At the corner booth of McDonald’s on Main Street, the brown plastic tray can barely contain the pile of McDonald’s food. These three swimmers are in training.

FLP

Few athletes qualify to meet the standards set by the most visible group on the Hibbing High School swim team: 200 pounds and noticeable love handles. Seniors Nate “Buzz” Monson, Earl “Fats” Klandis and Matt “Loaf” Mornstein make up the team’s self-proclaimed Fat Boy Club. They also founded the FBC, which meets at 12:04 p.m. daily in the family-sized corner booth at McDonalds.

NLP

Monson says he suggested the club as a joke. He swims the 500 meter, but spends most of the meet cheering.

MISSING

“None of us can make the I qualified for state club,” Monson said. “This gives us something to be proud of. The other guys on the team are jealous of our club. And our bodies.”

RP

The daily McDonald’s routine started when the Fat Boys were sophomores. Each of them has gained 30 pounds since.

TNP

“Four number one comby meals are always there waiting for us at lunch,” Mornstein said. “Whoever finishes first gets to have the extra one.”

RP

Mornstein says they’ve made a reputation for themselves and challenged their peers to think differently about body-size stereotypes. Still the club is no joke, and these guys are in training.

MISSING

Mornstein hasn’t qualified for state, but he’s going. He’s the loudest cheerleader the team has.

TNP

Just last week senior and team captain Bob Hobarth qualified in the 200 individual medley. He’s looking forward to the weight these guys bring to an event.

MISSING

“Man, when he’s bouncing around out there, the whole team gets into it,” Hobarth said. “The stands are packed with students, and I think it’s just because of the Fat Boys.”
