…Mazal Tov to our Bais Abe doctors who made this year's "Best Doctors in America" list: Etai Goldenberg, George Grossberg, Alan Pestronk, Selwyn Picker, Michael Rauchman, and Greg Storch. Kol hakavod; we are grateful to have you as part of our community! A Shabbat Message from Rabbi Silberstein (this Dvar Torah appears in this week’s St. Louis Jewish Light) Carl Sagan once said, "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” In other words, none of us have ever done anything by ourselves. Anything that we manage to achieve is only possible because we find ourselves in a world and in circumstances that have made that possible. A few thousand years before Carl Sagan, Moses said much the same thing: “Be careful, lest you forget the L-rd your G-d...lest when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and dwell in them, and your herd and flocks multiply and your silver and gold multiply, and everything you have multiplies, you become haughty and you forget the L-rd your G-d...and you say 'My strength and the might of my hand made all this wealth for me.' Remember the L-rd your G-d, for He is the one who gives you the ability to make wealth, in order to establish His covenant. (Deuteronomy 8:11-18). If we have any degree of prosperity, the credit does not belong to ourselves. It may be we have worked hard, it may be that we have made smart decisions, it may be that we possess talents and abilities that have helped us to achieve. But we also live in a certain context, with certain social structures that have either helped our hard work and talent to pay off or perhaps hindered them from doing

so. Even our very talent, intelligence and the ability to work hard work are blessings that we did not earn. In America, we like to make heroes out of people who start from humble beginnings, and come to possess wealth and power. We call these people self made men or self-made women (though mostly we only talk about self-made men) and we hold them up as role models to be emulated. This unfortunately sends the message that the rest of us who haven't managed to rise from rags to riches, must be somehow deficient, either in hard work, intelligence or some other virtue. It also promotes arrogance and ingratitude among those who do manage to succeed. Our Sages taught us that G-d gives us the cure before the disease. If the disease is arrogance and self-satisfaction, the cure is gratitude. Immediately prior to the verses quoted above, the Torah states “When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the L-rd your G-d for the good land which He has given you.” (Deuteronomy 8:10) In other words, in order to avoid imagining ourselves to be “self-made men” or “self-made women,” we must practice gratitude by blessing G-d for our material well-being. Moses and Carl Sagan remind us that there is no such thing as a self-made man or woman. Anything we achieve is only possibly because of the circumstances we find ourselves in, and the talents and abilities G-d has blessed us with. This consciousness leads to a profound humility. If I am better off than someone else, or if I have achieved more than them, it is not through my own merit but through the blessings that G-d, in His inscrutable wisdom, has chosen to bestow on me. If we can cultivate this humble consciousness, perhaps we can cultivate not only gratitude for what we have, but also a sense of responsibility to use whatever wealth or ability we have been blessed with, in the service of G-d, our community and our fellow human beings.

Read YCT Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Dov Linzer’s Dvar Torah here: https://library.yctorah.org/2020/08/mezuzotdivineprotectionorhumanperfection/ Hearing the Shofar this Rosh HaShanah As of now, Bais Abe is planning to have two outdoor, public opportunities to hear the shofar on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. One will be held outside in front of the shul, and the other will be held at Lewis Park. We will have more information shortly. If you would like to hear the shofar but are unable to attend one of the public gatherings, please be in touch with Phyllis Shapiro, [email protected]. Additionally, if you are able to volunteer to blow the shofar outside of people’s homes on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, please be in touch with Phyllis. She is this year’s shofar shadchanit extraordinaire! New Programming Committee Bais Abe has a new Programming Committee to focus specifically on programs that will serve our members and friends during the pandemic in the best way possible. One thing we are planning is a Zoom “Voices of Bais Abe Speaker Series” the second Wednesday of the next three months. The members of the committee are Lilly Canel Katz, Simone Picker, Dr. Greg Storch, Phyllis Shapiro, and Nathan Waldman. We will do this through close reads of the high holiday liturgy and related rabbinic texts, group discussions, and spiritual writing exercises. Using Shulcloud (Bais Abe’s Database) Bais Abe’s database, Shulcloud, is a great tool for keeping in touch with shul staff, with other members, and for making sure your information is up-to-date. You can register for events, pay invoices and make donations, update demographic information (including yahrzeit observances, birthdays, etc.), and more. Now, is a good time to play around with the website and familiarize yourself with it.

1. Open a web browser and go to www.baisabe.com 2. In the top right corner you will see a log in button. Use the email that the shul has on file, and

your password, to log in. If you don’t know what email to use, or you have forgotten (or don’t know your password), please let Ruth in the office know.

3. Once you are logged in, it should say “Welcome [your name]” in the top right corner. On the right side as well, there should be a heading that reads “My Account.”

a. From “My Account” you can update your contact information, make donations, and so on.

