Crawfish Boils: A Message From LDEQ

St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division SWAT Graduation

The LDEQ is reminding us, begging us, warning us, to not dump our crawfish shells into the storm drains, ditches, coulees, or anyplace else where they could be washed into our rivers, bayous, lakes, or streams.

You're probably wondering, why? Those bodies of water are the exact places that crawfish come from, they molt and leave their empty shells behind as part of their normal growth, so why is that harmful?

The short answer is this. The dead craw-fish could contain pathogens that could spread disease or otherwise harm other aquatic life. Think of it like this, the crawfish

you bought probably did not come from the storm drain or ditch where you're contem-plating dumping the shells. This potential cross-contamination from one location to another does give DEQ reason for concerns. The decaying crawfish shells can also lead to oxygen depletion which could lead to fish kills. There could also be an overabun-dance of nitrogen created from the decay-ing shells. That could lead to larger algae blooms in local waterways.

So, what should we do with our crawfish shells?

The best way is to simply double bag

them and put them in your trash. Your reg-ular waste disposal experts will take care of the rest. You can also use your crawfish shells as fertilizer. Just bury the shells deep enough, away from a ditch or wastewater estuary, and cover them with hay or topsoil.

Oh, one more thing, you shouldn't dump boil water down the storm drain either. DEQ says your public wastewater system can handle that so, just pour it down the drain in your home. If you're not on a public wa-ter supply, DEQ suggests you dispose of the spicy water in a grassy area away from ditches, streams, and bayous.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Of-fice recently held a basic Special Weapons and Tactics school led by members of the Special Op-erations Division, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

The school culminated in a graduating class of 11 depu-ties who underwent demanding training that consisted of phys-ical fitness activities, firearms training and safety instruction, and classroom time. Depu-ties were put through various courses of fire that involved tactical maneuvers, critical de-cision-making while mimicking actual incidents, and tear gas training.

While everyone involved hopes these types of circum-stances the deputies were trained for never have to be dealt with in St. Bernard, Sheriff Pohlmann said his department always trains for the possibili-ties.

“It’s a question of being pre-pared in advance for what could happen, while hoping it doesn’t happen,’’ the Sheriff said. “In today’s environment, it’s the preparation that’s the key.’’

Keeping his team abreast of the latest trends in training for these types of occurrences is crucial, the Sheriff said.

A ceremony was held for

graduates on March 1 at Nunez Community College.

Graduates are: Lt. Jorge Var-gas, Sgt. Dixie Dusang, Dep. Matthew Schmill, Dep. Ja-son Saltalmachia, Dep. Robert Smith, Dep. Corey Bordelon, Dep. Chris Manno, Dep. Chris-topher Battaglia, Dep. Jessica Edwards, Dep. Brandon Gaudet, and Dep. Jared Bazile.

Dep. Manno was the top scorer in an individual shooting competition, and Sgt. Dusang and Dep. Edwards are St. Ber-nard’s first female officers to graduate SWAT school.

SWAT training was imple-mented by Maj. Bobby Norton,

Special Operations Division commander, and Capt. Stephen Ingargiola, director of training, along with assistance from Maj. Daniel Bostic, Lt. Chris Scheel-er, Lt. Mike Ingargiola, Lt. Rob-ert Mire, Sgt. David Culpepper, Sgt. Brian Canepa, retired Maj. David DiMaggio, retired Lt. Ray-mond Theriot, and retired Sgt. Dick Beebe.

Patricia P. GarciaPatricia P. Garcia, age 63, entered

into eternal rest on Sunday, February 28th, 2021. Patricia was born October 13, 1957 to the late, Wilfred and Virginia “DoDo” Perez, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Willie Perez, her in-laws, Phillip “Peyo” and Josephine “Pena” Garcia, Sr., her brother-in-law, Phillip “Yeto” Garcia, Jr., and her grand-parents. Patricia is survived by her hus-band, William “Mark” Garcia, Sr., her sons, William “Mark” Garcia, Jr., Justin Garcia (Kelsey), and Angelo Gonzales, her sisters, Deborah Perez, and Sharon Jeanfreau (Gary), her 7 grandchildren, Grace, Gage, Ava, Josie, Macyn, Blake, and Brett, her sister-in-laws, Patricia Roberts (Joe), and Sharon Billiot (Gene), along with other countless relatives and close friends. Patricia was raised in Vio-let, Louisiana, where she would remain a lifelong resident, aside from a brief move to Boston with her family. In Violet, she met the love of her life and childhood sweetheart, William “Mark” Garcia, Sr., with whom she shared 45 wonderful years of marriage. Patricia’s three sons, William “Mark” Garcia, Jr., Justin Garcia, and Angelo Gonzales were her world. She lived for her many days spent at the ball parks watching them do what they loved growing up. Her seven grandchil-dren, Grace, Gage, Ava, Josie, Macyn, Blake, and Brett, were her pride and joy. If you saw Patricia with her grandchil-dren, you saw true happiness. Patricia has been a dedicated employee of the St. Bernard Parish School Board since 1993. Her dedication and compassion-ate heart led her to be the most devoted caretaker to her sister and companion, Deborah Perez. Her love for Deborah could be seen by all who knew her. Patricia‘s kind and welcoming nature is what turned most of her friends into family. Glen Topey is one that held a truly special place in her heart. There is only one way to describe Patricia: “One of a kind”, because she was just that, and there’s not one person who crossed her path that would disagree. She was the most loving, compassionate, selfless, generous, and humble person there was. She was instantly loved by all who met her, and that love is eternal. She will be missed by so many, but her memory will always be kept alive. The Garcia Family would like to thank the Serigne Family and the Brown Family for their unwav-ering friendship at this time and always.

A private graveside will be held at a later date.

Don't miss me when I'm gone. You barely saw me when I was here. When I called. You didn't answer. So don't miss me when I'm gone. I tried to reach out, to hang out. You never reached back. So don't miss me when I'm gone. I asked you to dinner. You never responded. So don't miss me when I'm gone. I called to see if you wanted to watch a movie. You are always too busy. So don't miss me when I'm gone I invited you to the party. But you never came. So dont miss me when I'm gone. When I called to say I was in the neighborhood and I could stop by. You are too tired for company. So dont miss me when I'm gone. Because I will be gone. And it'll be too late to call. Too late hang,No dinners to be had. No party to miss. No company to entertain. So dont miss me when I'm gone. Miss me when I'm right next to u. Miss me after we hang up the phone. Miss me when the dinner ends. Miss me from across the room during the party. Miss me when I walk out your door. For when I'm gone....missing me will be all that's missing.
