Pastor’s Page
Dear Church,
I will be presenting the complete Gospel of Mark on Saturday, April 6 at 2 pm. All are invited
to experience the three-year ministry of Jesus, told only in the words of scripture, and told
with all the words of scripture. Expect “Aha!” moments, surprising stories, and new insights.
The Gospel According to Mark is widely believed to be the earliest one written, and most
scholars think that Matthew and Luke’s Gospels used Mark as a source. Fast-moving, vivid in
its details, and at times even funny, Mark shows Jesus at his most human. It focuses on his
relationship with his disciples and his obedience to God.
For decades after Jesus’ death and resurrection, the stories of his life and teaching were
handed down orally--by the spoken word. Before many in the population could read, they
heard the “good news.” This performance, presented from memory, is a chance to hear the
scriptures as they were first proclaimed.
People of all faith traditions (and no faith background) are welcome. The presentation is
recommended for adults and children age 10 and older at their parents’ discretion. The
presentation runs about 2 ¼ hours, including an intermission.
The presentations will be held in the meetinghouse. The suggested donation is $20 and all
proceeds will benefit the Meetinghouse Restoration Fund. To reserve seats, go to
www.nmchurch.org, email the office, or call 860-354-8232. The confirmation class and their
sponsors are especially invited and the suggested donation will be waived for them. A Q&A
session will follow for those interested.
The presentation was directed by Julia Gibson, who has directed with the Rattlestick, Barrow
Street Theatre Company and Epic Theatre Company in New York City, and at Chautauqua
Theatre Company, Portland Stage, Gulfshore Playhouse and other theatres.
I really hope to see you here!
Blessings,

Meetinghouse Restoration Project
The Meetinghouse Restoration Committee continues to meet frequently and drive the
project forward. Members are Pam Cafiero, Susan Chapin, Dave Eherts, Dave Elmore, Jerry
King, Dan Martin, Barbara McGiver, Nick Pouder, Evelyn Sandberg, Jeff Vill, Shannon Wall,
and John Wittmann.
Construction
We are currently preparing all the documents to apply for a $100,000 matching grant from
the State Office of Historical Preservation. This grant can be completed when we have
received:
Final engineering design: March 22 Cost estimate: April 5
Our goal is to apply for the grant by April 10; we should then know by the beginning of May if
the application has been approved.
Communications
In parallel, the MRC is planning for additional communications re: the $40,000 matching
grant which has been offered by a generous church family. As of March 18, we have a total
of $24,661; in addition, one generous church member has given stock.
In mid-April, letters will go out to current members and friends of the Congregation, and to
former church members and friends. Care will be taken not to send letters to those who have
recently given money or pledges.
We investigated participating in the Connecticut Community Foundation’s “Give Local”
donation program and found that we can’t participate for the purpose of restoring the
church.
The committee is pursuing all the different ways that people can give including cash, credit
card, online payments, and payments into an account that allows them to get tax
deduction. We are also planning to meet with individuals in the community who value
historical preservation and ask for their support.
A member of the MRC is talking about the project and what the church means to him/her at
the worship service each week. We will also be reading the letters of support we have
received from community leaders that will be included in the grant application.
Finance
Once we receive the engineering design and the cost estimates, we will have a better idea
of where we are and how much we will actually need.
Ken Papp and Evelyn Le Cates have been going through all the accounts and updating
them. During the course of their work, additional Raise the Roof money was found that had
been erroneously stored in the General Fund. Ken continues to work through the church
finances to prepare for an audit, but a lot of the work is done already. The current balance
of the Raise the Roof fund is $417,000.

Other grants
Fund for Sacred Places- This other grant is worth looking at for Phase 2 projects. Applications
are due in May for matching grants up to $250,000. These grants are given to churches for
major capital projects, for which the church has not already started raising money. Thus, for
us, this would have to be a future project such as repair of the steeple. The fund has been
running under a 3-year program funded by the Lilly Foundation; this is the third and perhaps
last year. It is not clear if they will continue after that, so there is urgency and the MRC will
decide this week if we will apply or not. As part of the program, lay leaders are trained on
how to conduct capital campaigns, so there could be long-term benefit
Matching Gift Challenge
A generous church family has offered a matching gift of $40,000 if the church is able to raise
$40,000 in new gifts by June 1, 2019. The gifts must be paid this year, and they will be
matched only if we can raise the full $40,000. Please prayerfully consider this and complete
the pledge form below. You may pay your pledge any time between now and June—but it
would be helpful to know soon what your plans are. The need is urgent—please help as you
are able. Thank you!

