The Spirit of Kinhaven Fall 2009 Kinhaven–Summer 2009 by Nancy Bidlack, Director One year ago it was anyone’s guess what the impact of an injured economy would be on a valued non-profit such as Kinhaven. It was equally challenging for the families of our talented musicians to fantasize about a summer of miraculous music making. To fast forward through a very tough year of recruit- ment and finding auxiliary funding, 2009 emerged as a very special summer. Many Kinhaven friends stepped up to the plate and our Annual Fund kept pace with our needs. We enrolled sixty-two new students in Senior Session, a record, and our level of expertise met with no compromise. Junior Session, in some ways the jewel in our crown, proceeded with little awareness of the crumbling conditions around us. Though tough to define, one of the unusual outcomes of this summer was the uncanny match of student and place. In the throes of competition for both students and diminishing dollars, our terrific students embraced the personality of Kinhaven immediately. The kids who needed to be at KMS somehow found their way there. At Senior Session we again brought an array of con- ductors to the podium. The season began with Ankush Bahl conducting Sibelius Second. Larry Loh presented the difficult Symphonic Metamorphosis of Hindemith, and James Sinclair, the world authority on Charles Ives, conducted Three Places in New England. One of our recent traditions, bringing Jerry back to the orchestra, yielded a rousing Tchaikovsky Sixth Symphony. To end the summer, a returning favorite, Jeffrey Domoto, brought the Debussy Nocturnes and the Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz to a thrilling climax. With our guest conductor program well established, we hope to bring in well-known artists for clinics and master classes. Keep an eye on our website for that announce- ment, and while you are there, you can peruse many new pictures, new Kinhaven info, and the opportunity to do- nate to either our Annual Fund or the Capital Fund. The Annual Fund assures us of adequate monies for financial aid and the Capital Fund is looking for matching income to complete our student housing. Each fund welcomes your participation. Each program, the Chamber Music Workshop, the Piano Workshop, Senior Session and Junior Session met our ea- ger expectations. This should all bode well for 2010!

The Spirit of KinhavenFall 2009

Kinhaven–Summer 2009by Nancy Bidlack, Director

One year ago it was anyone’s guess what the impact of an injured economy would be on a valued non-profit such as Kinhaven. It was equally challenging for the families of our talented musicians to fantasize about a summer of miraculous music making.

To fast forward through a very tough year of recruit-ment and finding auxiliary funding, 2009 emerged as a very special summer.

At Senior Session we again brought an array of con-ductors to the podium.

Keep an eye on our website for that announce-ment, and while you are there, you can peruse many new pictures, new Kinhaven info, and the opportunity to do-nate to either our Annual Fund or the Capital Fund. The Annual Fund assures us of adequate monies for financial aid and the Capital Fund is looking for matching income to complete our student housing. Each fund welcomes your participation.

Orton Family Celebration

Dedicatory Address Given at Kinhaven on Saturday Morning, July 18, 2009

by Jerry T. Bidlack, Director Emeritus

Fifty-seven year ago in 1952, David and Dorothy Dushkin founded Kinhaven Music School here in Weston, Vermont. It was David Dushkin’s creativity, humanity, and educational dream that is still intact in today’s Kinhaven.

In 1952, in the town of Weston, among other early participants in Kinhaven, were the Orton brothers. This was the beginning of a lasting relationship between these two families––the Dushkins and Kinhaven and the Ortons and the Vermont Country Store. It is this relationship that has endured over these 57 years and that we celebrate today.

In particular, Mildred Ellen Wilcox Orton was an impor-tant friend of Kinhaven and David and Dorothy Dushkin. Her children attended Kinhaven, she studied piano with David and was a member of a music club with Mrs. Dush-kin. She was several times a member of the Board of Trustees and a participant in the Adult Piano Workshop and the Adult Chamber Music Workshop.

We happily celebrate this relationship between Kinhaven and the Orton family with this commemorative plaque.

The Kinhaven chorus, which David and Dorothy loved, will sing three pieces to commemorate this important day---

A Madrigal: Since first I saw your faceTwo Bach Chorales: Now all the woods are sleeping Rejoice and Sing!

