Principal‘s Perspective
Thanks to our students, staff, and parents for all you did to ensure
an excellent beginning of this school year. Back-to-School Night reinforced
for me the importance and the power of everyone working together for the
sake of our students. Your support continues to drive us toward becoming the
best school we can be.
We are in the development phases of our School Improvement Plan
and you are invited to work with us throughout the year as part of that process.
We will have School Improvement Teams to work on academic achievement,
school climate, communications and technology. We also have an Equity
Team that meets monthly. Our focus continues to be on academic
achievement for every student in this building as well as ongoing efforts to
nurture and sustain a school culture that makes support, pride, honor and
mutual respect natural to everything we do. In October a group of juniors and
seniors will conduct an anti-bullying assembly for ninth graders similar to one
they conducted last year. On October 6 we also will host our Hispanic
Heritage Month Celebration at 6 pm in the cafeteria. As a school we will
continue efforts with the LCPS initiative on equitable practices to promote
success for all students. Please contact assistant principal, Matt Wilburn, at
[email protected] or 571-252-2200 if you would be willing to work
with us on any of these areas of academic achievement, school climate, equity,
communications or technology. On October 13 the PSAT exam will be administered to
all ninth,
tenth, and eleventh graders. The PSAT is good practice for the actual SAT and
is the test used to determine National Merit Scholarship candidates. A
continued goal for us has been improved SAT scores and based on last year’s
improvement of more than 20 points we are on the right track. Also, on
October 14th seniors will attend a class meeting and workshops. The morning
will include the senior panorama picture, graduation information,
measurements for caps and gowns, and workshops to help seniors think about
their roles and responsibilities as quality citizens and leaders.
We continue to ask for your support as we work with students on
acceptable and appropriate dress and grooming habits. We remind young men
and women that clothing should not be provocative or too revealing as it can
create distraction or can endanger safety and is not acceptable for school.
Homecoming week will be on October 18-23. It will be a week of
exciting spirit days and activities. The pre-game parade on October 16th will
start at 5 pm at Belmont Station Elementary School and proceed down
Portsmouth Blvd to Claiborne Road and into our parking lot. The game
against Langley starts at 7:30 pm. The dance will be on Saturday night from
8-11:45 pm and students must be in good standing and must sign the pledge
cards regarding expectations to purchase tickets.
On the November 2nd workday (the second workday that also is
Election Day with an important school bond referendum on the ballot) we will
have parent-teacher meetings from 7:30-9:30 am. You can sign up for up to
ten minute sessions with individual teachers by calling the Guidance
Department at 571-252-2214.
Thanks again for all you do to make our school very special and for
making it fun for me to come to work every day.

Math Department News
Homework club is underway! Students who
attend can receive assistance in their current subjects,
they can work on gaps from past classes, or they can
prepare for tests such as the SOL or SAT. A
mathematics teacher or advanced studies student will
always be available. The club meets Monday and
Wednesday mornings in L401 between 8:20 and 8:50,
and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in L408 from
4:00 – 4:50. The schedule is posted on the math
website.
The first Virginia Math League contest is
scheduled for October 19, 2010. The thirty-minute
competition is held in the cafeteria before school
beginning at 7:55. Students need only a pencil and a
calculator to participate, and all students are
encouraged to attend. Additional contest dates are
November 16, December 14, January 11, February 22,
and March 22. Further information will available on
the website.
Juniors are invited to bring their PSAT
practice books to L408 on Tuesday and Thursday
mornings at 8:15. We will work on preparations for
the October 13 PSAT test. Any student scheduled for
the October 9 SAT is also welcome to attend.
Be sure your student’s calculator has been
permanently marked with some type of ID. It’s a good
idea to record the serial number as well. If you have
recently purchased a calculator and still have the proof
of purchase, please send it to school with your student.
We collect the Proofs of Purchase in the math
department and use them to purchase additional
equipment from Texas Instruments.
If your student is enrolled in any Algebra I or
Algebra II class or Geometry, they can access the
textbook at home by visiting classzone.com. Links are
also provided on the math web page. You student
should have been given an activation number by
his/her teacher for the initial log-in. The number can
also be obtained by emailing or calling the math
department.
If you have any questions concerning
mathematics at Stone Bridge, please contact Rita
Driskill at [email protected] or 571-252-2200.
Library News
The school year is off to a great start in the
library! All students visited for book checkout during
September in support of the school-wide Sustained
Silent Reading program in English classrooms.
Additionally, all 9th
graders received a library
orientation during the first two weeks of school in
preparation for research projects they will complete
during freshman year.
To assist our students with research needs and
locating information resources, we have extended our
library services beyond the library walls. This year we
are connecting with our students via Twitter,
Facebook, and our Bulldog Librarian Blog. Links to
these sites can be found on our library’s website from
the Stone Bridge home page. Be sure to follow our
tweets, find us on Facebook, and read our blog to stay
on top of the latest news and happenings in the library.

