN LOVING MEMORY>>>

Deepest sympathy is extended by Chestnut Grove to the family of Jack Simpson who passed away on March 22. He will be missed by his church family.

Jones Chapel extends their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Clyde Ownby, oldest member of the church. He passed away at the age of 96 and was married to his wife, Lavern , for 74 years. Pastor Tuttle and former pastor, Rev. Jim Lamb (from Mrytle Beach, SC.) officiated.

OTHER EVENTS>>>

Antioch held an Easter Egg Hunt for the children on Saturday afternoon, March 26. Angela Gurley was in charge.

The Easter Egg Hunt at Buckingham was held on Saturday, March 26, and was a big success with many children from the community. There were about 30 children plus the adults. The afternoon started with the reading of the Easter Story followed by a prayer for the children by the pastor. Then the children ran out to find all the eggs their baskets would hold. Some eggs had money and some had slips for the numerous prizes that had been donated. Each child got at least one prize. This was followed by a time of refreshments and lots of candy. The children made an Easter craft and got Easter tattoos. They had a big time doing different relays outside. Many thanks to all who came, all who helped, and all who donated to make the egg hunt such a success! On Sunday, March 27, in celebration of Easter, Buckingham held a Sunrise Service followed by a Fellowship breakfast prepared by the deacons.

Cedar’s Fellowship Class, under the leadership of Kathleen Llewellyn, presented the movie, War Room, for the church family on Saturday, March 12. Everyone seemed not only to have enjoyed the movie, but also to have been touched by it.

The Youth of Chestnut Grove held a “Senior Citizens Dinner” on Sunday, March 20. Twenty-one adults attended and were treated like royalty by the youth who did a great job of preparing and serving the food and drinks.

Enon had an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 26. There were over 100 children and adults in attendance. The Easter Bunny was on hand to pose with the children for pictures. A good time was had by all!

Goshen had a great Sunrise Service, wonderful breakfast cooked by the men, and their Easter Worship Service was well attended. All in all it was a wonderful Easter Day!

Mt. Zion celebrated the Easter season with the children of the church on Sunday, March 20. Rev. Don Campbell, assisted by Marilyn Snoddy and Lisa Jones, demonstrated the Resurrection Story by using Easter eggs filled with items pertaining to the Biblical story. Of course, the last egg was empty signifying Jesus’ empty tomb” . The children dispersed to the Sunday School area to play Easter-inspired games. Each child received an Easter treat. Special thanks to Doris Roberts, Tina Moss, and Brett Jones who assisted with the games.

Mulberry Grove had a busy Easter weekend. Activities included a Good Friday service (44 in attendance), a cookout and Easter egg hunt on Saturday(kids everywhere ), and a Sunrise Service(60 attendees), followed by breakfast on Easter Sunday. The highlight of the weekend was the Easter Worship service with 82 attending. Special music was presented by Carter Wood, Jennifer Ayers, and Cindy Jones, as well as a selection by the choir. It was a special weekend of fun,

Page 6: THE SERVANT LINK - James River Baptist Association€¦  · Web viewThe evening of March 19 at Sharon was one of warm fellowship, hot soup, and high-spirited bluegrass and Gospel

fellowship, and meaningful music and worship. HE IS RISEN….RISEN INDEED!

5 After worship service on March 20, an Easter Egg hunt was held for the children at Jones Chapel. Since it was rainy and cold, it had to be held downstairs in the classrooms which made the eggs easy to find. The children had also had fun guessing the number of jelly beans in jars, and winning door prizes. They all took home lots of candy. A pizza lunch was provided for everyone who attended.

On Palm Sunday, Pastor Tuttle led in a very moving service, where a rugged cross was carried into the church and placed at the altar so that members could write their sins on paper and post them on the nails, in remembrance of what Jesus did for us. Maundy Thursday service was held, and Pastor Tuttle and the Deacons served communion.

On Easter Sunday, Pastor Tuttle led the Sonrise service for the congregation and afterwards everyone enjoyed a huge breakfast together. Sunday School and Worship services were held with special music from the children, who sang “There Is Power in the Blood.”

Young and old alike enjoyed Sharon’s afternoon Easter Egg Hunt at the home of Brenda and Mike Farrish.

Tar Wallet had an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 26. Lunch was provided. Pastor Johansen participated in the Community Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday that was hosted by Payne Memorial Methodist Church. Breakfast was served.

JRBA LEARNS AND GROWS>>>

Arvon will have 10 girls and 3 adults attending the Shine weekend at Eagle Eyrie.

Goshen will have 5 going to the Mom & Me weekend at Eagle Eyrie in April. Looking forward to the experience are Sarah Wheeler, Emilie Wheeler, Jamie Steppe, Brittany Steppe, and Breanna Steppe. The Goshen church family will be hosting supply speakers during April:April 3 – Rev. Hugh Litchfield, April 10 – Rev. Dwight Mays, April 17 – Anthony Clore, and April 24 – Rev. Buddy Woodson.

