This work comes at a crucial time because the distinctive, onion-domed Ukrainian churches which dot the prairie land- scape are rapidly disappearing as the result of demographic change. The documentation produced by the Sanctuary Project will form a permanent record, housed in the Peel Prairie Provinces collection of the University of Alberta Library. This record will provide the data needed by scholars, church decision makers, and specialists in heritage preservation. It will also lead to important scholarly studies. The beginnings of two such studies will be presented at this talk. John-Paul Himka will chronicle Prairie icons and ico- nographers and Natalie Kononenko will talk about Ukrainian Canadian ritual practices and their evolution over time.
