THE SOUL OF LEE GENESIS NEWSCLIPS

Lee Genesis Takes Manhattanby Kay BourneContributorMonday Jan 14, 2008

Singer Lee Genesis. Lee Genesis bopped around the specially constructed rink at the Coliseum in New York on roller skates. ˝I got talked into doing this,˝ the singer admits. It was the height of the disco era, the 1980s, and Genesis was a featured singer on a program of Polygram Records’ Delite artists - The Crown Heights Affair and Kool & The Gang, among others. Genesis with his group Site, four back up skaters and singers, two guys and two girls, swirled around the floor to his hits ˝Love Either Grows or Goes˝ and ˝I Want To Do It.˝

Grace Jones, however, was wobbly. The statuesque black Jamaican film actor (May Day in James Bond spy pic ˝A View To A Kill,˝ 1985) and high fashion model hadn’t had the advantage of skating lessons beforehand. Gamely, she pushed towards Genesis, her mood less than celebratory. She at 5’10½˝; Genesis maybe three or four inches shorter. ˝Don’t you let me fall,˝ she warned, glaring. A lady with a temper, Jones in 1981 had slapped chat show

host Russell Harty across the face live on air after he turned to interview other guests. As Genesis recalls that performance what stands

out in his memory is Grace Jones shakily coming at him, as she snarls ˝Don’t you let me fall!˝

Genesis recalled another celebrated encounter with a gay icon a few years before: his two-month gig with Bette Midler at the Continental Baths in New York held other kinds of surprises. He had auditioned for the job for Barry Manilow, whom he found warm and gracious and appreciative of Genesis’s rendition of ˝MacArthur Park,˝ and so was hired by Continental Bath owner Steve Ostrow. Neither of them thought to educate Genesis on the special circumstances in which he’d be performing. ˝The men in the audience were all in towels (and the women were fully dressed),˝ he says. ˝At the end of the set, to show their enthusiasm for my performance, they threw the towels at me.

His appearance at downtown Manhattan’s Highline Ballroom, Tues., Jan. 22, likely won’t see such hijinks. But be ready for a memorable night even so what with the special guest artist, the dance industry recording artist Barbara Tucker, Lee’s introduction of some tunes from his sparkling, new CD, ˝The Soul of Lee Genesis,˝ and a bounty of supporting musicians, including New York favorites La Tasha S. Jordan and Michelle Matlock, with a crack band that can groove, improvise, and rock the house. (Tucker, whose ˝Love Vibrations˝ is a current hit, works with the noted production team Masters At Work - Little Louie Vega & Kenny ˝Dope˝ Gonzalez, a relationship that’s produced ˝Deep Inside,˝ ˝Beautiful People,˝ ˝I Get Lifted,˝ ˝Stop Playing With My Mind,˝ and ˝Stay Together.˝ After her show, she’ll emcee Genesis’s.)

The Boston Globe was wildly enthusiastic in its coverage of the recent try-out night at Johnny D.’s, a club in Somerville, Mass. Admission at the 431 West 16th club is free with a $10 minimum at tables, first come, first seated. There are two shows, 8 pm and 10 pm; doors open at six with music by DJ Audi Mansell

Genesis is acclaimed as a singer of many styles from Broadway show tunes to complex jazz compositions, performing at jazz fests internationally and with such as dates at the Knitting Factory with free jazz keyboardist Cecil Taylor, to R&B and gospel. He teamed up with major dejay disco entrepreneur Bob Sinclair, Jr. to do ˝My Only Love˝ (1998).

Out as a gay man for decades, and with the same partner, Bob Leach, for 30 years, Genesis uses Leach’s art for his CD covers and operates a 44-foot printer to digitalize Leach’s art into posters and giclee print fine art.

Born in Brooklyn to rigorous preacher parents, Genesis began his singing career in Pentecostal churches. (His father had been one of the famous Selah Jubilee Singers who recorded extensively in the 1930s and 1940s.) But Genesis says living by that sect’s restrictions which denied his sexuality made him feel ˝so bound, so guilt ridden. I want to love God and still live life.˝

He found the church for him with Reverend Ike, founder and pastor of Christ United Church with its philosophy of the science of living. Rev. Ike’s church in New York is the block long Palace Cathedral at 175th and Broadway, a gorgeous facility that Carnegie Hall used when it did its 3 day fund raiser to renovate its building.

˝Rev. Ike is interested in the betterment of his congregant’s minds and believes in leaving their personal lives alone,˝ says Genesis. Genesis became the director of music for the popular television evangelist, a paid position he recently left to devote himself to making a pair of CDs, the second of which will be a jazz excursion.

