THE South African government gave SAA another emergency short-

term loan of about R550 million over the festive period, the Sunday Times has reported.

This was used to fund fuel costs in order to avert the grounding of the troubled state-owned airline, which would have left thousands of local and overseas passengers stranded during December.

Finance minister Pravin Gordhan and public enterprises Minister

Malusi Gigaba last week signed off a guarantee that allowed South African Airways to secure a R550m bank “facility” for fuel and other short term commitments.

Gigaba’s spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete said there was nothing unique about the loan and that airlines all over the world had experienced financial challenges.

If the national carrier is unable to repay the loan over the next three months, it might need to dip into the R5-billion loan guarantee it requested from the Treasury

after it reported a R1.25bn loss for the year ending in March 2012, bringing total losses in the past decade to R14.7 billion.

The government, as SAA’s only shareholder, has given the ailing airline R15 billion worth of financial support to the tune of over the last 10 years.

“SAA is a company in financial distress and the shareholder is involved in its turnaround strategy,” said Public Enterprises spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete. This strategy will involve buying

more fuel-efficient planes.Half of the airline’s board

members resigned in September after it emerged that the company’s request for a R6 billion recapitalisation would not be granted. A few weeks later CEO Siza Mzimela and two senior managers also resigned.

Last year two other local airlines, Velvet Sky and 1time, closed due to rising fuel costs.

Without a R5 million bailout from the government, SAA would have run out of fuel in December, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

by STAFF REPORTERFROM 1 Jan 2013, tuberculosis testing requirements will form part of the visa application process for South Africans and Zimbabweans planning to come to the UK for more than six months, the UK Border Agency has announced.

This follows the UK government’s announcement in May 2012 to introduce tuberculosis testing as a requirement of the visa application process for certain countries. South Africa and Zimbabwe are two of 67 countries, who according to the World Health Organisation have a high incidence of tuberculosis.

Applicants who submit ted an online visa application form and paid the visa application fee online before 31 December 2012 will not need to take a tuberculosis test. Applications submitted and paid for on or after this date will be subject to tuberculosis testing requirements.

You do not need a tuberculosis test if you plan on travelling to the UK for less than six months, for example on business or for tourism.

TB testing is not a new phenomenon, as many South Africans pointed out in response to this piece of news on SA Promo’s facebook page.

Adele Walker wrote, “I came here nine years ago, my children and I had to have this test done and had to have the x-ray’s done at the airport….. not new – also had the HIV test done.”

Manda Petzold confirmed, “September 2008, I also had to do the X-Ray at the airport although I had an entry visa for six months – they suggested when I applied that all South Africans arriving in the UK to stay, should bring a chest X-Ray along and present it together with your documentation.”

Cheryl-Anne Fourie said, “We came in five years ago and all three of us had to have the tuberculosis test done at Heathrow before being allowed to cross over into the UK.”

Others felt it was ridiculous that South Africans with EU passports did not have to do the tests, despite having an equal chance of carrying the illness.

The x-rays mean absolutely nothing. I moved to The Netherlands with a Dutch passport and didn’t need the x-rays. My mom came over with my dad, she didn’t have a Dutch passport, and she had to get x-rays. TB apparently knows if you have an EU passport or not,” wrote Elize Meijer.

LONDON’S MOST POPULAR SOUTH AFRICANBAR AND RESTAURANT

Contemporary STYLE and safari chic serving deliciousSouth African cuisine. All day DINING with a choice ofinspired bistro menus, bar snacks, canapés, pre-theatreand a la carte. Great COCKTAILS, plus a superb winelist, many served by the glass.

How to be more South

African (away from home) in 2013”.

witnessed one idiotic individual sucking on an electronic cigarette. There is help out there people!

But for us, techo-junkies, it’s all the way down the river Styx without a paddle. The very lack of wi-fi, broadband or internet is enough to produce an allergic reaction. Giving up smoking is playgroup in relation to receiving a single word, not even from your mother. I love holidays – I plan them, save for them, get into the Christmas in South Africa spirit, and make sure that I have internet most of the way.