Mt. Zion had a spiritual renewal this Lent season. They have grown closer to God, by replacing things that had been taking their time, and spending more time with God in prayer, meditation, and reading His Word. They had buckets for offerings during lent marked for Stop Hunger Now, Spreading God’s Gifts, and Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. They celebrated Palm Sunday by the children waving Palm branches and shouting Hosanna. They had Maundy Thursday with the Lord’s Supper and Tenebrae: The Service of Darkness. (Thanks are extended to former pastor, Dr. Adam Tyler, who filed the program service when he was with them.) They also had a Good Friday Service. Their Sunrise Service was outside where they remembered the events of Holy Week as they walked to the tomb by the way of the cross. Along the way, they saw the palm branches, 30 pieces of silver, Peter, Pilate, the cross, and the empty tomb! He Is Alive! Breakfast followed this moving journey, and during the Easter Worship Service members “flowered” the cross in celebration of Christ’s resurrection.

Sharon welcomed Rev. Michael Khol as he shared his vision and initiated conversation about opportunities for JRBA churches to work together on various initiatives. The conversation was fun, thought-provoking and inspirational, and Sharon is looking forward to exploring the possibilities. Thirteen men from Sharon were among 10,000 at the Ignite Men’s Impact Conference at Liberty University, Lynchburg, an annual event to help men align their everyday passions with God’s purpose. With celebrity speakers from the world of hunting, fishing, football, motorcycles, racing, and extreme spots, the men enjoyed two days of workshops and worship while learning more about the life of true adventure that God intends.

The Youth of Tar Wallet led the worship service on March 13. They had skits, testimonies, and special music. They did a wonderful job and the Tar Wallet family thanks them for this special service. The Youth also attended a Youth Retreat with Maysville Bapitst Church at Bear Creek Lake from March 18 – March 20.

JRBA Pastors’ Huddle

The Pastors’ Huddle was held on Wednesday, March 16, with 8 in attendance. We continue to meet to encourage one another and build each other up. The Bible says, As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Pastors, I hope that you can come to our next meeting that is scheduled for April 20th.

Meeting with JRBA Churches

I have been meeting weekly wit the various churches of the James River Baptist Association. It has been a huge blessing to me and from what I have seen, the different churches have also been blessed. I am reaching out to try to begin a conversation regarding the gifts and opportunities within the JRBA. I have been to or am scheduled to visit 9 of our 18 churches. I am hoping to visit more, but would like your help reaching the remaining half of the churches. If I have not made it to your church, please contact me to set up a time to come by and speak with your church. Thank you so much and may God bless you and your church.

Rev. Michael [email protected]

JRBA Tax & Compensation Seminar

Fifteen people participated in the Tax & Compensation Seminar at First Baptist Dillwyn on March 10. IN APPRECIATION>>>The evening of March 19 at Sharon was one of warm fellowship, hot soup, and high-spirited bluegrass and Gospel music by the Willow Branch Bluegrass Band, with special guest, Graham Donahue (guitar and vocals). Many arrived early to fellowship over a wide variety of soups, breads, and desserts; and folks came from near and far to enjoy the music. The congregation of Sharon extends heartfelt appreciation for the sustained support of friends and neighbors as it continues to grow the building fund for a new Fellowship Hall.

FROM OUR MODERATOR>>>

WOW is all I can say about what has been collected by our folks for Stoop Hunger Now! I saw a Lent Calendar from Stop Hunger Now, where a daily scripture and something about hunger was shared for each day. I don’t know how many of our people used this, but I know there were some who did. God is an awesome God, and we see how awesome when we unite in prayer. We have raised over $8,600 to help feed hungry people around the world!

Pentecost Sunday is on May 15 this year – this is the day our team will go to Bland County. There is no telling what God is planning to do! Keep them in your prayers.

God Bless,Marilyn Snoddy

8NOTE THAT I OMITTED THE FOLLOWING EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING SUMMARY IN THE FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER.

JRBA Executive Board SummaryJanuary 11, 2016

Moderator, Marilyn Snoddy, opened the meeting with some inspirational words on Joel 2:28-30: And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people, Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. (NIV) Locusts brought dark days for God’s people and they repented; then God poured out His Spirit on them. The prophet, Joel, said, “ the old men would dream dreams and the young would have visions”…what are your dreams? It is time to dream – God’s dreams! God may be talking to you through your dreams. Think of how God spoke to Joseph in a dream – showing him his destiny. Joseph had to go through a lot before he reached that destiny. God knows our destiny and will see us through all that we encounter along the way. He will not abandon us. God gives dreams to change the world. Let us dream and see what God is telling us. Marilyn closed the devotion with a prayer for God to give us dreams, to help us recognize them, and the strength to move forward to our destinies as individuals, churches, and as an association.