When Genesis looks back over his years as a singer, he finds that the rewards for plumbing so many styles is ˝that I understand my music better; I can differentiate my music from everyone else’s. I’m a chameleon. Now I’ve taken the time to shut down and out of that reflection I am singing as myself. Yet I am just as excited about singing as I was as a teenager.˝

THE SOUL OF LEE GENESIS: A RARE NEW YORK APPEARANCE BY SOUL TITAN LEE GENESIS AT HIGHLINE BALLROOM TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, AT 8:00 PM AND 9:30 PM

Celebrating His New CD: The Soul of Lee Genesis

NEW YORK, November 27, 2007 – LB Productions presents a CD release party in celebration of THE SOUL OF LEE GENESIS, a smoking new CD (Berger Platters 51547) by soul titan LEE GENESIS, at Highline Ballroom, 431 West 16th Street between 9th & 10th Avenues in New York, on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Admission is FREE, with a $10 minimum at tables. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.; first come, first seated.

Genesis’ band features Frank Wilkins on keyboards, Chuck Langford on tenor, Dave Acker on guitar, Tim Ingles on bass, a drummer to be announced soon and two of New York’s favorite back-up singers, Latasha Jordan and Stacy Burnette. Performing music from the new CD, The Soul of Lee Genesis, Lee and his band know how to get you on your feet or groove you in your seat. For musical samples go to www.leegenesis.com.

An East Coast icon in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Lee led a Boston-based band called Heat. He was hot then; and now more than four decades later, he comes out smoking with his debut CD, The Soul of Lee Genesis. A natural talent, with an awesome vocal range and mesmerizing charisma, Lee could and would easily "stop the show" and did so regularly in many of New York's most celebrated clubs including Trude Heller's, The Top Of The Gate, Dangerfield's, Mikells, The Copacabana, The New York Coliseum, Folk City, Tramps, Fives, Oh Ye Fiddlesticks, Pal Joey's, The African Room and The Improvisation. He performed sometimes with his own bands, but often with distinguished jazz artists Red Garland and John Forster (Charles Mingus' pianist) as well as with Jaki Byard and Cecil Taylor. He opened for Dakota Staton and also for Bette Midler and Barry Manilow at the legendary Continental Baths. In addition, Genesis drew rave reviews with LaVerne Baker, George Russell’s New York Big Band, Baird Hersey’s Year of the Ear Band, Stanton Davis’ Mysticism Band and he rocked the New York Coliseum with CITI, the area’s renowned roller disco group.

The personification of the word 'gospel,' Lee Genesis was born (Lee Antley) in Brooklyn, NY, the son of preacher parents who encouraged him to stand up and sing on soap boxes at the tender age of three. Lee would "set up shop on the box" and let the 'good word' be told via song on local street corners and on Sunday mornings in one of Brooklyn's foremost Pentecostal churches, Lambert's Chapel United Holy Church, which was founded in 1959, by his parents. Lee's mother was the congregation's powerful preacher and his father was the brilliant musical director. His dad had also been one of the famous Selah Jubilee Singers, recorded extensively in the '30s and '40s; and it was he who took the time to train the young Lee in the powerful and charismatic vocal techniques so necessary to preaching the Gospel.

Genesis’ band features Frank Wilkins on keyboards, Chuck Langford on tenor, Dave Acker on guitar, Tim Ingles on bass, Jim Arnold on drums and two of New York’s favorite back-up singers, LaTasha S. Jordan and Michelle Matlock. Performing music from the new CD, Lee and his band know how to get you on your feet or

Singers recorded extensively in the '30s and '40s and it was he who took the time to train the young Lee in the powerful and charismatic vocal techniques so necessary to preaching the Gospel. Ordained as a minister at 15 and then trained as an accountant in college, Lee landed a "real" job with the New York Stock Exchange; but in his late-twenties began auditioning for show opportunities. With years of prior experience singing, recording and touring with Pentecostal gospel groups (often as composer, pianist, and director), "Reverend Lee" dove headlong into a pop/R&B/Broadway singing career. He effortlessly landed leading roles in The Me Nobody Knows, Inner City Blues, Mary Jane and finally, Godspell, where he acquired his "Genesis" name after taking suggestions from the Godspell cast members. "They were jokingly throwing names at me, like Zachariah, Leviticus. Then someone said 'Genesis,' and I said, 'Hey, this is a beginning for me!' So I took it and I've had it ever since." While Genesis took a long break from stage performances, he has never lost his love for telling stories through song. On this new solo CD, it’s obvious that his gospel background doesn’t hesitate to sneak to the foreground in today’s work. Lee wrote or co-wrote five of the nine cuts on The Soul of Lee Genesis. He pours his heart and soul into every tune from the slamming opener, Reachout, which encourages people to do their part to heal the world, to the lover’s laments Forgive and Forget and How Do You Say Goodbye? and his heartfelt Told You So and When You Got Love. The CD also features the Matt Noble/Carol Ann Rowley tune In My Darkest Hour and the beautiful Noble piece, A Simple Act of Faith, plus the Steve Winwood/Will Jennings hit Higher Love and the bluesy More of Your Love from Regine Urbach/Leo Schaff. Lee’s sterling vocals joined by wailing saxophone, strong keyboards, soulful back-up vocals and a stellar guitar, bass and drums make The Soul of Lee Genesis a must-hear on stage or on disc. Genesis kicks off his CD release celebration at Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant & Music Club in Somerville, MA, on January 9. From These Roots . . .