Phase 1 - Tricky. On the great plains of the Free State with vistas that would inspire poetry, I managed to brave three days without contact from the outside world. Part of me relaxed, part

resisted, while part of me secretly climbed trees and teetered on high walls for a signal. I knew this was going to happen and when one knows, plans can be put in place. Besides who really needs to communicate on Christmas day – eh, me! I can do outdoor activities and huge family Christmas dinners, but I really would like to know that life has not passed me by.

Phase 2 - Shock and horror. The B&B

in Sleepy Hollow has no internet. If I could choose a comic character, I would be Wile E Coyote in Road Runner - you know the wolf whose eyes turn to spiralling Catherine wheels awith fire coming out of his ears? The manager speaks of DSTV, alarms, mini bars and I am going ‘excuse me, did I hear right?’

The ‘excuse me’ is drawn out the way a pink lady pulls out her chewing gum, slow and deliberate. The KwaZulu holiday is over, it is day four and I am marooned

in heat and humidity hell. The biggest story of the night is

the gecko staring me down with all intents of falling

on my head. I can see his little heart beating

through his skin. Bleh.

Phase 3. Allez, allez we move to the Big Mother City or rather the quaint, pastoral, bigger than a hamlet, Franschoek. An idyllic cottage, with avec boutique pool, nestled in the vines. I did not dare to ask, and methinks, surely here life is quaint but within keeping of the 21st century.

Oh my word. Repeat this in slow motion. Oh...my...word. Those words are like silver bullets in my heart.

Suddenly the scenery pales as I imagine my JK Rowling stint in cafes along the trendy strip of town.

If one more person tells me to relax and enjoy the solitude, I shall remind myself that I am still too young to die from stress.

Right now I am off to find a signal on the beach.

The OPTIMIST

Arthur Pita: SA choreographer of new musical ‘The Bodyguard’Romantic thriller combining the story of the classic film with the songs of the late Whitney Houston is on stage at the Adelphi

Tell us about the stage version of The Bodyguard. The singing is gorgeous, the dancers are amazing. It’s got such elegance, and the songs are so meaningful because people have grown up with them. And it’s got something a bit different, too, with Whitney Houston’s songs combined with the story of The Bodyguard. It is a play, a thriller and a musical; there’s a lot to be achieved. And it’s obviously very timely.Yes, but the producers had been in talks about it for seven years – it’s not something that came about due to Whitney’s death, as many people think. I first read the script over a year ago, and Whitney had already given the project her blessing. And then she died, and in a weird way that’s given the whole piece a different power. I also think the story is slightly more relevant now, in the days of the internet. We hear about cyber-stalking all the time, so the storyline resonates. How did you get involved? The director gave me the script and asked if I wanted to to do it. It’s so strange – about a year earlier the film was on TV and I just caught the end of it, but it looked exciting so I bought the DVD that weekend. Then I completely forgot about it until I got the script and rooted it out, so in a weird way I almost had it in my head a year

before. That felt really meaningful. How does it feel to be involved? It feels huge! But you can’t be overwhelmed – you just have to get on top and put your whole spirit into it. What has been your favourite song to work with?A musical is only as good as its music and because the music is so good it’s such a treat.‘Queen of the Night’ is a great song, and a gift to choreograph. There’s 12 dancers on stage plus the leading lady, and I have to make them all move! I have to be on the ball but then I talk to others, like the designer and the music department, and we all collaborate. Musical theatre is really one massive collaboration. What does The Bodyguard mean to you as a South African? What I love so much is the relationship between a white man and a black woman, where there’s no issue about race. That’s such an amazing message. When the film came out in 1992 we were just coming out of apartheid, and we were like ‘that’s fantastic’! I love that no-one makes any fuss about it – that’s just the way it is, and the way it should be. It’s a fantastic representation of what love is, and the combination of races makes it even more interesting. Was the film significant in SA?It would be interesting to research

by ELIZABETH GLANVILLE ARTHUR Pita is the London-based, South African-born choreographer of upcoming West End musical The Bodyguard, which runs until April at the Adelphi Theatre on the Strand.

