Layettes for Lutheran World Relief (LWR)
Donations are needed to compete 14 layettes for LWR Each layette costs $1.30 to send. We are accepting contributions for those funds as well as donations of the items below:
• 2 hooded sweatshirts size sm for infants / 2 sweaters & 2 caps • 5 receiving blankets
• 10 dark hand towels • 24 bars of soap in package • 28 sleepers/gowns without feet

Volunteer Coordinator(s) Needed for Family Promise Meal Support
Family Promise is currently housing homeless families in local motels. They plan to continue that model at least until the end of the year. They are partnering with local churches to provide meals for families.
Partner congregations provide all three daily meals to the families at the motel.
The congregations purchase breakfast and lunch supplies and deliver those on the Sunday of the start of their hosting week.
Congregation volunteers deliver a meal nightly around 5:30 p.m.
St. Paul is looking for a person or persons to coordinate our support of Family Promise for the week of Sept. 27 - Oct. 3. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Pr. Lucy at [email protected].
St. Paul Lutheran Church Council Minutes Date: 7/14/2020 Meeting: held via Zoom Call to order: 6:38 p.m.
Attendance: Ken Harris, Judy Markee, Jane Carr, Jen Murray, Dave Knutson, Jean Neitzel, Pastor Lucy.
Devotion: Led by Jean. August will be led by Jane.
Approval of Minutes: Dave motioned to approve the minutes from the June 9, June 15 and June 30, 2020 meetings; Jean seconded; all approved. Motion carried.
Treasurers’ Report: Glenda emailed her report prior to the meeting. We will discuss and approve at the August meeting.
It was pointed out that giving has continued to be generous
Finance Report: We will discuss and approve at the August meeting.
Unfinished business: Congregational check-ins have been postponed for the month of July. May change day once we resume the check-ins via Zoom.
Eckholm Property. There has been one showing so far. Decided that we are not in a hurry to sell at this time—showings are down because of COVID, etc.
New Business: Live Service update: Both services went well with everyone following procedures. We discussed council duties and some changes we will try for the upcoming services. Judy will meet with Chet to discuss the concerns he has regarding the sanitizing duties.
Family Promise: We are looking for someone to coordinate the meals for the week of Sept 27-Oct 3.
Pastor’s Report: Pastor voiced her concern regarding our children and family ministry for the upcoming fall. Ken will discuss coming up with ideas and a plan with Linda and council will plan on a brainstorming session at the August meeting.
Bishop election/Synod Meeting has been postponed again. Now scheduled for Aug 29 with everyone attending remotely.
We received a letter back in response to the one we sent out to the Black Churches in our area. We hope to continue to work together and are looking for ideas as to what that means.
President’s Report: Ken discussed the quote that we received from Kone regarding installing a soft start component to the motor. It was determined that it is not a necessary install.

MEMORIAL NEWS
God continues to bless our congregation, even through the COVID shutdown. Memorials have been received in memory of Ralph Carlson and Linda Blanco.
We thank family and friends for these memorials.
A donation from the Warren Lensert Memorial has paid for yearly upkeep on the elevator. A much needed vacuum has been purchased with money from the Virginia Knutson Memorial.
SouthCentral Synod of Wisconsi
Pastoral Care Fund Over the last several months St. Paul has received a few donations designated for "those in need" connected with our congregation. We periodically receive such donations, sometimes in the form of cash and sometimes gift cards. These gifts will be deposited in a "Pastoral Care Fund" which Pr. Lucy oversees. Please be aware that you may designate gifts to this fund and also that if you find yourself in a time of particular critical need you may reach out to Pr. Lucy to receive help. She can walk you through the few parameters and preserve confidentiality about your need.
If you wish to donate, please make your donation out to “St. Paul Lutheran Church” and note in the memo line “Pastoral Care Fund.”
South-Central Synod of Wisconsin
Bishop Election Update
The Synod Assembly’s Executive Council has decided to hold a fully remote video conference on August 29, one in which each voting member is connected individually to the proceedings.
Ken and Marilyn Harris, Hayden Murry, and Pastor Lucy will represent St. Paul as voting members at the Assembly, which will focus on two primary agenda items: the election of a bishop and passing of a budget.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
AUGUST 9 - 30
Our neighborhood kids will need school supplies whether they are learning at home or in the classroom. St. Paul Outreach wants to help again this year by sponsoring a School Supply Drive.
Donations can be dropped off at St. Paul during Thursday evening services, on Sundays at 9:30 services, or on Wednesdays during soup lunch pick-up (10:00 a.m. to .1:00 p.m.). Please note that there will be no in-person services from August 6 through August 16.
Please help our neighbors by donating from the list below. If you are unable to deliver supplies to church, please call the church office to make arrangements for pickup. You can also make a monetary donation and we’ll do the shopping for you.

