  • The Articles (or Soldiers Covenant) are virtually identical with the original ones drawn up at the end of the 19th Century. The Salvation Army shows steadfastness of purpose and refuses to lower its standards or to sacrifice its principles.

  • 1.We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice. 2. We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship. 3. We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead-the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory. Believing that The Salvation Army has been raised up by God, and is sustained and directed by Him, I do here declare that I am thoroughly convinced of the truth of the Armys teaching that is to say: (the Doctrines)

  • 4. We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man. 5. We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocence, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God. 6. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.
  • Slide 9
  • 7. We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation. 8. We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself. 9. We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
  • Slide 10
  • 10. We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 11. We believe in the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Dont you know that you yourselves are Gods temple and that Gods Spirit lives in you. If anyone destroys Gods temple, God will destroy him; for Gods temple is sacred and you are that temple. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 Everything is permissible-but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible-but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.

  • In the Salvationists view, what does gambling include? lottery, bingo, casinos, sports pools, raffles, horse racing, etc. Whats so harmful about these activities? What should be the stand of a Salvationist when it comes to those new casinos and gambling establishments which are opening in many areas of the country? Whats wrong with Get Rich Quick schemes and why should a Salvationist avoid this type of money-making?
  • Slide 20
  • Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. 1 Timothy 6:9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.
  • Slide 21
  • The Bible does not specifically forbid gambling but we should hesitate to get involved with it. God presents work as the normal way to get the money we need. Ephesians 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. Are we looking to God or to the lottery for our needs?
  • Slide 22
  • From the Orders and Regulations for Soldiers regarding GAMBLING: It has developed into a social evil with which the soldier will have nothing to do, in whatever form it appears, whether it is betting on horse-racing, etc., sweepstakes, lotteries, raffles, football pools, bingo and other forms of gambling. Gambling operates on the un-Christian basis of belief in luck and for this reason above all the Salvationist will not gamble. Chosen to be a Soldier, page 34

  • ...to us to owe nothing but love in this verse is a powerful reminder of Gods distaste for all forms of debts that are not being paid in a timely manner. • What is our obligation as tithers? What is The Salvation Armys rule about tithing? What are the advantages of tithing?
  • Slide 30
  • Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room for it. Deuteronomy 14:22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year.
  • Slide 31
  • We should give the Lord first place in everything. We should honor the Lord with firstfruits. This means to set aside the tithe first, before all other bills and expenses. If you leave the tithe until last, God usually misses out. We should give our tithe cheerfully -2 Corinthians 9:7 God loves a cheerful giver.
  • Slide 32
  • We should give offerings over and above our tithe to needful ministries if they are worthy. We should keep our giving secret dont give and boast about it.
  • Slide 33
  • Tithing recognizes Gods ownership of everything we have. Tithing helps us to grow in our walk with Christ Matthew 6:33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
  • Slide 34
  • Many Christians believe that the principle of giving one-tenth should be carried over to the New Testament in giving to the church and other Christian organizations. This is Billy Grahams stand on tithing. Some Christians who tithe do so simply because they respect the Old Testament principle and find it a helpful place to begin in their giving. We should give individually, regularly, methodically and proportionately. The matter of your giving is between you and God, and He always takes into account our circumstances. He knows when they are beyond our power to direct and control.
  • Slide 35
  • the important thing is that we see it as a privilege and not a burden. It should not be out of a sense of duty, but rather out of love for the Lord and a desire to see His Kingdom advanced. we must remember our priorities? Is Christ really first or do we put ourselves and our own desires first? make sure Christ is first in your life and then ask Him to guide you.

  • From the Orders and Regulations for Soldiers regarding TITHING: The Salvation soldier will not forget the promise he gave when signing the Articles of War to spend all time, strength, money and influence he can in supporting and carrying on the salvation war...the Bible and Christian tradition mention the paying of tithes. For practical purposes there may be various ways of calculating ones income...but the principle is clear. Not a few Salvationists give one-half of their tithes as their regular contribution to the corps and from the other half they give contributions to the Self-Denial Appeal (World Services) collections and special purposes. • Why does delving into pornography pose such a problem for people? What are the dangers and advantages of internet use relative to pornography? What is the harm in watching R rated films? Why is living out a moral standard so important? What should that moral standard include? Why should we be watching the way we dress and the way that our children dress?