Arthur studied dance in Johannesburg and came to London in 1991, where he gained a masters degree at London Contemporary Dance School. He recently directed and choreographed The Metamorphosis for which he won the 2012 South Bank Award and was nominated for an Olivier.

We chatted to Arthur about his current project.

that. I mean, those lines had already been crossed, but if anything it would have done good. I remember thinking it was unusual because you don’t see an interracial relationship on that level in many films. I love that she’s a powerful black woman; the image of a black woman in her mansion with her entourage, like in ‘Queen of the Night’, is empowering.

Is this what you’ve always wanted to do?

Completely. John Travolta in Grease was my inspiration! I studied ballet and contemporary dance in Johannesburg, and loved

it so much I came to London to study further. I always wanted to choreograph – when I was young I was always dressing up my cousins, doing magic shows and making up dances. I feel a bit like I’ve never come out of that, I’m just doing it at a different level!

Do you still feel South African?I’ve been here since 1991 but

my family are still in Jo’burg, although we’re Portuguese by descent. Where you come from is always important, but in my heart I’m a Londoner. Which is different to feeling English. But there is an inherent South African spirit in me, as well as Portuguese.

by JENNI SMOUT

Why did you come to the UK?I came to the UK to do my PhD at Cambridge University. I had been doing my BA at Wits in History and Anthropology and my supervisor, John Blacking, was a Brit and suggested I went there. I couldn’t be bothered to go to America, so it was the path of least resistance, as the UK was pretty familiar to South Africans at the time.

How often do you return to South Africa?Pretty regularly. I left almost exactly 50 years ago, but knew I wanted to do my fieldwork in Southern Africa so I returned for that. In the 90′s I spent my summers teaching at universities all over SA. I married a South African and we thought about returning there after I retired, but our family are based here so we decided not to.

I still feel very South African. Although now when I visit the country seems to have changed. I still have many friends and relatives there but I feel less at home. I think that’s a common exile’s experience – the image of a country changes as you do.

Do you miss SA?Yes, especially the weather this time of year! But also the warmth of the people and the wide variety of landscapes you find there.

What to like about living in London? There are obvious things; the theatres, museums, the shops. But you really become attached to your village of a suburb – I’ve been living in Muswell Hill for 25 years now – it’s convenient, peaceful, and close to my golf club.

How did you discover anthropology? It was through my aunt Hilda [Kuper, a famous anthropologist]. When I was 18 we drove to Swaziland to visit the Queen’s [Ntombi] household. When we arrived she

went to the female quarters when I was left at the campfire talking to the men. There was a young prince there [current King, Mswati III] who spoke perfect English, having been educated in a private school in the UK. We began talking and he asked me if I believed in witchcraft, then looked at me and said ‘there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy’. And I thought this is incredible, here I am, with a Swazi prince is using Hamlet to support the idea of witchcraft.

Also, growing up under apartheid was like growing up with an iron curtain – there was an incredible curiosity into the other side.

You’ve written some notable books. Do you have a favourite?Probably my most recent, although I don’t like the title. My publisher chose it, because they wanted to keep it in the style of Jane Austen’s novels – Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and so on. But I have a habit of

re-writing my books. My

book on the

history of anthropology [Anthropology and Anthropologists] I’m working on the 4th edition now, and I rewrote it for the 2nd edition and then again for the 3rd! I rewrote parts of The Invention of Primitive Society and titled it The Reinvention of Primitive Society. But it’s awful, you go back over your work and think god why did I write it like that?

Are you working on anything at the moment?I’m currently writing up a talk I did at Oxford on anthropology

and the Bible for a couple of journals. I’m also thinking of writing a memoir, but I can’t think who would want to read it – my publisher agrees with me.Why did you come to the UK?I came to the UK to do my PhD at Cambridge University. I had been doing my BA at Wits in History and Anthropology and my supervisor, John Blacking, was a Brit and suggested I went there. I couldn’t be bothered to go to America, so it was the path of least resistance, as the UK was pretty familiar to South Africans at the time.