34th Annual Lutherdale Fest Quilt Auction Saturday, August 8, 2020 - 9am to 3pm
An annual fundraiser to support the life changing ministry of Lutherdale. This event is outdoors. Physical distancing is requested and masks are encouraged. For more information, go to:

Special quilt viewing, in 1-hour time slots, will be available
Monday, August 3 - Thursday, August 6 for up to 10 people at a time. Participants will have the opportunity to view quilts and place bids. Limited viewing will also be available on Friday, August 7 to preview the quilts. Quilt viewing will be inside the Chapel and new Conference Center. Let’s Talk About Race
This week one of my favorite people in the world – someone I love and know loves Jesus – posted on Facebook an image of a church sign that said: “In the Bible there is no black or white church. Jesus did not come to save skin but to save souls.” And I cringed. In fact, I was so troubled by that post that I tossed and turned thinking about it that night. Why? Because I understand why that sentiment, at first glance, seems so true – and at the same time I have learned just how wrong and subtly dangerous it is.
We are living in a time when racial tensions seem to continuously pop up every few years, even every few months, and I often hear (from
white folk) how tired they are of the hatred, the disunity. Why can’t we all just get
along? Why can’t we just stop talking about color and race and treat one another as
neighbors?? It can feel like a good Christian response – but the problem is, nobody is
colorblind when it comes to noticing one another’s skin. We are different – and as
human beings, we do notice differences. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, most of us would be pretty hurt and offended if
people didn’t ever notice the things about us that make us different. The problem isn’t when people notice that you’re different – it’s when they treat you unfairly and unkindly based on those differences.
The bible doesn’t downplay or ignore differences, including differences in culture, nationality and language. In fact, the bible embraces difference as essential to God’s creation and one of the things that makes creation so beautiful and good. The breathtaking array of diversity in all that God has made is a GOOD thing, and God celebrates it! From the creation story in Genesis 1 & 2 to the imagery of heaven in Revelation, the bible names and celebrates the differences in human beings specifically – one phrase repeated throughout Scripture to describe the people of God is “from every nation, tribe, people and language.” The Apostle John in his vision in the book of Revelation can’t tell a lot about the vast multitude gathered around the throne – but he can tell that they are from different places and cultures. My guess is
“The Lord says: Don’t let the immigrant who has joined with
the Lord say, ‘The Lord will exclude me from the people.’ My
house will be known as a house of
prayer for all peoples, says the Lord God, who gathers Israel’s
outcasts. I will gather still others to those I have already gathered.”

Also – God loves bodies of all shapes, sizes, genders and colors. We know from the Gospels – from the incarnation, when God put on the flesh of a baby boy born to Jewish parents in occupied Palestine, to the resurrection, when Jesus appeared to the disciples and told them to put their fingers in the holes in his hands and side – God doesn’t just
save souls, he saves skin and bodies too: brown skin, black skin, white skin,
and every shade in between. So why – when the bible is pretty unambiguous about these themes – why is it so easy to say “Amen” and share when we see that Facebook meme about Jesus coming to save souls, not skin? The problem is we’re steeped in a tradition
that was solidified in this country when Christian slaveholders were looking to justify owning people. Part of the rationale became that they were doing African people good by bringing them to this “civilized” country and teaching them about Christianity. But they had to twist the Scripture to emphasize that salvation wasn’t about saving people here and now from suffering in their bodies – but about saving their souls in the hereafter. A whole theology of salvation that was “colorblind” – and also blind to human suffering – was built. And the remnants of it linger today.
Listen, these are hard and complicated conversations. It requires us to look at our neighbors’ pain and suffering and say, with Jesus, “I am my brother’s keeper – I see you and I hear you.” We cannot afford as a church, as a white church, to look away. So I am asking you to engage in the
conversation with us. This fall we’ll be starting a book study on I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown. It is the memoir of a black woman raised largely in white Christian schools and churches, and it wrestles with not only her journey to love her black skin and culture, but also her loving, blunt critique of mostly inadequate white Christian attempts at diversity and racial justice. I hope you’ll join us to listen and learn – all in the name of becoming more closely aligned with that vision of what God is creating – a church that is beautifully, gloriously, from every tribe and language and nation and people.
