    EVERYDAY HEROES

    Khulisa a story o hope

Lesley Ann van Selm believes that everyone deserves a

second chance. And every day she works to make sure

that oenders have the opportunity to take a second

chance on lie. This gentle woman may be idealistic,

but she has used her ideals to change the reality o

    those around her.

Lesley named her organisation Khulisa (a Zulu word

meaning endorse growth) because unlocking human

potential is what her organisations programmes are

all about. Khulisa works in schools, communities and

correctional acilities to promote education, rehabilitation

and reconciliation in an eort to combat crime.

What started out as an interactive Arican storytelling

project aimed at instilling morals in oenders has

grown into an eective NGO that touches thousands

o lives every day. Khulisa reaches 25 000 people a

year directly. But because it is a peer-based system it

reaches an additional 125 000 people.

Lesley knows that there is a solution to crime, because

every day she works with people who have broken

out o the cycle o crime and hopelessness. One o

them, a ormer armed robber and now a successul

businessman, says Lesley Ann is the mother o (his)

soul because she motivated him to nd a positive

vision or his lie at a time when he was depressed.

By giving oenders the hope o a second chance

Khulisa has a rehabilitation success rate o between

70% and 80%. In stark contrast to the 80%-90% relapse

    rate or released oenders.

Smart thinking and the power o storytelling has

allowed Lesley Ann van Selm to make a positive

dierence in the lives o individuals and communities.

While others are content to complain about crime or

give up hope, Lesley Ann ound a way to combat crime

without ghting it, her inspiration, the ordinary people

    she works with every day.

The miracle o nutrition just add water

In the 1990s Basil Kransdor was just an ordinary

industrial chemist. Then his wie came to him with a

problem. How do you ensure that people aected by

HIV/AIDS and poverty get the nutrition they need?

His wies volunteer work or CARE (Community AIDS

Response) vividly demonstrated to Basil how important

nutrition was in ghting a disease that was decimating

    communities throughout Arica.

So he set out to nd a solution because he accepts, it

is up to each one o us to create the South Arica we

want to live in. He learned all he could about nutrition

and ood supplements. He picked the brains o

acknowledged experts, examined all that was available

locally and internationally. Eventually he discovered an

American technology that would allow him to provide

supplementation in an easy to absorb orm.

The technology was very expensive, but he managed

to get around that hurdle too. He ormulated his

product, ePap, and started producing it in a actory

    in Klerksdorp.

This miracle ood is a pre-cooked meal packed with

28 nutrients in a bio available orm. For between

R1 and R2 a day, a person gets the nutritional equivalent

o a 10-course meal in one easy to prepare serving

just add water. Basil passionately believes that good

nutrition is the basis o a good healthcare system and

    a vibrant economy.

His product may not cure disease but it has helped

people climb rom their deathbeds and become ully

unctioning members o their communities. Basil

calls this the 5-day ePap eect. By delivering the

supplement in ood orm Basil manages to eed people

    and make the nutrients aordable.

Through urther innovation in terms o packaging

and distribution Basil has made his product available

to schools, hospitals, crches and eeding schemes

throughout Arica. 500 000 Meal portions a month are

sold, primarily through a community based distribution

scheme, ensuring that members o the community

earn prots rom this miracle ood.

Basil is a true everyday hero. A social problem inspired

him to use the worlds best available technology and local

brain-power to come up with a unique and eective

solution. Making a dierence is what he is all about.

Everyday heroes are people who take heroic action in response to everyday problems. They do a little each day to change their world and make South

Arica a better place. Here are their stories; perhaps t hey will inspire you to change the world too. We hope so, thats why weve let some space or you to

    explore your ideas.

The SOUL oundation keeping it clean

By day Kim Keiser concerned hersel with abric and hemlines. At night, like all o us, she dreamed. But

one night was dierent rom all the others. On this night in December 1997 she dreamed about a South

Arica united by a common mission: cleaning up the environment.

So Kim being Kim she eventually gave-up her thriving ashion design business to ound an organisation

called Save Our Universal Land (SOUL). The organisations rst project was to clean up part o the Jukskei

River (pronounced Yickskay) that fowed through Alexandra Township.

The river that divided this hopelessly overcrowded township, was ecologically dead, its bacteria

concentration more than 40 000 times above sae levels. Inormal settlements along its banks used it

as a dumping ground or every kind o human waste. Kim clearly remembers her rst encounter withAlexandras inamous fying toilets. As the stinky missile few by her head on the way into the river, she

renamed the Jukskei, the Yuck Skei. Her work changed all o that.

Months ahead o schedule SOUL managed to clean up 48 km o river, and remove 12 000 tons o solid

waste that had choked the riv er. But much to Kims satisaction the Jukskei was not the only beneciary o

the project. Ten small businesses dedicated to recycling waste were created and work provided or 144

people who had never beore had a job.

That was just the beginning. SOUL lobbied businesses to und the clean up o the waterway rom the

source o pollution at Ellis Park, all the way to Bruma Lake. At the same time ensuring that members o the

community were able to set-up small eco businesses and benet through recognized on the job training.

Ten years on and Kim (through the SOUL oundation) is still li ving the dream o uniting people on a mission

to save the planet. As a local authority on urban river clean-up and integrated waste management Kim

has been invited to replicate her success all over Ari ca. She is working with strategic thinkers rom around

the world to design a global water and sanitation initiative that will restore rivers rom source to sea.

Spurred on by a dream Kim continues to change her lie and the lives o hundreds o others. She is an

everyday hero and ambassador o the South Arican spirit.

The result o the Jukskeis rst

cleanup was one o my proudest

    moments ...Up to ten small

    businesses were created (and)

almost hal o the budget was paid

out in wages to people who had

    Inspiring random acts o kindness

As your mom might say there is nothing unny

about good old ashioned values. So the countrys

unniest comics accompanied by lm crews took

to the streets o Joburg in an eort to instil good

values in the South Arican public. The unny

to do just that with its rst Arican Fashion Week.

Models will stroll down the catwalks at the Sandton

end with the Arican Fashion Awards.

This event is yet another showcase organised by

AFI, who run the continents most infuential ashion

    weeks. Spearheaded by respected businesswoman

    and Chairperson, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.

AFI was created to acilitate business success
