Besides writing and illustrating successful children’s books, Wolf Erlbruch has illustrated various literary texts of such authors as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Karl Philipp Moritz. Gottfried Benn’s expressionist poem "Schöne Jugend" (The Splendour of Youth) inspired him to create a typology of rats, in colour and not devoid of irony. A masterly composition of drawings and collage, this slim volume is a rather unusual artist’s book.
