Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE- approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch producesbetween 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipeused by the dyer remains constant, and isfollowed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will varyfrom batch to batch. However production ismatched back to the original or mastersample to ensure that the colour remains‘within a commercial tolerance’.This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professionaljudgement of the head dyer based on his/herexperience. A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensureperfect colour matching it is advisable that asingle width be used in any installationrequiring exact colour matching.N.B. Carpets which are laid with the piletravelling in different directions, even thoughthey be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers maynot be from the same batch as currentproduction and therefore should be used as aguide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, whichis created during production when spun yarnis cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall ontothe surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibreis only a small fraction of the total fibrecontained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuouspile is pulled through the primary backing ofthe carpet. This is usually due to some localcondition, possibly some sharp object whichhas caught in a loop in situ and has resultedin a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with bytrimming the offending end level with therest of the pile. They should not be left as thiscould result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work itsway to the surface and stand proud of the restof the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. Jshaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedialaction merely requires that the offending tuftsbe scissor trimmed level with the rest of thepile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpethas become crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation oflight and dark patches on the carpet. This willoccur on all pile fabrics but can be morenoticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not bedisguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have thecapacity to store it. Static is caused by thebuild up of static electricity upon personnelin a dry environment and is discharged whena person makes contact with an object whichcan conduct electricity (i.e. door handle orfiling cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensitydepending upon the individual, air humidityand the contact materials. Static is moreusually associated with synthetic materials asthey do not retain moisture very well but itcan and does occur with wool in very dryroom conditions.Preventative measures include theintroduction of moisture into the room or insitu carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade inuse. The degree of fade can vary dependingon the colour chosen and the local conditionsto which the carpet is subjected.Fading can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light which is found in daylight, but isaccelerated when sunlight shines directlyonto the carpet. This has the effect oflightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposedto such conditions just as you would protectother furniture or fabrics.A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or napof the carpet changes direction and thusreflects light at different angles showing theeffects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as‘watermarking’. This can happen to everycarpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indianor even Coir Matting. Like shading it can bemore apparent on plain carpet because heavypatterns can disguise the effects. It can occurquite quickly after installation. A tremendousamount of research has been carried out overmany years by many institutes to determinethe cause of this phenomenon but none of ithas proved conclusive. There is no commonlyknown manufacturing process which cancause or cure this phenomenon and thereforeit is not a manufacturing fault. For furtherinformation please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy pointload, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not toindent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile torecover. In the case of very heavy loads inplace for a considerable time, the recoverytime can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only thepile of the carpet that becomes indented. theunderlay will also indent and the backing ofthe carpet may also distort into theindentation in the underlay. Some underlay’swill recover well and some less welldepending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.The use of cups below furniture legs canspread the load and the net result is a largerarea of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939and many manufacturers will have data onthis aspect of carpet performance. In this testthe carpet is loaded for 24 hours and thedegree of recovery is measured after 1 hourand 24 hours. Since there are so manydifferent underlay’s however, it is very rarefor the recovery from a heavy static load to beevaluated on carpet and underlay.Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaningwith a rotating brush machine) will speed uprecovery but in the case of seriousindentations the use of an iron and damp clothor a steam iron together with a blunt darningneedle to carefully tease up the pile can bebeneficial. Care must be take not to over wetthe carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of trafficwhich eventually flattens the pile particularlyin the main areas of use. All pile fabrics willflatten to greater or lesser degree dependanton the amount of traffic to which it issubjected and the construction (tuftdensity/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some localcondition to which the carpet has beensubjected to, or maintenance, or lack ofmaintenance programme. There is nothing weas manufacturers can do to prevent soiling inuse. There are several types of soiling whichare quite common:Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave astain. In such instances, professional helpshould be sought.Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leavesticky soap residues in the fibres which canresult in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from theobvious soiled edges, at gaping skirtingboards for instance, dark lines appearing onsurface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards.Sometimes the shape of floorboards can beseen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimesshows itself as spots on the carpet, this is dueto the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both inthe underlay and the carpet, leaving dustdeposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paperis essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advisethe consumer when the carpet is measured ofany poorly fitting doors, skirtings, orfloorboards and the consumers responsibilityto ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if aresulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes threeloop heights to create informal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for hightraffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat

weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a

wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Carpet types

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

Lyrical style from Vorwerk

It’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll but...