South Africa is the launch pad for Tata Group’s African adventureby ZOHA TAPIATHE $83.3bn Tata Group’s foreign direct investment projects in Africa grew 27 percent from 2010 to 2011, representing an annual increase of around 20 percent since 2007.

Other Indian business groups – such as the Aditya Birla Group, Vedanta and the Mahindras – have entered the continent to explore for natural resources, while Tata has diversified into automotive, IT and communications, energy, chemicals and business consultancy sectors.

The Tata Group initially entered Africa in 1977, to market Tata Motors vehicles in Zambia. The company set up its headquarters for African operations in Johannesburg in 1994, and in the last 20 years has invested $576m in different projects across the continent. The slowdown of other international markets has renewed its interest in Africa.

Neotel expanding markets in AfricaOne of the most strategic areas of Tata’s African business is its South African internet and telecoms subsidiary Neotel, acquired in 2007. “In terms of number of customers, our business customers grew 92 percent year-on-year and our retail customers grew 100

percent,” according to Neotel managing director Sunil Joshi.

“The market we chose to address on the consumer side was fixed wireless, which replaces the traditional home phone with a fixed wireless solution for homes and offices. We had 50,000 customers [in 2011] and we reached 100,000 [last] year.”

Neotel has laid 11,000km of fibre optic cables across the continent and is in talks with the SA government to allow it to invest in areas where there is no existing infrastructure. Currently the total fixed communication market in South Africa is worth a total of R44bn (US$5.2bn) and Neotel has five percent of that market share.

Talking about expansion plans, Joshi said, “Our capital expenditure for last year was in the range of R500m. In this fiscal year we have a similar capital expenditure plan. And, 80 percent of that capital will be used to augment our fibre footprint and 20 percent of that will be used for automation and growing efficiencies through IT. So we are certainly expanding.”

“We are aiming to expand our telepresence footprint to Cape Town and Durban later this year. We have two data centres and they have room for expansion, and as the requirement continues to grow

we will continue to expand our data centres.”

Tata’s other Southern African operationsTata Motors assembly plantsAs India’s largest truck and bus maker, Tata Motors has increased production capacity in its assembly plant in Rosslyn, South Africa to export trucks.Tata’s consultancy arm in AfricaTata Strategic Management Group is planning on making an entry into the South African, Kenyan, Nigerian and Zambian markets though its sister company Tata International, which is based in Johannesburg.

Tata, one the world’s largest multinationals, sees South Africa as the gateway to the continent

by STAFF REPORTER A recent report by Reuters indicates that cash-rich Gulf Arab Companies are increasing their investments in Africa.

There has been a fivefold increase in trade between Africa and the Middle East in the last decade, currently estimated to be in the region of US$49bn annually. And according to Reuters these investment are increasingly focused on the Sub-Saharan region.

Government debts in the US and Eurozone countries are one major reason for this shift in focus. As is Africa’s rapid economic growth and the emergence of a new middle class hungry for consumer items and housing.

Another factor that make Africa attractive to Gulf investors is the availability of arable land, something which is scarce in the Middle East. Africa’s economic boom also coincides with high oil prices which have given Middle

Eastern countries extra liquidity.“I can see Gulf investors

warming up to Africa. Any opportunity there grabs their attention,” said Ahmed Heikal, chairman of Citadel Capital (CCAP.CA), one of the Middle East’s largest private equity firms with US$9.5bn of assets under management.

“Africa is becoming more interesting because of the natural resources it has, its demographics and better governance.”

Gulf states look to invest in African countries

Being a consulting firm, there are a lot of opportunities in Africa as more companies look to improve their operational performance, beef up their supply chain and logistics, improve their sourcing and sharpen organisational effectiveness.Shipping iron ore under Tata SteelTata Steel, another major part of the Tata empire, has started shipping iron ore from Mozambique in order to solve the raw material problems faced in its European office – Tata Steel Europe. In Europe, Tata Steel is facing a slowdown in growth as demand has fallen and input costs have increased.Tata Power’s joint venture with Exxaro ResourcesTata Power has set up a 50:50 joint venture with Exxaro Resources,

South Africa’s second largest coal producer. Their joint venture, Cennergi, will develop power generation projects in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.

