Ican’ttellyouthatsmoothiesweremyfirstlove—becausetheyweren’t.Pullingout a smoothie maker and stocking up on all sorts of fruits and veggies justwasn’tmything.Instead,Ihadasweettooth.So,whetherIwashavingcoffeeordonuts, Ialwayswantedsomeextrasugar. Icravedsugar!Frommycar tomyhandbags, sugary snacks could be easily found everywhere for my ownconvenience. Iwas likea sugar smugglerbut thatwouldchange sooner than Irealized.
Not surprisingly,my sugar addiction led to seriousweight gain,migraineheadaches and low energy levels. It wasn’t encouraging to say the least. Myenergylevelswereliterallydowntozero.IfeltlikeIwasrunningonempty.Onatypicalday,Iwoulddragmyselfoutofbed,dragmyselftowork,dragmyselfaroundtheofficethendragmyselfbackhome.Lifebecamealiteraldragforme.Furthermore, nomatter howmuch I slept, I alwayswoke up feeling tired andsleepy.
Admittedly, Igot tiredof feeling tired. Iwasn’thappywithhow I felt orhowIlooked.Quitefrankly,Iwasina‘sweet’mess.AsIdesperatelysearchedforawayoutofmy‘sugar’dilemma,afriendofmineconvincedmetojoinheron a 10-day smoothie challenge. At first, I wasn’t excited about it. I wasskeptical about being able to stickwith the challenge and I was alsoworriedaboutbeingsugardeprivedfor10days.Anyhow,Istilldecidedtogiveitatry.Iwasdesperateforchange!Besides,Ithought,ifIcouldchangemylifeinjust10days,thenit’swellworthatry.
Thefirstthreedaysofthechallengeweremostdifficult.IfeltasthoughIcouldn’tmakeitthroughwithoutsuccumbingtomyusualsugarcravings.Ihad
to agonizingly refuse sugary treats at work and everywhere else. I felt sotortured.ThiswasoneofthehardestthingsthatIeverhadtodoinalongtime.Despitealltheodds,however,Isurvivedwithoutcheating.Surprisingly,bydayfive,Ihadlost5pounds!Amazingisn’tit?Bythistime,Ifeltreallyencouraged.At the end of 10 days, I had lost a whopping 11 pounds, my headaches haddisappeared andmy energywas greatly improved.