Board of Trustees
The first 60 days of 2019 have seen well more than a year’s share of plumbing issues in the
Parish House, Church building, and Parsonage (rental):
Replace Parish House men’s room toilet – obstruction, worn out
Replace the Parish House men’s room urinal flush meter due to malfunction
Replace Parish House zone 5 circulator pump – worn out
Replace Parish House zone 2 circulator pump – worn out
Replace Parish House automatic water feeder for heat system – worn out
Replace Parish House water softener control head – worn out
Replace Parsonage washing machine – worn out, too expensive to fix
Replace Parsonage kitchen sink faucet assembly – rusted away
Replace several sections of perforated steam pipe in Church boiler room
Replace flush mechanism in Church men’s room bathroom toilet
Our trusted and dedicated cleaning services owner Serafin (Serf) has expertly cleaned and
refinished the Parish House bathroom floors to a degree not seen and a very long time.
The Homeless Shelter completed the month of February without a hitch except for our being
unaware that when the “auto-start” building alarm system did its thing at 2300 Hours, it in
essence blasted them right out of their sleeping bags. We fixed that by temporarily changing
the times to 2130 Hours and all was well. It’s now back to standard times of 2300 Hours to
0600 Hours daily. The alarm takes care of motion, heat, and fire for the whole building. Only
the motion sensor was turned off in Fellowship Hall for the month. It was the other upstairs
motion sensors that caused the issue because we had to leave them active. Fire and water
sensors were never altered.

Women’s Ministry
The Annual Retreat was held in March at Silver Lake Conference Center. It was a weekend
of spiritual renewal and fun for the large group of women in attendance.
New Members:
In addition to the people highlighted last month, Frederick Camp also joined our
church on Sunday, February 24.
Fred was born in New Milford Hospital in
1937 and lived in New Preston all his life,
until moving to New Milford around 20
years ago. After graduating from
Washington High School, Fred entered
the US Air Force, serving in early
warning radar on the DEW line in
Iceland. During the cold war, they
stopped the Russian bombers. He
married in 1960, had two sons, and
later was divorced. He retired from
Whiteheads’ Farm in Washington
Depot at age 62 after 30 years. He is
active in town activities as a twenty-
year member of St. Peter’s Masons,
and is a more recent member of the
Oddfellows New Milford and the
American Legion, New Milford.

Platelet and Blood Drive
Church member Nicole Lindberg is preparing to have a new and promising
immunotherapy treatment for leukemia under the care of the leading doctor in this
field. Until mid-April at least, she will receive blood transfusions every two days at
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. The transfusions require a lot
of blood and, in particular, platelets.
Nicole turned 27 years old on March 20. For her birthday, she asked friends to donate
platelets. MSKCC allows donations to go to specific patients if the donation is given
at their Donor Room at 1250 First Avenue. People with all blood types can give
platelets. The donation takes 2 ½ hours, and five hours of free parking is included.
Platelets last only five days, so the best way to help Nicole would be for her to have a
couple of donors every other day. If 30 people from the church each donated
once, she would be covered until she is able to get the next stage of the treatment.
Or, perhaps 15 pairs of people—friends, family—could go together and enjoy some
time in the city afterwards. Everything you need to know about this is at this website:
https://www.mskcc.org/about/get-involved/donating-blood
Be sure to look at the requirements for donors, people who may not be allowed to
donate based on medical history or current medications, age requirements, and
hours for platelet donations. Some of the guidelines have changed in the last few
years, so if you were told in the past that you were not eligible to donate, check
again, as you may now be allowed to do so.
If you have questions or want to schedule an appointment, please contact Joe
Licata at 212-639-8177; [email protected]. He will coordinate so that Nicole has the
right number of people each day; this way, she will get the platelets donated for her.
If you would like to help but aren’t able to go into the city, donations at any blood
bank would be very much appreciated. There is a shortage everywhere, and
another person would benefit.
Let’s show Nicole the love and “be the church” for her and her family!

The Chapel Stitchers
The Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet on April 14, the second Sunday of the month. All are
welcome - beginner and/or advanced stitchers. Our informal meetings are a great place to
relax, enjoy friendships, share experiences, and learn from some long time experts! Join us as
we gather in the chapel for a time of faith and fellowship at 11:30am. If you need a shawl, or
know someone who does, please call the church office or see Leslie Schlemmer. Donations
of yarn are always welcome.
Therapeutic Benefits of Knitting for Mind and Body
Knitting has therapeutic benefits for both the mind and the body.
Traditional western medicine tends to treat the body and not the mind, but
research has shown that a person’s thought processes and attitude has a
significant impact on health, recovery, and well-being.
Therapeutic knitting deals with issues of loneliness, social isolation, self-esteem,
stress/anxiety, and an unoccupied mind that’s left to ruminate on problems.
It can boost confidence, self-esteem, motivation and mood.
It can change negative thoughts and attitudes into positive ones.
Whether you are dealing with the daily ups and downs of a stressful, busy life,
or dealing with chronic health issues, we all could benefit from reducing the
amount of stress we experience in our daily lives.
Being able to ‘switch off’ for a short time every day gives the mind a break and
is beneficial to well-being. So take some time for yourself every day, and knit-
you will be happy that you did.

