K I W I N ’ S T r a i n i n g C o n f e r e n c e

You know what they say: never orget your roots and whereyou came rom. I never did orget. KIWIN’S was where it all startedor me and being selected to be a workshop host or the KIWIN’Straining conerence brought me back to my K-amily roots. On abeautiul, Sunday aernoon in October, all o the members o theKIWIN’S Jet Division gathered or their training conerence at OrangeCoast College. My co-host, Huy Bui, and I hosted the Key 2 Collegeworkshop which aimed to educate the high school students aboutthe process o applying to college, being in college, and succeeding incollege. Aer we were assigned our room to host our workshop, wewatched and waited as the student pour into the workshop. Eager tolearn, they slowly took their seats. We started with a mini icebreakercalled “LOS” which allowed to the students to interact with each oth-

er and get comortable. Te students were assigned a Disney characterrom a certain movie and their goal was to nd another character thatwas in the same movie as them. Once they got into their movie group,they battled it out in an intense and competitive game o “Pancho”.We presented our powerpoint and gave the students some time to ask questions. We also had Brett Butler, the IP Governor o CNH CircleK, come in a guest speaker to speak to the students about the Cal Statesystem. We also gave them candies as symbol o gratitude or comingto our workshop. Overall, it was denitely a successul workshop lledwith educational and vital inormation. Tere was no doubt that thehigh school students walked out inormed.

POOL PARTY

During the month o September, CKI at OCC held a pool party that attracted many new members to come out and enjoy a good bonding experience. We held this event at a community pool locain Irvine, not too ar o rom the 405 Jamboree exit. Te location was made possible due to iany – our Vice President o Service – contribution in donation her community’s pool to the club. Te ma jority o the members had a un time. A ew o us had a ancy ake Olympic competition. Te club abrought ood, drinks, and games to the poolside. Some o us also got thrown into the pool because wreused to go into the pool. Aer the social, the majority o us head over to a rotary sushi restaurant

in Irvine. Most o us were ull aer the meal and it was very satisying because the sushi was made wOverall, this event is one to remember because there, bonds were made and couples were born.

Money, money, money, MONEY! Te District FiFun committee is headed by the District reasurer,Hans Meimban and has 12 dedicated committee members that consist o Celia Fang (UCSD), Erin Sz-elagowski (UCD), Frankie Floresca (UCR), Garvey Su (UCLA), Gerard Gaw (UCLA), Kay Kim (UCB),Lisa Watson (SDSU), Michael Zuniga (UCLA), Ngannu Nguyennguyen (UCD), Phillipe Ly (OCC),Stephen Pino (OCC), and Vinnie Kang (UCSC). Tey work to raise money or the district’s three DFI’s,

PP, Project Eliminate, and Not or Sale. Te FiFun committee hosts events, such as, Crazy Kompetitionor Inant, South, onsite undraisers at FC and DCON, and also plan budgets or the district.

CKI South. Tose words gave me an emotional mixture o ear and excitement. Te ear was due to

the act that I was a brand new member to the club and didn’t really know anyone. Other than that, I wasexcited to meet my ellow club members and many more rom other schools and districts. Since I don’thave a car, I asked one o my team members i I could carpool with her. Tat gave me the opportunity toget to know her better and it put me at ease upon arriving at the event. Once the event started, it was non-stop un and games. I had a blast playing the relay games, as it made me eel like I was part o a team. I be-

came more condent in mysel as well. In the beginning, I quietly cheered with OCC, and in the end, I wascheering my lungs o! I elt proud to represent OCC Circle K among the other schools and really enjoyedthe competitions. Aer the event, I was comortable with everyone in Circle K and I elt like I could easily talk to everyone about any questions or concerns that I had. Everyone was so riendly to me that I quickly got over my ear o not knowing anyone.

In the beginning o the year, I didn’t know many people on campus, and aer attending CKI South, Isee people on campus and wave to them, or strike up a conversation. I highly recommend new membersto attend events like this, so they can come out o their comort zones and have antastic experiences withtheir peers. It has denitely been a highlight o my time with OCC Circle K!

Tere were so many amazing things that I have learned romCKI South. It was also my rst time attending an event rom Magic

Kingdom and the district. Te environment was very new to me es-pecially since I was very anti-social throughout my high school years,and joining Circle K and going to CKI South helped me to get out o my comort zone and get to know new people. I got to know my teammates a lot better and not eel the awkward energy that I had beore,and also people within the community in and out o Magic Kingdom.I learned about leadership and how we all have to work together, andhow i something went wrong we can always turn it in to somethingpositive.” Another thing that I have learned is riendship, which they really stuck to the denition o what it truly means: “a state o mu-

tual trust and support between allied.” What really surprised me themost was that, while we were having all this un, and getting to makenew relationships, we were actually doing it or an important cause istruly a blessing to be part o this event and community, because I havelearned how to be mysel around others and be more sociable.

Trike -A - Thon

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk, to end Alzheimer’s disease, is the nation’s lar

to raise awareness and unds or Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This year, the W

Excited, curious, but cautious; we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We were

like lost puppies looking for the shuttle that would transport us there. Luckily, we saw a shuttle

and followed it to what we believed was the right place. And, it was - even though, we had to ask

three different staff members if it was.On the shuttle, it was a range of emotions; we glanced back at each other and at Kevin Dinh.