After 65 Years, Preachers’ Son, Lee Genesis, Debuts His Soul

Brooklyn’s Lee Genesis was encouraged by his preacher parents to stand up and sing on soapboxes at the tender age of three. He was hot then, recalls a friend, referring to the natural talent of the then-Lee Antley, and he is smoking now. Lee, a celebrated vocalist in the jazz s e t , h a s performed at many of New Yo rk ’s m o s t celebrated clubs including Trede Heller’s The Top Of The G a t e , Dangerfield’s Mikell’s The Copacabana, Tramps, Fives, Oh Ye Fiddlesticks, Pal Joey’s The African Room and The Improvisation. But the big news is Lee is releasing his very first CD, The Soul of Lee Genesis, at age 65. And he credits his early years “setting up shop on the box” as the primary force that has led him to his dream. “We let the ‘good word’ be told via song on local street corners and on Sunday mornings at Lambert’s Chapel United Holy Church in 1959 by my mother, the Late Dr. Josephine Antley,” says Lee. “My mother was the congregation’s powerful preacher and my father was the brilliant musical director.” His dad had also been one of the

famous Selah Jubilee Singers recorded extensively in the ‘30s and ‘40s and it was he who took the time to train the young Lee in the powerful and charismatic vocal techniques so necessary to preaching the Gospel. Lee lived in Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York and Brownsville. While his dad was in the US Navy, he lived with his mom and maternal grandmother, Grandma Brown, on Fulton Street between Saratoga and Hopkinson Aves. When Dad came home, he moved to Hancock Street between Ralph and Patchen Aves. “I lived on Stanley Avenue, Prospect Place and Hendrix Street, went to school in those neighborhoods, and graduated from Boys H.S. in 1960.” Ordained as a minister at 15 and then trained as an accountant in college, Lee Antley landed a “real” job with the New York Stock Exchange but in his late twenties began auditioning for show opportunities. With years of prior e x p e r i e n c e s i n g i n g , recording and touring with

P e n t e c o s t a l gospel groups ( o f t e n a s c o m p o s e r , p i a n i s t a n d d i r e c t o r ) , “Reverend Lee” dove headlong into a pop/R&B/Broadway s i n g i n g career. He e f fo r t l e s s l y l a n d e d leading roles in The Me Nobody Knows, Inner City Blues,

Dr. Josphine Antley and “Reverend” Lee Antley at age 18

Mary Jane and finally, Godspell, where he acquired his “genesis” name after taking suggestions from the Godspell cast members. “They were jokingly throwing names at me, like Zachariah, Leviticus. Then Someone said ‘Genesis,’ and I said, ‘Hey, this is a beginning for me!” So I took it and I’ve had it ever since.” His unique “gospel” talents graced performances with distinguished jazz artists Red Garland and John Forster (Charles Mingus’ pianist) as well as with Jaki Byard and Cecil Taylor. He opened for Dakota Station and also for Bette Midler and Barry Manilow at the legendary Continental Baths. In addition, Genesis drew rave reviews with Lavern Baker, George Russell’s New York Big Band, Baird Hersey’s Year of the Ear Band, Stanton Davis’ Ghetto Mysticism Band and he rock the New York Coliseum with CITI, the area’s renowned roller disco group. In addition, Genesis drew rave reviews with LaVerne Baker, George Russell's New York Big Band, Baird Hersey's Year of the Ear Band, Stanton Davis' Mysticism Band and he rocked the New York Coliseum with CITI, the area's renowned roller disco group.

The personification of the word 'gospel,' Lee Genesis was born Lee Antley in Brooklyn, NY, the son of preacher parents who encouraged him to stand up and sing on soap boxes at the tender age of three. His dad had also been one of the famous Selah Jubilee Singers recorded extensively in the '30s and '40s and it was he who took the time to train the young Lee in the powerful and charismatic vocal techniques so necessary to preaching the Gospel.

Then someone said 'Genesis,' and I said, 'Hey, this is a beginning for me!' So I took it and I've had it ever since."

While Genesis took a long break from stage performances, he has never lost his love for telling stories through song. On this new solo CD, it's obvious that his gospel background doesn't hesitate to sneak to the foreground in today's work. Lee wrote or co-wrote five of the nine cuts on The Soul of Lee Genesis. He pours his heart and soul into every tune from the slamming opener, Reachout, which encourages people to do their part to heal the

world, to the lover's laments Forgive and Forget and How Do You Say Goodbye? and his heartfelt Told You So and When You Got Love. Lee's sterling vocals joined by wailing saxophone, strong keyboards, soulful back-up vocals and a stellar guitar, bass and drums make The Soul of Lee Genesis a must-hear on stage or on disc.

Genesis kicks off his CD release celebration at Johnny D's Uptown Restaurant & Music Club in Somerville, MA, on January 9.
