GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE

Dear Sorors,

While the month of May is closing out some service projects for the summer, other program initiatives are “full speed ahead”!! Our Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) are preparing for our 8th grade participants graduation! Kudos to our Health Initiative for doing double duty last month volunteering at the Diabetes Expo at the Cobb Galleria and facilitating our Health Fair at the Ivy Community Center, all on the same day…April 27th!

May is Asthma Awareness Month, American Stroke Month, and National High Blood Pressure Month. Speak to any member of our Health Initiative and I am certain they will give you the latest information you need to stay healthy.

Economic Security held an Economic Forum last month in collaboration with the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, North West Georgia Chapter. It was a great success!

Social Justice is still asking for donations for the residents at My Sister’s House!

EYL, Economic Security, Social Justice, and the AKA Connections displayed their scrapbooks at the 60th South Atlantic Regional Conference in Charleston, S.C., and while we were not given any awards, Kappa Omega did display to the region our outstanding service projects for 2012. Well done Kappa Omega…our efforts were not in vain! Special thanks to Sorors Janis Drake, Elvira Kynerd, and Felicia Coleman for your hard work in putting our chapter exhibit on display!!

Kappa Omega will be the lead chapter in facilitating the 2013 EYL Summit which is scheduled for the fall of this year. Sorors, we are going to need everyone’s assistance with this collaborative project. All 14 metro chapters of AKA will be participating.

Sorors remember, it’s never too late to join a program committee. The best is yet to come!!!

“We help each other.”

Why Your Financial Planner Isn't Giving You the Advice You Want By Dan Caplinger (www.dailyfinance.com) Most people could really use some help managing their finances, yet relatively few seek the services of professional financial planners. And here's on reason why: Those pros typically aren't focusing on what the average client really wants. A recent articlefrom professors Thomas Warschauer and Donald Sciglimpaglia in the Financial Services Review sheds some light on the disconnect between financial planners and their clients. The professors surveyed several hundred people across the country to see which financial planning services they valued most highly -- and the results reveal what could be seen as a failure of the profession to address clients' core needs. Don't Sell Me Anything

Many financial planners center their advice around their clients' investment portfolios, working hard to put together detailed investment strategies. Because most of them collect their fees based on assets under management or commissions from investment sales, that focus on investing seems natural.

Yet the study found that in general, people want services that emphasize protection and financial security more than investment-related advice. By far, the service that was most highly valued has helped to ensure that people have a large enough emergency fund to handle unexpected financial hardships. Legal protection through trusts and powers of attorney was the second most-valued service, while protecting against disability and health-related expenses rounded out the top three.

Am I Overexposed?

Even within the investing realm, the highest-value services are far more general in scope than many financial planners provide.

The study found that clients most want to know whether they're adequately diversifiedand have investments that will meet their financial goals and income needs. They put far less value on specific investment recommendations that seek to time the market or outperform market benchmarks. Even assessing risk levels isn't viewed as being as important as getting an overall assessment of financial health. On the other hand, clients simply aren't willing to pay much for comprehensive advice. The study found that fewer than one in five people would pay $500 for financial planning services, with only one in 20 being willing to pony up $1,000 or more. Ask for What You Need

If you want financial planning advice, it's essential to understand that financial planners have to make a living. As long as they rely on fees from investment products for their income, they'll overemphasize investing advice. To get the advice you want, talk with your financial planner about the best way to pay for it.

EAF Endowment

Dear Sorors,

As we commemorate Kappa Omega Chapter's 90th Anniversary, the Basilei Council has elected to honor this occasion by enhancing our legacy with the establishment of an Endowment Fund, through the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc. (EAF).

Each Kappa Omega Soror is asked to contribute $25.00 towards the $5,000 required to create a permanently restricted fund that will draw interest to the principal. This interest will facilitate growth and eventually capitalize at $20,000.

Please make your $25.00 donations (check or money order) payable to Kappa Omega. We also accept cash. Payments will be collected at the March chapter meeting.

As contributors to the EAF Endowment, all donors will be recognized in the Kappa Omega Chapter History Annual, which will commemorate our Chapter’s 90 years of exceptional service to all mankind.

Thank you for your support as we celebrate our 90 years of outstanding service.

Sisterly with Love,

Soror Natalee Bryant, EAF Captain (770) 987-2045 [email protected].