Mildred Ellen Orton with her son, Lyman, receiving the plaque that will hang in the concert hall at Kinhaven.

She is applauded by members of the Board of Trustees.

Tony Mazzocchi, Senior Session Brass Faculty member, conducts the Brass Ensemble in a festive fanfare.

Below: Jerry Bidlack conducts the Kinhaven Chorus to conclude the program.

Hip, Hip, Hooray!By Kit van Winkle

Parent, Board Member and AvidSupporter and Participant in the

Piano Workshop andChamber Music Sessions

Exuberant musicians, some bare-foot, dashing across the Kinhaven campus to rehearsals, coachings, practice sessions. Cacophony of voices in the dining room. Laugh-ter, Backrubs, Madrigals, Evening parties. More laughter.

Senior Session? Junior Session? NO! The Adult Sessions! These musicians have taken their vaca-tion time to immerse themselves in collaborative music lessons and are playing and performing during the year. They sport Kinhaven t-shirts and hats and are wildly enthusi-astic about Kinhaven. They have formed strong friendships over the years. They keep in touch with one another during the year and count the days until the next year's ses-sions.

The workshops are evidence that we can enjoy the Magic of Kin-haven at any age!

A Letter from Kate Sheeran:

(Kate is currently the Associate Director of Mannes College of Music Pre-College Division. She was a Senior Session Student at Kinhaven from 1996 to 1998, she was on the Senior Session Staff in 2001, 2003and 2005 and now is a member of the Kinhaven Boardof Trustees.)

Dear Nancy, Jerry, and Board,

Part of the beginning of the year at Mannes Prep for me involves listening to many of our students play their orchestra and chamber music auditions. The stu-dents I heard that went to Kinhaven (both Senior and Junior sessions) have all taken off, musically, in a HUGE way. It is SO gratifying to see. There were upwards of 12 or so Mannes students at Kinhaven this summer and, across the board, they have all returned looking happier, healthier, more excited about music and friendship, and more eager to learn and share here. They look as though the light was turned on! Of course I remember that feeling myself as a student, but it is heartwarming to see it in these students, all these years later. They have all been telling me sto-ries about their great summer experiences and their parents have also approached me to tell me about how impressed they were with everything Kinhaven.

Nancy-- Thank you! This is yet another testament to the fact that everything you and the staff are doing is working to keep everything we know to be successful about Kinhaven just as it should be.

All my best to all of you,Kate

ALUMNI NOTES–FALL 2009

Leila Kells Newcomb Wolf S’63-64 viola: I still remember Kinhaven as one of the best experiences of my life—the beautiful and thrilling music, both instrumental and choral, the Dushkins, my counselors and friends who I would love to find, and the fresh air and peace. I made a living as a “folk-rock” artist for many years, but have returned to my classical roots. My current life’s work has been to expose my little granddaughter to classical music in this world of so much of the other. Much love to all!

Rob Shain S’72 trumpet/piano: I attended Kinhaven many years ago, and the Dushkins as well as Kinhaven itself had a tremendous influence on me. I have many wonderful memories, and after 37 years I’m coming back this year to at least see a concert, and possibly to participate in your Adult Chamber Music Workshop.

Jessica Sibelman S’03-04 clarinet: After Kinhaven, I went to the New England Conservatory of Music for

my musical studies, and studied clarinet with Ricardo Morales. I went on to form an orchestra, The New York Chamber Virtuosi, and we had our debut concert on June 28, 2009 at Merkin Concert Hall, The Kaufman Center in NY. We are also developing a chamber music series, as well as an outreach and lecture series.

Charlotte Kies S’06 clarinet: I am going into my second year at Indiana University, studying clarinet performance with Professor James Campbell!

Editor's Note: As you can see, our Alumni Notes for this newsletter are but a shadow of their former selves. In the '90's, we had three and sometimes four pages of notes and letters from our alumni. I know that now with the internet, twitter, tweak and squeak there is a plethora of ways to communicate with whomever you wish. However, we want to hear from you and a simple email to our of-fice with notes of your personal successes would be most welcome. Email: [email protected] or through the website: www.kinhaven.org.
