Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the highest feast day of the year: the Resurrection of the Lord—Easter. On behalf of the staff and faculty and other ministers of the parish of the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary I wish you and those you love a very Happy Easter!

“A Stitch….A Prayer….The Touch of God”
Our Prayer Shawl ministry offers warmth and the mes-sage of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. Members of this ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to anyone experi-
encing a physical or emotional crisis. Recipients realize that they are not alone but are wrapped in the love and power of God. Some Prayer Shawl Ministry members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meetings (10:00am on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusively from home. This ministry is open to anyone with willing hands. You don’t have to be a mem-ber of Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary. You don’t even have to know how to knit or crochet! We will show you how. Call Noreen at 798-0055 for more information on this wonderful ministry. If you know of anyone who needs the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen and she will make arrangements to get one to you. Again, you or the recipient need not be a member of our congregation. God's love and comfort is for all.

St. Mary Nursery News
The parish nursery could use some more volunteers. The nursery is
available during the 9:30 a.m. mass on Sundays. On average the volun-
teers are only in the nursery one Sunday a month. If you are interested

St. Mary English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Around the Area
Making decisions about schooling for your children can be overwhelming. May-be you are considering homeschooling for your family? If so, there is a Catholic Homeschool group in our Wilmington area called “Ark of the Covenant”. We meet regularly for feast day celebrations, family rosaries, crafts, service projects, fun and fellowship. Camillus Minsters Needed — Will you spend one or two hours a week to bring the Holy Eucharist to members of St. Mary's who are not able to come to Mass? There are parishioners in private homes and nursing homes who hope you say, "Yes." You can usually serve any day, day time or evening. Please

The Liturgical Choir from NC State University
will visit St. Mary on May 4, and will provide music at the 9:30 and
11:00 masses. The Liturgical Choir was founded in 2013 to serve the
Catholic campus ministry at NC State and Meredith College in Ra-
leigh. Comprised of college students and community members, the choir
sings throughout the school year at the Sunday evening campus ministry
Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral. The group is directed by Jeff Rice, Di-
rector of Music at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Community in Graham,
NC.
If you were baptized Catholic but just haven’t been to Mass in a while, or
maybe you left the practice of your Catholic faith for a particular reason,
then Welcome Home is for you. The program is being offered at Immac-
ulate Conception at 6650 Carolina Beach Road in the De Sales Faith
Formation Center Annecy Room on Tuesdays, 6:30—8:00 pm. For more

“Via Cruces” - Meditation Garden
Dr. and Mrs. Richard Tamisiea extend an invitation for
St. Mary parishioners and guests to visit their medita-
tion garden trail and pray the Stations of the Cross. No
phone call or arrival announcement is necessary. The
meditation garden is located at 6207 Fox Run Road in
Wilmington. Take the second road right off of Old Military Road which
is off of Greenville Loop, near Bradley Creek Elementary School. Enter
the driveway and park. “Via Cruces” is to your left.
They hope that many will take advantage of this garden experience for
reflection and devotion to our Lord.

Divine Mercy Sunday
Cape Fear Deanery
April 27, 2014
Through St. Faustina, Our Lord revealed His request for a solemn cele-
bration in honor of His Mercy on the Second Sunday of Easter. We wel-
come you to join us as we gather and join others the world over who
have similarly been drawn to acknowledge the mercy we all need to
receive. The Novena to the Divine Mercy begins on Good Friday.
St. Stanislaus Parish, Castle Hayne, NC, the host parish for the Divine
Mercy Sunday celebration for the Cape Fear Deanery, is April 27th
@3:00pm. This celebration will include a procession of the Blessed Sac-
rament led by the Knights of Columbus. Knights from all over the Cape
Fear Deanery will be participating.
Every Catholic in the Caper Fear Deanery is invited and encouraged to
attend and participate in this devotion.* Divine Mercy brochures con-
taining the Novena and the Chaplet are available for anyone who wishes
to prepare themselves to fully obtain the promised mercies and graces by
praying the Chaplet and Novena.
* Following the celebration, we will enjoy a potluck supper in the fel-
lowship hall. Covered dishes are appreciated.