The Fascination collection from Vorwerk Carpets presentsretailers the opportunity to move into the world of high stylewith 10 sumptuous textures and designs with attractive prices.

Launched for 2009, Lyrica is a stunning new design within theportfolio that provides the mainstay of the German

manufacturer’s approach to the UK market. Alongside theworld famous Ulf Moritz range and the experimental,

constantly developing Evolution collection, Fascination is amixture of plain, textured and patterned carpets designed to

stimulate and up the ante in carpet for everyday living.

Lyrica will provide a great introduction to the Vorwerk brandfor customers more used to beige twist and cut piles, but adds

a dash of glamour with a shimmering lustre. With thetrademark Saxony ‘soft as silk’ touch, Lyrica in 100% polyamideis offered in a total of 16 colours with an overriding warm feel,

topped off by adventurous shades of red and green.

Ian Hammond,Vorwerk Carpets, comments: “Lyrica hasbecome one of our most popular carpets on UK shores as this

is undoubtedly due to its subtle take on a nation’s favourite. For consumers, the shimmering effect of the carpet is a great

King James’s School in Almondbury is celebrating its 400th year, yet has chosen to keep right up to date by selecting Momentum

carpet from Heckmondwike FB.

Built in 1608, the school took the decision to create a refreshinglyup-to-date look to its new IT suite. After careful consideration,

Momentum from Heckmondwike FB was felt to offer the best all-round performance.

The range is available in 12 colours and features a striking criss-cross design. As well as being hardwearing and therefore suitable

for heavy traffic, Momentum offers antistatic properties, whichwas a requirement for the new IT suite. Momentum has passedthe ISO 6356 Body Walking Test that is an assessment of static

electrical propensity and is therefore suitable for computerrooms. The British-made heavy contract broadloom carpet will

not ravel or fray and its dust-trapping properties will againprovide huge benefits to the school.

Powerful performance in a can is the name of the game for Floorwise’s range of fitterfriendly spray adhesives. Floorwise F599 Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive is a multi-tasking

wonder, capable of sticking everything from carpet tiles to PU underlay, felt underlay, corkand paper to substrates ranging from wood to concrete, stone, brickwork and plaster.

F599 features more adhesive than comparable cans from other suppliers, meaning abetter and thicker coverage per can. In fact, F599 can cover up to 3m2 from a 500ml canwith a stronger bond. And more adhesive means less solvents to dry out, so F599 takes

just 30 seconds to develop tack in the summer months and in our inclement winters, theperformance is even better with F599 taking just a fifth of the time when compared to

most other sprays.

F599 is joined by Floorwise’s new F592 Contact Spray Adhesive, which has beenformulated to bond carpets, carpet tiles, most vinyl floorcoverings, PVC skirting, fabrics,

cork, paper, underlay, felts and much more.

With a high solids/low solvent ratio, just like its heavy duty F599 sibling, F592 offers greatcoverage from a 500ml can with a thick coating of up to 3m2 giving a strong bond that

gives complete peace of mind.

With a record number of flooring companies losing money, and overallbusiness values plummeting to the extent that almost half are now worthless than half their value of 12 months ago, it’s difficult to find much goodnews. However a new study by industry analysts Plimsoll Publishing, suggests that the current economic downturn represents one of thebiggest opportunities in a generation, if you have the courage and thecapital.

The study has rated each of the UK’s leading 1000 Floor Coveringscompanies on their acquisition attractiveness. It found that 137 companiesare “ripe for the picking” based on a combined scoring system, incorporating overall financial strength, ownership, valuation and futurepotential. These 137 companies are all privately owned, yet are showing aserious deterioration in the financial performance.

David Pattison, Senior Analyst at Plimsoll, explains the results, “What wehave indentified here is a group of ‘wounded animals’, many of thesebusinesses have a long and distinguished history, yet their recentperformance has deteriorated. By definition these are classic acquisitions.Anyone looking to grow their own company through acquisition should belooking for businesses that are currently undervalued yet, with help, can beturned around.”

However, as Pattison points out, “this will not be easy. Many will need rapidand deep cost cutting to get them back on a firm financial footing.Wecould see as many as 3000 jobs go over the next 12 to 24 months asthese companies shrink to ensure their survival.”

Yet despite this dour prediction Pattison sees a massive opportunity in theUK Floor Coverings market. “The current market conditions havepresented an unprecedented set of opportunities to buy into a businessthat even a year ago would have been unaffordable. We know of at least537 companies within the industry, who have the cash to spend and couldaid these 137 ailing businesses and ensure their survival.”

