Upcoming Technical Seminars

…… Joe Eyl, QCNCRS Technical Representative Please stay tuned … we have a number of exceptionally worthwhile subjects to explore this year. Things I Have Noticed

…… The Indiana Playboy

As you know I am an old “back-roads” race driver and have met, and known, many interesting… and some now famous, criminals. But in getting around to be able to do all the crazy things I did, I have seen much to be curious about America. I call it… ONLY IN AMERICA!

ONLY IN AMERICA: WHY ….

Can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance?

Are there handicap parking spaces in front of a skating rink?

Do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke?

Do we have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering?

Do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front?

And one I particularly like… On a Japanese

food processor: “Not to be used for the other use.” Now, somebody out there, help me on this. I’m a bit curious.

Government News

…… Tom Smith

There are a lot of us who cannot spend unlimited amounts of money restoring Corvettes… so just to give you encouragement that you can often get the best for substantially less… here is a story about NASA vs. the Russians.

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in ZERO gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface, including glass and at temperatures from below zero to over 300 C.

The Russians used a pencil.

My Six-Speed 1976 Corvette

…… Rod Russell

My first Corvette was a 1958 290 hp fuel injector that went faster than it’s brakes could handle. It began to float at 91 mph. So at 135 mph it had very light steering and NO brakes. It went 14.6 in the quarter mile at Edgewater Dragstrip. The seats were not made from material that lasted very long so I had them rolled & pleated.

I loved warm summer evenings riding with the top down, rumbling along through my hometown with the prettiest girls always wanting a ride. When you are 19 years old what else could you want? Gas was 40 cents a gallon.

Since then there has been twelve more Corvettes, but never one that matched my first love. I used to have dreams about finding it again and buying it back. Sometimes I would wakeup exhausted from dreaming I was running to catch it. Always in my mind was the thought of how fast my 1958 was and the feelings it gave. When I was sad it made me happy. When things didn’t go quite right, it made them better. And how nobody ever beat me at the

Always in my mind was the thought of how fast my 1958 was and the feelings it gave. When I was sad it made me happy. When things didn’t go quite right, it made them better. And how nobody ever beat me at the light.

In 1997 I met my red 1976 Corvette. It had a broken motor, sloppy steering, wandering suspension… but it WAS RED. (Matt Stansbury came to my garage to help me determine what was wrong with it… he said, “Boy that sounds really bad!”. He knows a lot. All we could salvage from the motor was the block (a four bolt main 1970’s high performance from something other than a Corvette) and six pistons that turned out to be $100.00 each TRW high performance. The cam was a roller cam that someone had decided to match to regular hydraulic lifters… this makes a roller cam become a round lobed piece of junk. Two of the pistons had been installed backwards… TRW high performance pistons are center-offset. What this does is

decided to match to regular hydraulic lifters… this makes a roller cam become a round lobed piece of junk. Two of the pistons had been installed backwards… ouch .. TRW high performance pistons are center-offset. These pistons put in backwards make skirts fracture, rod bearings spin, etc. So much for the piston rods and the crank.

The heads were double hump heads that everyone wants, but not these. They had been pre-loaded wrong and were cracked down the middle (both) right through the valve seats. To get them fixed turned out to be more expensive that getting a new set of high performance aftermarket heads.

A few months later we had a 400+ hp and 378 pounds of torque motor that is just on the edge of being unhappy on the street, but good mannered enough to be driven around the world.

The red car with a two-tone tan and cream interior turned out to originally have been white with a red interior.

With a 3:36 rear-end, the performance is terrific. When I reviewed the transmission gearing with Mike Murray (it has a double overdrive with a .50 sixth gear) he said, “What are you going to do with a 180 mph car?” It seems Mike was right… I am doing 2000rpm at 90 mph. However, what I wanted was the 30+ mpg I now am getting with a 400+hp engine.

I do not know who the guy was with the C-6 who thought he could outrun an old 1976 Corvette… I hope he didn’t sell his car.

Notice: You had to suffer

through this goofy story

because no one sent me any

news. Everyone have a

boring month?
