Story (Part 2): Orientation
Introduction
• Olivia Overseer, a Senior Library Assistant at the Steppings Library, is the supervisor for part-time shelvers at the library
• A new shelver, Sid Stack, has been recruited and Olivia is responsible for providing his orientation
• It is Sid’s first day in his new workplace
Orientation process• Olivia has provided Sid with an
induction pack which has been tailored for part-time workers
• She has introduced Sid to his fellow colleagues and arranged a ‘welcome’ lunch for him and his immediate co-workers
• Olivia has also introduced Sid to one of the Library Assistants who is to be Sid’s ‘buddy’
Job roles• During Olivia’s discussion with Sid about
his shelving job role, it has become apparent that Sid’s main shelving experience is from working at a local health library
• The health library in which Sid worked used the National Library of Medicine classification system for books
• However, the Steppings Library books have been classified with the Dewey Decimal classification system
• Sid has never shelved books in accordance with the Dewey Decimal classification system
Dewey Decimal classification• Olivia assumes that Sid will easily be
able to transfer his knowledge of using the National Library of Medicine system to understand the Dewey system
• In order to help Sid to familiarise himself with the Dewey system, Olivia provides him with a Dewey classification user’s guide
• However, Sid appears to be overwhelmed by the information that he has been given
