President’s Message Gary Tucker

Well here it is, our last edition of the year, can you believe it? By the time you

are reading this, you have probably made plans to attend the "open” meeting in No-vember at Woodys or are sending an RSVP to our Holiday Dinner on December 9th, this year at the Oyster Point in Red

Bank. Why the change to Red Bank? Well, there has been a lot of change this year in the club, and yes, some members thought a change of venue was needed, we listened and we reached out to one of our club members that is affiliated with the

Oyster Point, and we are sure this year's festivities won’t disap-point! And change is good, right? We thank all of you for the change, and that change being the great turn outs and many many new members! The great drive to New Paltz, the fun afternoon at Donavan's, the intimate but enjoyable gathering at Hope Well Val-

ley, the near record turnout at the Thunder In The Pines DE, the fun pre-tech gathering at Bodymotion, the great turn out at the Blue Claws, an unfortunate cancelation of a scavenger hunt (why we need YOUR help!) and a new venue for Porsches on the beach at Asbury, its new home. As well as Enthusiast Night at Bodymotion,

a pub gathering in Spring Lake, Tech Night at Porsche Monmouth and our kick off, The Rolex and New Members Day at Woodys... Whew!

So, we had changes from the beginning of the year and we are clos-ing out the year with a change, from the feedback, and turnouts it seems the changes has been good and a HUGE THANK YOU SO

MUCH to all that have helped, all that have commented and sug-gested and a pre-thank you for those offering to make 2018 a great year by volunteering your time and getting involved, and with 2017 setting the tone, I think good things are coming to the Jersey Shore PCA! See you next year and stay tuned for some fun!

Sincerely, Gary Tucker

Dealer’s Perspective By Nick Trocchia So, If you are all wondering where an ex-music store owner of 30 years spends his (so called) retirement… look no further. When I sold Monmouth Music Center back in February 2016 I never thought I would be sitting here seeing, smelling, and hearing all the fun stuff that goes on behind the scenes of a Porsche dealership. But, after about a year of relaxation and going out of my mind from sensory deprivation, I called my friend Gary Tucker for a job; And what a great job I got. It’s been about 8 months now and after 7 training courses and 3 certification tests, I’m your new parts spe-cialist.

We are a big family. Everyone here is a pleasure to work with and we are all looking forward to the future. Service and parts are

currently located at Audi Eatontown, with the sales department just a few steps away next door to Buhler Ford. This situation is just temporary while our world class dealership is being constructed in our old location across the highway. We are hoping for the summer of 2018 for our grand reopening, but in the meantime come pay me a visit for all of your Porsche parts needs. Brian and I have access to all that is Porsche. Our prices are competitive and our service is terrific… Hope to see you all soon.

Members Spotlight - Rich Gardella By: Mike Bavaro

Richard and wife Madeline (46 years married) are like, many of us, the product of post WW2 (the big one, so far) baby and car crazy generation. So many stories around transporta-tion and the various ways we all got around. Rich’s first car was a 1956 Plymouth, so much for sports cars, in fact those Mopars were more tank than car. Rich crewed for a friend with a Lotus Super 7 and raced go karts thru the north east, eventually joining the Sports Car Club of America. Let’s not forget to thank him for his military service during the Vietnam era, Rich served honorably from 1967 to 1969 in the artillery 155 airmobile. Rich’s love for cars never wavered but took a back seat to their growing new business in 1985 when they started Servicemaster of the Shore Area. Add to that a growing family and now you have the next generation of car crazies to tend to. Rich and Madeline son Bryan bought an old 1966 Corvair turbo Convertible. Now, I have to take a pause here about the Corvair being a rear engine air cooled car so it was close to a Porsche. Please stop those thoughts and the rumors that surround that notion. I have worked on those cars, I have had friends with those cars, yes they were fun to drive and nowhere near as dangerous or unsafe as some claim. Just like any car it’s up to the driver to remain within the safe limits it was designed for, those late model Corvairs actually handled well, were fun to drive and cheap to operate. But that’s where the good times stopped, the oil leaks, burning oil and repairs were way beyond Porsche at that point, hence not too many left around. But, it got Rich and son Bryan back into the car club scene. They did driver education events at Lime Rock Park, Summit Point and Pocono Raceway. Now that’s how to enjoy a Corvair!

The Shoreline | November—December 2017 | Page 7

Richard and growing family eventually got into Mustangs and did track events with the Car Guys Club. One of their instructors had a Porsche and the Gardella finally found the per-fect track car. Rich purchased his first Porsche a 1988 Carrera in 1997 and immediately joined the Porsche Club. I remember meeting Rich along this time line and wondered why he stopped coming to the driver ed events that we both enjoyed so much. He went on to explain, back then, that he and his son had purchased a Legends Car and were doing that series. Over 9 years and 175 races took its toll on time and Rich was dedicated to traveling, business and his sons racing. As all things in life go full circle Rich returned to his roots and purchased a 2001 Box-ster S and returned to PCA drivers education events. Eventually Rich moved up to his present Porsche a 2007 Cayman S. Rich is quite active and volunteers his time to help our club activi-ties. The Gardellas especially like the camaraderie of their fellow Jersey Shore Porsche Club members and can be seen at many of our social events. So, at our next gathering, ask Rich about his Legends racing, or about his Corvair or Mustangs, he is always glad to reminisce, but what he likes talking about most is spending time with his family and grandchildren, no doubt the next generation of car crazies on deck.

