February is Full By: Amanda Alley
February has a few different holidays or special recognition. We have
Valentine’s Day as a holiday, and Black History Month as special recognition
and these are just two examples. The following is a list of February happenings:
American Heart Month
Valentine’s Day
An Affair to Remember Month
Black History Month
Canned Food Month
Creative Romance Month
Great American Pie Month
National Cherry Month
National Children’s Dental Health Month
National Grapefruit Month
National Weddings Month
I myself cannot pinpoint a favorite activity. There is so much to learn when it
comes to different celebrations during this month. Even though we should learn about
them all year long, especially when it comes to caring for your heart. Many of us don’t
take care of this valuable organ so we need to learn how. Why not learn during the
month of love. We guard our hearts when it comes to people, but not when it comes to
good nutrition. You are not too young or old to think about your and change your health
habits. I sure your children, family, or spouse would love to have you around longer.
Take the time to learn about some of these recognitions this month. Try to
learn something new, or learn more about one you are familiar with. Expand your mind
to new ideas and points of view. It’s through knowledge that we grow.
Before I forget, I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s
Day. Search out new and unique gift ideas for the love of your life.
My favorite unique gift from my husband was a Message in a Bottle.
There are two companies that sell these on-line and you can
customize your gift. Check them out.

SPC Rachel Medina
My name is SPC Rachel Medina. I grew
up on the southwest side of Chicago. I started
dating my husband Michael my sophomore year
of high school and we were married in May,
2003. We have 2 daughters together, Taylor and
Lily. I graduated from Northwestern Business
College in 2006, with my Associates Degree and
Paralegal Certificate. I worked as a Domestic
Relations and Personal Injury paralegal for 5
years until I was laid off in March of 2009.
I joined the Army in April of 2012, at the
age of 32, and chose 88L watercraft engineer as
my MOS. I was tired of working behind a desk
and wanted to do something more hands on and
learn a new career. I came to 97th
in October of
2012, and was assigned to LCU 2023, in April,
2013. Since being assigned to the U-23, I have
learned so much about the Watercraft field, the
LCU and all of it's different systems. I enjoy
working on the LCU and looking forward to
going on my first big mission down south to see
some new exciting places and becoming more
knowledgeable on the different components and
systems of the LCU.
As for the future I look forward to long
career in the Army and continuing to become
more knowledgeable of Army vessels.

Black History Month
Origins of Black History Month
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.
In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."
Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The 2013 theme, At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington, marks the 150th and 50th anniversaries of two pivotal events in African-American history.