Brintons launch design inspiration service

According to figures released by the Department for Communities and LocalGovernment, the average cost of a detached house rose by 4.9% between December2008 and January 2009, thereby bucking the downward trend but the price of a terracedhouse dropped by an average 2.3% during the same period and flats by 1.8%. Aspredicted by the market analysts, the bottom end of the market is feeling the crunchharder than the top. That’s not really news but it is information.Where good wool carpetis concerned, the consumer profile is probably mid to upper end in both age and pocket. So whilst trade is extremely tough, we should be aware that there are pockets ofprosperity and opportunity out there.

Marketing tools such as the new aboutwool.com website, the About Wool brochureswhich are available to retailers and the design inspiration service offered by Brintons, as well as excellent sample services and comprehensivewebsites from other British manufacturers can all be a major help to carpet consumers, so please take full advantage of them in your showroom.

Small pockets of opportunity

British Wool has launched a brand new website designed specifically for the consumer. The website –aboutwool.com has taken a strong lead from the highly successful About Wool brochure which has enjoyed alot of praise from the carpet industry.

Offering simple, easy to understand and easy to find information about wool in a user friendly format, thewebsite has a smart and design-led appearance. An appealing screen style keeps key facts and informationstreamlined and uses current photography to maintain a contemporary image for British Wool carpet andother products.

The website includes a new ‘British Wool Look Book’ with mood board style room interpretations and aimsto offer information and inspiration to wool consumers. Also included is an up-to-date list of British Woollicensed manufacturers with links to their corporate websites for easy access.

“We wanted to meet the needs of wool consumers, many of which are increasingly using the web to search for information and product sources. The website is smart and straight forward to ensure that the consumer can get to the information they want quickly without losing interest and itoffers direct connections to our licensed manufacturers to make everything very easy,” explained Irfan Khan, Promotions Manager at the BWMB.

Tough and adorable Glandore

Cavalier John at ‘end of era’

Novostrat says that the uncertain economic situation in UK and Ireland is greatlyfavouring their sales of ‘Graphite’ economy carpet underlay.

‘Graphite’ is a robust, ‘no frills’, solid value for money carpet underlay. It is produced inpolyethylene foam which is 7mm thick and as such provides a particularly comfortablecushion underfoot. Graphite has a very low tog rating and is able to work perfectlywith underfloor heating systems, and being so light in weight it is ideal for ease ofstorage, transportation and, of course, installation.

Michael Hanrahan, Sales and Marketing Director for Novostrat, says “It is quitenoticeable at the moment how the market is gravitating towards the ‘value’ products -not necessarily the cheapest, but those which offer optimum performance at the mostrealistic prices. Fortunately our Graphite carpet underlay was always intended tooccupy that market position but we could never have expected it to have been so indemand so soon.

“We now have Graphite positioned for sale through retailers and distributorsthroughout the UK and Ireland”, he said.

retailers respond to industry issues

“Dodgy discounters aredamaging our industry”What retailers really think about selling quality carpet in a recession.

In The Stocklists Flooring Forum survey, most retailers denied sellingon price with 46% saying that a third or more of their sales were notsold on price and a further 21% saying maybe half their sales wereprice-led.

But a Northern retailer commented: “We are our own worst enemies -we often under-estimate what our customers are prepared to spend, andall too often if we are told that a competitor will do a deal for £X, are tooquick to say we will do it for less.We should sell the quality of our serviceand products instead of focussing on the £ signs!”

The pressure’s on to sell on price - and industry commentators have been criticalof independent retailers for being too quick to compromise margins to get a sale atany cost. We asked our readers at the sharp end of High Street selling to respondto the charge.

It was that discounting policy of retail part trading ‘sheds’ that came infor most venom in the survey. 84% blame these discounters fordevaluing carpet. “Prices being inflated by national companies to showhigh discounts does nothing but damage the integrity of the whole carpetretail industry,” said one respondent and another asked for action:“People believe far too much in 75% discounts. It should not be allowedand should be price checked by trading standards. The sooner we stopthis, the sooner the carpet trade will benefit.”

But a Southern retailer noted that discounts did help pull people in:“but it is then down to the sales staff to make the sale. Most customershave little idea how a carpet will perform but good sales training canensure we only sell products which suit and meet the customer'sexpectations.”

