The SparkPlug Oregon State UMCI - October 2019

International Rep!

I thought I would just bundle all of my thoughts this time in this note, saves our editor from working so hard. Well, unfortunately I have been under the weather; the doctors are trying to keep my heart running smoothly so they’re readjusting my medicine a lot of the time. Somedays I feel fine, the next dizzy and no energy so kind of bummed out.

I am pretty disappointed that I didn’t make the Oregon State Rally. Then, last weekend I missed the Douglas campout which was an IBMC and UMCI function. I spoke to Ben, he said the Oregon State Rally had good attendance, but was a little down which seems to be a trend. The International was down as well.

Gordon and Jan Dale said 35 people attended the Douglas campout, which I thought was great. Weather was nice, not quite as cold as last year so no electric blankets were purchased this year. I told myself at the beginning of the year, I would attend both of these rallies, but it was not to be.

I have been thinking as usual about UMCI. I take being a rep at any level very seriously. So, the de-cline in membership and few new members takes its toll on me. I worry too much about the club. Every meeting or rally it is the same conversation and it usually ends up with no answer as how to attract new members.

So I took another approach and looked at the sale of touring bikes, Honda and Harley Davidson. I spoke with Rob in Quincy on how many touring bikes he sold and was stocking and the answer was pretty depressing. He had one Goldwing on the floor for a good 6 months at that time. He said that he had not sold any as of this year and that the demand was way down. Same thing at Walla Walla Honda didn’t have one on the floor and had sold one so far this year.

Harley in Spokane and Tri-cities both said touring bike sales were down as well. So does that mean that our type of member just is not getting the larger bikes so that is why we are not getting new members???. I really can’t answer that, but on Facebook, I always see this motorcycle touring group and they look like they’re pretty good size. I’m trying to get ahold of them to see if they would be interested in visiting. That might be a good thing for both clubs.

I’m hoping that all of you will rush your registrations into Anne and Linda for the 2020 International since it is in Canada this year. It’s imperative to register early so they can secure meals and camping space requirements to meet the demand. Remember, Canadian Funds, please.

As you are out and about riding please wear your vest displaying the UMCI logo. It does draw com-ments. We’ve gained a couple of new riders because they inquired about our group, as they were looking for new riding companions. Word of Mouth is really good advertising. Ride Safe Ride lots and most of all have a ton of fun.

October 2019 Rep’s Ramblings

So, just got back from our Oregon State Rally at Tygh Valley. I got up Thursday morning (29th) and it was cloudy 69 degrees., and apparently. Hooked up the Lil B trailer and headed out. It started raining pretty hard about Welches. My sis-ter Mary Nordby was already there when I arrived, about 11:00. It continued raining off & on the rest of the afternoon, until about 4:00. We drive into Rufus for a steak dinner. Which was pretty good! A few more had arrived while we were off to dinner. It got up to 85 degrees but cooled off to about 56 for comfortable overnight temperature. Friday was a really nice day, got up to about 89. More folks arrived throughout the day. We had Camp Chili for dinner, with 33 campers and Denise & Bernice and Joanne from The Dalles dropping in. John & Yvonne Troutman also dropped by on their (new to them) Harley. Yvonne works with me at Pioneer Design Group. It was good to have them visit. Saturday and Sunday were more nice warm days. Folks went on various day rides… We had Bike Stew Saturday and Pot Luck Sunday. We did 50/50 each night, several folks, other than me, won. We had a total of 13 day-droppers and 33 campers for the weekend. Overall, I would say it was a successful Rally, and hope all had a good time. So, this is how Skinny Dick spends his time at Rallies!

Monday morning was nice clear blue sky and a cool 56 degrees. It was packing-up time, and 9 of us had breakfast at Molly B’s on our way out!!!

NOTE: Tygh Valley Campers – If you are missing a gray Coleman camp chair, I have it. I had work activity that kept me from attending the Governor’s Motorcycle Safety Committee. So, nothing new to report.

Governor’s GAC Motorcycle Safety Not much to report from the Safety Committee. The only motorcycle related Bill passed by the State Legislature has been SB 810 (Vulnerable Users) safety measures. As reported back in April, when introduced, this bill modifies the defi-nition of Vulnerable Users of public ways, to in-clude persons operating or riding on mopeds or motorcycles. So, now, a driver involved in an ac-cident with a moped or motorcycle can be subject o additional penalties, such as hours of community service, fines or more, depending upon if the driv-er is determined to be careless or negligent in causing the accident. Subscription/Registration Form Please see the Subscription /Registration form, if you want to continue to receive the newsletter by regular mail. October 2019 Metro News (Milwaukie, Oregon City & Portland) – Ben Altman Hope all are doing well, as this year is winding down!!! Aug 24: It was off to Elmer’s this morning. There were only 4 of us there. Aug 31: This was a 5th Saturday this month, but also the Tygh Valley State Rally, see my report under State Rep’s Ramblings... September 7: This morning it was cloudy, dry & 65 degrees, as I headed to Oregon City for the breakfast at Wichita Grill. We had 11 attending this morning, with 2 bikes! September 14: Another cloudy, dry morning, and only 59 degrees morning for the run to the Wichita Grill. This morning we had 11 again, only 1 bike.

In the afternoon, Phil Spor & I ran up to Castle Rock for the season finale Flat Track motorcycle races. Gee the last time I was at these races, was a National Meet, at the old track, which got wiped out when Mt. St. Helens blew. That was back when Dick Mann, Dave Aldana, Mert Lawell, Jim Rice, Gary Nixon, etc. were the top national riders. That was mid-70s, a while back.

This was just a Northwest Regional event, but fun to watch anyway. They didn’t have a program so it was a challenge to figure out the classes, of which there must have been 15 or more. Some good racing, with a wide variety of talent… There were 4 crashes, two of which riders were hauled off in an ambulance. The 4th crash, was

right after an ambulance just left, and on the start-ing lap of the 50- class main. Three riders went down, they all got up, but the track was informed that there were no more emergency vehicles avail-able, so they had to shut down the racing. By then it was 10:30 PM, and threatening rain, so the 500 class didn’t finish their race, and the Pro-Main event never got started. Oh well, had a good time, and plan to go back next year… Found out on the way home there was a big wreck on an overpass (I-5) a few mile south, which was probably why there were no ambulances available. I would have some photos, but seems as I left my phone on the table at home, oops. September 21: So this morning was dry and a cool 55 degrees for the drive to the Vancouver break-fast. We had 5 attending this morning. CZ rode over to the Hermiston breakfast, with the folks from The Dalles. September 28: Elmer’s is up next.
