A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education
Celebrating 60 Years 1954 - 2014

Dear St Michael’s College Community,
ACADEMIC ASSEMBLIES
Congratulations to all students who have received Academic Excellence and/or Academic Endeavour awards at the Primary and Secondary Academic Assemblies held over the last two weeks. As we recognize and celebrate the achievements of each of the individual award recipients, the sheer number of students acknowledged also provides a clear indication of the value placed on learning at the College. I am also very aware of, and congratulate, the many other students who have put themselves right on the cusp of such awards, or are achieving above the expectations they have set for themselves.
I would also like to acknowledge our Year 10 students on their recent graduation from the Middle School to the Senior School. While this is in many ways a symbolic moment, the transition is also very practical as they now move into their SACE subject selection program in preparation for their final years of schooling. This process requires a significant partnership between the staff, students and families to get best outcomes.
LASALLIAN MISSION COUNCIL
It was our pleasure this week to host the Lasallian Mission Council at St Michael’s College. The recent establishment of
the LMC is intended to strengthen the association between the Brothers and those engaged with them in their Mission. In addition to their scheduled meeting, the Council was also able to undertake a well-received tour of the College. A
number of members of the LMC present are well known to us, including the Chair of our own College Board Marie Dorrington, past Chair and current Board member Br Chris Gorringe and past Principal Steve Byrne. We wish the LMC all the best in their important role within the Lasallian organization.
SEQTA
St Michael’s College is committed to providing an outstanding contemporary learning environment where students and teachers are afforded the very best opportunities to develop their skills and effectively utilise available technologies to improve learning outcomes. As part of this commitment, we continue to roll out our learning management system, SEQTA. SEQTA is a web-based learning management system that enables teachers, students and parents to collaborate more effectively to establish better learning and teaching opportunities. During Semester One, staff have been utilising
SEQTA for a number of purposes, including student attendance, pastoral noting, progress reports and communication.
Student Coneqt was also enabled as teachers trialled and developed the learning portal facet of the LMS. From the beginning of Semester Two, all secondary students now have formal access to all subject outlines, assessment plans and lesson resources through the learning portal. As SEQTA is web-based, this essentially allows students access back into their classroom from anywhere, at any time. I would encourage parents to investigate how the learning portal operates with your sons and daughters and further encourage their use of this learning resource. As we continue the
implementation process, 2015 will see teachers formally utilising the assessment and marksbook elements of SEQTA, at which time parents will also have access to ‘Parent Coneqt’. I would like to thank the staff of St Michael’s College for their commitment to ensuring the success of this implementation process and continually working towards improved learning outcomes for our students.

ST MICHAEL’S COLLEGE
DIAMOND JUBILEE
1954 – 2014
WE REMEMBER …
Br Kevin Moloney’s driving ethos for the College was a vision where the school would be a place where peace and justice would reign and where none shall wrong another. At the start of his Headmastership in 1977, Br Kevin’s major dictum was that St Michael’s was not a supermarket where those who came to it could choose only certain elements in its life, eg the academic but not the religious, the sporting but not other social involvement. He maintained that enrolment at St Michael’s involved undertaking a package which embraced the academic, the sporting, the care for others, involvement in social and community affairs and the taking up of leadership roles where possible, and, where not possible, the duty of positively supporting those who did take up those roles. In 1978 he reinstated the Cadet Unit at the
College with St Michael’s students gaining the coveted Adventure Training Award Badge, distinctions in leadership courses, undertaking bivouacs and annual camps experiencing bush life which involved preparing and cooking their own meals, first aid, map reading and compass activities. Mr Cornish joined the unit and brought with him his CMF knowledge as a medical and hygiene officer, as well as his teaching abilities, for the benefit of all. Celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of St Michael’s College ran for the whole year in 1979. Under the management of Br Kevin, successful events were held including a Mass attended by more than 5,000 people and a special gathering in the Adelaide Town Hall. Through 1980 and 1981, Br Kevin planned further building extensions that would enable the College to widen its curriculum offerings. 6 June, 1982 saw the completion and opening of the Environmental Design Centre (currently the Technical Studies and Art area). This group of buildings catered for woodwork, metalwork and plastics, as well as art, photography, drama, design and pottery. Br Kevin, during his principalship and after realising that the College did not have a formal opportunity to farewell the Year 12 cohort, introduced the ceremony
known as Graduation Evening. And so started the tradition of farewelling our Year 12 students and their families with a Graduation Mass. As they are today, students were presented to the assembled community, given a Certificate of Graduation and a special memento. They were also publicly thanked for the contribution each had made to the life of the school. Br Kevin Moloney’s vision to widen the curriculum offerings of St Michael’s College also culminated in the purchase of a property at Goolwa. This acquisition enabled class groups of about thirty students to experience extra activities in the Victor Harbour and Hindmarsh Island area. It provided a place in which leadership seminars for the school leaders and prefects could be held away from a school atmosphere.