Training emerged as a big issue in the debate with 46% of retailersrating it a primary issue in generating higher value sales – moreimportant than enhanced point-of-sale presentation, for example.

Perhaps surprisingly, better product information from manufacturersrated top in the list of retailers requirements to help them up-sellcarpets – ahead even of better product ranges and point-of-sale. OneMidlands retailer had a swipe at manufacturers representatives.“The majority of reps don't know enough about the products they areselling, many of them are more interested in talking about golf handicapsand their holidays,” he said.

But retailers are generally positive about price. While most agreed therecession had made consumers more price sensitive, a strong 80%believe that consumers were capable of being traded up and only 11%said the economic climate meant that selling higher volumes ofcheaper carpet was more important.

But margin is a more complex issue as one Northern retailercommented: “I think it’s difficult to up-sell when the pressure is on just toget the order - being mindful also that most times there is more profit ina wholesale value wool twist than in a higher-end wool twist.”

There was a sense in the survey responses that the retail industry hasbeen ‘dumbing down’. A carpet professional in the South commented:“It is far too easy to become a ‘retailer’ today than it ever was. No capitalrequired. No premises required.Wholesalers are more than happy to takeany business without question”. A large Scottish retailer commented:

67% of retailers say most carpet is not soldsolely on price.

80% of retailers believe most consumers canbe traded up.

70% said the recession had made consumersmore price sensitive.

57% agreed that the quality end of the marketis holding up well.

Only 29% said consumers were prepared topay a premium for quality.

Only 8% of retailers thought there was enoughconsumer knowledge.

84% of retailers blame the ‘sheds’ for devaluingcarpet.

The Stocklists polled 293 retailers throughout the UK in March2009. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part last month!

“More exclusivity is required. At present anyone and his dog canaccess too many ranges. The large distributors are ruining themarketplace and wasting miles of carpet on duplicated patternbooks.”

If there is dumbing down in the trade, the question is raisedabout how smart consumers are about carpet. 69% ofretailers agreed that consumers did not know enough to buyon quality and a disgruntled Northerner commented: “I thinkmore of the money raised by the Carpet Foundation could beused to educate the customer rather than than telling the tradewhat they are supposedly doing wrong.”

We also asked retailers what they felt were the key sellingpoints for promoting better quality carpet. Design and colourranked with durability and appearance retention as theheadliners but, perhaps more surprisingly, feel and texture waslow on the list and stain-resistance only ranked with 14% as akey sales motivator.

So the lessons learned from the first Flooring Forum?Consumers can be traded up but they don’t know enough torespond without well-trained guidance from retailers.

“Don't forget to ask questions, to find out what customers need, not just what you think they would like,” said one battle-hardened retailer. “In these uncertain times we must remainpositive. If you have what the consumer wants - they'll buy.Business on the whole is not that bad!,” said another.

“We are our own worstenemies - we often

under-estimate whatour customers are

prepared to spend.”

“Prices being inflated bynational companies to

show high discounts doesnothing but damage theintegrity of the whole

carpet retail industry.”

“The majority of repsdon't know enough

about the products theyare selling and aremore interesting intalking about golf.”

“It is far too easy tobecome a ‘retailer’

today. More exclusivityis required.”

“In these uncertaintimes we must remainpositive. If you havewhat the consumer

wants - they'll buy.”

“Consumers can betraded up but they don’tknow enough to respond

without well-trainedguidance from retailers.”

The StocklistsFlooringForumThe Flooring Forum is a new service fromThe Stocklists to help the industry talk toitself about key issues including marketing, service, products, quality and theenvironment.

Retailers respond to an online survey andare also encouraged to leave ‘soapbox’comments. The anonymity of responses ispreserved so that retailers can say whatthey really think.

Stairing at new business

Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has introduced a single-discmachine that removes even the smallest specks of dirt from wood that othermachines usually miss – FloorXcenter.

Designed to keep wooden floors clean and looking in good condition, FloorXcenteris an easy to use machine which both professionals and do-it-yourself users can use.Unlike the traditional large and heavy machines, FloorXcenter is small enough to belifted and carried around.

“We realise how frustrating it can be when you can’t thoroughly clean and maintainyour floor,” says Steve Grimwood, MD of Osmo UK. “So we have developedFloorXcenter to eliminate the testing process of cleaning. By using rotation, it canreach the smallest spaces in the wood structure, guaranteeing effective cleaningresults. This product is ideal for the cleaning and maintenance of large areas ofcommercial or residential flooring.”