  • The advertising industry is using the exploitation of the body more blatantly than ever before. It is used to sell almost everything, including alcohol, automobiles and sex. Sex sells and as Christians, we have to be cautious about what we watch on TV, what kind of literature we read, what kind of music we listen to. Statistically speaking, every major destructive behavior in this country is the same for Christians as it is for the secular world. And it is adults who are refusing or neglecting to set the moral standards within their homes. In four informal polls taken at past Christian World View Conferences, 85-95% of families polled have access to the internet. However, less than 12% have filtering of any kind.

  • Psalm 101:3 I will set no sinful thing in front of my eyes. I hate the work of those who are not faithful. It will not get hold of me? Ephesians 5:3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for Gods holy people. 2 Corinthians 7:1 Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. Romans 6:19 I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.

Philippians 4:8-9 from The Message Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, graciousthe best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.

  • From the Orders and Regulations for Soldiers regarding PORNOGRAPHY: Two distressing symptoms of the moral deterioration of our generation are the increasing use of VULGAR and PROFANE SPEECH and the deliberate use of OBSCENITY and PORNOGRAPHY. The Salvationist will fight to keep themselves unsullied from all impurity, including unclean conversation and the reading of any obscene book or paper and exhibitions of any kind. The same standards will determine what television and radio programs the soldier will allow in the seclusion of his home. Chosen to be a Soldier, page 35

To non-smokers, smoking is intolerable; to some individuals, smoke from others cigarettes can produce dangerous toxic reactions. Smoking is against the principles of being careful not to offend and of being considerate.

  • Christians must come face to face with the shocking realities that while more than 90% of all lung cancer victims are smokers and scientific studies have also shown that smokers have more than three times as many heart attacks as non-smokers.
  • Slide 46
  • From the Orders and Regulations for Soldiers regarding smoking: The use of TOBACCO in any form was discouraged in the first edition of the soldiers regulation on the grounds that it was: Injurious to health, unclean, a waste of money, a disagreeable infliction upon others and an unnatural habit of self-indulgence. In 1975, it was decided that no person who uses tobacco in any form could be accepted as a soldier. The Articles of War were amended to take in a corresponding declaration of abstention. • Why does the Army forbid even social drinking? The Bible talks about Jesus and the disciples drinking wine. Why shouldnt we be allowed? What if my spouse drinks and is not a Salvationist? What should my attitude be?

  • Proverbs 23:20 Do not join those who drink too much or gorge themselves on meat. Romans 13:13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Romans 14:13 Therefore, let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brothers way.

  • In Scripture, the word often used for wine was tirosh. It referred to new or sweet grape juice. Norman Geisler, former Dean of Liberty Center for Christian Scholarship, Liberty University, has written: Many wine drinking Christians today mistakenly assume that what the New Testament meant by wine is identical to wine used today. This is NOT true. In fact, todays wine is by Biblical definition strong drink, and hence forbidden by the Bible.
  • Slide 51
  • What the Bible frequently meant by wine was basically purified water, purified by adding some alcoholic wine. The Holman Bible Dictionary says wine was also used as a medicine and disinfectant. Thirteen different words are translated wine in the King James Version of the Bible. The word wine has a wide range of meanings in the Bible, covering everything from grape juice to concentrated grape syrup to occasionally, to alcoholic wine.

  • 1. Drinking can lead to drunkenness. 2. The Bible condemns strong drink. 3. Even in moderate amounts alcohol has noticeable effects on the body. Because it enters the blood stream it touches almost every organ (including the brain) and its effects on feelings and behavior are well known.
  • Slide 53
  • 4. Drinking (and drugs) can cause others to stumble 1 Corinthians 1:32-33 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. 5. Drinking and drugs harm our bodies, which are the Lords. 6. Alcohol and drugs are addictive. 7. Drinking does not advance the cause of Christ nor does it glorify God. Logos Resources, wwwlogosrecources.com

  • Drinking socially is a worldly activity and as believers we should not conform to the world. Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will is His good pleasing and perfect will.
  • Slide 55
  • We are not to love the world. 1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. We are to be separate from the world. 2 Corinthians 6:17 Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.

  • Galatians 5:19-21 New International Version The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  • Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  • The word translated sorcery is the Greek word PHARMAKEIA ( ) from which we get the English word pharmacy. 1) the use or the administering of drugs 2) poisoning 3) sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it. This strongly suggests that Christians should not practice drug use.

  • From the Orders and Regulations for Soldiers Regarding DRINKING and DRUGS: The Salvation soldier must abstain from the use of all intoxicating liquorand from the non- medical use of all addictive drugs.