Clinic News
Vision and Hearing Screening will take
place on Monday, October 18th, and Tuesday,
October 19, for all 10th grade students and those
students, regardless of grade, who are new to Loudoun
County Public Schools. The screening will be done
during their respective PE Blocks. Please remind your
students to come prepared on those days by wearing
their glasses or contact lenses if they are prescribed.
Parents…please be reminded that Tylenol is
the only medication the clinic is permitted to dispense
to students if authorized on their annual emergency
form. We do not have cold and allergy medications
on hand, including cough drops and/or throat lozenges,
eye drops, or medicine for stomach upset and
heartburn. While our guidelines state that a student
should be free of fever for at least 24 hours prior to
returning to school, we realize that symptoms can
linger long after the fever has resolved. If your child
suffers from allergies or cold symptoms, please give
them a preparation to treat their symptoms at home in
the morning so they can participate in their classes
more comfortably throughout the day.
You are welcome to bring in any medications
you feel your child(ren) need on a daily or an
occasional basis. These medicines need to be
transported to the school clinic by a parent or guardian,
in their original container or prescription bottle, and
signed for on the LCPS medication authorization form.
Students may not carry medications while on the
school premises except preauthorized emergency
medicines such as inhalers or EpiPens.
Please continue to encourage frequent hand
washing, and coughing and sneezing into their sleeve.
As we approach the cold and flu season, this is the best
defense against the spread of infectious diseases.

Procedures for Obtaining Homework Due to
Unexpected Absences: Parents/guardians or students
should call the Guidance Office, (571) 252-2214, by
noon on the second day of the absence to request
homework when the absence is expected to last more
than three school days. This will help ensure that
work will be available by the end of the third school
day. If a student is to return on the third day, they
should pick up the missed work directly from their
teachers upon returning to class.
Student Withdrawal Procedures: The parent or
guardian of the withdrawing student MUST notify the
guidance office of the student’s impending departure
and obtain a ―Withdrawal/Transfer Form‖ from the
guidance secretary at least three days in advance of the
planned departure. The parent/guardian is required to
complete and sign the form and return it to the
guidance office. The signed form will be given to the
student during his or her last two days of school. The
student will walk the form through the building
obtaining teacher signatures, withdrawal grades and
returning text books and library books. All books
must be returned to avoid a deficiency. Lockers
MUST be cleaned out and PE locks returned to the PE
teacher. Before leaving on the last day, the student
will bring the completed form to the guidance office
for processing. If you have any questions, please do
not hesitate to call Guidance at 571-252-2214.
ETHICS AND LEADERSHIP DAY 2011: The
purpose of this event is to provide all seniors with
thought provoking topics for which they must decide
the outcome while considering the impact those
decisions have on society. In order to continue this
program, we need to raise the majority of the funds. If
you or your company would like to help, please
contact Theresa Kurzeja at [email protected].
SCHOLARSHIPS: Students, especially seniors, need
to sign up with www.fastweb.com to start looking for
scholarships. The Career Center also maintains a list of
scholarships that are available. Students should check
these weekly. The Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) is the government’s form to
determine if a student qualifies for certain grants,
federally funded work-study or low interest loans.
ALL families should complete this form. Many merit
scholarships require this form as well as many
Loudoun based scholarships. The government
encourages filing this form on the web. It is faster and
more accurate. This form cannot be completed until
January 1, 2011. The information required is based
on this tax year. To be proactive however, students
and their parent/guardian can request PIN numbers
from the government now. Log onto www.pin.ed.gov
to request your PINs.
The Stone Bridge Times 8
AP Exam Schedule 2011
The AP Exam Schedule is listed below. In
order to receive the 1.0 weighting students must take
the exam. The fee for each exam is $80.00 and