FloorXcenter has several extra pads to fulfil different functions. When cleaning, thewhite pad or brush is used and works in combination with the cleaning agent andthe mechanical movement of the machine. Because wooden floors mustn’t get toowet, FloorXcenter has a soap dispenser which enables the user to control howmuch of the pre-loaded cleaner is used.

The Furnishing Trades' Benevolent Association (FTBA) is seeinggrowing evidence of financial hardship caused by the recession - anincreasing number of grant applications are coming from furnishingindustry workers struggling to make ends meet as a result of theeconomic downturn.

Said FTBA chief executive Charles Kerrigan: “It was inevitable that the FTBA would feel the aftershocks of the downturn and applications coming through are beginning to reflect just how tough it is out there.”

As a further measure of help for those struggling to cope, the FTBA’sboard of directors has also increased the level of help made to thosein receipt of weekly grant payments. From April 1 the payment for asingle person rises to £12 a week and for a couple, £20.

Said Charles: “It is likely that we will see more and more applicationsfrom people affected by the recession over the coming months. Itmakes it all the more imperative that those in a position to do so,support our fundraising initiatives so we can continue to offer help tothe growing number of people experiencing real financial hardship.”

Most people looking to employ the services of installation experts will expect them to be at the topof their field and if you are able to promote that you or your fitters are highly trained it will set youapart from your opposition.

FITA has made a conscious effort to remain competitive during these trying times and ran a WinterPromotion on the Solid Wood Sanding and Finishing Course. Due to the success of that promotionwe are now running a Spring Promotion on the Basic Carpet Fitting Course. The cost of the five daycourse has been reduced by 20%, a very significant saving indeed.

If you do find that things are a little quiet at the moment now is certainly the time to consider training. You may well have already found yourself in theposition of knowing you need some training but your diary is so full you just can’t fit the training in. Many people have already seen training as a positivestep forward as the take up of places on our training courses has increased by 115% on the same period last year.

FITA takes great pride in the facilities available at its training centre atLoughborough, with constant modification and refurbishment of the fittingbays, the most up to date tools being on hand for use and information onproducts and materials accessible in the library. Our latest improvement tothe centre is the installation of a new heating system. The old systemunfortunately broke down in January during the extreme cold snap and wewere most fortunate that the installation of the new one took place veryquickly and without causing disruption to our training schedule. It is, ofcourse, very important to ensure materials and adhesives are stored at thecorrect temperature as well as keeping delegates happy.

During the past few months there have been some changes at FITA, a newChief Training Consultant has been appointed as well as a new CouncilChairman and a new Council Member. Steve Ramsden has taken on the

role of Chief Training Consultant and is responsible for the overseeing of the training centre and the training consultants.Steve brings many years of experience in the industry to this role and we wish him every success. Alan Gayle of A GFlooring Ltd is the new Chairman of the FITA Council taking over from Keith Carey last November. Alan runs asuccessful contracting business in the North West and has been an active member of the CFA and FITA Councils formany years. Joining the FITA Council is Henryk Struzik of Courtis Contracts (Nottm) Ltd, Henryk joined the CFACouncil last May although he has been involved in the contract flooring world for over 20 years. Our thanks to KeithCarey for all his hard work over recent years as Council Chairman, we wish him well for the future.

FITA has also welcomed a new Premier Sponsor on board this year, Balterio Ltd, as well as two new Official Sponsors,John Butler Contracts Ltd and Polyflor Ltd. Long standing Premier Sponsors are F Ball and Co Ltd and Blaklader Ltd andthere are also many other companies who donate materials and tools for use on the training courses. Grateful thanks toall those companies for their support.

FITA offers short courses (from one to five days) designed to fit in with the busy schedule of flooring contractors anddomestic fitters. Successful completion of a FITA course provides delegates with an industry recognised accreditationwhich can add further credibility to a business as well as perhaps providing a new revenue stream.

This small insight into FITA might entice you to visit the website (www.fita.co.uk) and find out more about the many andvaried courses on offer.

The importance of well trained fitters cannot be underestimated and can only enhance your company’s profile and steeryou towards a brighter future.

With consumers and businesses alike becoming increasinglyenvironmentally aware, the flooring industry needs to be aware of thepotential benefits.