Chasing a Championship

By Mike Bavaro

Bodymotion and our customers have earned plenty of Championship trophies, you can never have too many of those,

but we seek the “BIG ONE”, it’s the American way.

For our organization a championship in professional racing has been a goal for many years. As I recall, in 2006, we en-

tered our brand new Bodymotion/Schneider + Nelson 997 in the Grand Am Koni Challenge series and we were the first

997 on track in the USA. We finished 10th in the championship that year, not bad out of 29 teams, and not bad for a

one-car, underfunded, independent team. So we went back to work in 2007 and got to 9th in the Championship by

season’s end. I remember thinking, “well we did better than last year”, but with that mindset it would take us 10 years

to get to the top. Pretty close if your math is any good, as we finished third in the Championship last year and earned

three first place finishes, one of them the first win for Porsche’s GT4 Clubsport on the planet.

Now it’s 2017, this was to be the year with our Bodymotion #12 Porsche , to win the coveted top step. Our Cayman

GT4 Clubsport piloted by Cameron Cassels and Trent Hindman won the first four hour endurance race in IMSA Conti-

nental Challenge history, which just so happens to have been at Daytona International Speedway!

Yes! it is still sinking in, we won Daytona 2017. That put us leading the points in January and February 2017, then Se-

bring in March, Texas in May, still in first place, in fact for the next three races we led the points battle despite ever

tightening B.O.P. changes.

At Road America in August we got put in a squeeze, mid-race we pitted for fuel and tires and Trent took over the driv-

ing duties, no sooner did he get to turn 5 on his out lap when the red flag came out due to lightning. We sat for 27

minutes under that red flag until the sun came back out. Unfortunately there was not enough time left so they called

the race where we sat on pit lane! We finished 8th and lost our year long first place in points… by one point!

The Shoreline | November—December 2017 | Page 9

Back at it two weeks later at VIR. This was the death blow, we finished in 12th a lap down, our worst finish in two sea-

sons; we got caught a lap down and couldn’t get it back. Now down 18 points.

On to Laguna Seca, we won there last year but this year was a bit different, it would be a four hour enduro. We did very

well and placed 2nd overall, now some 14 points back of first place in the Championship.

Our last race of the year was first week in October, we went to Road Atlanta for the Petit LeMans weekend. We quali-

fied 6th and needed to win the race and hope our competitors finished last, a tall order, but the Bodymotion team's

tenacity all season wasn’t about to give up. Our competitors and eventual Championship winners from the RS1 team

#28 Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR blew their engine in qualifying! They secured a used engine from wrecked GT4

and changed it in 4 hours, even made the fan walk before the race. Despite numerous in-race problems the 28 car had

during the race with warnings and sensors, they soldiered on and finished behind us in the race but just a few points

ahead of us in the championship. Congrats to them and their drivers, well done. It was a thrilling ride and we just came

up short.

So the thought that haunted me from 10 years ago to win the championship goes on another year. We plan to field a

brand new Porsche Cayman GT4 MR with two new hotshoe drivers. See you at the 2018 edition of the 24 hours at Day-

tona where we do our first race, and remember: Bodymotion Racing is the defending champs of that 4 hour race. Have

a great holiday season and happy new year.

Hopewell Valley Winery Tour

On Saturday September 9th the PCA club had an event at Hopewell Valley Winery to enjoy appetizers, all kinds of wine and amazing mu-sic. The music was performed by Chris Roselle of the band Rave On and featured songs by Buddy Holly and other groups of that era. We have been there before and have always had a good time and this was no exception. There were new members who had a good time but asked why there were so few peo-ple there! Hopefully in the years to come, our group gets bigger and bigger!

If you missed this and we go again mark your calendars so you don't miss a fun evening!

Octoberfest Cruise

What a great Saturday it was! A little bit of drizzle scared no one away—even those with ‘Garage Queens’ came out. 26 people and 13 cars (mostly Porsches) caravanned up the Pali-sades Parkway; thank you to Brian O’Sullivan who led the beautiful drive. The best part was the winding roads through Harriman State Park where the leaves were just starting to turn. It was beautiful. Now onto the food... The Mountain Brauhaus staff was delightful. They served us delicious hot German specialties and ice cold German beer! Nothing like a good bratwurst, schnitzel and beer to celebrate Octoberfest!!! And after lunch the sun was shining for every-one’s ride home. A great time was had by all!

Clam Bake Donovan’s Reef—September 17, 2017

This almost did not happen! It was in the middle of a horrible hurricane season that effected so many in Texas and Florida and beyond. Kind of fitting that we were at a location wiped out almost 5 years ago from Sandy! The venue suggested cancelling, a pocket of weather opened up, a couple of e-mail blasts went out and low and behold, over 50 people showed up on a grey cool Sunday late morning/early afternoon for a clambake on the beach at the “new” Donovan’s! By the time all showed up and the lobsters and clams were ready, the sun came out and the afternoon heated up!

Music played, heaps of food were consumed (Lobster, Corn on the cob, Grilled Chicken, read deal Jersey Steamer Clams and more!) and maybe a libation or two were consumed… All that attended agreed that this must be repeated and the good folks at Donovan's have us on the calendar for next year! Kind of cool to consider, seeing as we are the Jersey Shore PCA, starting our outdoor events for the 2017 season at Asbury Park and finishing our outdoor events in Sea Bright; we are living true to our roots!
