ask for frivolous things I only want in order to satisfy myself. In Scripture, God works miracles intentionally, to accomplish his purposes for creation and redemp-tion. I am not promised miracles for selfish, insignifi-cant purposes. Miracles are actually rare, even in the Bible. They’re not sprinkled into our lives like pepper from the shaker. God uses his power to accomplish his purposes for the world and for his glory—not simply for my convenience.

So we must try to remember that God is at work for our good, even when personal miracles aren’t granted. Trust him, look for his grace, ask for eyes to see what he is doing and join him in the task of repairing the world. Even when the ax head lies heavy at the river’s bottom.

See you Sunday.

Tim

Sisters and Brothers,

I like the little story in the book of 2 Kings, the one about the ax head that floats. It’s an episode in the saga of Elisha.

Since they’d outgrown their building, Elisha was work-ing with a group of student-prophets to build a new meeting house out of logs. They had picked out a spot beside the Jordan River, and they had begun cutting down trees, when the head flew off an ax swung by one of the young students. The iron head fell into the deep river and sunk to the bottom. “Oh, no!” he cried. “That ax wasn’t even mine. It was borrowed!”

“Exactly where did it fall?” Elisha asked. The man of God threw a stick into the water, and the ax head float-ed to the surface and sat there like a fishing bobber. “Grab it,” Elisha said.

Everybody knows ax heads don’t float, but that one did. It was a miracle.

This is precisely the kind of miracle I want in my life. Not so much the walking-on-water kind of miracle, the dead-raising or the sun-standing-still kind of thing. I want more miracles for the everyday, minor kind of stuff: power to find lost car keys, to start my stupid Weed-Eater, to erase stubborn carpet stains, to turn all the traffic lights green. They say nothing is too big for God—or too small. God cares about me—right?—and he sees and knows all my frustrations. Nothing is too small to take before God. Jesus himself said all we have to do is ask. Ask and it shall be given.

But is it always right to pray for dumb stuff? Sometimes I stop myself. While there are children of God around the world in desperate circumstances, starving and praying for bread—should I go knocking on God’s door as I do, asking for a closer parking place at the mall or better Wi-Fi?

Jesus did say we should ask—just ask—and I do. I can hardly stop myself. When I have a need (big or small), something in me instinctively turns the problem into a prayer. “Lord, help me,” I say a thousand times a day, sometimes for better reasons than others. Jesus said ask, seek, knock, and I do. Don’t even have to tell me twice.

But I don’t get everything I ask for. My ax heads don’t float, borrowed or not. Why don’t I see more everyday miracles? According to the book of James, I don’t re-ceive what I ask for because I ask “wrongly” (4.2b-3). I

WORSHIP SCHEDULE

________________________________________________

______________________________________________

There will not be an event for the month of July. We will be going to Bardstown on August 6th at 9:00 am. If you have not signed up, please do so ASAP. We will need to schedule transportation and reserve tickets to the play “The Stephen Foster Sto-ry.” We will also be having lunch at Mammies kitchen. For more information contact Jane Clark or Darleen Atkerson.

Have you ever thought about sharing your faith with

someone? It is hard to leave the comfort of our group of

friends but really all we have to do is walk across the

room or ballfield or our yard. During the month of August,

on Sunday nights in place of evening worship, we can par-

ticipate in a 4-week study entitled Just Walk Across the

Room based on the book by the same title by Bill Hybels.

Pastor Bill Hybel says, “It is my firm conviction is that the

highest value in personal evangelism is being attuned to

and cooperative with the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

This means playing only the role you are intended to play

– walking when the Spirit says to walk, talking when the

Spirit says to talk, and falling silent when the Spirit sug-

gests that you’ve already said enough. Today, the goal for

every Christian is to reflect Christ’s love and follow his

example by taking simple walks across rooms – leaving

our circles of comfort and extending hands of care, com-

passion, and inclusiveness to people living far from God. “

Since this is a small group study, host homes are needed so we can all be in a group of 8 to 12 people. Host homes will need to be willing to open their home to others for the study, show the DVD and lead the discussion. You can decide if you want to provide refreshments or not. The study is video driven with a 15-18 minute teaching session followed by a discussion time. All participants will have a leader’s guide with the questions and some weekly con-tent. All the groups do not need to meet on Sunday eve-nings, you can decide when you would like to meet. If you would be willing to serve as a host home, please contact me at church (270) 529-5221 or email me at [email protected]. I think this study will be a blessing for us as a church and challenge us to share our faith with others and draw closer to God. Serving Together,

Warren Weeks

Join us for CARE night on Sunday, July 10th at

4:00 pm. Activities will begin in the Fellowship

Hall. This will be a great opportunity to follow-up

with families whose children came to Vacation

Bible School. We will also follow up with recent

guests and minister to our members. Come and

join us in showing Christ’s love to others!

There will be no Evening Service on Sunday, July 3.

Enjoy spending time with your family!

Paul’s words remind me so often that for all the con-versations I’m blessed to have with kids about who God is and the grace that only He can give so freely that it is still all in His power and for His glory when anyone comes to a saving relationship with Him. Paul says, “If keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.” Being a good person, keeping the law, attending VBS, talk-ing with the pastor or Children’s leader never saves a child – that can only come from God’s power and spirit moving in the life of a child and he/she receiving the free gift of grace that’s been extended.