These include reducing costs of waste disposal and lowering energyconsumption, both of which can help companies to improve cash flow.Where carpet is concerned, the use of natural products lend themselveseasily to recycling. Carpet Recycling UK is the trade association formed in2008 aiming to divert carpet waste from landfill, sponsored primarily by 15carpet manufacturers and 14 other value chain businesses, including rawmaterial suppliers, retailers and recyclers. The carpet industry has a postconsumer recycling rate of less than 1%, well below the level of other products.

Flooring retailers and contractors will be aware of the impact of packagingregulations and the associated disposal costs, says CRUK. Segregation ofwaste products at source reduces cost and carpets are no exception, so theassociation is developing schemes with collection and recycling partnersaimed at maximising the value recovered from carpets. More members arerequired to improve the rate of recycling, which is showing growth in someareas of the UK. Fees start at £300 per year for small businesses.

Where carpet manufacturers are concerned, Brintons states that it isactively involved in working to reduce the level of textile waste going tolandfill. Focus is given to recycling waste generated during each stage ofproduction, delivery, and post sale. The company is also working on anumber of recycling initiatives in conjunction with Carpet Recycling UK andother companies in three main areas. These include the production ofother textile based products‚ such as underlay and insulation materials‚energy reclamation and agriculture. Brintons already collects discontinuedcarpet samples from retailers when new ranges are launched andencourages retailers to ensure these are not thrown away as they can beusefully reprocessed.

Brockway Carpets is one of Carpet Recycling UK's most recent members, underlining its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of itsactivities wherever possible. But looking into recycling is also a hard-nosedbusiness decision, according to production director Nick Walley: 'If wedon't develop alternatives to landfill, it's highly likely the carpet industry willeventually be taxed in the same way as other areas of the economy, likethe electrical and electronic equipment and packaging industries, fordisposal of our waste products.' To this end Brockway is investigating with

CRUK how to extract and re-usefibre from carpet edge trimmings, and looking into end uses for thefibre dust created during the shearingoperation. It appears its bestpotential may be as a fertiliser.

‘From the retailer's point of view, until an infrastructure is established whichwill return value to the used carpet, there is not much they can do yet torecycle it.This is CRUK's prime objective, and our reason for being amember. It is a mammoth undertaking and if CRUK succeeds they willhave earned the industry's gratitude,' Walley concluded.

The Mohawk Group is another member of Carpet Recycling UK and hasalso undertaken a number of green issues within its own productioncycles. Reasoning that recycled content should be used for carpetmanufacture, with focus also given on how it is recycled at the end of itslife, the company has established its closed loop recycling initiative.Thisensures materials are constantly recycled and do not enter landfill.TheMohawk Group has accordingly established its Encycle carpet tile backing,ReCover recycling programme and its GreenWorks recycling facility. ItsEncycle is claimed to be the first and only non-PVC carpet tile that can berecycled without separating the face fibre from the backing layers, usingless energy and saving resources. Using 35% pre-consumer recycled

content (by total product weight), it also contains a minimum of 2% bio-based renewable content and uses no plasticisers.

The ReCover programme handles the logistics of old carpet removal, hence making it more probable that it will enter the recycling scheme.Thecompany's GreenWorks facility is capable of processing nylon 6, nylon 6.6and polypropylene. It processes these fibres, the backing and latex andrecovers about 90% of materials into useable products. The facility ensuresthat as much recycled product as possible is recycled and reused in theproduction of new carpets.

Wools of New Zealand reports that it is engaged in an extensive ongoingproject to ensure the long-term sustainability of the wool carpet industry.Detailed research has been carried out globally to create a clear picture ofmarket factors relating to the growing, processing and marketing of wooltextiles. It has also completed a global survey of the value chain tounderstand where the market opportunities lie. Carpet recycling is clearlya key priority to the industry in order to be able to deliver trulysustainable solutions, says WONZ.Wool is a naturally renewable andbiodegradable product, but gets contaminated with polyamides and othersynthetic materials that hinder its purity and the industry must takeresponsibility and address this.

It has also elected to support Carpet Recycling UK to find end-of-lifesolutions for wool-rich products.Wools of New Zealand believes it is notonly the ethical thing to do, but also critical to continued market access forwool-based products. It is therefore providing research data and access togovernment agents for lobbying purposes.WONZ further states it isworking with the entire value chain to ensure every stage of the process isadding value to the consumer experience of sustainable lifestyles.

