This service has been running for more than 50 years. Archbishop Glenn Davies commissions the prefects then gives them the opportunity to question him on issues of leadership. It was my pleasure to lead the service this year. During the service a strange moment of deju vu hit me. The last time I had stood at the front of St Andrew’s Cathedral I was wearing my wedding dress. This was particularly poignant as the Archbishop reminded our students that Jesus, who is our model of leadership, ‘took on the gesture of a slave’ by wrapping a towel around his waist and washing his disciples’ feet. It is this kind of leader that we wish our prefects to be; leaders who know it is not the clothes that make the woman but a heart willing to sacrifice for the sake of others. Jesus said in John 13:14-15, ‘Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.’

Senior School

Students step up to leadMrs Annette Ware | Head of Senior College

Many Senior School students have a yearning to exercise leadership this is a very positive desire and one that is strongly encouraged Leadership by students energises and strengthens our school community as well as helping to prepare young women for life beyond school It develops confidence and capacity builds connections and a sense of belonging and fosters risk taking and resilience

As the new school year begins students are stepping up to lead in wonderful creative and varied ways Our Year 12 students are throwing themselves into leading their houses in preparation for next weeksrsquo annual House Choir competition The excitement is palpable the verve is obvious and the sense of anticipation is building Earlier this week all Year 12 girls were presented with a badge by Mrs Krimmer in recognition of their significant leadership role this year

Our Year 10 and 11 students lead our clubs These range from service related clubs such as Oaktree Interact and Fairtrade to activity related clubs such as Chess and Agriculture Ideas for fund raising awareness raising and new initiatives are underway for 2017 with our girls bringing their energy passions and ideas to the fore

The Peer Support program has begun with Year 11 students connecting with Year 7 students to help them transition into

secondary school The parallel Peer Mentor program will begin next week and involve Year 11 students developing mentoring relationships with Year 9 students

As Year 9 students were formally welcomed into Senior College last year expressions of interest were invited for a range of leadership opportunities including being part of the Student Alliance Network Group the Senior College Breakfast Committee and being a School Tour Guide

lsquoHumans of Abbotsleighrsquo was launched by our Prefects this week with the aim of fostering connections amongst the students as they learn about each otherrsquos lives outside of school We look forward to this student initiative and the richness it will bring to our Senior School community The Prefects also attended the annual Anglican Schoolrsquos Prefect Service at St Andrewrsquos Cathedral this week They joined together with hundreds of other student leaders from across the broader Sydney region to be formally commissioned by the Archbishop The Most Reverend Dr Glenn Davies and to be inspired and encouraged in their leadership

Students are exercising leadership as part of our stage crew in drama and music leading their sporting teams and coaching teams and so the list goes on We encourage all students to avail themselves of one or more of the many opportunities on offer to develop these all information leadership skills

Elevate and Immerse in 2017Mrs Royna McNamara | Head of Critical and Creative Thinking

2016 saw the commencement of the Senior School Elevate and Immerse cocurricular program This course honed the investigative skills of girls with enquiring minds It was designed to appeal to girls who have a passion to work independently and who wish to explore an area outside their classroom work It involved participation in a weekly workshop which provided an opportunity to draw upon library resources as needed The Teacher Librarians in conjunction with me and Mrs Donna Moffatt our Director of Learning Innovation assisted girls in exploring their chosen research area

In Term 4 the inaugural group of researchers (from Years 7-11) presented their final research at an afternoon tea for students and staff How inspirational it was to hear the girls present their research with such passion and clarity in a supportive and collaborative environment How did Elevate and Immerse benefit these students

Not only has research allowed me to learn about a subject that I am very interested in on a more in-depth level but it has also taught me valuable critical thinking and problem solving skills through experiment troubleshooting thinking critically making decisions about future directions based on previous results Research has also made me comfortable working as part of a team because much of what I did was in collaboration with others A huge benefit is just getting to know what lsquodoing researchrsquo actually means I heard about it all the time and it was always a vague thing because anybody you talk to says that you can do research on whatever interests you - Collective viewpoint

We need only look to the ACARA document on Critical and Creative Thinking to see the value of developing these skills