Lawn Mowing Sign-up
The Trustees have asked for volunteers to
mow our very limited lawn area each
weekend from April through October.
There will be a sign-up sheet at coffee
hour. This effort saves the church quite a
bit of money each summer. Volunteers will
be sent a reminder of the date they have
chosen. Thank you for helping to keep our
church grounds inviting!
Thank you!
to Pete Richardson and Bill Jackson for their help around the church and Parish House.
to Dawn Kraft for her help in the office.
Social Concerns and Missions Committee
Our congregation is actively involved with the Church World Service Blanket Program. For many years, our church has been helping to keep our neighbors warm by providing blankets to families here in the United States and around the world.
A warm Mother’s Day gift – each $10.00 donation to Church World Service provides a special blanket to those who have been displaced by disaster. It brings with it a message of warmth for the body and the gentle comfort of knowing someone somewhere cares. Make your gift in honor or in memory of your mother, grandmother or another special woman in your life. Mother’s Day cards will be available at Coffee Hour April 28, May 5, and Mother’s Day, May 12.

Pastoral Search
Per our constitution:
SECTION 4. Pastoral Search Committee: When a vacancy occurs in the Pastoral duties
of this Church, a Pastoral Search Committee shall be formed. This committee shall
consist of twelve members including: an Ordained Minister (if available), Moderator or
Vice Moderator, a Deacon, a Trustee, a member of the Christian Education
Committee, and seven members at large (one of which shall be a member of a
church youth group, if (available) to be elected at an Annual, Regular, or Special
Church Meeting. The purpose of this committee is to review profiles, interview and
recommend a candidate to the Church at a meeting called by the General Church
Committee. Church members present shall vote by written ballot to determine
whether or not to issue a call to the recommended candidate.
Accordingly, at the 2019 Annual Meeting, held on Sunday, February 24, the following church
members were elected to the Search Committee:
Pat Nicholas (Ordained Minister)
Susan Chapin (Moderator)
Mike Curley (Deacon)
Bill Jackson (Trustee)
Jessica Menkes (Christian Education)
Jessica Baranowski (Youth)
Sarah Albright
Jason Davis
Allen Holcomb
Barbara McGiver
Doris Papp
Scott Steele
Search Committee Message to the Congregation:
The Search Committee has met twice, and we are excited to get started with this new
chapter of our church. On March 31, we will be sending out a survey to all church-goers to
ask for feedback. We will use this valuable information to gauge what is important to our
church body as we look for a pastor who will be a perfect fit. Please see any member of the
Search Committee with any questions.

Investment Committee
The investment accounts continue to improve as the stock market continues its recovery.
The increase across all five accounts is over 5% through February. Accounts include the
Endowment Fund, the Investment Fund, the SJ Johnson Fund, the A. Russell Ayre Scholarship
Fund, and Maintenance/Raise the Roof Fund.
The invested funds of the church are the result of legacy gifts given by members of the
church dating back to the 1800’s. We have recently received gifts from two estates to help
bolster these funds. If you are doing estate planning, please consider including the church in
your will. By doing so you will be helping to keep the church on a strong financial footing.
You can find a form on page 19 of this newsletter.
As the tax deadline approaches this month, you might consider other tax saving measures.
Consider donating highly appreciated stock to the church to meet your pledge instead of
cash. You will be able to meet your annual pledge or Raise the Roof pledge while saving on
the capital gains tax that you would have if the same stock were sold. If you itemize, you get
a deduction for the fair market value as well.
If you have an IRA and have reached at least 70.5 years old, you are required to take
required minimum distributions each year from the IRA. Did you know you can save a
potential increase in your taxes by making this distribution a “qualified charitable
distribution?” Instead of increasing your taxable income, the donation goes directly to a
qualified charity like the church.
Discuss these options with your financial advisor. For additional general information, contact
the Investment committee at [email protected].
Dave Elmore, Chair
A.Russell Ayre Scholarship Committee
Scholarship applications are now available online at the church website or through New
Milford High School. They have been mailed to the home address of FCC seniors; extra

Men’s Breakfast
On Saturday, April 20 we’ll begin cooking at 7:45, so that we’re ready to eat at 8:30. Bring a
friend if you’d like, and pot-luck contributions are always welcome. Please contact Dan
Martin for more information, or to be added to the email reminder list.
Offerings / Pledges
For those of you who checked off on your pledge form that you wanted envelopes, they are
in the back of the Sanctuary. When using envelopes, please be sure to write your name
and/or number on them! If you have any questions regarding your General Fund giving, feel
free to email Deb Staib, Financial Secretary [email protected]; for Raise the Roof
contribution questions, please contact Evelyn LeCates [email protected]
Sunday Bulletins
Articles are due to Nicole Henderson [email protected] by Tuesday for the weekly
Parish Notes.