Carolina Catholic gets ignited! For our first show in April, Carolina Catholic gets ignited at the Ignited by Truth Conference held in Raleigh on the weekend of March 28 and 29. In part one of this show, we will chat with both Dr. Scott Hahn and his bride, Kimberly Hahn, about their conversions, their trip to Italy, and their excitement at the canoniza-tion of Pope John Paul II. In part two of this show, we will chat with Jennifer Fulwiler, an atheist turned Catholic, and author of Something Other Than God. We will also speak to Dr. Patrick Fagan about what social research data has demonstrated about the positive role that faith-filled families fulfill in our present day society. Part one of this exciting show will air on 93.1 FM, WBPL-LP, on the second and third weekend of April, and part two will air only on the weekend of April 26 and 27. Spring has come and there is new life all around us. That is what
resurrection means, and today we celebrate the fact that Jesus has gifted us
with eternal life. I write this so easily…we shall live forever. What a
miracle we partake in. We know that death isn’t the end. St. Paul sums it
up – if Christ did not rise, did not do what He said he was going to do, then
our faith is in vain. But Jesus is alive and well. No wonder we sing
Alleluia.
Our lives are filled with stories of resurrection Here at the Outreach it has
become a vital part of our Mission statement for we exist to give hope to
one another and to all we meet. Yes, the clothing, the food, the furniture,
the dishes, the funds, etc., etc., etc., are all here, because of so many
people’s generosity, but the basic gift we have to offer each other is to
listen to them, respect the differences and serve them. It is no small task
but today’s Feast, the central one in our Liturgical Year, gives us the
reason why we do what we do. Jesus is alive and well. The linens that
bound Him are gone, folded neatly and left on the tomb. The Angel tells
the women “He is not here!” Find Him, for he goes before you. We need
to loosen up the cloths that bind us so we can serve our brothers and
sisters. Alleluia!
Our semi-annual Yard Sale netted about $3,300 These funds will do
wonders for our “One Woman, Three Men and a Truck” program. Thank
you for all your support.
I think we can say a few Alleluias about that accomplishment!

Special Need of the Week
The Outreach Ministry reopens on Tuesday, April 22nd at 8:30 am.
Our Children’s department is asking for 3-10 month clothing for boys;
Girls sizes 2T and 3T and as already requested boy’s sizes 14-18.
If possible please hold on to winter clothing until the fall as we can not
store it because we are in basement and mildew sets in pretty quickly.
We can also use some sippy cups.

Gala, to be held April 26, 2014, at the downtown Raleigh Marriott.

In the first two months of the 2014 Bishop’s Annual Ap-peal, “Grateful to God, Generous to Neighbor,” Diocesan faithful have pledged over $4 million. A Difference” award. Betty has
served as the NC Senior Tar Heel
Legislature Delegate for New Hano-
ver County advocating for older
adults and their caregivers since 2006. She is currently a member of the
Cape Fear Elder Abuse Prevention Network and participates in their
community outreach skit group. She is an active member & chairperson
of our Regional Aging Advisory Council. She serves as the Chair of the
New Hanover County Senior Resource Center’s Home and Community
Care Block Grant committee. Betty is an integral part of the Special
Needs Sheltering/Individual Care Coordination Center with New Hano-
ver County Emergency Management during times of disasters. For
more than 20 years, she has been a board member and volunteer nurse
for the Cape Fear Clinic (formerly known as the Tileston Health Clinic),
helping lead that organization during a time of incredible need in our
city. Betty and her husband Ed are dedicated members of the Basilica
Shrine of St. Mary and help with their many outreach and assistance
programs.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As the Church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus
Christ, the words of the psalmist echo in our hearts:
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and
be glad." We rejoice in Christ's triumph over sin and
death and recognize that in Him we discover newness of life.
We are privileged to share in Christ's victory through the sacraments of
the Church, which restore us to a life of grace. Thus, we are inspired to
draw ever closer to Our Lord Jesus, most especially in our frequent cele-
bration of the Sacrament of Penance and our faithful participation in the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and reception of the Holy Eucharist, the
source of our strength.
With the apostles and disciples, we too are sent forth to be witnesses to
the Risen Lord. We do so through the holiness of our lives, the practice
of our faith and the generous outreach and compassion we extend to
others, particularly those most in need. More than ever, others need to
see the joy we have in our relationship with Jesus and in our commit-
ment to live according to His Gospel. In this way, we invite others to
faith in Jesus Christ and contribute to building up the Church.
During this Easter season, I pray that God will renew our faith in Chrisf s
victory over sin and death. May Our Risen Lord abundantly bless you
and your family with His peace and joy in this holy season and always.

St. Mary School Announces Joshua 1:9 Scholarship Fund
An anonymous donor has established the “Joshua 1:9 Scholarship Fund”
to provide tuition assistance for children of a single parent or those who
are African American or Hispanic that wish attend St. Mary Catholic
School.
The seed for the Joshua 1:9 Scholarship Fund was sown more than 60
years ago. It was born as a result of the gratitude of two young children
of a single parent who were given the opportunity for a Catholic educa-
tion. The donor credits the many teachers who guided, educated and
prepared them for a productive life. The Joshua 1:9 Scholarship Fund is a
way of giving back by giving the gift of Catholic education to other chil-
dren.
Families interested in tuition support at St. Mary Catholic School should

garding general admission and tuition assistance guidelines.
The Joshua 1:9 Scholarship Fund, which is administered by the North

Mrs. Lenz’s First Grade Mrs. Lenz’s first grade class has been learning about rocks and minerals in science. We have examined the three different types of rocks and learned
how they are formed. We have also gone on a rock hunt and brought rocks and soil samples in from our homes to observe and compare with our friends.
