will lead in a celebration of gifts. I’m looking forward to it, both as a pastor and as a parent. I hope you can join us, too.
The highlight of the season is, of course, to worship the Lord Jesus and celebrate His birth. We’ll have three Christmas Eve services this year, at 5:00pm, 7:00pm, and 9:00pm. All the services
will be in the Sanctuary, all three will be under the direction of
TJ Bazzoon, and all three will feature Christmas
carols, candlelight, and Communion. This year is the 200th anniversary of “Silent Night,” and I’ll use that well-known
Christmas carol to preach the “good news of great
joy” to your family and friends. I hope you can join
us, and ask that you ask the Lord to work through our services that night and touch the heart of someone who doesn’t yet know Him.
This Advent and Christmas season is about looking forward to and then celebrating what God has done for us. Come and join us!

From the Pastor’s Pen
We’re taking a step back from The Story this month to celebrate Advent and Christmas. Pastor Bergquist has put together a sermon series called “Rejoicing in Hope,” which looks at the birth of Christ through the eyes of the people around Him. It’s a new way to tell a familiar story. I think you’ll enjoy it very much.
I know you’ll enjoy our annual Christmas Cantata, which this year will be on December 9th. We’ll worship the Lord together at 8:00am and 10:45am, led by our talented handbells and choir. Then after the late service we’ll sit down to enjoy a Congregational Meal. I can think of no better way to kick off the Christmas season than to worship the Lord together as a church family, then share steaks together with family and friends. It’s an event you won’t want to miss. Pick up your ticket today!
The Christmas season will continue with our children’s Christmas program in the Family Life Center at 9:30am on December 23rd. The children will present “A Nativity Play,” then the youth

Giving From the Heart
Mark’s gospel reinforces here that Jesus is interested in our heart, not strict legalism. That is why the large amounts of money given by the rich did not impress him as much as the few cents from the poor widow. The rich gave part of what they
had – maybe even a tithe. Likely to look good in front of others and follow the letter of the law.
The poor widow gave all she had to the Lord. Not just what she should give, but
more….all she had to live on. That is showing complete trust in God to provide. Although the amount was small, the sacrifice out of her love for God was huge.
As we approach the close of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, we should consider what we are willing to give for Christ. Are we willing to keep the commitment that we pledged in our Plans for Giving? Are we willing to give more?

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” -Mark 12:41-44

The St. John Library is now fully cataloged and is open whenever the church is open. The library committee welcomes the congregation to come and use our resources. The check out process is
simple--complete a card with name, contact information, and the type of material being borrowed and place it in the basket on the shelf.
There are books for toddlers, early readers, young adult, and adult, both fiction and non- fiction. We have a great variety of DVDs and an audio section of music and Bible study courses. The holiday season would be a wonderful time to take advantage of this section and the
Christmas stories in the children’s area.
A written cataloged inventory by title and author can be found in the library. Children’s, youth, and adult Bibles as well as devotionals and Bible study courses are available for free (no check out) to enjoy and pass on. We also have a second room next to the library containing reference materials and St. John archived materials.
Thank you to all who have generously donated books, DVDs, and CDs. - The St. John Library Committee

Discover the Power of Prayer: What does your prayer life look like? Do you spend daily time with God? Do you keep your focus on Him at all times? Are you aware
of His presence at every moment of your day? Do you seek His guidance in all things, big and small? Do you want to learn new ways to grow closer to Him?
We will look at the prayerful life of Daniel, the prophet, and learn the keys to his faithful character. We will learn devotional practices to help us focus on our re-lationship with Abba our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. We will consider the risks and benefits of delving into deeper, more intimate conversation with God.
The cost is $100 for the weekend or $30 for Saturday only. The church bus will be available. Pick up a brochure at the Info Desk or register online on our website under “Events”. For more info, contact Peggy Hoppes: [email protected]