Critical and creative thinking involves students thinking broadly and deeply using skills behaviours and dispositions such as reason logic resourcefulness imagination and innovation in all learning areas at school and in their lives beyond school

Thinking that is productive purposeful and intentional is at the centre of effective learning By applying a sequence of thinking skills students develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the processes they can use whenever they encounter problems unfamiliar information and new ideas They become more confident and autonomous problem-solvers and thinkers

Click here to read the document in full

Elevate and Immerse will be invaluable as girls prepare for extension subjects and university studies Research experience allows undergraduate students to better understand published works learn to balance collaborative and individual work determine an area of interest and jump start their careers as researchers

We look forward to helping those girls who sign up to think outside the square question assumption and follow a passion in a particular area of interest

Interested girls should speak with Mrs Foxall in the Library as soon as possible

Weekend fun for boardersMrs Rochelle Wiley | Head of Boarding

The first weekend of the year is always a closed weekend for boarders Letrsquos hear from the girls and see what they got up to

Friday night Years 8 and 12

Last Friday evening the Year 8 boarders went to Wheeldon House to have a fun games night with the Year 12 boarders We began the night with a hand game that involved a lot of focus and concentration We were split into groups and eventually there were two finalists from each group In the end two Year 12s won Afterwards we played a game called Ninja It required a lot of determination to stay in the game The last game we played was called Celebrity Heads It was fun to watch as to play Finally we had ice cream and drinks and concluded the night with some dancing

Friday night Years 9 and 10

The Years 9 and 10 boarders in McCredie House played games which included challenging relays in teams and the always popular lsquoBangrsquo on the Top Oval after dinner This was just the start of the Boarder Fun Weekend taking place on the following days We played games that were entertaining and lively and we all made sure everyone in the house was included and enjoying themselves These games helped us to get to know the other girls in McCredie and unwind after the first week back at school Later that night we gathered again in teams to participate in a cake decorating competition with the general theme of lsquoholidaysrsquo We used our resources to create different scenarios including a beach retreat skiing slopes and New Yearrsquos Eve featuring the Sydney Harbour Bridge ndash which later went on to win

Georgina Cooper Year 10 McCredie House

Saturday outing to Luna Park

Our outing to Luna Park was an exciting adventure All boarders from 7-12 travelled by bus and it was great to go as the whole Boarding School The lsquoHair Raiserrsquo was a big hit and an exhilarating experience for all The haunted house left girls with racing hearts and the shakes New boarders enjoyed the views given by the ferris wheel overlooking the beautiful Sydney Harbour Itrsquos not every day you can see the Opera House and Harbour Bridge

Sunday Funday

Boarder Funday held last Sunday was a day full of excitement Boarders from each year group were mixed into a number of colour groups allowing people to get all dressed up and bond with someone new The day started off with a scavenger hunt This involved venturing around the entire school in search for clues Activities at every clue station meant that teamwork was required Each team worked hard to stick together and be enthusiastic to make this a fun day for everyone Next each of the groups had to work together using each personrsquos unique skills to create a short performance which was then judged by a panel including Headmistress Mrs Krimmer Head of Boarding Mrs Wiley and our own Chaplain Reverend Stoddart To finish off the hot day everyone went to the pool to cool down and various activities This day really helped to prove that together we are better

Madison Samali Year 12 Wheeldon House

Prefect Commissioning at St Andrewrsquos CathedralOn Thursday morning the Prefects attended the annual Anglican Schoolsrsquo Prefect Commissioning Service at St Andrewrsquos Cathedral The service was led by our own Chaplain Rev Jenni Stoddart and student leaders from more than 30 Anglican schools from across New South Wales gathered to be officially commissioned into their leaderships roles Archbishop Glenn Davies brought a message about servant leadership and the importance of following the example set by Jesus on the cross of true sacrifice The students were also encouraged to look to the Bible for truth inspiration and support in their leadership A QampA session was held after morning tea in which the studentsrsquo questions about leadership character and wisdom were addressed thoughtfully by the Archbishop to help us all to grow more in our understanding of Christian leadership It was a worthwhile experience for all the Prefects to consider how to lead and from where to find inspiration