Music Committee
The Senior Choir is preparing special music for the Easter season. The choir will perform on
Maundy Thursday as well as Palm Sunday and Easter.
Sarah Fay provided music for the Ash Wednesday service, which Rev Wall held in the chapel.

Steeple
We hope that everyone enjoys the convenience of having our newsletter available online.
This saves hundreds of dollars in the church budget, as well as helping our environment by
using less paper, ink and other precious resources. Hard copies will be available in the back
of the Sanctuary, side entrance of church and in the Parish House hallway. Please contact
Nicole Henderson at the church office if you need to make different arrangements.
Please save the Calendar page at the
front of each issue for reminders of
upcoming church meetings and events.
Articles and news for the May issue should be sent to Jan Wittmann ([email protected])
by Monday, April 15 for inclusion.

Baby Bundles
Baby Bundles is a program which each month provides diapers to families in need in New
Milford. Our church supports this mission through the collection of money and diapers on the
2nd Sunday each month. Please consider bringing packages of diapers and/or baby wipes
to the church for collection, or make a monetary donation using the envelope provided in the bulletin.
If you have any questions please contact Jan McCarthy, Baby Bundles Chairperson, at
[email protected] . Help is needed to supervise the double doors in the Parish
House from 4:30 - 5:30 PM on Baby Bundles distribution Wednesdays. If you have the time to
volunteer, please contact Jan McCarthy or call Nicole Henderson at the Church
office. Thank you!
Emergency Shelters
A reminder from CERT, New Milford’s Community Emergency Response Team: During a
widespread power failure or other town emergency, would you know how to find out if an
emergency shelter is open and where it is? It’s easy – just call 2-1-1. The shelter will provide
meals and a safe place to sleep, but there are some things you should bring with you. You
will need emergency contact and medical information, a blanket and pillow, clothes for a
couple of days, personal hygiene items, medications and some food items if you have
dietary restrictions. Make sure you bring medical necessities such as glasses, walkers, hearing
aids, etc. And don’t forget to pack something to occupy your time, like reading materials,
cell phones, games or crafts. It’s always good to have a packed bag ready to grab and go
in any emergency but especially now as we head into winter weather. Be prepared – stay
safe!
Constant Contact
The Board of Deacons publishes an e-mail newsletter periodically to the congregation. The
First Congregational Church of New Milford Happenings tries to highlight upcoming events
and dates within the church. It does not replace the content of The Steeple sent to you via
the U.S. Postal Service. If you currently do not currently receive this via e-mail and would like
to, please e-mail [email protected] to be added to the mailing list, or call the church
office with your updated e-mail address. Thank you.

Planned Giving
That’s the name that has come to be associated with gifts to your church or other charity
that happen after your lifetime. Simply put, you plan now, for a gift that will occur later. In our
church, we recognize those who have declared they have arranged for a planned gift by
receiving them as members of the Deacon Roger Sherman Society. (We also give special
recognition to our Sunday School Teachers, our Deacons, the people who help collate and
mail the Steeple, and so on.)
There are many ways to make a planned gift, and depending on your unique
circumstances, some methods are better for you and for the church than others. Contact
the Church Office for more details. The simplest and most direct way to make a planned gift
is to include the church as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy. Your insurance agent
can guide you on the specific forms and options available from your insurance company.
Just tell them you want to add a beneficiary; the agent will take it from there.
When you have arranged your planned gift, be sure to let one of our Pastors know – no
details, just that you made arrangements – so we can appropriately recognize your
generosity. For your convenience, you may use the form below.

Food Pantry
Non-perishable foods are gratefully accepted, but cleaning supplies are also needed.

the little bars of soap and bottles of shampoo provided by hotels, please take and donate
them! You may leave donations in the hutch by the side entrance to the sanctuary, and
they will be brought to the New Milford Social Services office for distribution to those in need.
The first Sunday of each month is Food Pantry Sunday - there are envelopes tucked into the
bulletins for monetary contributions as well.