The power we do have is to plant and water seeds. The power we do have is to continue to pray for all of the kids, just as we prayed for them before VBS. The power we do have is to continue living our lives in a way that reflects what God is doing in us. On the last day of VBS our kids learned that God’s grace is a for-ever kind of grace. Again, God is the only one who has the power to continuously pour out grace to us, but for some of the kids who attended they will know that forever kind of grace because of how we allow God to use us in the days and weeks after VBS is over. Here are more of Paul’s words that I’m reminded of after any major event, my prayer is that they will encour-age you to continue praying, sharing, and living out the Gospel even though our church building has be-come a little more quiet yet again.

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9

Nichole Buckman

Director of Children’s Ministry

I really cannot believe that another VBS is in the books. On the Saturday evening before VBS began I remember telling my husband Matt, “Well, now that VBS is over…” The week of VBS is good, long, and challenging work. I could argue the time leading up to it is even more so all of those qualities. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE VBS week. I have said it be-fore, and I will again say that for me it’s “the most wonderful time of the year.” Our church building fills up with life, joy, laughter and excitement for an entire week. For the whole week we get to share the Good News over and over again through all the different ways that kids learn, but again before the week even starts I feel like the work is done.

You might think I’m talking crazy at this point, but hear me out. Our leaders and myself can only put in so much time, effort and energy towards helping kids know and love Christ as their Savior. We can’t save them. Our hope is that they become Christians and surrender their lives to God, but no matter how many prayers, how many lessons, how many activi-ties, or how many songs are presented the bottom line is we can’t save them.

I shared these words that Paul wrote with our lead-ers regarding God’s grace one morning during our stand up meeting time:

“For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God. My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.” Galatians 2:19-21

And some will leave Woodburn and lead worship ministries—volunteer, part time and full time. There’s more to the answer to my young worship leaders’ question: 1. We are in the process of recording our first

WBC Worship Ministry, and all of the money taken in from that project will go to fund the worship ministry of our next church plant.

2. Several of our WBC worship ministry servants go and lead/serve our existing church plants.

3. The pastors and ministry leaders from our church plants will often call or visit to ask for counsel—just like they do with the rest of our staff.

4. At least once a month I try and mention in a rehearsal that I hope those I serve are pray-ing about whether or not they are being called to be part of a church plant.

5. And finally, I pray for God to call out musicians and technicians who will not be satisfied with anything less than wholehearted devotion to taking people boldly to the throne of grace.

If you feel like God is calling, I would love to sit down and talk. Maybe you will be part of the Leadership Academy of Music (where we will teach music lessons) or the Worship Leader Academy (where we teach how to lead worship) this fall. Maybe we just need to find your next step. However I can help, my heart is to do it. Love you all so much. I can’t wait to see what happens as God continues to call out worship leading church planting Christ followers from our church family! Grace. Peace. Rod

One of our young worship leaders recently texted me: “In what way is the worship ministry involved with church planting?” I LOVE THAT QUESTION! I thought some of you might wonder the same thing, so here goes.

My hope from the first step I took on the campus of WBC was to raise up worship leaders who would go plant churches. It shapes the way I think about virtu-ally every part of my ministry. Who will be the point person for the worship team in our next 5-10 church plants? Who will play keys, guitar, and drums? Who will run sound, screens, and lights? That’s why, before I took the first step on our cam-pus, my task was to learn from friends who were familiar with great “church planting churches.” First and foremost, they all said, create a great mod-el of healthy worship. Have healthy teams—vocalists, instrumentalists, and tech ministry. Make the worship spaces dynamic and beautiful, engaging for first-time guests. Build relationships with area musicians. And so, for 3 years now, we’ve been working to do those things. As of the day I write this article, 5 people have told me they feel called to be a worship leader/worship pastor. It's working. Hallelujah! You may have wondered, from time to time, why there are so many of us on the platform leading worship—sometimes as many as 5 singers and 7 in-strumentalists. They are learning to lead a song, a service or a ministry. Many will stay and continue leading songs or ser-vices—in Sanctuary, Cafe, and Student services, not to mention future gatherings we will start since all of our Sunday morning services are all full.

In July a team of 36 people from Woodburn Baptist Church will leave the Nashville airport and travel to the small Caribbean nation of Haiti. In 2010, Port-au-Prince was devastated by an earthquake that killed 250,000 people and leveled most of the city. In 2014 and group of 19 went from Woodburn Baptist Church to Bertin, Haiti to help with restoration efforts with a local church. This year’s trip is in continuation of that trip two years ago. We will go back to the church in Bertin to walk alongside Pastor Clemente as we help build God’s church in Haiti. One of our teams will fo-cus on construction efforts. Others will focus on chil-dren’s ministry, orphanage ministry, evangelism, and pastoral training. Part of the 36 member team will spend the week in Les Cayes, Haiti to work with Pas-tor Jean Delcy to bring clean water to the region. We will take 100 water filters and work through the local church there to bring clean water to the village. Part of the project is to build a community water collec-tion site to provide clean water to more people. This is a huge team and a huge vision for Haiti. I can’t wait to see how God uses our team and the work He does through us. Please pray for the trip as we lead up to July 7-14 and while we are there.

The team that will be going is:

Bertin: Josh Baldauff, Ashley Brinkley, Kaley Bur-nette, Cami Cornell, Linda Cornell, Hope Donnelly, Catherine Ellis, Molli Guelde, Tim Harris, Kacy Harris, Mindy Harrison, Brett Hightower, Emma Hightower, Meredith Hightower, Becky Johnson, Holly Logsdon, Ari Mayhall, Shelby Newton, Emily Weeks, Ashley White, Candace Willingham, Chip Willingham, Sydney Willingham, Chris Willingham