VoiceOF THE TRADE

“Claire Crooks - Solent WholesaleAge: 44 Job Title: Financial DirectorYears with present company: 27Years in flooring industry: 27Main non-work interests: Holidays around world - never the same place twice!

“How would you describe current markets conditionsnow, compared to a year ago? Conditions are very turblent and difficult at present. It refocusesthe mind and we are working really hard to get our share of themarket.

When do you expect an upturn in the economygenerally? We believe 2009 still to be a difficult year with hopefully a start ofimprovement by the end of this year.We need to change people’sminds and create a feeling of optimism again, as this crisis is also apsychological one.

What's the key market issue/challenge today?Challenges today are to get retailers to remember that generallyindependent wholesalers are keener on price than the biggergroups. Look at nett prices not what discounts you get.

What’s the single most important key to success inflooring? To have enthusiasm and real interest in what you are selling.

Which companies in the trade most impress you?Loyalty has a big part in companies that impress me, and when wewere struck with a flood in 1994 and lost all our stock somesuppliers pulled out all the stops to help us and they includedVictoria Carpets who lent us a cutting machine to get us up andrunning again.

What’s your favourite flooring product (yours orsomeone elses?)I am a huge lover of 80%/20% wool twists.Apart from lookingexcellent on the floor they are the basis of our success, we haveover 34 wool twists in our stock ranges.

If you could ask retailers to change one thing, whatwould it be?Not to be so blinkered. Some retailers get into a habit in orderingfrom the same wholesale.Take the blinkers off and see what goodvalue a distributor like ourselves is compared to the big groups.

What has changed most in the last 5-10 years? The opinions of the suppliers to the independents. Suppliers arenow realising it is best to spread their ranges throughout thesector not just sticking with the big groups. We can generally get abetter book to sales ratio.

In all your time in the trade, what has most surprisedyou? When we had our flood in 1994 and for two months worked withno stock, how loyal some of our customers were and changed theirworking pratices to fit in with us.

And most disappointed you?Moving into our new premises in 2007 being ready to be able to dovast amount of cuts a day with our new machine and going into therecession just when we are at our best.

What was your first job in flooring?Thrown in right in the deep end - Sales Representative - at thetime one of the first women on the road.

Would you advise a member of your family to comeinto the flooring industry?Yes - in fact Stefani McHale who is my niece has been with us nowfor a year and she has settled in well.

Are wholesalers more or less important to the tradethan they were five years ago? We are more important than ever at the moment with retailersworking with such an empty order book. If a customer rings up andthey are available to fit, they want the carpet immediately and that’swhere we come in.We keep more stock in when times are quietfor that reason alone.

What’s the future of wholesaling distribution? It’s always good to have a choice and there will always be room forthe independent wholesaler. We are all unique and have somethingdifferent to offer but obviously some are better than others.Westrive to do our best in everything and I personally think we havethe best staff in the warehouse, sales office staff that go out of theirway to assist customers, friendliest/helpful drivers andknowledgeable reps in our sector.

Are manufacturers paying enough attention to servicingwholesalers? They are now, with the climate as it is, and now some of the biggergroups are going into manufacturing, the suppliers are realising wecan do a good job for them even though we might not be as big.The volumes we acheive on some of the products from Balta arehuge especially Gala which is a product that has just beenrelaunched in 4m/5m felt/SB, 4m gel.

We keep extra stock in when it’s quiet. Withretailers working off an empty order book, theywant a carpet immediately if a customer rings up.

Balterio’s successful ChromeZone technology, which was first introduced onthe Magnitude collection, is also being used on the new Grandeur collection.A subtle lustre in the wood’s pores is combined with a matt finish for a verynatural look and feel. The combination of a long and wide plank with matt-chrome ChromeZone finish on a 9mm thickness emphasises the perceptionof real wooden planks. The effect of long and wide planks is furtherreinforced by the 4-side V-groove. All these features make Grandeurextremely suitable for voluminous spaces like large areas and spacious lofts.

In this collection Balterio introduces a “fall-down” installation system for easyinstallation. Grandeur is available in five contemporary decors: RenaissanceOak, Old French Oak,Wellington Oak,Victorian Oak and Hermitage Oak.

Grandeur’s core is a high-quality, 9mm hydrosafe-HDF plank that offers verygood stability and has a standard guarantee ranging from 12 to 25 years, depending on the use.