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK 2014, VOCATIONS & PRAYER VIGIL On Friday 8 August, the Feast of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, the Vocations Centre is again holding our Vocations Prayer Vigil in St Francis Xavier Cathedral.
Archbishop Phillip Wilson will celebrate Mass at 6:00pm with Exposition and Benediction to follow. During Exposition students from different schools will lead us through times of prayer and reflection focusing on Jesus’ call to us in the Scriptures. This will be a wonderful opportunity for Parish groups and individuals to pray together for Vocations for the Archdiocese while celebrating St Mary of the Cross’ Feast Day.
There will be refreshments in the Cathedral Hall after Benediction. For more details, contact Deacon Tony Telford-Sharp on 8210 8120 or email [email protected].
CHILD & ADOLESCENT SLEEP CLINIC The Child & Adolescent Sleep Clinic at Flinders University is providing treatments for common childhood sleep problems. The clinic is currently welcoming referrals for children aged between 6-13 years. For more information contact [email protected] or 8201 7587.

Mrs Brigette Jaeschke, Director of Mission
SECONDARY SUBJECT COUNSELLING INFORMATION Term 3 is when students and parents make important decisions regarding subject choices in preparation for future career pathways. These choices should be guided by student interest and success in preparatory subjects. Students in Year 10 have completed, or will be completing in Semester 2, the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) as the first stage of their SACE certificate. This is designed to assist students to identify possible career paths. Various parent information nights are designed to explain the subject selection process and SACE certificate requirements and I urge parents to attend these if at all possible. Mr Anthony Vizaniaris and Ms Rose Coorey are available for Careers Counselling and Mr Kevin Woolford is available for advice on VET courses. Appointments can be made by contacting Student Services. Critical dates for various stages of the subject selection process are listed below. Due dates for the return of various forms will be published on the forms. Your support in this important process is greatly appreciated and I can be contacted through Student Services to clarify any issues arising.

PEDAL PRIX The third round of the Australian International Pedal Prix Super Series was held last Sunday at Victoria Park racecourse. St Michael’s College once again had 2 teams racing, competing against 181 teams entered on the day. Our Senior Secondary team completed 123 laps of the 1.35Km circuit. This was only 6 laps short of their tally from the last race, quite good considering some problems were encountered during this race. They finished in 25th place in their category and in 83rd place overall. In total the team rode 166.5Km in the 6 hour duration of the race. The Junior Secondary team, many who were only riding in their second race completed 84 laps of the track leaving them 19 laps short of their previous race effort. Much of this was due to mechanical problems and a roll over down the main straight when Ethan was given a nudge resulting in some minor work being required. The Junior team finished in 38th place in their category and in 172nd position overall. In total they rode 113.7Km in the 6 hours. Both teams worked well together on the day and it was good to see students from different year levels co-operating to ensure the day ran smoothly: from organising riding rosters, checking riders were prepared and ensuring both teams had smooth pit and rider changes. As always, the very supportive parents present all pitched in to help set up, maintain and pack up our pit area, while some also carried out manager and track marshalling duties, or slaved over a hot barbeque to feed the hungry crew. We all left Victoria Park tired but happy with our second hit out, and are very much looking forward to Round 4, the big 24 hour race at Murray Bridge on the 20 – 21 September. This race is the penultimate event on the Pedal Prix calendar. All teams are looking forward to test their endurance over the 24 hours and achieve the best placing possible, and are especially looking forward to riding their vehicles throughout the night. The Senior team are keen to get their new vehicle on the track and be a more competitive team
in this new, faster vehicle. Lastly a BIG thank you to our sponsors for the 2014 season – Eagle Fuels, Flinders Ports Authority and Kennards Hire Darlington. Their generosity over the season is very much appreciated as it allows our teams to participate in Pedal Prix at a more competitive level.