The meeting was called to order and Frank Breault, Clerk, had the roll call of churches. There were 20 in attendance from 10 member churches. The minutes of the October Executive Board meeting were presented and approved. The minutes of the JRBA Annual Fall Meeting were presented and approved. Tommy Joe Steger, Jr., Treasurer, gave the quarterly Treasurer’s Report. As of December 31, 2015, the JRBA Checking Account had a balance of $25,191.88. This balance includes the following designated monies: Additional Missions Fund - $378.00; Youth Encounter - $400.00; Local Missions - $570.04; Hispanic Ministry - $895.82; and Stop Hunger Now - $1,059.19. The Certificate of Deposit total is $4,107.97. Receipts for the quarter totaled $7,027.23. Disbursements totaled $5,429.76 (including BGAV More Than Nets - $400.00; BGAV Carolina Flooding - $400.00; and BGAV Syrian Refugee Crisis - $212.00. The Treasurer’s Report was approved.

Mrs. Betty Toney presented the Benevolence Fund report for the quarter. Two families were assisted with overdue electric bills and two families received donations after losing everything in home fires. Memorial gifts were sent for Rev. Earl Clore (Rev. Perry Clore’s father) and Mrs. Jackie Ragland (former JRBA Secretary). Disbursements totaled $450.00. Contributions totaled $1,200.00. The checking account balance (12/31/15) stood at $3,336.99. Rev. Perry Clore and Audrey Ragland thanked the group for the memorial gifts.

Marilyn then gave the Moderator’s Report. She welcomed Rev. Wayne Proffitt, Enon, to JRBA. She also announced that Jones Chapel has a new pastor, Rev. Richard Tuttle and that Rev. Jimmy Dunn is currently the Interim Pastor at Chestnut Grove. She announced the Tax & Compensation Seminar to be held on March 10, 2016, at First Baptist Dillwyn, and encouraged pastors, treasurers, and financial secretaries to participate Rev. Jimmy Dunn gave a report from the Missions Committee. He announced the updated total for Stop Hunger Now - $1,280.95. He encouraged everyone to continue to give to this worthy cause and reminded everyone to get donations in to the JRBA office by March 21.Hispanic Ministry: Jimmy thanked Buckingham for hosting the Christmas Fiesta and those who came and brought food. He also thanked Mulberry Grove for furnishing the gift bags for the Hispanics in attendance. He thanked Rev. Michael Khol for giving a message in Spanish. Michael updated us on the Hispanic Bible Study he leads, noting that it continues to meet and relationships continue to build. The families involved are now attending church on a regular basis as well. Jimmy noted that JRBA will be sending a team to the Bland Ministry Center in May and encouraged anyone wishing to participate to contact Phyllis right away. So far, nine have signed up and there is

room for 15. He noted the upcoming mission trips to India, Honduras, and El Salvador in which folks from our churches will be involved. He asked that we pray for them and the work they will be doing. A contribution will be made to each of the six individuals from member churches who will be participating. The Blue Ridge Food Ministry continues to give out food on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month . He thanked those who are volunteering and encouraged others to come out and help as well.

An individual shared his upcoming training and transfer to the mission field. He asked for prayer for his family, the packing process, moving, the long plane trip, and finances. He thanked everyone for their support of the IMB and the Lottie Moon Christmas offering.

Mrs. Betty Toney, WMU Director, reported that our churches gave over $11,0000 to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for which she commended them. She also commended the churches that provided funds to purchase shoes for the national team working with the “Y” family in South Asia. Enough funds were contributed to “put a new shoe on every foot”! Betty also noted that the Backpack Ministry continues to meet needs for 20 Buckingham students.

Under Old Business, Rev. Michael Khol reported that he has visited one church to relay information about JRBA and will be continuing to visit others in the near future. He asked that we pray for that informational ministry and that those churches who have not responded will do so.

Under New Business, Marilyn presented the 2016 Committee list. She encouraged the Chairs of each committee to schedule at least one meeting and to be sure to invite her. The Committee List was approved. Phyllis asked if JRBA plans to participate in Operation InAsMuch again this year. Rev. Perry Clore made a motion that JRBA again participate in OIAM. It was seconded and approved. A date will be set at the April Executive Board Meeting. Jimmy asked that we think about at least one major project in which folks from several churches can participate. Valeria Breault, OIAM Chair, asked that churches get a contact person’s name and contact information to her as soon as possible.

Marilyn drew everyone’s attention to the announcements in their packet. She added that Mt. Zion will host a Dinner & Movie night on February 13, showing War Room. She encouraged all to come out for this fellowship. She also announced the death of Rev. Charles Gibson, former Intentional Interim of Mt. Zion. Jimmy announced the death of Terry Wellbourne.

Jimmy asked that Rev. Wayne Proffitt lead the group in a prayer for the individual going on the mission field to adjourn the meeting. The group circled and held hands for this time of blessing.
