HOUSTON -- (April 13, 2006) - Decreasing oxidant levels byincreasingtheamountofanantioxidantenzymecanreversedecliningmemoryskillsandotherpathologicaleffectsofoldage,sayresearchersat Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston. The findings are reportedinthecurrentissueofJournalofNeuroscience. “This is one of the first studies showing that a genetically engineered mousethatoverexpressesanantioxidantenzymeactuallyperformsbetterwhentheyagewithrespecttomemory,”saidDr.EricKlann,principal investigator of the study and professor of molecularphysiologyatBCM. The study is one of the first to assess memory performanceamongagingmicegeneticallyengineeredwithanabundanceofanantioxidant enzyme called extracellular superoxide dismutase.Asthisgroupofmiceaged,theyperformedbetteronmemorytasksanddemonstratedcellularimprovementsinthehippocampus,apartofthebrainrequiredformemory. Conversely,thesameexperimentsinyoungermiceshowedthathighlevelsoftheantioxidantweredetrimentaltomemoryfunction. Previousstudieshaveconcludedthatoxidativestresscontributestoagingandaging-relatedimpairmentsinmemory.Klannconjectures