Ruth in the office is happy to help answer questions or walk you through the process. Feel free to be in touch, 314-721-3030 or [email protected]. Bais Abe Mowers Club Is your lawn a little sad? Does it look like it needs a good haircut? If you are you someone who is unable to mow their own or rake leaves or trim bushes, the Bais Abe Mowers Club is here to help. If you are a senior or simply unable to tend to any outdoor needs, please email Rob Wasserman at [email protected] and he will organize and find someone to assist. The Mowers Club is a group of families whose children are ready to rake, trim, mow, weeding, planting, plowing, ranching, and partake in husbandry! -Daniel Picker and Rob Wasserman, Chairmen, Bais Abe Mowers Club A Message from Rabbi Silberstein - Helping and Asking for Help As the pandemic continues, and it remains unclear when restrictions will be lifted, or what the lasting economic impacts of this crisis will be, many members of our community are struggling financially. Some of you have come to me for help, and in fact I can attest that I’ve seen a sharp rise in requests for help from my discretionary fund since the pandemic started. Still, I suspect that there are more people in our community who are struggling to make up for the lost income. I want to make sure that everyone knows that there are resources available if you need some short term, temporary assistance. Besides my discretionary fund, which I can use to help with short-term financial needs, Jewish Family Services and Tomchei Shabbos are also important resources for members of our community who need some extra assistance with finances or food. Please, if you need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I also want to say, that while I have seen a dramatic spike in requests for help, I’ve also seen an increase in the number of donations coming in to the discretionary fund. This makes me confident that if we all contribute within our Shul and to efforts in the larger community, we will be able to successfully help one another weather this crisis. If you would like to contribute to my discretionary fund to enable me to help individuals in our community who are in need of help, you can do so through the Bais Abe website or by sending a check to the Shul marked “Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund.” I also encourage everyone who has a steady income right now to increase our giving to other local organizations fighting poverty, such as Tomchei Shabbos and the Federation, as mentioned above. It’s up to us to take care of one another in this difficult time, but that requires all of us to help in whatever ways we can and also to have the courage to speak up when we are in need and let someone know so they can connect us to the help and resources that are available. Stay health, stay safe, and please continue to take care of one another. - Rabbi Garth Silberstein

Halacha Highlight WHEN DOES THE JEWISH DAY END?

We recently had two Jewish fast days, the 17th of Tammuz and Tisha B’Av. You may have noticed that there were different opinions as to when they each ended. The same is true each week about when Shabbat ends – there are different opinions. There is a period of the day called Bein Ha’shmashot, the time between sunset and the actual end of the day. In the Talmud (Shabbat 34b) this period is defined as the time it would take to walk 3/4 of a mil (Talmudic mile, approximately .68 of our mile). The general opinion is that this is about 20 minutes, and based on this, some people today consider that fast days, other than Yom Kippur, end 20 minutes after sunset. For Shabbat (and holidays) everyone is more strict. The Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law), chapter 293, sets the end of Shabbat at the time that three small stars appear in the sky close to each other, and the Mishna Brurah, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan (1838-1933), says that we should wait until there is no light in the western sky. 20 minutes after sunset is not quite late enough to see no light or to see three stars. The most lenient opinion is Rabbi Yehiel Michael Tukachinsky, 1872-1955, who holds that the time Shabbat ends is 32 minutes after sunset in the winter and about 38 minutes in the summer. (For the difference between summer and winter see https://www.myzmanim.com/read/degrees.aspx.) Other opinions are those of the Chazon Ish, Rabbi Avrohom Yeshaya Karelitz (1878 – 1953), who fixed the end of Shabbat as 45-50 minutes after sunset, and Rabbenu Tam, a grandson of Rashi, who set it at 72 minutes after sunset. In the Shmooze, we base the time given for the end of Shabbat on myzmanim.com, which seems to follow the opinion of the Chazon Ish. -Jack Shapiro

Call for Volunteers for Farm 2 Family Program

Dear Bais Abe Family, As you are aware, our community has been blessed to be able to participate in the Farm 2 Family Government program. This program is there for all of us to participate in. There are no requirements or criteria to benefit from this program. Literally hundreds of families, come every Friday to pick up cases of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, milk and meal boxes for those with children 0-18. Due to the overwhelming success of this program, we are in serious need of more volunteers to help distribute the food. Everyone is masked. Volunteers walk up to the car window, ask what the driver would like and then the volunteer and others bring the boxes to the car. Distribution is from 9:45am-11:00am. (If you can help with set up from 9:00am that is even better.) If you can come for all or part of the time it would go along way to help keep the program going smoothly. If you can come or have any questions, please call or text Rabbi Mike Rovinsky at 314-498-6279.