Tata Power has also been selected as the preferred bidder for the 139MW Amakhala wind farm project and the 95MW Tsitsikamma wind farm project by the Department of Energy, South Africa.Exporting coffee from South AfricaTata Global Beverages, which sells Joekels brand of coffee in South Africa, intends to expand within the continent. It has built a soluble coffee processing factory in Jinja, Uganda, to export it to markets in East Europe, Scandinavia and China.

Q : I am a South African citizen, now settled in the UK, and

about to have a baby. My mother now wants to visit more frequently and I was hoping that you could tell me more about the long-term visit visa. For how long is this visa valid, and for how long will she be able to visit us on every occasion?

A : There are long-term visit visas available for 1, 2, 5

or 10 years. The application fee for these visas is higher than for the short-term visit visas, but obviously beneficial as she would not need to apply for a visa every time she wants to visit, provided that the visa is still valid.

If she is successful in her application, she will be allowed unlimited entry into the UK, whilst the visa is valid, but only for a maximum of 6 months per visit. Alternatively, short periods of time not exceeding 6 months per year.

In her application considerations

by the UK Home Office will include whether she can show a frequent and sustained need to come to the UK – such as the fact that you are based in the UK, whether she will be able to support herself without access to UK public funds and whether she intends to leave the UK at the end of each visit.

Our South African affiliate office will be able to assist with her application.

Please contact our offices for further information. JP Breytenbach Director of Breytenbachs Immigration Consultants Limited www.bic-immigration.com or [email protected]

by MATTHEW CRIDGEBETWEEN 31 December 2012 and 7 January 2013 one Great British Pound fetched between R13.69 and R13.82 South African Rands.

One Euro fetched between R11.16 and R11.21 South African Rands during the same period.

After a fairly good fortnight at the end of 2012, the Rand gave up some of its gains in quiet holiday trade coming into 2013. It had gained some good ground on major currencies, with the US “fiscal cliff” problem being solved at the 11th hour, but had fallen

back in line with other emerging market currencies.

The Rand started to slide further at the end of last week as it tracked the weakening Euro. The Euro, the Rand’s biggest trading partner, fell to a three week low against the USD after the US Federal Reserve Bank cautioned against buying European government bonds.

“The Fed minutes came out and... the Euro had a bad night. We therefore are under a bit of pressure,” said Jim Bryson, a currency trader at Rand Merchant Bank (News24.com).

After a disappointing start to

2013, the Rand trading level was expected to return back to some normality as the holidays come to an end and investors return to their trading desks.

“We are also still experiencing some very thin trading levels in the market‚ so relatively small moves will sway the rand in any direction. We are expecting to return to normal levels by next week‚ once the holidays are over‚” said Ockert Van Niekerk, head of trading at PSG.

by JEREMY BORTZTHE Proteas began the new year in emphatic fashion, defeating the Black Caps by an innings and 27 runs inside three days in the first Test match at Sahara Newlands in Cape Town.

The win stretched the Proteas’ unbeaten Test run to 11 with their last defeat coming against Sri Lanka in the 2011 Boxing Day Test match at Kingsmead in Durban, not one of South Africa’s happiest cricketing hunting grounds.

The Black Caps won the toss and were ruing their decision to bat first before drinks were taken on the first morning. Vernon Philander was in sublime form on his home ground, picking up five wickets in only 26 deliveries (the third-fastest five-wicket haul in Test match history) to end with remarkable figures of 6-3-7-5.

Fellow fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Morné Morkel chipped in with two and three wickets respectively as the visitors were skittled out for just 45 in only 19.2 overs, their shortest Test innings ever.

