The Sewing Machine Buzz By Jeff Vogel Happy New Year everybody. Thank you all for another successful business year. I have been busy posting YouTube videos to help owners of sewing machines with issues like oiling or general tips on how to get the most out of your machine. If you search using BERNINA Jeff, you will see my posted videos and can subscribe so you know when new ones are posted. Right now, they are geared toward BERNINA machines, but other brand tips will be added. I have added LauraStar Ironing Systems to the products I sell and can repair. They are designed in Switzerland and are packed full of features. Come in for a demonstration; we keep two models open in our classroom, or visit online at LAURASTAR.com. My special events fill up early so check your dates and sign-up as soon as you can. Everybody has so much fun and I end up selling a bunch of stuff because we get to see how the products work and the outside presenters are so knowledgeable. I am changing the way I run the Sew Savvy retreats. I am charging $20 and when you attend the retreat you receive $20 of Jeff Bucks to spend in the store. We have had several no-shows and a full waiting list. Baby Lock Solaris and Destiny owners... a new IQ club will be meeting once a month on Fridays to learn features on those models. Space is limited. On January 1st the price of scissors sharpening is going up to $5 a pair, $4 for 2” blades or shorter; knives still at $3 per knife. On January 10th or 11th I am hosting an embroidery event called Camouflage with Lace. Sheryl Burnette will be presenting the DIME (Designs in Machine Embroidery) company techniques and products. This event will be held at the American Lutheran Church and everyone will receive lunch, the Embroidery Tool Shed software (a $199 value), and a gift bag with an assortment of amazing products! All this for $29; time is 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Space is limited so sign up now. There will be some hands on embroidery and Make and Take projects – all materials provided. As always, thank you for your continued support! Needles It’s time to give another article on NEEDLES. Before 1910 every brand of sewing machine had its own size and type of needle. Shop owners had to stock a huge

number of needles and bobbin cases to supply all the different brands of machines. I have one of the antique dispensers I purchased from a customer, (see the picture.) It’s cool the way you have to dial up a

brand and match up the correct parts. Singer sewing machines soon became the largest manufacturer and still dominates the home sewing machine industry. They standardized the needle types and sizes so all manufacturers were using the Singer specifications for their needles. Today we have one specification of domestic sewing machine needle, however, we have over 30 sizes and styles for different fabrics and thicknesses from which to choose.

My motto is “Match the Project” with the correct needle. First, match the thread size to the needle. The thicker the thread the larger the number of needle, i.e. size 40 thread needs a size 14/90 needle. Next, match the fabric type and thickness to the correct type and size of needle, i.e. the thicker and tougher fabric needs a larger needle size. I have an educated staff that will be glad to guide you with needle selection. Our staff can also share our reference sheets. Why are there two size numbers on a package of needles? The European number is the 80, 90 ,100 size number which represents a metric size. The 10, 12,14 number is the US size numbers used by Singer. My store has a very complete selection of needles, even commercial types we keep in the repair room. A regular needle is good for 8 hours of sewing or two to four bobbins full of thread, so change that needle often, it is the cheapest tune-up you can give your machine.

Happy Sewing!
