Greetings Beloved! As I was considering writing for this May Newsletter, I kept coming back to thoughts of Easter, the day upon which our faith is founded. One of the reason I’ve referred to Easter as Resurrection is because had Jesus not rose from the dead, breaking the power of sin and death in the world, where would we be? How would we be? What would we be? One of the hymns that means so much to me is He Lives, written in 1933 by Presbyterian minister/evangelist/musician, Rev. Alfred H. Ackley. Based on Luke 24:6, “He is not here, but He has risen…”, it is said Rev. Ackley wrote the hymn in response to a young Jewish student of his who asked him during a revival, “Why should I worship a dead Jew?” to which Ackley replied, “He lives! I tell you, He is not dead, but lives here and now! Jesus Christ is more alive today than ever before. I can prove it by my own experience, as well as the testimony of countless thousands.” Hymnologist George Sanville writes “The Scriptural evidence, his own heart, and the testimony of history matched the glorious experience of an innumerable cloud of witnesses that “He lives,” so [Ackley] sat down at the piano and voiced that conclusion in song.” Forty Gospel Hymn Stories, 1943.