With his first wicket of the morning, a beautiful out-swinging yorker to Doug Bracewell, Steyn became the fourth South African bowler to take 300 Test wickets after Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini. Steyn reached the milestone in his 61st Test, a record bettered only by Australian quick Dennis Lillee (56 Tests) and Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (58 Tests). Philander joined West Indian Malcolm Marshall and New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee, who also achieved this feat in their 61st Tests.

In response, the Proteas looked set for a huge first innings total when they finished day one on 252 for 3. However they lost five wickets for 92 runs the next day and declared eight down on 347.

Opener Alviro Petersen top-scored with 106, his fifth Test hundred, and was ably supported by AB de Villiers who made 67. Hashim Amla was out for 66 and Jacques Kallis also contributed 60.

With his 20th run, Kallis became only the fourth batsman in history

to score 13,000 Test runs, joining an elite club of Sachin Tendulkar (15, 645), Ricky Ponting (13,378) and Rahul Dravid (13,288). With both Dravid and Ponting now retired, Kallis will in all likehood be the world’s second highest Test run-getter before the year is out.

New Zealand fought back well and battled bravely in their second innings, with Dean Brownlie scoring his maiden Test century, but they were left with too much to do after that first morning and they were eventually all out for 275 to

give the Proteas a commanding victory.

Captain Graeme Smith was very pleased with the way the team performed. “We wanted to build on the momentum we created in 2012 and it’s been the perfect way to start our summer at home.”

“We bowled superbly in both new-ball spells, even in the first and second innings. We were excellent in terms of the areas we hit and the intensity with which we started.”

Smith also believes the team has

matured over the past few months. “There is resilience in the squad. We’ve been under big pressure. We’ve fought back from tough positions and we’ve worked our backsides off to get back into games. Then, when we’ve had that opportunity, we’ve driven a bus through the door.”

The band will bring in the second Test which begins at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth this Friday, and the Proteas will be looking to continue from where they left off at Newlands.

Proteas begin the new year with commanding victory

SPORT8 January – 14 January 2013 NEWS FOR GLOBAL SOUTH AFRICANS www.thesouthafrican.com

South Africa’s leading mountain biker killed in taxi hit-and-run accidentBURRY: GONE TOO SOON

by STAFF REPORTER

SOUTH Africa’s leading mountain biker Burry Stander was killed last Thursday in

a road accident during a collision with a taxi while training near his home in Shelley Beach on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The taxi driver will be charged with culpable homicide. An eyewitness at the scene said the driver was in shock and “seemed like he did not know what to do. He told me it was his bad luck and said that he had not seen the cyclist and did not know how the accident happened,” said the witness.

Stander was a two-time Olympian, having competed in Beijing in 2008 and in London last year, where he finished a brave fifth in the thrilling cross-country race. He also won the world Under-23 title in 2009.

It is the second such recent tragedy in South Africa involving

a high-profile rider. Two years ago in January, another leading South African cyclist, Carla Swart, died when she was hit by a truck while training in the Free State.

Gideon Sam, the president of national Olympic governing body Sascoc said, “This is indeed terrible news to start 2013 with. Burry was the epitome of an Olympic athlete – talented, ultra-competitive but at the same time extremely humble and a true gentleman.

“Sascoc, the cycling fraternity, and the entire South African sporting community mourns his passing and sends our prayers to his wife and family. I’m totally shattered because athletes of Burry’s calibre are not easily replaced. It’s an enormous loss to the cycling family. I’ve said this time and again, but it is really time to work even harder at protecting both our runners and cyclists who

used the roads daily to do their training.”

The 25-year-old married fellow 2008 Beijing Olympian Cherise Stander (nee Taylor) in May last year, two months before the Olympic Games.

Stander was a feared rider on the global circuit having won events in all corners of the globe. He was a three-time South African mountain bike champion as well as a winner of the gruelling Cape Epic multi-stage off-road event. As such, Stander was seen in South Africa as someone who raised the profile of the sport in the country and proved that a South African can indeed be a world-beater on the mountain biking circuit.

Stander’s funeral will take place on Thursday.