METAL TECHNOLOGY As part of the Year 10 Design and Technology course students are required to design and construct their own wood fired BBQ. Designs range from simple folding camping BBQ designs, to larger projects using a drum or keg as the body of the BBQ. The images shown are the work of two ‘A’ grade students, Adrian Marchesan (left) and Adam Romano (right) who have already made good use of their projects at home. It is great to see students putting their projects to good use.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT BRAND NEW ENSEMBLE – SMC CONCERT BAND! Last Friday saw the first ever rehearsal of the brand new St Michael’s College Concert Band. 41 students, mainly wind players, came together in one of the most anticipated rehearsals in years! We are very pleased to finally have a concert band, to go with our 8 other school ensembles. The band will be playing a wide range of music, from
movie themes and soundtracks, to medleys, classical, rock and jazz repertoires. The SMC Concert Band has been 8 years in the making. Concert Bands are mainly wind-based ensembles, and the hugely exciting recent growth in numbers of students playing wind instruments has allowed us to initiate this band. We have 41 students who attended the first rehearsal, but we can see the band growing up to 60 and maybe even 80 students in coming years! The Concert Band will be co-directed by Mr Donovan and Mr Woolford. Our aim is to have our first performance at the ‘Pulse’ concert in the Founders Hall later this term. If you would like to join our fantastic new band, or have any questions about it, please feel free to contact Mr Donovan in the Music Department.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2014 AUDITIONS Last term the music department took part in auditions for ‘Support Acts’ places for the Catholic Schools Music Festival. Congratulations to the following soloists and ensembles who were successful. These performers will be performing on stage in the Festival Theatre in September:
Wednesday 24 September: Grace Barilla (Voice) + Olivia Bozzon (piano) – singing “Clown” Thursday 25 September: Big Band 1 – Playing “Getaway” Tyler Venter (Jazz Guitar) + rhythm section – Playing “Confirmation”
We are proud of these students and look forward to seeing and hearing them performing on the big stage! CATHOLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL – NEW WEBSITE The CSMF has just launched a new website at http://musicfestival.cesa.catholic.edu.au/home. Feel free to peruse this website for any details you may need to obtain tickets, or any other information. The SMC Music Department will be doing a bulk ticket order for families of students who will be performing as support acts. Details will be sent out to families this week. For general public tickets, please refer to the website.

STUDENT SERVICES
Please be aware that many of these articles have extra information that can be accessed on the Student Services Intranet page: http://intranet/secondary/student_services/latest_news/current.pdf#
STOP PRESS: DEFENCE FORCE ROADSHOW - INTERESTED IN ADFA Please see the flyer in this newsletter if you are interested in a pathway through ADFA and Officer Entry in the Defence Force. There are specific information sessions being held this Monday and Tuesday at Golden Grove and Rostrevor College. Whilst the Defence Force will be represented at Careers Night, these presentations are very detailed and specific.
CAREER COUNSELLING APPOINTMENTS We have encouraged Year 12 students to make required Career Counselling Appointments early on this term. From Week 4 we focus on supporting Year 10 and Year 11 students who require support during their subject selection decision-making. Students will need to go to Student Services to make an appointment. Any student requiring an appointment will have an Appointment Preparation Sheet to complete and bring to the scheduled appointment time. Students who have forgotten this will have their appointment rescheduled.
We are confident that most questions can be answered by referring to the St Michael’s Curriculum Booklet and associated Websites. In a 30 minute appointment time it is best to be at an advanced point in career planning as we do not go over the basic subject
selection process again as this is done at the Student and Parent SACE nights.
Combined Parent & Student appointments are best left until after the respective PARENT SACE nights in Week 2 for current Year 10 Parents and Week 3 for current Year 11 parents. There is very limited availability for after school appointments and these only go through to 4:30pm and we hope parents who wish to be involved in these appointments can keep this in mind in their own work planning.
Our goal is to encourage students to be independent and engage parents in the conversations so that life long career planning strategies are developed. As such it is up to individual students to initiate Career Appointments. Many students will be self-sufficient and use the information provided in the Curriculum Booklet to make sound decisions and will not require an individual appointment. We are also very happy to accept emails and/or phone messages. The appointments for the Subject Selection Counselling Days Year 10 on 25 August and Year 11 on 2 September, provide a review session and not career counselling so we encourage students to begin the process now.