September 30, 2010. This agreement will be mailed
home to the parent of each student enrolled in an AP
class. If a family needs to arrange for a payment plan

When conditions require school closing or
early dismissal of students, announcements will be
give to the following radio and TV stations and the
LCPS Web site, www.loudoun.k12.va.us:
RADIO WINC 92.5 FM
WTOP 103.5FM/103.9FM WMAL 630 AM
WTOP 1500 AM
TV WRC TV 4 WTTG TV 5
WJLA TV 7 WUSA TV 9
News Channel 8
For early dismissals, parents will be informed
using the ConnectEd phone and email system and the
Loudoun Alert email system if you have signed up for it. LCPS will be using an alert system offered by
Loudoun County. Parents can register to receive
automatic email updates through the LCPS website at
www.lcps.org for up-to-the-minute school status
regarding closings, delays, early dismissals, and
special circumstances.
Delayed Opening:
In the event of a delayed opening, please stay
tuned to the radio/TV station in case some change in
the weather causes schools to be closed for the day.
A one-hour delay would mean all morning
programs would operate as usual with the exception of
starting 1 hour later.
A two-hour delay would mean that school
openings would be delayed for two (2) hours with
specific alternatives to certain programs.
Early Closing:
In the event that circumstances necessitate the
early closing of school after school is in session,
announcements will be broadcast over the same
radio/TV stations listed previously. If school closes
early, it will probably be announced that school will
close either one or two hours earlier than usual.
All bus routes operate as usual except for
starting one (1) hour earlier than the normal
time.
All after-school activities requiring school bus
transportation are canceled.
Other school activities not requiring
transportation service are at the discretion of
the principal.

Project Graduation
Needs YOU! Hello, I‟m Tory Schulte, Chair for Stone Bridge High School‟s Project Graduation. Project Graduation is an all night extravaganza for our graduates held the night of graduation at SBHS. Graduation is statistically a “high risk” night for our teens‟ safety in many ways. Our goal is to provide students with a drug-free, alcohol-free, tobacco-free environment, which affords a fun, safe and memorable conclusion to their years in high school. Project Graduation is a national organization, started in the late 1950‟s and we are one of 40+ high schools in the Northern Virginia area that host an all-night graduation party. There is substantial cost (in the neighborhood of $35,000.00) associated with this safe, yet fabulous party. SBHS-PG does fundraising activities (i.e. the sale of White House Christmas ornaments, Comedy Hypnosis Show, etc.) to help offset these costs & provide a „first class‟ event! We also solicit donations of money, food and prizes from community businesses and individuals. The Project Graduation Celebration yields not only a safe alternative for the graduates on graduation night, but an opportunity for the parents and community to work together to create an awesome experience for these students as well as the volunteers (yes! it’s fun for us, too!). Every year we try to add new volunteers (especially parents of underclassmen) to help carry on this important tradition. This year, Project Graduation will take place on Thursday, June 16th, from 11:30pm to 5:00am. We are fortunate to have a terrific board of officers already in place. Volunteers like you are needed to help these chairs either prior to June 16th or on the day of the all night party. If you would like more information on how you can help, contact Tory Schulte @ [email protected] or call at 703-726-8169. We hope that you will return the stapled volunteer form to the school office with your student. Thanks!