“Is it going to be tons of fun? Or, mostly busy work - maybe, a combination of the two?” We stepped

off the shuttle and immediately did not know where we were supposed to report to, that was un-

til we looked left and realized we saw the green fences and the little booth that said “Volunteer

Check In”. We entered and passed the security guard - it felt pretty cool, as if we were VIPs. It was

slightly an awkward mesh, walking up to the table of volunteers who already formed their cliques.

However, soon enough we saw some familiar faces and exchanged hello’s and smiles.

The adventure was about to begin and we were going to be a part of behind-the-scenes work.

Name tags and t-shirts on, we marched off and were assigned our positions. Billy and I were as-

signed to watch traffic on B Street. It was extremely cold, and people would drive by wondering

“why are these kids watching the entry of this street? Or, what in the world is going on here?” It

was pretty awkward sometimes, we had a brief on what to do, but not being familiar to the area - so,

we did not know how to give simple directions to the entrance of the festival. As silly as it sounds,

we really were lost puppies seeking someone for help.

An hour had passed and our advisor had come around with the golf cart to recuse us from the

cold. And, we were off to take our dinner break with endless drinks, pizza, salad, and desserts…or, so we thought, until we realized everyone had eaten everything. But, our advisor, Vicky, said never

fear hungry college students, we just ordered more! We ate, we talked, we met a few new faces. Ex-

plored for a bit, and realized how many drunken people there really were. Before we knew it, it was

time for us to switch stations and be on the inside. We were excited since we were placed so close

to the stage. However, the downside we were the guards to the barrier between VIP entry and regu-

lar admission. It was dark and people were drunk. Within minutes, a lady came up to us complaining

about how she was handicapped and how she could not see to be able to walk through the crowd…not

knowing what to do, we anxiously called our advisor many times. She came to our rescue and left us

with a security guard.

The night became restless, people became angry and confused. Kevin later joined us, and

without him, it probably would have been even more hectic. People forcefully tried to get through,

attempted to sneak in, and even tried to hop over the barrier. We ended up with a second security

guard since it became so crazy. We ended up staying the entire night in that position…since the

girls we let off for “break” never returned. Rather, we saw them at the end of the concert sitting

inside the VIP area... Their lack of commitment during the day to rightfully enforce the barrier

caused our job to become ridiculously overwhelming. However, we can now say that our experience

made some pretty hilariously amusing stories to tell.All in all, it was not what we had expected, but it was still fun in most aspects. There were a

few negatives, but, a lot more positives. We got free food and got tWo know new people. Also, before

we left we got a huge cup of FREE chocolate soft serve. It was definitely an experience we would

not forget; and, at the end of the day, it really is how you make the most of your experience!

Night with Costa Mesa Kiwanians and ASOCC students. On

my favorite parts about this event was that a lot of lkids came to this event to learn some fun science expe

ments, and they are the cutest customers! While I was

AYSO

PANCAKE

BREAKFAST

On Saturday, September 29, AYSO (American Youth Soc-cer Organization) held their Pancake Breakfast at Coast Mesa HighSchool. The volunteers from Orange Coast College Circle K, CostaMesa and Estancia High School Key Clubs, and the Costa Mesa Ki-wanis Club had an early call time at 6:30AM. At the beginning we werebit groggy at first but once we all started working on the pancakes, westarted to feel more awake which the smell of food could wake you up

Starting at 9 AM, my job at the pancake breakfast was to flippancakes on one of the stoves. At the beginning, I thought this wouldbe a piece of cake but when I started flipping, it was really hard sincethere were so many pancakes on the stove and you had to make sureyou flip them as quickly as you can to make sure they didn’t bu rn. Iremember one of the members from the Kiwanis club telling me “Hurry

Up! Hurry Up!” and I rushed to flip all the pancakes so they would beready to be in the heater to stay fresh for the families to eat. Anothertask I had to do: was to collect the Pancake tickets from the soccer

families. Through out the day, hours flew by fast because I was reallystarting to enjoy the event. I really liked talking to some the soccer

families and feeling good about myself for serving for others, eventhough it was hard work, but at the end it was totally worth it.

While I was working on the pancakes, I got a chance to meetother high school key clubbers and learned about their experienceswith Key Club, such as: service projects they have done in the past andwhat their upcoming events are. The key clubbers are definitely join-ing the Circle K family once they get to college. From my perspective,

I could tell the kids take being in Key Club pretty seriously becausethey want to be roles models and to inspire others to give back. Aftertalking to them, I wished I did key club in high school so I could getmore involved in the community.

With help from some friends and what I learned from a massproduction of food, it takes a team to work together to make billionsof pancakes for the soccer families. You have an adequate number of supplies and food to ensure that the players and their families get fed.

The number one rule for serving large amounts of food for people isto be organized and prepared if something goes wrong.

Orange Coast College Circle K has spent much of its history in formingfoundation for our club to grow, but now that our club has thrived in Circle K District (and being the largest Circle K community college clu WORLD), we’ve set our sights on focusing to improve our Kiwanis Family As a result, I’ve started the Club Spotlight of the Week program (CS

short) for our club. Each week, I host a mini-workshop and spotlight a Circle K or Kiwanis Family club. So far, OCC Circle K members have learnand visited Circle K clubs within our Magic Kingdom Division: UC Irvine, CUniversity, CSU Fullerton, and Irvine Valley College. Through the CSDub pour members have had the valuable experience of taking a peek at wha to be a member of the other clubs, whether they’re a growing clublargest Circle K club in all of Circle K International. On average, we havof 9 OCC Circle K members in attendance per school visit. BecauseCSDub has been a great way for OCC to come and support other Cas well as expanding our interclubbing, fellowship, and Kiwanis Family op ties.