YEAR 12 PARENT SATAC NIGHT MONDAY 4 AUGUST This Monday night in the Staff Centre parents of Year 12 students interested in pathways through University and or TAFE are invited to attend a one hour presentation. We will to provide an overview of the key dates, issues and processes so parents are in the loop. Year 12 students will have their own more specific presentation on Thursday 7 August at 9:45am in the Mary MacKillop Centre. It is hoped that on Monday Night, Year 12 students visit the Careers Night displays and ask questions in relation to career choices.
CAREERS NIGHT: MONDAY 4 AUGUST 6:00pm-8:00pm ~ Years 10, 11 and 12 students and families With just under 4 days to go to our own annual Careers Night, we are hoping students now have a list of questions they wish to find the answers to at Careers Night. Whilst some students will wander around in a general sense and may be inspired by an entirely new area, for most students contemplating their future, the event will provide an opportunity to ask the industry representatives some specific questions to fine tune individual Career Planning. Students may wish to know which subjects they will be studying, the projected job vacancies, the cost of the course, the best preparation to secure an apprenticeship etc. It is important students have an idea of their questions and to whom they will direct their questions. As such we hope all students access the Careers Night Program on the Student Services Intranet in the coming week. These programs will be available in hardcopy at the entrance on the night. www.satac.edu.au, www.adelaide.edu.au, www.flinders.edu.au, www.unisa.edu.au and www.tafesa.edu.au. The resourceful Mrs Tidd has secured TAFESA and individual representation of the following popular areas: Justice and Policing, Hair and Beauty, Floristry Retail and Visual Merchandising, Performing Arts and Creative Industries Games Art. University of South Australia will also ensure there are specific representatives from: Human Movement, Exercise, Physiology and Physiotherapy, Visual Arts, Sport and Recreation Management, Tourism and Event Management and Media Arts. There will be an Interactive Corner with a University of Adelaide Robotics and UniSA Wind Turbine display. We have confirmed representation from 34 organisations.

FLINDERS UNITEST Current Year 12 students planning on applying for a course at Flinders University at the end of this year, may be interested in sitting the Flinders uniTEST. By sitting the uniTEST, Flinders will select students based on both an applicant's Year 12 results (60% weighting toward the ATAR score) and uniTEST performance (40%) for eligible courses. Further information on the uniTest and eligible courses can be found at: http://www.flinders.edu.au/future-students/how-to-apply/special-entry/unitest.cfm. It’s free to sit, and students will not be disadvantaged, as it will only take your ATAR if that’s the better option. The uniTest consists of a 95 question multiple choice test looking at (Quantitative Reasoning, Critical Reasoning, Verbal Plausible Reasoning) and will take approximately 2.5 hours. Sample questions can also be found on the link. Students interested in sitting the uniTest, will need to email the following details to Mr Vizaniaris by no later than 4:00pm on Friday 8 August. This information will be forwarded to Flinders University and ACER who administer the test (these details are required to obtain login details for each student): Name, Personal Email (it needs to be a non-school email as all school emails will be wiped from the network at the end of the year), Postal Address. The Flinders uniTest will be conducted on Friday 22 August (end of Week 5) here at St Michael’s College from 1:00pm-3:30pm. See Mr Vizaniaris if you require further information.

OLD SCHOLARS
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Anthony Louzikiotis, Michael Caroscio and Anthony Roccisano ~ Class of 2010
Michael Caroscio, Anthony Louzikiotis and Anthony Roccisano (pictured L – R) began together at St Michael’s in 2006 in Year 8. They completed their schooling together and went on to study Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Adelaide with their final year being completed this year in 2014. Looking back at the years spent at St Michael’s, all three agree that the College prepares students well for university studies. The boys have a vision to assist in bridging the gap between high school and university life in order to make the transition smoother and more enjoyable for students. They hope to do this by working closely with the school and students at college events, class talks and providing advice to students from past experience. They are also keen to show students, particularly those with an interest in
Engineering, what career paths they can follow in engineering disciplines. Anthony, Michael and Anthony are working together on their University Honours project called “Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) Wake Interaction”. Their project is aiming to improve wind turbine/wind farm efficiencies by building knowledge about wind turbine wake and the wake interaction between wind turbines. In addition, the old scholars will be in attendance at the upcoming Careers Night (Monday 4 August) to talk to students and parents about subject selections and possible future career paths.
For further information about the project or University of Adelaide Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering degrees contact Anthony Louzikiotis – Project Manager HAWT Wake Interaction on [email protected].
CONGRATULATIONS TO …
Liam Georgiadis 11PE (below) who is representing St Michael’s College in the Secondary School Sport SA Golf Championships in
Toowoomba, Queensland in August, 2014.
Lachie Hosie 12CU and Sam Paparella 12CU (pictured L - R) who generously gave of their time and assisted with the Auskick program at Star of the Sea School. The boys worked with around sixty 5-8 year olds who absolutely loved having the older boys mentor and coach them. With a very busy Year 12 schedule, all concerned at Star of the Sea were very appreciative of the time and effort that Lachie and Sam gave. Thank you and well done Lachie and Sam for your cooperative community spirit.
