These are short, intensive, English courses for students wishing to brush up their general English skills before their next regular General English course Autumn 2016 intake. The following courses are on offer this summer:

1 Advanced General English

Students enrolling in Advanced General English should possess a solid English foundation in order to cope with challenging (upper intermediate to advanced) materials and the pursuit of advanced target language skills.

2 Intensive English Refresher

Intensive English Refresher is suitable for those students who have completed SPACE Foundation / Introductory/ Intermediate Certificate in General English programme. SPACE teachers would very much like to help students maintain and enhance their English proficiency so their skills will not get “rusty” during the summer break!

The Advanced General English course is suitable for students who have successfully completed the SPACE Diploma in General English programme. This 60-hour course helps them consolidate their English language skills for effective communication, particularly in informal and social contexts.

This advanced level English course covers a variety of topics: advanced grammar (structures to show contrast or emphasis), pronunciation (use of stress and intonation in discussion), idiomatic vocabulary (proverbs, common sayings), reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and also ways to avoid common "problematic" aspects in speaking and writing. Students are also guided through e-learning resources aimed at helping them put in more language practice in addition to class contact time.

Successful completion of the Advanced General English course leads to a Statement of Attendance.

Entry Requirements Holders of a Diploma in General English* awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE, or equivalent.

* Note that students currently enrolled in and about to complete the Diploma in General English are also eligible to register for this course.

Applicants can enrol at any SPACE counter by bringing along these documents: 1 a completed course application form (SF 26), with fee payment; and 2 a copy of your course receipt.

Its aim is to help you express yourself coherently in writing by providing you with examples of academic writing and practice materials. You will learn such essentials as: planning before you write; organising your ideas; developing your ideas;

3. When the processing and consideration of all the examination results and the applications have been completed: (a) the application papers of unsuccessful candidates will be destroyed; and (b) the application papers of successful candidates will serve as part of the applicants’ official student records and will be handled by HKU SPACE staff.

4. The School will send urgent messages to students via Short Message Services (SMS) and supplement by other means such as email (if the need arises). It is therefore important that the mobile phone and email address that the applicant provides are accurate.

5. Under the provisions of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, applicants have the right to request the School to ascertain whether it holds your personal data, to be given a copy, and to apply for correction of the data, if deemed incorrect. Applications for access to personal data should be made by using a special request form and on payment of a fee. Such applications for access of information should be addressed to the Data Protection Officer, HKU SPACE. For general requests of personal data amendment, please fill out the “Application Form for Personal Data Amendment” and submit it to HKU SPACE.

1. Online Enrolment

Apply online by clicking the icon (found on the top left hand corner of the course webpage below the course title). Follow the instructions, select your preferred session, submit application and make payment.

Complete the SPACE General English Entrance Examination Application Form found overleaf (the form is also downloadable from the entrance exam webpage). Either take or post the completed form, along with the appropriate processing fee, to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres.
